Welcome

Welcome to the January Edition… Once again we welcome in a new year, which no doubt will race by for most of us much as 2013 did, with this in mind now is a good time to think about what you want to achieve this year and more importantly how you plan to do it. For myself I have been given free entry into a triathlon this year, as this aligns well with my goal of improving my fitness I will be working toward this later this year, look out for more on this in future editions. If your goal is fitness or weight loss there are plenty of people who can help you in this edition of The Deans Magazine.

We have lots of interesting articles in this month’s edition; success at Saltdean Tennis Club, and Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as news from Saltdean Pre-School, and lots more besides, plenty to look at when the weather is not conducive to going outside.

Artist of the Spring Month Music Festival Rottingdean

Miranda Harwood I studied Photography at BHASVIC and at The Phoenix Gallery in Brighton… I admired photographers such as Herb Ritts who was frequently in Vogue in my youth. He often took pictures of the sea, sand and water. I also took some unusual photographs of the sea, and used them for my first two group exhibitions in central Brighton A couple of years later, July 2009, I had my first solo exhibition at The Grange. The theme was ‘ local landscapes and hearts’. This proved to be successful and I went on to have my second independent exhibition the following February where I did a Valentines theme using, food and flowers. I then started to concentrate on Portraits for the next few years and have taken some commissions. My favourite portrait photographer was Mario Testino as they looked contemporary, natural and real. When I take portraits I try to achieve a natural picture that looks relaxed and happy.

I am currently taking commissions and selling greeting cards of food and postcards of The Windmill, at The Open Art Café in Nevill Road, Rottingdean You can email me at mirandaharwood@btinternet.com or ring me on: 07543 972 860.

On February this year I had another Valentine’s exhibition at The Grange, called Celebration of Love and this time I chose the theme of two things I love cooking and food. You can be creative with both and I enjoy entertaining and having parties. I had such a positive response that it went on to be part of the Artist-Open House at The Grange again in May this year where I took pictures of The Grange and the Windmill. I chose The Grange as it had recently been refurbished to its former glory inside and out. I wanted people to see the beauty of this building with fresh eyes. I am now exhibiting a new collection of Valentine Photos at the Open Art Café, Nevill Road, Rottingdean.

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 52

Protecting your children Christmas is safely behind us and a New Year well and truly underway. The decorations have been packed away for another year and you're finally beginning to understand how that new gadget of yours works. If this was the year that you conceded and allowed your child to have their own phone, laptop or tablet, are you now a little concerned about keeping them safe online? Cyber bullying is alive and kicking, and unlike faceto-face bullying, the online bullies can follow your children right back into the sanctuary of their own bedroom. So how do we help to protect our children if they have access to the Internet? Long gone are the days of the family PC in a communal room, we can now get online pretty much wherever and whenever. The most important thing that you can do for your children is to educate them; teach them not to share sensitive photos of themselves; make them aware of privacy settings and controls; help them see that what they say online can be used against them. Keeping the communication channels open allows you to monitor their behaviour and for

them to be open with you should any problems arise. In addition there are practical applications that you can employ. Routers can be set up to allow different levels of Internet access for different devices and can include time limits. And there are software packages that help keep our youngsters safe online - we have been trialling an antivirus that offers Facebook protection for parents - you have access to unobtrusive parental controls allowing you to monitor any threats to your children, flagging up potentially harmful things such as links, photos, messages or tags. Computer security is one of our top priorities, so if you would like more information or assistance with any safety issues then please do get in touch.

