Welcome
Welcome to the July Edition… This month sees the end of the school term, and for many, our daughter included, a change of school. She has made many friends at Saltdean Primary School, and luckily some of them will be starting the new term with her at Peacehaven Community School in September. Thank you to all the teachers at Saltdean Primary for looking after both our children over the past 10 years, I know they both enjoyed their time there. Other changes this month include saying a sad farewell to our photographer - Lynette Lawlor. Lynette has been responsible for the wonderful front covers since November 2011, but is now handing the mantle on to Colette Langton who provides the stunning image on the cover of this edition. Colette is of course local as well, and no doubt known to many of you already through her photographic work. Keith - Editor

Rottingdean Artist of the Spring month Music Festival
Rafael Berrio Columbian born Rafael Berrio is a sculptor whose work is concerned with ecology and the environment. He carves iconic objects from timber and driftwood reclaimed from the sea to reveal the inner forms that appear within the wood. His Latin American and African motifs and symbols reference the connection between man and nature. He has undertaken a range of exhibitions and lectures in Spain and UK . Rafael says “I work from reclaimed timber and driftwood from the sea. Each piece of wood is unique, worked on by natural forces and formed by the environment. I feel it is a working partnership with the materials rather than my imposing a preconceived idea onto the wood. In 2002 I worked on a project called ‘Faces of Nature’ using driftwood sculptures that culminated in a large scale show of my work at Sussex University. The issues I wanted to address included sustainable development, Human Rights, pollution, colonialism and the rights of indigenous peoples. Indigenous Ceremonies, an exhibition of 21 sculptures in Spain, represented the exploitation of the Amazon and its Indian communities This led to the acclaimed body of work, Faces of Nature – 13 sculptures representing the heritage of African and indigenous peoples, symbolizing the foundation of their culture; an ecological and educational project first shown at the Creativity and Cultural Diversity Conference at Sussex University in 2002.”
His drawings are worked quickly in pencil or in ink, images evolving as if from dreams or memories. Places, people and creatures emerge from a complex history interwoven with Latin American symbols, mythology and the environment. Wonderfully detailed, Rafael’s drawings depict intricately connected human and animal forms which seem to dance across the paper in a rich and esoteric narrative. The paintings are a colourful expression of his passion for nature and draw upon an imagination full of symbolism. Dream sketches is an ensemble of paintings, drawings and sketches. His exhibitions are truly magnificent and are not to be missed. They have a presence that will stay with you. All this summer they are in the Grange Art Gallery Grounds Rottingdean www.facesofnature.info

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 46
Shattered dreams. Something we have been doing a lot of lately is replacing screens: laptop screens, smart phone screens and iPad screens. A cracked or scratched screen means that your technology is pretty useless, so here are some tips to keep you from having to pay for a repair. Without doubt, the most common cause of damage is from dropping the device. There is no cure for “butter fingers” but you can still take measures to limit the damage. If you have invested in a shiny new smart phone or tablet, it will have set you back a pretty penny or two – don’t then scrimp on a protective cover. There are some great products out there to suit any device, and if you buy quality this could help keep your mobile technology safe. Think about where you are carrying your phone – back pockets are very useful for storing a myriad of things, but it doesn’t take much for a phone to become dislodged and end up at best on the sofa, at worst down the toilet….
When carrying your laptop it is equally as important to give it a proper bag and to ensure that the plug is stored away from the computer – very little pressure is needed for the plug to crack the screen. It’s tough keeping the kids off iPads and phones these days – those games are just so tempting. But small children also have a penchant for sticky things – and sticky things and technology are not a good mix. And what about a little scratch? This can spell total disaster for something as precious as an iPad, so always ensure you clean any screen with a specialised cleaning solution – DO NOT USE WINDOW CLEANER! Taking a few extra moments to care for your technology’s screens could save you money in the long run.

Rottingdean Village Fair
19
Rottingdean Village Fair The first village fair in Rottingdean was held in 1926 and was opened by Mrs Baldwin, wife of Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin. There was a best baby contest, the prettiest ankle contest and the Joyful Imps performed various dances. The highlight that year was the greasy pole with a leg of lamb at the top which provided great amusement. The fair was suspended during World War 2 and when it started up again it was opened by Cicely Courtneidge and the following year by the comedian Jimmy Edwards. Other famous personalities who opened the fair have included Fred Perry, "Uncle Mac", Alan Melville, Dick Emery, Tommy Trinder and more recently Michael Aspel.

