Welcome to the January Edition Another year, and we are still here! I have had a bit of a play around with the appearance of the magazine this month as it had not really changed since we launched The Deans Magazine in 2010, I hope it works but am open to comments.

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades 100th Edition.

Before & After Happy New Year! And Happy Centenary! This is Dolphin’s 100 published article in the Deans Magazine. Have things changed much since we began our Tips & Advice column? And where are things are headed in the future? Sadly we didn’t save our very early articles, so we can’t reference them directly, but most of us can recall how computing was a decade or so ago. Telephones: We were seeing the rise of the mobile phone, but it wasn’t the smart phones we take for granted now. In 2018 less people are talking through their phones with more communication happening via instant messaging and social media platforms. Internet: Ten years ago going online was more of a leisurely pastime – now all hell can break lose if we can’t access the internet. In 2017, 90% of households in the UK had internet access, up from 57% in 2006. And not only do most of us have access to the internet, we expect it to be fast and reliable. Websites: Want to buy something? Google it. What to know something? Google it. Want to find something? Google it. Whatever we’re after we now expect there to be a website we can easily navigate to that will provide us with the answer. In 2002 there were roughly 3 million websites – today? We’re just shy of 2 billion. The Future? None of us can accurately predict the future but we’re going to stick out necks on the line and hazard a guess as to what we’ll be writing about over the next few years.

AI: Online searches are moving away from physically typing your query into a computer and towards the spoken word. Virtual Assistants are popping up in more households, with people asking Alexa or Siri what the weather will be like, what’s in the news today, and what’s on my shopping list? Artificial Intelligence is rapidly evolving, eliciting both a great deal of excitement and a large amount of fear. Will we develop AI that will help us? Or destroy us? Hacks: Ransomware has become a firm favourite with hackers, and far from fading out this will become more sophisticated. Nobody is immune from an attack – yes, the criminals may gain more from one hit on a large organisation, but the larger the organisation the better the cyber security (in theory anyway). Joe Blogs down on Saltdean Vale won’t have the vast cash resources of a business but is an easier target – and the hackers can attack thousands of Joe Blogs’ in one go. The connected home becomes more of an opportunity, along with “smishing” (text) and vishing (voice) scams. Black Holes: Remember when you had to ask if a hotel had internet? We can foresee this remaining, but become a reverse selling point. Black Hole holidays have existed for a while; a vacation where you are guaranteed no internet access. Debatable this, but maybe we will reach a stage where we want to escape the internet. Two weeks away, but really away. Away from the world wide web so that we can go back to experiencing the real world.

7 Top Tips for Choosing a Care Home The Deans Magazine caught up with Nial Joyce of Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford to get his advice on what to look out for and assess when considering a care home. This useful checklist that Clifden House has compiled can help those looking at care homes as a potential residence for their loved one. The overall message to take away is that quality of care should be a given in any registered care facility. What you should really be on the lookout for is quality of life.

1. General healthcare provision At some point, your loved one may need to see a healthcare professional, so it is important to establish if the care home arranges these visits either to the home itself or with a visit to a GP practice or a hospital checkup. 2. Food and nutrition Sampling a meal when visiting a home is often the best way to decide if the menus are balanced and nutritious with a good variety on offer. Sit down in any home and take the taste test! Doing this will also allow you to see where and how the food is prepared, and how the kitchen staff interact with the residents. 3. Accommodation Ask if you can view the different room options so you can assess the space available, and if there is an option to bring any of their own furniture and to decorate the room so as to make it as homely and personalised as you wish.

other events. It is important that residents are stimulated and also have trips out to remain part of the community. 6. Visiting Take a look at the surrounding area. What are the parking facilities like? Is it accessible by public transport? In some instances, it may be worth the extra travel time to ensure you find the right care home, equipped to care for your relative. Are there set visiting times or can you can pop in whenever it suits? Enquire about the best times to visit, and if there is an option for a guest to stay overnight. 7. Practical issues Most residents will have valuables they want to keep safe so ask about the security provision for this. The general security of the home should also be established. What checks are in place to stop unwanted people coming in, or residents wandering out? Does the care home have a pet policy? Find out about this early on so you can plan what to do with a pet. As well as monthly or weekly costs, care homes may have additional charges such as phone calls, broadband, TV licence and so on, so ask about this at every home you visit. For the full downloadable checklist that you can print off and take with you on your visit, please call Clifden House on 01323 896460 or email office@clifdenhouse.co.uk.

