As usual we have some fantastic articles for you this month, I recommend you look very closely at the pictures in our Artist of the Month feature on page 7 as that is the only way to tell that these incredibly life like images are in fact paintings and not photographs. Or if you are looking for help and inspiration for your New Year’s resolution please check out our 5 page section beginning page 57. It has a range of activities from music lessons to getting fit.

In early December the Deans Magazine took part in the Christmas Tree festival at St Margaret Church Rottingdean along with a lot of other local businesses and groups. The event was a major success and raised £5842 for the Martlets Hospice, very well done to the organisers. For anyone that missed it photos are available on the St Margaret website: www.stmargaret.org

Graham Fletcher Like many artists, I have tried several styles and a few creeds along the way. Influences come and go as one tries to be authentic. I believe there is a right course of action for each of us, one that is natural to individual disposition. It can take time to find it and requires will, but there are clues if one pays attention. I stopped painting for ten years because the attempt to mould my art into a vehicle for symbolic truths proved vain. It may have had some therapeutic value but it was largely pretentious. Beware the search for meaning! It wasn't until my son became a farrier that I was reinspired. I'd had some success at farrier pictures (see my web-site and the Cheapside Series) when I had a “moment at George Wade's Smithy. Apprentices competed there every March for a cash prize. I had gone along to support my son and get material for pictures. At close of working day, I stood waiting outside, facing the now purple Downs to the south. The lingering heat from the forges warmed my back and the smell of coke and iron bit my nose. And then, I knew. Doubt left me.
What can I say about my art? Not much. I have neither aesthetic theory nor confession of principles to make. I am self-taught and still learning. I paint groups of figures, portraits, horses and the occasional still-life. I love the tools of the trade: pigments, brushes, oils and resins, etc., and a stinky studio is another thing of wonder to me. My technique remains the same whether working from life or from other sources. I work from dark to light, building up in layers. Visit my web-site: www.grahamfletcherart.com
The strong figurative tradition in European art, from Giotto to Freud, and beyond, moves me most. I like flesh and bone, sinew and muscle and the body at rest and in motion is a thing of wonder. A farrier striking iron is up my street, you might say. And through my son's occupation, I've come to enjoy painting horses. Flesh and bone, etc.

Saltdean resident wins 3rd place in International cake competition
A nursery practitioner from Saltdean has been revealed as a Gold Award winner and overall 3-Place Winner in the “A Decorative Exhibit” Class in an international cake completion at the Cake International - The Sugarcraft, Cake Decorating & Baking Show held at the NEC, Birmingham from 7 November to 9 November 2014 Beata Khoo, of Saltdean, Brighton, scooped the coveted prize on Sunday, beating 27 other Gold Award winners from a total of 79 entries with her “Finding Nemo-Under The Sea” themed cake. "I am absolutely over the moon because this is such a difficult category to win a Gold award, let alone win a Top 3 prize. This is because this “A Decorative Exhibit” Class gives competitors the total freedom to push their imaginary boundaries and as anyone can see, all entries are of top quality," Mrs. Khoo said.
"I am very proud of my achievement, and I dedicate this award to my family and friends who had always supported and believed in me." Mrs. Khoo, who only started designing cakes as a hobby about 2 years ago but has baked most of her life, also has a part-time business called My Sweet Passion Cakes, which is well-known with some residents of East Sussex. She said she plans to spend more time improving the quality of her cake designs and building her clientele, simply adding: "I just want to make people happy with my cakes.” www.mysweetpassion.com

