Welcome

Welcome to the July Edition… As I write this it seems a good bet that England are out of the World Cup after only their second game, but with Wimbledon, the Tour de France (once again visiting the UK in early July) and the Commonwealth Games starting later this month there is still plenty to look forward to for Sports fans.

As usual there is plenty going on locally too, highlights this month are: local art exhibitions - pg 7; Saltdean Lions Gala - Pg 39; and the Rottingdean Village Fair Pg 61.

Finally I would like to make an apology to Mike Laslett after one of his pictures for the June History article ended up on its side. We do proof check everything several times but some how this was missed.

Mick Bensley & Maggie Edwards Mick BensIey marine and Iandscape artist Mick Bensley was was born by the north Norfolk coast. living by the sea he developed a profound understanding of its moods. Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 58

The Best Computer Buying a new computer can be a costly expense, whether you are looking at getting a traditional desktop, a laptop or a tablet. There is no one solution fits all, no "best computer", as everybody uses their computer in different ways. So how do you decide what's best for you? 5 Check Points Before You Buy 1: The most important thing you need to do is to decide exactly what you want your computer to be able to do - why do you use it? Will your requirements be likely to change? 2: Where will you use it? If it will remain in one room a desktop seems a sensible option, but if you fancy emailing from your garden you will need a laptop or tablet that has suitable wireless capabilities. 3: Can you repair/replace/upgrade it? Whilst most of us will take the utmost care with a new piece of technology accidents do occur - for some machines there is no option to upgrade and for others due to the nature of their manufacture repairs can be very costly.

4: The software matters too - MAC and PCs are different operating systems that require different software, so if you are changing from one system to another you will also need to change all of your software programs. 5: The cost - as with pretty much everything in life, you get what you pay for. There are some very cheap computers out there, but there are reasons why they are so inexpensive. Make sure your "bargain" isn't going to let you down in a matter of weeks. Buying a new computer is a very personal choice if you would like further help and advice based on your own exacting requirements please do get in touch.

New local book Local historian, Douglas d'Enno, author of The Saltdean Story (1985), has had a new book published. The book Entitled Sussex Through Time and published by Amberley Press of Stroud, it records, in nearly 100 pages, the changes and developments which have occurred in the county over roughly the last century. It is a companion volume to his Sussex Coast Through Time which came out in 2012 and follows the same ‘then and now’ format. Sussex Through Time is the first book to portray the numerous and diverse communities of (mainly inland) East and West Sussex through a pairing of rich sepia and stunning colour images. Most of the early pictures have never previously been published and include a number of rarities that can only now be widely enjoyed.

The book is obtainable from Waterstones, WHS, British Bookshops, Tesco, Saltdean Stamps and independent bookshops and is priced at £14.99. The author Douglas d'Enno is a translator who has worked in a freelance capacity since 1995. He contributed for a number of years to local newspapers on local history subjects, in particular as the occasional author of 'nostalgia' pieces in The Argus. He is currently working on a history of Brighton in the Great War, due for publication in the spring of 2015.

Far from simply depicting street scenes, the focus occasionally shifts, with suitable background, to an event, a group of buildings or perhaps even simply a shop or house to illustrate local change - for better or worse - down the years. Sussex Through Time is an important addition to the literature on Sussex and forms a valuable and long-awaited comparative record of most of the settlements lying within this extensive county.

Health & nutrition advice

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Chia Seeds Chia ( Salvia Hispanica) is a flowering plant of the mint family from Mexico and South America, that can sprout in a matter of days. Apparently the 16th-century Aztec Codex Mendoza shows that it was cultivated by the Aztecs in pre-Columbian times and was as important as maize as a food crop. "Chia" means oily. The seeds are mottle-colored brown, gray, black and white, about 1mm in diameter and oval. They are crunchy and slightly nutty in flavour, though quickly develop a mucilaginous gellike coating when soaked as they are hydrophilic, absorbing up to 12 times their weight in liquid, giving the distinctive texture of chia-based beverages.