4. In & around the home Take note of how many staff are on duty. Are they friendly, caring and interacting with individual residents? If your loved one has reduced mobility, it is important to take note of accessibility around the home and grounds. 5. Services and activities Stimulation and an active lifestyle is key to ensuring residents can really live as full a life as possible with their dementia. Ask about activities on offer. There is so much that is still open to the individual with dementia whether music, movement, creativity, sports and many

Osteopathy tips

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

New Year Resolutions What’s the Point? There is a very good point to goal setting at any time of year, not just at New Year. When you set a goal for something you really want/desire to do and aim for it, you are more likely to reach it, especially eliciting help and support of someone who can guide you. Individual Goals: Earlier this year, a yoga student of mine wanted to do a headstand free standing for a least one second for the first time in her life, before she turned 50. With this aim in mind, and with regular focus we gently worked towards building the needed strength over time. I guided her in the safe steps to follow in class and at home and she was delighted to achieve her goal. Groups Goals: In September, I invited my yoga students to set goals of something they really wanted to achieve before the Xmas party. Making sure the goals were SMART, we monitored them along the way to accommodate changing circumstances. The group focus was an added benefit and everyone achieved their goals the week before the Xmas party. I find great satisfaction witnessing the joy and delight on someone’s face when they achieve a skill that they have aimed for, even though it may have terrified them in the past. Setting Goals: Make it something you really want/desire to do, rather than something you ‘think’ you should do. A simple formula for goal setting is to make the goal S.M.A.R.T: Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve? Measurable: How will you know when you have achieved it, what specifically will you notice? Attainable: Is your goal possible/attainable for you within your time, money, limits, talents and abilities? Relevant: Is this something you really want to achieve and why? Timely: Timelines help us focus and take action. Is the time limit realistic for you to achieve your goal? Top 10 New Year's resolutions, according to a poll: 1. Exercise more (38%) 2. Lose weight (33%) 3. Eat more healthily (32%) 4. Take a more active approach to health (15%) 5. Learn new skill or hobby (15%) 6. Spend more time on personal wellbeing (12%) 7. Spend more time with family and friends (12%) 8. Drink less alcohol (12%) 9. Stop smoking (9%) 10. Other (1%) How I can Help YOU: The Yoga classes I teach and the skills I use along with Integrated Osteopathy and Nutrition can help with much of the above.