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis is a common household plant grown in many parts of the world. Used for flavouring food, a beverage drink, in cosmetics and as a preservative in the food industry due to anti-oxidant/ anti-microbial properties. Folk Medicine Used as an anti-spasmodic in renal colic and dysmenorrhoea, analgesic, anti-rheumatic, carminative, diuretic, expectorant, in relieving respiratory disorders, to stimulate hair growth and for anti-epileptic effects. Rosemary extract relaxes smooth muscles of trachea and intestine and stimulates bile production, liver protective and anti-tumour activity. Modern Science Shows The chemical constituents include polyphenol tannic acid and rosmarinic acid, similar to caffeic acid in coffee, flavonoids and volatile oils, phenolic terpenes notably carnosol and carnosic acid. Rosmarinic acid is well absorbed from gastrointestinal tract and skin and has potential in treatment or prevention of bronchial asthma, spasmogenic disorders, peptic ulcer, inflammatory diseases, liver-toxicity, atherosclerosis, ischaemic heart disease, cataract, cancer and poor sperm motility. It is used for problems involving central nervous, cardio vascular, genito-urinary, reproductive and respiratory systems and liver treatments. The oil is used in oils and lotions for the treatment of arthritis, gout, muscular pain, neuralgia, wounds and rubbed into hair to stimulate the bulbs for renewed activity, to prevent premature baldness. ● Anti-Bacterial: Against drug resistant strains of infections from respiratory tract, abdominal cavity, urinary tract, skin and hospital equipment; also oral streptococcal and enterococcal microorganisms. ● Anti-Inflammatory: Rosmarinic acid inhibited lung inflammation from diesel exhaust particles in vivo. Carnosic acid has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-adipogenic properties useful in insulin resistance, which is linked to low-grade chronic inflammatory response. Carnosol suppressed pain and inflammation from formalin injection in mice. Rosemary extract decreased pain in arthritis subjects and C-reactive protein, inflammatory marker, in patients with rheumatic disease. ● Anti-Oxidant: Free radicals are related to inflammation, aging, and carcinogenesis. Smelling rosemary decreases stress hormone cortisol and protects against oxidative stress. Rosemary oil is anti-oxidant and liver protective. Carnosic acid and carnosol inhibit lipid peroxidation, reduce membrane damage from oxidative stress and significantly lower DNA damage.
● Cancer: Carnosol is well tolerated as it has selective toxicity towards cancer cells. Rosemary extract and carnosic acid are used in a complementary approach in breast, colon, liver, pancreatic, prostate, renal cancer and neuroblastoma ; also anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Cigarette filter containing rosemary extract decreased the tumour forming aspect of cigarette smoke, and may lead to decreasing lung cancer risk in smokers. ● Cognitive: Antidepressant-like effect. Rosemary oil effective for dementia; improved long-term memory in rats. Produced objective effects on cognitive performance, as well as subjective effects on mood, especially in Alzheimer's Disease patients. ● Diabetes: Carnosol and carnosic acid lower blood levels of fatty acids and glucose, protecting liver tissues as well as having beneficial anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects; stimulates glucose uptake in skeletal muscle, lowering blood sugar. Rosemary oil is active in healing diabetic wounds; more study is needed. ● Skin: Rosemary extract given orally to mice was significantly protective against two-stage skin tumorigenesis. Carnosic acid prevented UV-enhanced oxidative DNA damage in human skin cells. ● Nervous System: Inhaling rosemary oil stimulates brain wave and autonomic nervous system activity. Carnosic acid and carnosol markedly enhanced synthesis of nerve growth factor (vital for the growth and functional maintenance of nerve tissue ) in human glioblastoma cells. Adding Rosemary to your Diet: Soups, stews, roasts. Smell oil and use in a burner. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Saltdean United Football Club
Saltdean United Football Club Saltdean United Football Club is a community football club that was formed in 1966, following the England team's World Cup success. The Club started their life in the local Brighton Saturday League and gradually moved up their division structure over the years. Saltdean United acquired Hill Park as their current home ground shortly before joining Division three of the Sussex County League in the 1984/85 season. Currently the men's first team play in Sussex County Division two. They aim to provide teams for all ages of the community, and coach players as young as six years old, and all the way up to the Senior Level. The volunteer run Club has recently suffered serious weather damage to its youth and mini-soccer pitches, including flooding in the access lane. This made it difficult for the club to practice or play weekend matches. Brighton & Hove Council however have been pro-active in helping the club return the pitches to working order. Sadly, Iain Fielding, the Club Secretary is preparing to stand down after 26 years of association with Saltdean United. This means the Club is now specifically looking to recruit and appoint a new Club Secretary and would like to hear from anyone with administrative experience and an interest in football.
Volunteers are always required at the club and there are also openings for other roles, including sites manager, volunteer coordinator and kit equipment coordinator. If you would like to find out about any more of these roles you can contact the Club Chairman, Bob Thomas at chairman@saltdeanunitedfc.co.uk or call 01273 584542. We're always looking for team supporters too, so if you would like to come and watch a match for free, bring this magazine or article to one of the men's first team games at Hill Park, Coombe Vale, Saltdean. For fixtures please visit the Sussex County League website: http://www.scfl.org.uk/pages/fixturesandresults.h tml and just click on Saltdean United from the 'drop down' menu on this link and choose the dates.