Tennis Recognition for Saltdean Rita Mullins

2013 was a very successful year for Saltdean Tennis Club. For the first time in 52 years our first team won the Brighton & Hove Parks league last season against a number of much bigger clubs in Brighton. Then in November we won the Park of the year award at the Hove took over the park, the Lido etc and built the current Tennis Sussex Awards (LTA) 2013 up at the Amex stadium. But facilities. the most impressive was our Chair Rita Mullins, who won the We are actively looking for new members in 2014 to join our prestigious Robert Cushing Award. The Saltdean Estate Company owned the area and we believe that back in the 1920s there were 6 courts at the front of the Oval Park, where the Lido is now situated. In 1959 a group of local residents came together with a common interest and wanted to resurrect the derelict courts on the site of the current bowling green. They formed a tennis club and The Saltdean Estate Company agreed to resurface and rewire the courts. There was no club house then so the club played mixed doubles at weekends and provided teas for competitors Saltdean Tennis Club members in a tent! When development started in the 1960s Brighton &

Pain Solutions Feature

Coping with Bunions! What are bunions? A bunion or HAV’s as referred to by health care professionals (Hallux Adbucto-Valgus) is a bony deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe. These are the most common forefoot deformities. The bone behind the big toe becomes displaced. This causes the big toe to drift inwards towards the smaller toes. This shifting of the bones results in a bony prominence forming of the side of the foot which becomes the bunion joint. Eventually the big toe may rest under or sometimes over the 2ⁿ toe. This condition can lead to a variety of different soft tissue and bony complaints which can get quite painful! What causes bunions? ● Mostly by poor fitting footwear. This is observed more commonly in women due to wearing tighter fitting shoes. ● Genetics- family history can lead to this. ● Abnormal foot function- more specifically people who excessively pronates (rolling inwards of the foot when walking) leads to medial pressure being exerted which causes the deformity. ● Conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis. ● Trauma or injury to the feet. Common signs and symptoms: Redness, swelling and pain is often felt on the inside margin of the foot. Patients may also find that their feet become too wide for their regular sized shoes. They will also develop symptoms such as corns, hard skin (Callus) and ingrowing toenails.

Treatments for Bunions: The main goal of the following is not to improve the appearance of your foot, but to prevent it from getting worse as bunions consist of 4 progressive stages. ● Podiatrists can provide Anti-pronatory insoles , these are used as functional devices to stabilise the foot and prevent further pronation from making the bunion worse. ● Wear wide fitting shoes. The ideal features would be a wide toe box with good depth and less stitching at the front to give more room to accommodate the bunion. NO HIGH HEELS! ● If the bunion is red, hot and swollen; use ice on the joint and elevate the foot on a stool. ● Products such as bunion pads, bunion splints and bunion shields can help to prevent it from getting worse and manage the pain. ● Daily stretches on your feet and toes, this helps to increase circulation, red blood cell activity and bone realignment which can help a great deal. As a Podiatrist/Chiropodist I would be more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Tristan Valeny Chiropodist at Pain solutions 01273 302072

Local History - Part 22

Mike Laslett

Trains & Boats and Planes: This month - Planes!

Hotel Peacehaven, where the carvery now stands on the South Coast Road, opened in October 1922. The developer, Charles Neville, constantly used publicity stunts in order to promote Peacehaven. The Grand Opening of the Hotel was no exception. The Daily Mail had organised a gliding event at Itford Hill near Lewes later that month. He pipped the Mail to the post by sponsoring the first public exhibition of gliding in England a few days earlier. They subsequently stopped him advertising in the paper ever again. There was even a special Pullman train from London for the occasion. In the morning, Anthony Fokker, a famous Dutch airman whose name lived on through Fokker aircraft, showed films of gliding on the continent. After lunch, a fleet of Southdown buses ferried guests to the Downs above Saltdean where the gliding was to be demonstrated where the slope of the land was unobstructed in all directions. Due to lack of wind a motor car was needed to tow the glider at 20mph before it could take off for its 500 yard flight. Neville had intended Fokker to land in front of Peacehaven Hotel but winds took the glider towards Saltdean.