Osteopathy Testimonial: I can honestly say I felt a reduction in pain after the first session with Lin Bridgeford. I have always suffered with back issues and was really struggling with lifting, bending and carrying after having my first baby. After further sessions I noticed other aspects changing also; I felt calmer and less stressed, and also noticed that things were shifting in my life related to work and finances. Lin made me feel very comfortable and relaxed; she is very personable and even though she is extremely busy you don’t feel like just a number, which was very important to me. Having had such good responses from her treatments we are now considering taking our 10 month daughter for treatments to assist with her immune system. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Lin. Yoga Testimonial 1: I’ve been attending Lin’s yoga class for almost a year. I have a lung condition, but it hasn’t stopped me from attempting any of the poses. I live at the top of a very steep hill, and recently when my car was off the road, I attempted the dreaded hill on foot and to my delight I found it was nowhere near as difficult as it used to be. In addition, I have a smart watch with a yoga feature and to my absolute surprise, during the last two classes I have used 550\560 calories each session. I also find I sleep better on the days I attend the yoga class. I shall certainly sign up for next year. Yoga Testimonial 2: Since I took up yoga I’ve noticed an improvement in my general levels of energy, flexibility and strength. I’ve been surprised at how energetic the Ashtanga style of yoga is, in a good way. Also I can now balance on one foot when I pull my socks on! I’m 71, so no spring chicken and recently had double hernias fixed and I’m sure the yoga before and after helped with my recovery. I also attend the Pranayama breathing sessions which are both relaxing, fun and informative. Do you know where your lungs are and how they function, well I do now! We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Friends of Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill Nature Reserve Happy New Year to all our volunteers and let’s make it another impressive year on Beacon Hill Nature Reserve. The main focus of our fundraising this year is replacing the 2 big noticeboards at the main entrances to the Nature Reserve. With the extension of the Nature Reserve the map needs updating and this also gives us the opportunity to improve the information and layout. Donations are happily accepted throughout the year and we will be manning stalls at both the Ovingdean Nature and Conservation Day, Ovingdean Village Hall on 23 June and the Rottingdean Village Fair on 4 August. The next big project for our volunteers is to finish off renewing the steps in the woods at the Court Ord Road end of the hill. They were installed approximately 3 years ago and due to heavy usage (this is a good thing!) are virtually nonexistent now leaving walkers to have to negotiate a steep slope. This will, hopefully, be rectified by the end of January (weather permitting). Our work at this time of year is generally scrub bash and path maintenance but please see below our rough calendar of events to see what task catches your fancy. Jan-June : Scrub bash, path maintenance, ivy ringing, sheep fencing July-August : Ragwort pulling

September-December : Scrub bash, path maintenance, sheep fencing Many hands make light work and we always welcome new volunteers to join our regular outings. We meet 10.00 at the Longhill Road, Ovingdean entrance to the Nature Reserve. No specific skills are required just a willingness to help out. Sturdy footwear, layers and gardening gloves are recommended. Tools are provided but if you have a pair of secateurs please bring them. Workdays are the 2ⁿ Wednesday and 4 Friday of the month – upcoming dates are 26 January, 14 and 23 February. If you would like further information we can be found at :E-mail : FOBeaconHill@gmail.com Telephone : 01273 983000 Facebook : www.facebook.com/beaconhillrottingdean

Local history - Part 69

Taylors of Rottingdean

A recent discovery was a board used as a scaffold board during the renovation of a garage in Park Crescent. On the reverse of the board was painted “Taylors of Rottingdean Ltd.” This was obviously the original fascia sign for the garage that once housed four ‘luxury’ coaches in the 1960’s. This led to some interesting research into the part played by Taylors in the transport history of Rottingdean. James Taylor, a stockman, and his wife Esther were living in Buxted in 1890.They had three children: James, 10, Lucy, 11 and Ernest aged 6. Tragically he died after being gored by a bull at Ripe in July that year. In need of support, Esther moved to Rottingdean to be nearer her brother. Young James became a conductor on the Royal Oak horse bus run by Frederick Thomas which carried people from Rottingdean to Brighton. This ran in competition with Stephen Welfare’s horse bus run from the White Horse Inn. An account of such a journey may be found in Angela Thirkell’s book ‘Three Houses’ available from the Grange Gallery. The route was covered by a motorbus, then taken over by Tilling’s at which point James resigned to set up on his own as a carrier with a horse drawn covered wagon which he had built for him in Jubilee Street.

The vans were eventually replaced by Taylor’s Luxury Coaches in the 1960’s, four of which can be seen photographed at the Park Crescent Garage.

Young Jim, who you see perched on the running board as a lad, became the first Mayor of Brighton to come from Rottingdean. This was in 1968 when he lived at 63 Marine Drive. That year he opened the original Churchill Square with some fairly typical accolades. Unfortunately, he stated that the scheme would be a landmark for the next 100 years just as Kemp Town had remained, reminding the town of the enterprise of a great developer of more than 100 years ago. Little did he know how soon it would be replaced and how soon a third reincarnation was to be planned! While Mayor he presented a working model of Rottingdean mill which still delights children visiting the mill today.

Later he progressed to a Model T Ford motor van. Perched on the step you can see his son Jim (Thomas James Leonard.)