Neighbourhood Watch
Neighbourhood Watch update Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean Neighbourhood Watch would like to wish you a very safe, secure and happy 2015!! Thank you to all the residents who are Neighbourhood Watch members and who are making our community a safer and better place to live.
An important message from Brighton & Hove Inspector Paul Ransome Car crime....help us to help you Please, please, please lock your motor vehicles as the area is experiencing an increase in thefts from insecure motor vehicles which is likely to continue as we approach the New Year. Sussex Police continue to improve the figures with regard to reduction of crime in this area however there is still a long way to go and vehicle owners need to take responsibility for securing their cars, especially overnight. East Brighton has experienced 321 vehicle crimes since 1st April 2014, this is a significant reduction
from the same period last year (466). Criminals tend to target certain areas and then revisit them a few weeks later. Unfortunately your area seems to have been targeted recently. My team have carried out numerous operations, some in plain clothes in order to prevent and detect this crime and as a result we are currently 2% up on last year's solved crime rate, which doesn't sound much but is a step in the right direction. Please help us reduce the number of victims and identify those responsible.
If you care about your community why not join us and find out how to become a member. Contact Linda Hood, Secretary 01273 306441 or email nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.co.uk for more information.

Cinema Saltdean
Saltdean Cinema. Cinema Saltdean Forever! Grand Gala Opening Cinema Saltdean comes of age and goes fully independent! Now celebrating its fifth season, Cinema Saltdean has ambitious plans for the future. After a complete seat refurb. (the old ones weren’t very comfortable) we now can confirm that we have our own brand new projector, screen and sound equipment - a testament to the fact that the Cinema in Saltdean is here to stay. After months of preparation and testing – and more testing! - we are ready to roll with our new kit. The new independent Cinema Saltdean will offer a better choice of films, focused on what our audiences like and ask for. We start the year with what is destined to become a classic: 'The Hundred Year Old Man who Climbed Out of a Window and Disappeared' (15). Based on the best-selling novel by Jonas Jonasson, this screen adaptation is a laugh-out-loud comedy that will engage and enthral. Had the Coen brothers been born in Sweden, this is the film they would have made. Described by the critics as "explosively funny”, we will be screening it on Tuesday 27 January at 7:30pm; all tickets £5.50. If you fancy the glitz of a gala evening, come to see ‘What we did on our holiday’ (12A), a hilarious film from the writers of the TV series 'Outnumbered', starring David Tennant and Billy Connolly and the inevitable children. This will be on Saturday 14 February at 7.30pm. Get your tickets fast: there may well be some surprise guests to help us with our re-launch of the cinema; and there’ll be a glass of bubbly and some nibbles! The good news is that the fun continues: and in some months we plan to run two films; on a Tuesday and a Saturday, thus offering a greater choice. We take the opportunity to thank all of our regular supporters who have braved the elements to come and meet their friends, have a glass of wine and ‘talk film’ over the last four years. Our new cinema will enable audiences to come in to the Taverner Room prior to the film; so, no more waiting outside in the rain! So, to those of you who still don’t know there is a cinema in Saltdean, come down and see us: we are
at St Nicholas Hall Saltdean Vale. We look forward to seeing you. Tickets for all shows are obtainable at Saltdean Fruits; the POs in Longridge Avenue and Marine Drive, Rottingdean; or on the door. For more details, see our Facebook page; www.facebook.com/CinemaSaltdean or follow us on Twitter: @CinemaSaltdean

