Welcome
3
Welcome to the June Edition… It occurred to me today that it was 5 years ago that we took on The Deans Magazine. Back in 2009 it was called Village Brighton and came out bi-monthly, it was also on A5 paper which made it about 20% smaller than today’s version. The first Deans Magazine was produced in January 2010 with a cover photo taken by Sara Reeve. Since then the magazine has doubled in size and become an important way for people to tell others about their news and events, all of which leads me neatly into my usual reminder to keep your news, events and articles coming in, they really do make the magazine what it is today.

Graham Hanney Figure and portrait painter based in Rottingdean. In 1956, at the age of eleven I was awarded an art scholarship to Loughborough Grammar which streamed kids who showed some talent for art from across the county of Leicestershire. I have always admired draughtsmanship and at that age the people I most admired were illustrators, not artists – Ronald Searle, Norman Rockwell, Giles the cartoonist and the creators of MAD magazine. For me, art was gloomy and depressing - darkly varnished paintings depicting obscure Greek myths or countless Biblical passages generally displayed in dusty Museums and visited on wet Sundays. It did not engage me. Ronald Searle was much more fun and he could draw. My interest in painting and drawing did not come about until I retired and moved to Rottingdean. I was looking around for something to fill my days when I read in The Deans about the Rottingdean Arts Club and subsequently joined it. It was friendly, unstuffy, attracted members of all abilities and offered the opportunity to exhibit in Rottingdean’s very own art gallery, The Grange. How many villages could boast such a showcase? I discovered a real love of figure drawing, which I can practice seven days a week at the Sussex County Arts Club in Bond Street, Brighton. We are so lucky to have these places on our doorstep. I work mainly in acrylics and have exhibited many times at The Grange and various galleries in Brighton, London and the South East and I take on the occasional commission. My influences have changed somewhat over the years. They include the artists Degas, Schiele, Hockney and Lucian Freud but I still love Norman Rockwell and Ronald Searle. Email: ghanney878@gmail.com

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 57
Cloud Computing One thing that we can guarantee is that the weather will do as it pleases - we hope that you are reading this in flaming June rather than on a soggy, cloudy day, but who knows? We know about that type of cloud - but what is cloud computing? If you store and access your information on the cloud it simply means that you aren't storing your data on your own computer - is this a good idea? Is it safe to store all of your important files and information onto somebody else's systems? There are two major advantages of using cloud based systems, for both home users and for businesses, the first of which is mobility. Many businesses need access to their files when out of the office - cloud based systems will allow, for example, your accountant to pop in and see you without bringing a heavy brief case full of paperwork - if they need to access your files they can do using their iPad (or similar).
Secondly, the cloud providers take security very seriously - Google, Microsoft, Apple etc are all much better at security than we are sitting at our own PC. The chances of your computer getting hit by a virus, getting stolen, or your machine failing are far higher than any of the large companies being compromised. What do you have stored on your computer? It's worth you taking five minutes to give that some thought. If you store your priceless photographs on a secure cloud based platform, rather than on your own machine, should the worse happen, your laptop is stolen, or your computer fails, you will still have access to those irreplaceable memories. Cloud systems are both useful and secure, and if you would like to know please get in touch.