Neighbourhood Watch

Bicycle Theft Pedal cycle theft has been a growing problem over the past few months in East Brighton and particularly in East Saltdean. The police have been very proactive in trying to prevent thefts. November saw a dramatic reduction of reported crimes and many cycles have been recovered and police are now trying to re-unite the cycles with their owners. The police are also working with local bicycle shops to promote cycle safety and raise awareness of thefts, and to encourage the purchase of good quality locks.

Local Slimming World Group

Slimming World News Two years ago Ken and Joanna walked into Woodingdean Slimming World. Joanna had tried before but was so scared what people might think of her, she had asked Ken to go.

Let's not forget about Ken, the hubby , the support , well he has gone on to lose 3 Stone and also is now a Target member, and a part of the Social team, he too has made other changes, he is now vegetarian.

Joanna had gained weight over the years ,through pregnancy and other life struggles. She came thinking people would judge her and was self conscious. Natalie the Consultant at group said " I could see this couple looking out of their comfort zone".

Joanna has completed a 50km walk, and abseiled the Spiniker Tower for charity. She really is Wonderwoman.

Joanna is vegetarian and wondered how that worked at Slimming World. Ken still ate meat. They soon realised they could eat casseroles, stews, tagines using fresh food. Weeks went on and Joanna began to realise that her input into group was just as important as everyone else and her confidence grew, she chatted shared, and became a great part of group. She still wasn't very good at receiving praise.

As a family they have also made changes and part of that has included adopting 2 rescue dogs from Spain, which are now walked everyday as part of their fitness routine. If you would like to find out more about losing weight and feeling great come along to group at St.Patrick's Church, Broad Green, Woodingdean.

After a while Joanna realised she was pregnant, she was worried about gaining weight! But this time was different Joanna said " I knew I wanted to keep going. Joanna went on to have a daughter and when she gave birth she had not gained a single lb! Joanna has now lost 6 1/2 Stone, and is at Target. Whilst transitioning from being a Vegetarian to Vegan. She still attends group every week and is now a vital member of the Social team and a massive support to all members (and me) who come through that door, as she still knows how that felt.

Do You have a Passion for Fashion? Invest in yourself, by giving Martlets the gift of your time. Increase your social circle and learn new skills by giving a shift to one of the hospice’s shops in Peacehaven, Rottingdean or Woodingdean. Martlets hospice supports local people living through a terminal illness; allowing them to live their lives to the full by providing practical care and emotional support when it matters most.

Martlets is looking for volunteers aged 16 and over to volunteer in its Peacehaven, Rottingdean and Woodingdean shops. To find out more please get in touch with our shops directly via email sarah.achucarro@martlets.org.uk or call 07823 344723 you can also enquire in the store.

Volunteering at one of the Martlets shops is great fun and it’s a fantastic opportunity to understand how retail works. You’ll be part of one of their warm and friendly teams, quickly building confidence to gain experience in visual merchandising, customer service and sales. Allison Martin from the hospice’s Retail Team said, “If you have just a few hours a week to spare then volunteering for one of our shops is an excellent way to get involved with a local charity. You’ll be hands-on right from the start and will see how your efforts really make a difference to families in the local area. Staff at the Peacehaven shop: Wendy Janis Jo & Lez.

Cinema Saltdean Film Review

Hidden Figures The true untold story of women at NASA. ‘Hidden Figures’ is a comedy - but not like ‘Carry On’ films are comic. ‘Hidden Figures’ is about racism - but not like ‘Selma’ is about racism. It’s about gender equality but not like ‘Atomic Blonde’. So, what is it? Firstly, you need to wind the tape back to 1961, America, and the space race. Now imagine three African- American women working at NASA. Add to that, that these women are highly capable mathematicians. These are special women with extraordinary talents, who are eventually destined to play a vital role in getting rockets into space but not without a struggle - and they struggled primarily because they were black. The film is set at a time of blatant racism in the US. ‘Hidden Figures’ is the true story of three women making their mark in a male-dominated environment, operating in less-informed social and political times. This is a film about oppression. Nicely-balanced performances rescue the film from being a heavy-handed diatribe about racism; and, instead, focus on the lives and experiences of the three talented women. It makes the film an easy watch: it’s funny and entertaining, yet still able to deliver messages of inequality. There are many instances of this: one such is when Dorothy (Octavia Spencer - ‘The Help’, ‘The Shack’ and ‘The Shape of Water’) goes to the library just trying to find the right book, but it is in a part of the library to which she cannot gain admittance due to her race. Another, when Mary Janelle Monáe (‘Moonlight’ ‘Rio2’) is reminded that she must sit in the back of the court room, again because of her race. Then there’s Katherine (Tarji P Henson ‘Empire’, ‘The Strange Case of Benjamin Button’ and ‘The Karate Kid’) who runs across the whole campus just to find a bathroom that she is allowed to use, never once complaining about it until she is publicly berated about her use of time.