Ovingdean Gardening Club Ovingdean Gardening Club has been flourishing in the village for over 30 years. We now have over 70 members from all over the Deans catchment area. We are affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society which means, among other things, a free visit to Wisley every year. We meet on the first Thursday evening of every month and there are a variety of activities arranged including speakers on a wide range of topics, a plant auction, quiz night, festive meal and a bring a plate supper. The highlight of the year is the Annual Village Show. This year it will be held on Saturday 10 August. The Village hall is transformed by the huge variety of flowers, fruit and vegetables, hanging baskets, patio plants, flower arrangements, cookery and photography. Members of the public are very welcome from 2pm. Members of the gardening club are encouraged to enter as many of the categories as they wish. It is a really fun event, competitive but friendly. The club also runs outings throughout the year. We have been to McBeans Orchids at Cooksbridge and Leeds Castle already this year and in September will be going to
Chichester Harbour for a boat trip followed by a visit to West Dean Gardens. If you are interested in joining or would like some more information, please visit our website at www.ovingdeangardening.webs.com or telephone Richard or Angie on 303183. We look forward to hearing from you or seeing you at the show.

Local history
Local History - Part 16
What is a Dean? Mike Laslett
The name dean is derived from the Saxon word denu which refers to a long winding valley, hence modern names such as Rottingdean, Saltdean, Bevendean, Coldean, and Hollingdean Similarly the name coombe is derived from the Saxon word cumb which refers to a short broad valley such as the one you will see at Wild Park as you travel northwards along Lewes Road towards the Sussex University. Hence the modern names Telscombe and Moulscoomb. Last month’s article was about Rudyard Kipling the great writer and poet who lived with his family at the Elms, Rottingdean during the 1890’s. He started his working life as a journalist and his talents of observation and powers of description are self-evident in his poem ‘Sussex’ where one stanza describes the chalk downs thus: “No tender-hearted garden crowns, No bosomed woods adorn Our blunt, bow-headed, whale-backed Downs, But gnarled and writhen thorn— Bare slopes where chasing shadows skim, And, through the gaps revealed, Belt upon belt, the wooded, dim, Blue goodness of the Weald.”
planktal skeletons deposited on the bed of warm seas which stretched right across modern day Europe. The North and South Downs were once one large dome but erosion and cracking caused the top to disappear leaving The Weald in between to which Kipling refers. The whale-backed downs that he so clearly describes feature long winding valleys but where are the rivers which carved them out? There are none, since chalk is porous and any rainwater percolates through to water table. The erosion of the valleys was caused by glacial melt water in more recent geological times. However they may have been formed you will certainly enjoy a stroll around the deans at this time of year!
These white chalk downs were formed between 60 and 100 million years ago during what was known as the Cretaceous period. They were formed by

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Lemons Lemons are thought to have first grown in India, Burma and China originating from a hybrid between a sour orange and a citron. Known to the Jews of Jerusalem in 90BC, they entered Europe in southern Italy in 1C AD, in the time of ancient Rome and only introduced into Persian, Iraq and Egypt as late as 700 AD and spread though the Mediterranean and Arab world between 1000-1150 AD with substantial cultivation by 15C. Christopher Columbus brought the seeds to the Caribbean, spreading them throughout the new world and they were increasingly planted in California and Florida by 19C Nutritional Value Their nutritional value was first recognised in 1747, when James Lind, a Scottish naval physician conducted the first clinical trial based on the theory that citrus fruits cured scurvy. Lemon juice added to the diets of seamen cured scurvy, though vitamin C was not known about at this time.