Local History - Part 32
Mike Laslett
The Amazing Macdonald Sisters
These jottings previously covered the Pre -Raphaelite artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones, who divided his time between Fulham and Rottingdean. His wife Georgiana (1840-1920) was only mentioned in passing. She was a prominent person in her own right, being one of the eminent Macdonald sisters. Though an artist and writer she devoted her life to being a mother and socialist. Like so many others from Brighton’s history she has a Brighton & Hove bus named after her. Her younger sister Agnes married the artist Sir Edward Poynter, who became Director of the National Gallery and President of the Royal Academy. Her sister Louisa married Alfred Baldwin MP. He was the father of Stanley Baldwin, three times Prime Minister between 1923 and 1937. Stanley married into the Risdale family, who lived at the Dene on the south side of the Green. (Above) Georgiana Burne-Jones
The Dene
(Right) Bus named after Georgiana
She lived at North End House, west of the Green, so called as their London home was The Grange, North End, Fulham and their seaside home was at the north end of the village. Georgie’s socialist activities were somewhat out of touch with the local villagers. She won a seat on Rottingdean parish council in 1895, backing the working class and taking up women's issues. On the declaration of peace following the Boer War in 1902, she controversially hung a banner at North End House reading "We have killed and also take possession". North End House
The Pre -Raphaelite artists were reknown for discovering beautiful young women who they would paint and often fall in love with. William Morris discovered and eventually married Janey Burden, who was also courted by Dante Gabriel Rossetti after the death his beloved Lizzie Siddal. Georgie and William Morris were always close both after the death of Burne –Jones and during his affair with the model Maria Zambaco . Burne-Jones not only used his wife as a model but also his son Philip (b1861.) In an 1862 window at St Michael and All Angels Brighton titled “The Flight into Egypt,” Georgie is shown as the Virgin Mary, fleeing from Herod’s slaughter of the firstborn, clutching the baby Jesus, who was modelled by their one year old son Philip.
Her elder sister Alice married John Kipling and was mother to Rudyard Kipling. Rudyard lived at the Elms on the North side of the Green between 1897 and 1902, until he left for Batemans at Burwash to escape the attention of tourists. The Elms Rottingdean

Boomerang Kids Boomerang Kids at Saltdean Barn has been open for 10 years and we are celebrating! As a registered charity (we are not a private company), we obtained lottery funding in 2005 to provide a new childcare centre in Saltdean for children aged 0-11yrs. We raised over £1 million to renovate the old derelict barn in the park and were delighted to be fully booked before we opened.
Helen Hicks- Manager, Boomerang Kids. All enquiries : 01273 390900
The setting has transformed over the last 10 years, at the front with a Bear Hunt garden and a back garden which includes growing areas for children to plant their own vegetables and a play in mud kitchen. We extended in 2010 to double the capacity and a baby room was added by popular demand. This currently has spaces and guarantees a pre-school place once the baby turns 2 years old. We employ 26 staff with many very long serving, giving us breadth and depth of experience in working with children. Some staff came to us as student placements and all have relevant qualifications to their roles. I obtained my Early Years Teaching degree aged 40 and we promote an ethos of personal development, education and high quality care. We provide a flexible approach to childcare, in partnership with parents, to provide outstanding childcare for their children. This has been highlighted by our outstanding OFSTED reports We also provide an after-school club for Saltdean School, which currently collects around 30 primary school children each day but we can accommodate more! Watch out for the walking bus if you are around the school at 3 o’clock! Working closely with the school works so well, as a large percentage of our children transfer to Saltdean Primary but we also feed into Rottingdean schools too. With 50 children transferring each year, our photo wall of ex-pupils is 500+ They may leave but they often return to our after-school or holiday club, hence the name “Boomerang Kids”; they keep coming back and long may it continue ! The barn is my life-time achievement and I was so proud when I was nominated as a community hero. Mary, my deputy, and I visited 10 Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown and his wife for drinks. A fantastic experience! It is truly an exceptional setting and I am so proud of what has been achieved by the staff and most importantly, giving the parents and families of Saltdean the support they need and their children the very best possible start.