Cert. PG

The film also stars Kevin Costner (‘Dances with Wolves’, ‘Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves’ and ‘The Bodyguard’) who appears as the apparently hard-nosed boss Al Harrison, although he has a soft spot somewhere and is less preoccupied with discrimination than are his colleagues. Unaware, however, of Dorothy’s bathroom plight, it is he who does the public berating. It’s hard to look back and remember just how exciting those space-race times were. It’s even harder to imagine what sort of lives those anonymous white-shirted figures lived. We used to see them sat in front of primitive computer screens, looking at unintelligible data. It’s harder still to recall seeing any women in that environment, least of all black women, but they were there all right. This is a film that takes a sly and funny approach to an important subject. It never forgets, however, that we go to the cinema to be entertained: just the thing for a gloomy January night. Join us next month when we’re off to the heath for the uplifting comedy ‘Hampstead’ with Brendan Gleeson and Diane Keeton. Jon

Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions

Lions Latest News If you have ever put a coin in a collection, supported one of our projects, attended an event we have organised or been involved with our Lions Club in any way - thank you. We are proud to help at the heart of local communities with every penny raised going direct to good causes. Not one penny is spent on administration as all running costs are funded by members. Starting off this month with the Co-op, thanks to their local customers, they recently presented us with a cheque for £4,240.99 at the Longridge Avenue branch. This was from monies voted to us and raised by local Coop members. This means a lot to us, as it is local people that have kindly supported us – thank you everyone! Also, over £137 was raised from donations made on the day. On behalf of the Lions, I would like to thank the Co-op for their great support and for the tremendous generosity of their customers. With the money presented, we will be contributing locally towards the 'Books for Children' project. This scheme aims to give reading books to every child in their first year at school. We will be repeating the scheme we started this year and donating a book to each reception class child in the five primary schools in our area again in 2018. The Lions hope that their gift of these books will have the lasting benefit of giving the children a lifelong love of reading and learning.

To sustain our service activities, Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions will hope to have another busy year in 2018 raising funds and consequently supporting charities and projects in the local community – let’s hope this will continue for a long time to come. The Rottingdean Lions Fayre (16 June) and our Saltdean Gala (14 July) are good examples, and we do take part in the Rottingdean Village Fair. Whilst being immensely successful events they are labour intensive and voluntary help at these events is always welcome. If you know a Lion please have a chat with them if you would like to help out at an event this year. Or you can use the contact details listed below. Help us make 2018 our best fundraising year yet. As this is the January edition of the Deans Magazine, Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club would like to wish all the readers of this magazine a prosperous New Year with, above all, good health. Also, the Lions would like to thank all the Deans Magazine readers that supported them during 2017 If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities or would like to lodge an interest in helping us at our fundraising events please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. Lion Roger Bluff

Moreover, some members of the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions attend at a school to read with the children, encouraging their interest in reading with a steady improvement in reading ages. Overall, this project will have a significant impact on the lives of young people in the community offering them a great start in their education. Last month we once again entertained around 72 senior citizens at our 2017 Christmas lunches. If anyone would like, or you know someone that may be interested, to join our mailing list for invites to these lunches or our summer outings, please contact us. Other major service activities during last year included the ‘Message in a Bottle’ scheme and we also supported drop off points for collecting used spectacles.