Neighbourhood Watch
Your Community Needs You! Neighbourhood Watch began life in the UK over 30 years ago in response to rising crime, but today, as times change, it now covers all aspects of keeping our community safe! Our main aims are to prevent crime, reduce fear of crime and improve safety. It’s about people looking out for each other to create strong, cohesive communities that benefit everyone. Anonymity is the offender’s strongest weapon. NHW takes away that weapon by acting as the eyes and ears of the community. As a result it has been shown that NHW areas are far LESS likely to be targeted by criminals. Crime cannot flourish in a community that cares! DO YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY AND MAKING YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD A BETTER & SAFER PLACE TO LIVE? IF YOU DO WE NEED YOU!!!!!! CO-ORDINATOR We have over 100 Scheme Co-ordinators in Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean (SR&O) but still have roads that are not covered. Get Fit with Marco Gasco
Is running making you fatter? On waking I have two sets of brown eyes watching my every move, fast becoming shadows following closely on my heels, even into the bathroom if I would allow it! It’s a daily ritual; my two German Shepherds going for their morning walk come rain, hail or shine! Luckily we live in a beautiful area so it’s no hardship once we are out, seeing all sorts of people exercising including running, which is particularly close to my heart, I love to run. Why do so many people run? I think that it is partly to do with the endorphin rush; it feels good, gives you a sense of achievement and is easily accessible. The greatest problem with running is the majority of people are not physically strong enough to run properly. It requires a tremendous amount of muscle, tendon and ligament support to cope with the huge forces put through the joints of your legs and physiologically it makes sense that running only be performed by those in good shape who are strong enough to handle the repetitive forces applied to the body. Throughout my years of experience as a trainer I have found that the majority of people, who begin or return to running, do so as a means to lose weight and/or get back in shape. The fact is that initially you will burn more calories and yes it is likely you will lose weight. Our bodies however are amazing machines and very quickly adapt becoming more efficient. Now that your running has improved, your body has become more efficient at storing energy and guess what….it burns less calories and as studies have shown you can actually gain weight! You now have two options: Increase the distance or Increase the pace Upping distance takes longer and increases stress on the joints, a higher pace is just plain hard to maintain and the reality is that the majority of us regress back towards one paced runs for the same
distance each time, probably even following the same route! So should you just STOP RUNNING? ● No. If you enjoy endurance and love to run like me then carry on, being sure to progress gradually and ensure your body is strong enough to cope with the high stresses of your sport by including regular strength and functional fitness programmes in your training. ● Yes. If you are simply running to lose weight, it is time to re-think your strategy. In next month’s column we will examine the alternative exercises to running you can do. They use minimal equipment are extremely time efficient and not expensive. Marco Gasco Owner GoFit Brighton, email; marco.gasco@gofit.co.uk, mobile:07530 37748, www.gofit.co.uk

Skin care

Skin Care with Marianna If you feel that your skin looks tired, dry and a bit dull maybe its time for an organic facial. In this article Marianna of Anti Aging Therapy explains the benefits, as well as giving tips for general skin care. What can you do about it? There are a few simple things that you could do to improve your skin. The easiest and probably most important thing to do is to drink more water. Keeping well hydrated with water rather than other fluids like tea and coffee can make you feel and look better. Dehydration is very bad for your body and makes your skin age faster. Something which could have a positive effect to your body/skin is taking walks near the sea. These walks can maximise the amount of oxygen within your blood and again you should feel and look better. Take a look at your skin care products: How old are your products? Do you use them on a regular basis? Do you use the right product for your skin type and age? Are you using Organic Skin Care?
Just to give you an example of how much your skin absorbs, here is a small experiment for you to try. Rub the feet of your partner with garlic and after 20 minutes kiss him/her. They will smell of garlic!!! So next time you use strong chemicals to wash your dishes, without gloves, please stop and think. Chemicals are going into your body and your hands are going to look older sooner. You can, treat yourself with an Organic Facial. Organic Facial would be a good way to help your skin to refresh and rejuvenate no matter how old you are. My Luxury Facial includes a Face Lift Massage and I use Organic Neil's Yard products. It is a beauty treatment with a holistic approach. What results can you expect?
Why Organic?
The skin will become softer, smoother, toned; Loose skin will become more elastic; Blood circulation will improve; It will increase renewal of the cells and reduce puffiness.
We live in a toxic world but there are some toxins that we could avoid and many of them are in skin care products. If you are not sure what kind of products would be best for your skin come to see me for a FREE consultation.
Interested? Call Marianna on 07960 561874 or visit Peacehaven Chiropractic Clinic to book your appointment.