Alpha-linolenic acid in chia seeds helps to balance the fatty acid profile in the body which helps arteriosclerosis, the cause of coronary heart disease. ALA induces lipid redistribution giving heart and liver protection. Local history

Local History - special feature

Oakleaf Coffee Bar reunion Readers of The Deans Magazine may remember previous features on Saltdean's lively coffee bar, the Oak Leaf, which was open from 1959 to 1962 near the coast road on premises currently occupied by estate agents Cubitt & West. The Tim ‘Top’ Secrett and Elvin Pagely Duo in action

On the evening of 6 June (our D-Day heroes were not forgotten, as they were honoured in a handout placed on each table), some 40 Oakleafers came together for what is thought to be the 12 in a series of reunions – and a hugely enjoyable event it proved to be. Organised by Saltdeaner, Chris Wrapson – who has also arranged the last few reunions – the gathering was a great way to catch up with each other's news over a few drinks and against a background of 1950s/1960s songs energetically performed by Brian Page and Tim Secrett, aka The Tim ‘Top’ Secrett and Elvin Pagely Duo. The nostalgic hits they played encouraged some - especially ladies – to take to the floor and jive, just like in the old days.

Happy faces at one of the tables

A quiz was held on local events and places, with the winning table sharing the £20 prize money, following which a raffle rewarded the winners with some very desirable prizes. An ample and delicious buffet was provided by Heather’s Catering of Peacehaven. The evening was a great success in every way, so much so that a number of Oakleafers enquired at the end of it when the next reunion would be held. Douglas d'Enno

The Lions Gala

Saltdean Lions Gala Saturday 19th July, the Oval Park, Saltdean The Oval is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of parks: a meeting place for walkers, runners, dog owners, skate boarders, tennis players and much more. Well, just inside the entrance to the park, that is adjacent to the conjunction between Arundel Drive East and Linchmere Avenue, a wooden bench offers the ‘best seat in the house’ with fine views over the sea, Lido, Park and Downs providing a delightful spot to take in all these friendly and wonderful activities. However, this view will become even more enlivened on July 19 when various stalls, shows, fun fairs, competitions and sporting events, when once again you can enjoy all this and more at the action packed Saltdean Lions Gala. This traditional gala has been running for well over twenty years, and as a regular event has become increasingly popular over the years with it now being one of the highlights of the summer season in Saltdean. It is held in the Oval Park and runs from 11 am through to 4 pm. Entry is free. The Gala includes various stalls: books, bric-a-brac, plus a fun fair and a coconut shy. You will find other games and stalls along with a bar and the delicious Lions barbeque using locally sourced meat from our local butchers including big sausages and meaty beef burgers with carefully crafted onions. There will be pony rides, races for children, a dog show and for the first time a football tournament. The Saltdean Gala Day Dog Show begins with registration starting from 12 noon with competitions beginning from 1pm. Registration fee will be 75p per dog per class. There will be prizes in all classes including: most handsome dog, prettiest bitch, dog most like owner, cutest puppy, wiggliest tail, best tricks, golden oldie, fanciest dress, scruffiest hound and best rescue. No doubt the ‘dog most like owner’ will be the most hotly contended.

The Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Under 9’s Football Tournament will have five teams from Rottingdean, Saltdean and Telscombe with kick off at 10 am. A full Programme will be available on the day. Please note the teams have been finalised, children will not be able to turn up on the day to play. Arena events during the day will include: dancing; martial arts; athletics for children and adults; performing arts and a colourful display from the Cruzeiro do Sul Brazilian Carnival Group. Draw tickets will have been sold prior to the event and these will also be sold on the day with the winner being drawn at the end of the Saltdean Gala. First prize £200! This free event is organised by the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club with all proceeds going to support local charities and community projects. All are most welcome. For further details please see our website or contact: info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org or 08458 339617. ( http://www.rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk/ ) Also, please note that for any local group or small trader that would like to have a stall at the Saltdean Gala, you are welcome to contact John Ewbank on 01273 303735 to check availability.