Pullman Train

Towards the end of The First World War aeroplanes and seaplanes were based both locally in the region of the Meridian Centre and at Bishopstone Tidemills, where you may still see the runners of the hangar doors in the concrete today. While Magnus Volk’s son Gordon produced most of the publicity for Peacehaven another son, Hermann, built seaplanes at a works in Gloucester Road, Brighton and flew them from a base on Madeira Drive to the west of Duke’s mound.

Emotional Freedom Technique Local therapist Amanda Monti explains what Emotional Freedom Technique is and how it can help you. Emotional Freedom Technique is a simple and fast way to free yourself from the negative emotions that are holding you back from achieving a goal, letting go of pain or regret, an addiction you cant beat and any other limiting beliefs that cause a block in the natural flow of energy that should run smoothly round our bodies enabling us to go forwards and not become a prisoner to our feelings.

practitioner is difficult for the client.

When we are content our energy flows freely through our energy meridian lines. When a negative feeling about ourselves or our lives arises we get a "short" in our system and this can cause problems which can seriously impede our progress in us becoming grounded humans. By gently "tapping" with the finger tips on certain meridian points on the body, similar to some acupuncture points, we can tune into the problem and change the belief we are holding on to by freeing the blocked energy and restoring us to full "power". The technique works on both the conscious and subconscious mind, enabling a fast clearing of negativity from past beliefs to a positive belief for the future, Emotional Freedom. Once the process has been learned, it can be used anytime a belief comes up in the mind that has no business being there! Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Obesity The latest obesity statistics in UK are alarming. According to the BBC 60% of adults and 30% of children in UK are overweight and 30,000 people die annually from obesity-related illnesses. Britain has 1.5 million adults classed as morbidly obese and weight loss operations and obesity-related hospital admissions have soared in recent years. Obesity/ Overweight Health Implications • Coronary Heart Disease • Type 2 Diabetes • Cancer: Breast, colon, endometrial • Hypertension • Osteoarthritis • High Cholesterol • Stroke • Liver and Gall Bladder Disease • Sleep Apnoea and Respiratory Problems • Gynaecological Issues / Infertility • Mental Health and Self-Esteem Extensive research revealed that obesity, a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancer and other chronic diseases, is a pro-inflammatory disease. Inflammation and Oxidative Stress - a Silent Cause of Disease We don't suddenly get heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis or cancer. By the time it is diagnosed it may have been developing for many years. We can have a "silent" inflammatory state in our bodies that we are unaware of because initially it gives us no symptoms, though left unchecked can lead to a whole host of inflammatory diseases, which are becoming more prevalent. Obesity can be inflammatory related. Anti-Inflammatory Help from Nutrition (in previous articles) • Aloe Vera • Black Pepper • Cayenne Pepper • Cinnamon • Co-Enzyme Q10

leads to reduced calorie intake when individuals are given free access to food. • Chilli: may increase energy expenditure and fat metabolism, reducing obesity and related disorders. • Cinnamon: Anti-obesity due to its body fat lowering • Coconut oil: Can decrease fatty tissue gene expression. Larger increases in muscle and smaller increases in fat tissue. Dietary CO does not cause dyslipidemia and seems to promote a reduction in abdominal obesity. Greater energy expenditure with medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) rather than long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) results in less body weight gain and decreases size of fat deposits as well as having a greater satiating effect than LCFAs. • Flax Seeds: Reduce the glycemic index of food items when added to recipes. • Green Tea: Effective in weight loss and weight maintenance. • Vitamin D: Increased circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) directly associated with weight loss in post menopausal women. An excellent first resolution would be to join Neighbourhood Watch! By joining you will receive regular information and will be able to help make your community a safer and more secure place to live. Contact the secretary, Linda Hood by email or telephone for more information nhw.srosec@hotmail.com /01273 306441. You can also look at our website www.sro-nhw.moonfruit.com Second Resolution: To always lock house doors, cars and garage doors. There are always opportunist thieves around!!! Driving Licence Have you remembered to notify the DVLA of your new address if you have recently moved? A very easy thing to forget.