1. What makes sásta unique? We are a non-intimidating fitness studio that is about achieving results in a healthy way. We provide 5 elements; our patented Fitness Pod, Body Sculpting, Low GL meal plan, One to One personal Trainer and Body Composition Analysis. 2. What is the pod about and how does it work? The sásta fitness pod is a treadmill-based fitness device. A user wears a special suit as they walk or run in the sásta fitness pod which creates negative pressure and burns fat at a faster rate. The short 30 minute workout is equivalent to 2 hours of regular exercise and is very appealing to busy people. Benefits also include improved skin tone, reduced cellulite and increased blood circulation. 3. Is this a diet, which will leave me feeling hungry all day? No, we are promoting healthy eating by educating on carbohydrate and the sugar content of food choices. Our meal plans are designed to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Benefits include: speeding up your metabolism, lowering Cholesterol and blood pressure and improving insulin levels. 4. But aren’t personal trainers expensive? Yes they can be, however our personal trainers are an additional service we provide at a very affordable cost to monitor clients on a one to one basis to guarantee the end result. 5. Why do you focus on body sculpting? This is designed to speed up your metabolism, tone and shape your body leaving you looking and feeling great. Race into 2015 It is around now when people make New Year resolutions and it is no different for the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions. To complement their successful sponsored swim held at Roedean School, the Lions are planning some healthy exercise with a sponsored walk /run in the beautiful Deans area this spring. Moreover, for those of you with an instinct for the main chance their Race Night will also pump the adrenalin as they sprint into 2015. Race Night Saturday 7 March 2015 Rottingdean Public Hall, Park Road, Rottingdean Doors open: 7.00; First Race: 7.30. Entry Tickets £5. Accompanied children free. There will be a licensed bar. The Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions are organising an evening of horse racing based on viewing a high definition film making you feel you are really in the grandstand or trackside. There will be eight races with betting on a tote basis at £1 per go. Money will be won by betting on the winning horse. Whether you attend or not you can own and name a horse in advance for £5. Please call 07767 665 895 if you would like to own and name a horse for the evening. A bottle of champagne will be awarded to the winning owner of each race. Businesses, individuals or groups can sponsor and name a race for £40 and this includes two entry tickets – please call 07767 665 895 for details. Please also call this number if you would like to buy entry tickets in advance. There is limited capacity and entry tickets cannot be bought on the night. Sponsored Walk and Run Sunday 17 May 2015 (provisional) Start: Undercliff at Saltdean The Lions are planning a sponsored walk and run which will be around nine miles in length and of medium difficulty with a few steep gradients. It is very much at the planning stage at the moment, but the proposed route starts at the undercliff at Saltdean and continues to Ovingdean and out onto the downs passing the iconic Rottingdean Windmill. Once on the downs it is planned to return back to the undercliff via Saltdean having taken in the Deans. The Lions are planning for it to be a spectacular route with some breathtaking scenery. For the above event it is proposed that entrants will pay an entrance fee which will be refunded if the total sponsorship generated exceeds this figure. Entrants can nominate their own charity; fifty percent of monies raised will go to the charity selected by the entrant while the balance will go to a nominated charity supported by the Lions. Please watch this space for further news. For further details on the above, please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. As this is the January edition of the Deans Magazine, Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club would like to wish all the readers of this magazine a prosperous New Year with, above all, good health. Also, the Lions would like to thank all the Deans Magazine readers that supported them during 2014.