Neighbourhood Watch

Advice on fitting security locks The enemy of the average house burglar is time and noise. Most burglars can be defeated by reasonable physical security. Police advice is that a 5-lever mortice deadlock is fitted to both the front and back doors with slide bolts both top and bottom - check to BS 3621. French Windows and Patio Doors should be fitted with a security mortice bolt, get specialist advice on fitting these locks. An integral door to the garage should have a 5lever mortice lock and two mortice bolts. Windows should be fitted with key operated window locks; this key should be kept in a secure but easily accessible place. If you want to leave windows open while you sleep, fit window restrictors so they cannot be fully opened, or make sure they are not large enough to allow access to a burglar. You can find a locksmith by visiting the Master Locksmith Association. http://www.locksmiths.co.uk/find-a-locksmith

With summer here please remember to be sensible and keep safe - don't leave windows open in the front of the house while you are in the garden. Remember to lock your doors not just when you leave your premises but also while in the garden. It only takes an opportunist burglar a couple of minutes to get in and out of your home!! Please, please, remember to lock your vehicles over night!! We have once again had reports of items being taken from unlocked cars!!! REMEMBER Unlocked cars and windows in your property could invalidate your insurance!! For more information on NHW please contact Linda Hood 01273 306441 email: nhw.srosec@hotmail.co.uk

Thank you notice In May a Saltdean resident lost his wallet in Westfield Avenue. The wallet was found and very kindly handed in at Brighton Police Station. The finder did not leave contact details so no one has been able to thank them. The person who contacted The Deans Magazine didn’t want to publish their name but wanted to say: “My dad is 91 years old and was in the Royal Air Force during World War 2. It is really heart warming to think that someone would do this and restores your faith in the general public. Thank you.”

Staffordshire Road Open House Artwave 2014 This is more than an Open House. We offer workshops, performances, refreshments, a games area for children as well as stunning art and craft. This year’s visual art includes work by Sarah Gregson whose iconic Seaford images are extremely popular for both their humour and style. Kristina Stedman’s paintings and cards beautifully capture the atmosphere of life in Sussex. Karen Hall’s life drawings and paintings express her love and profound understanding of the human body. Bill Savidge’s paintings are both eclectic and beautiful.

Finally, we welcome Vanessa Minall who makes jewellery from the small inner workings of watches creating delicate, lacy wonders. Diane Costello’s handbags need no introduction. The ladies of Sussex flock to any event where her bags are on sale and we are delighted that she is with us again this year.

Rottingdean Village Fair This year’s fair will be held on the Village Green and in Kipling Gardens on Saturday August 2ⁿ between 10.30 and 4.00pm. The theme for the parade is ‘Rottingdean Through the Ages’ so why not come along and join in dressed as a Saxon, Viking, Smuggler, Farmer, Shepherd, Victorian, Edwardian, Vintage, 60s/70s/80s … in fact anything goes so please do join us outside the White Horse Hotel at 10am for a 10.30 start involving a gentle stroll up the High Street and on to the Village Green. The fair will be opened this year by local resident and actor Tony Adams who played the role of Adam Chance in the ground-breaking ITV programme ‘Crossroads’. Programmes at 50p will be on sale in the High Street, during the week before the fair, which includes details of the days events, articles about the history of Rottingdean, a prize quiz, lucky programme draw (first prize £100 with other prizes including tea at The Grand). Programmes give entry to the fair and can also be bought on the day , entry is free to under 16s. There is entertainment throughout the day on the Green including Morris Men, the Salvation Army Band, a jazz group, Zumba dancing, children’s dance groups, a Choir and, of course, Punch and Judy plus many other additional performances. Stalls and side shows include: the amazing Lion’s BBQ and bar (a pint and a burger next to the pond – perfect bliss), bric-a-brac, traditional fair rides with Swing boats, sheep from Beacon Hill, the Sussex Bee Association, a range of local artists and crafts, books, candy floss, the incredible Whiteway Sandwich, cake and tea stall, flowers, Vintage magazines, records and cds, ‘Win a Mini’, local information stalls, the classy Peticoat Lane clothing stall, ice-creams, Coconut Shy, Roll-a-10p, etc, etc. Additionally there is an opportunity to see a Shetland Pony and a Ford Model T.

All profits from the day are given to a range of charities including Combat Stress, the Sussex Cancer Fund, the RNLI and specialist animal charities. Do come along and amble around as it is always a really wonderful day for all ages and tastes. The location is close to major bus routes, plus there is a large car park on the left just after the fair driving north. Email: rottingdeanvillagefair@gmail.com Twitter: rottingdeanfair