From time to time, everyone needs to renew their Driving Licence because it has expired or the photograph needs updating! You are legally required to update your photograph every 10 years. This is to ensure that the driver can be correctly identified and help to prevent it from being used fraudulently. The DVLA do send you a reminder letter but it is your responsibility to make sure you act as quickly as possible. If you don't you could receive a hefty fine. While you can renew your licence on line many people still prefer to do this by post. Remember, never send cash - always send a cheque or postal order made out to DVLA Swansea. Make sure you write the licence number, date of birth and name and address on the back.

Brighton Philharmonic

Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra Do you know the Best-kept Secret in Brighton? It appears it is Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, formed in 1925 and playing at the Brighton Dome on selected Sunday afternoons from October to March.

The programme for the season can be viewed at www.brightonphil.org.uk and tickets for the concerts can be purchased from The Dome Box Office on 01273 709709 or www.brightondome.org.

There was uncertainty during the summer when the So go ahead, spread the word about the Brighton PhilOrchestra, formed of freelance players from the local harmonic and help reveal Brighton’s best kept secret. area, and also from other orchestras in both London and throughout the UK, hit financial difficulties, mainly caused by a drop in ticket sales and legacy income. The Orchestra receives no public funding and relies entirely on sponsorship and donations. Following an Appeal led by chairman of the Board, Karen Platt, local music lovers donated a massive £72,700 to save the Brighton Philharmonic and allow the 2013/14 season to commence in October, and this renowned institution to continue to give pleasure to future generations of concert-goers. Barry Wordsworth, the Music Director, had this message , “This is an important achievement not only for the Philharmonic, but I believe will also be recognised as a matter of civic pride, as it preserves an important part of the character of this great city.” Karen Platt of Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra Although this latest season has been secured, the orchestra still requires increased levels of concert sponsorship, so if you can help, either as an individual or corporate sponsor, contact them on mail@brightonphil.org.uk In November, Karen Platt (our Chairman) was nominated for the Sussex Woman of the Year award for the Woman in Arts category to recognise her work with the orchestra, and at a glittering awards ceremony was announced as the winner, with other women qualifying for the many varied categories. Three Pillars of Fitness

No Payne No Gain! Andy Payne

"Losing 40% or 8.5 stones of my own body weight has inspired me to launch my own mobile Personal Training business with a difference" Where do I begin? I have spent most of my life battling obesity. Looking back it was a particular photograph of me on holiday with my parents that tipped the balance. I was twenty four years old, I had a waist measurement of 48 inches and a collar of 19 inches. I was shopping in "Big and Tall" shops for clothing and importing my jeans from America. I decided that enough was enough, and so embarked upon a drastic, life changing course of action. Within two years, through a lot of hard work and focus, I had lost eight and a half stone. I know from personal experience that there is no such thing as a "best exercise for weight loss" . I also know that the Three Pillar approach, is built around sound principles which are guaranteed to provide results .Today my obesity is but a distant memory.

Andy before his dramatic weight Loss

I have lost both my Father and Grandfather to Heart Disease, they are my inspiration. I am confident that my personal experience, combined with my professional knowledge as a YMCA Fit Graduate means that I can deliver everything from healthy living tips to advanced training techniques, all of which will play a vital part in improving your health and fitness. The Pillars themselves provide a simple structure, which will allow you to maintain control of your lifestyle. The Pillars can be applied to your health and fitness goals, whatever they may be. Obesity in the UK is now of epidemic proportions, and continues to gather momentum at an alarming rate: "It is expected that by 2050 60% of the adult male population and 50% of the adult female population will be clinically obese. This statistic is alarming and should provide some motivation, however it is far more important that we both understand your motivators." I will help you to find what motivates you and build that into your programme.-NOO.org (National Obesity Observatory) March 2012. Andy Payne - andy@threepillarsoffitness.co.uk 01273 258212