Health & nutrition advice
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Raspberries The raspberry is an edible fruit of the Rubus, or rose family. We most commonly eat the red variety though they are also found in black, purple, blue and yellow varieties. Raspberries are rich in polyphenols such as flavinoids, anthocyanins and tannins, which are concentrated in the skins and seeds. Anti-Oxidant Anti-Inflammatory Phytonutrients, particularly the phenolic compounds in raspberries protect against oxidative stress and inflammation, helping to lower diseases related to inflammation and free radical damage such as atherosclerosis, diabetes (type 2), hypertension and obesity. Cancer The anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties are also partly responsible for raspberry's anti-cancer properties. Studies also show chemo-protective and inhibitory properties of raspberries, particularly related to their anthocyanin and tannin content. Obesity and Blood Sugar Tiliroside in raspberry, is a flavonoid with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer and liver-protective properties. Recently it was reported to significantly inhibit body weight gain and visceral (organ) fat accumulation in normal mice. However, a study on obesity-induced mice suggested that tiliroside enhances fatty acid oxidation and helps obesity-induced metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and obesity, though does not suppress body weight gain and visceral fat accumulation. Raspberry Ketones Rheosmin, also known as raspberry ketone is a natural phenolic compound. It is used in perfumery, in cosmetics, and as a food additive to add a fruity odour. It has also been found to block cancer pathways. Raspberry Ketone Weight Loss Pills? These are very popular as the latest weight loss fad and though there is evidence to support the weight loss properties, I am not convinced that pills or eating one particular food is a healthy or lasting way to manage weight issues. Additionally, how can you be sure that the pills you buy contain real raspberries and enough real substance to be effective?
A more sensible way to manage weight issues is to eat a healthy diet, rich in fruit, vegetables and berries and low in toxins and junk. The orchestra effect of a rainbow diet makes the whole better than the sum of the parts as mother nature works in synergy to help protect your health. A side effect of good health is healthy weight management. Use an abundance of good nutrients to help reprogram your biochemistry (metabolic programming) and tastes, while you change your lifestyle and habits, taking regular exercise, sufficient water, rest and sleep as well reducing stress. Get the help and support you need to manage this. Nutritional Values of Raw Raspberries Vitamins: High in vitamin A, C and folate with smaller amounts of vitamin B, E, K. Small amounts of Vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxal-5 phosphate) Minerals: High in potassium; lesser amounts of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus. Traces of iron, sodium, zinc Other: Contain water, carbohydrates, fibre, fatty acids and protein Eat raspberries anytime on their own, with porridge or cereal, as a desert or smoothie or as a snack when you are passing the bush! Eat raw for the fullest nutrition; eat cooked, freeze for later or make jams/jellies. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Local History - Part 27
Rottingdean High Street part 3 Mike Laslett
An enjoyable and informative afternoon stroll may be taken along Rottingdean High Street, concluded by a drink at one of the excellent pubs or tearooms en route. We continue our stroll this month outside The Dene, noting the flint walls on both sides as you walk up the High Street. Having had many owners and functions the southern building was for some time the riding stables of Viscount St. Vincent. Opposite, you will see Prospect Cottage, Aubrey House and North End House. Now separate houses, the first two were once amalgamated to form the home of the famous painter Sir Edward Burne-Jones. At a later date all three were amalgamated to form the home of Sir Roderick Jones, Chairman of Reuters and his wife the writer Enid Bagnold. We now reach Hillside, the first of the four large farmhouses of the village. Its red and grey brick façade is of particular architectural quality. It was built in 1724 as the farmhouse to West Side Farm. Above the date stone you can see a Sun Insurance plaque. You will recall we explained these in last month’s issue. A number of associated structures survive associated with Hillside, including ‘Timbers,’( originally the main barn to West Side Farm,) a threshing barn, flint walls and garden gazebo.
Hillside (above)
Note the Victorian post box set in the wall just north of the house where the road turns right as it reaches Court House, formerly the farmhouse of Court Farm. Its fine façade of knapped and squared flint dates to the 18th century. Its neighbour, Down House, also to the north of the Green, is another former farm house with fine knapped and squared flintwork. The former farmhouse to East Side Farm, it dates in part to 1619, although the façade you see today is Georgian. The fourth farm, Challoners, is secluded by trees and barely visible from the High Street. It is by far the most prestigious of the four farms and was originally the Manor House serving Challoners Farm, once known as Manor Farm. The house was owned by Thomas Challoner in the 15th century, before being owned by successive generations of the Beard family for nearly 300 years. The most interesting feature is the polygonal glazed porch known as the Trafalgar window.

Save Our Deans
Meadow Vale Fields under threat from development The future of a beautiful area of land off Ovingdean Road remains uncertain following proposals to build over 100 houses on the site. In early May dozens of protestors from Rottingdean, Ovingdean and Woodingdean met at Brighton Town Hall to voice their concerns at proposals from Lightwood Property to build 112 houses on the area of land known as Meadow Vale Fields. Brighton and Hove Council had to debate the issue as it had received around 1,600 signatures demanding that the council maintain its previous commitment to the Meadow Vale Fields site remaining part of the city’s “urban fringe” (green field site) after a government inspector told the council to reconsider such areas for housing. Councillors heard representations from the Deans Preservation Group (DPG) on the issue and, following a full council debate, agreed that the petition should be considered by planning officers when plans for future housing across the city are finalised this summer. The sitting Brighton Kemp Town MP Simon Kirby and the two prospective parliamentary candidates (Davy Jones for the Greens, and Labour’s Nancy Platts) have all declared they are opposed to the proposals. The DPG also has considerable support amongst city councillors, but the position of Rottingdean Parish Council appears more uncertain. The extent of local opposition to the proposals became clear in early April at a rally organised at Longhill School (April 17) when over 500 people attended. While recognising the need for housing across the city of Brighton and Hove, the DPG points out the site was
originally included within the South Downs National Park and provides a vital natural wildlife corridor between the main area of the park and the Beacon Hill and Mount Pleasant Nature Reserves, above the village of Rottingdean. It is also an important site of biodiversity, containing a number of rare species of plant, butterflies, trees and birds, and has traditionally been used as a place of recreation for horse owners from the Deans area. The DPG – under the banner SOD ‘Save our Deans’ – says if the site were developed on it would be disastrous in terms of increased traffic on the already overcrowded Falmer Road, could prove a potential flooding concern and will have a severely detrimental effect on the provision of local services such as schools and doctors’ surgeries. New developments must include an element of affordable housing and there is little likelihood of that taking place at the Meadow Vale Fields site, the DPG contends. They also point to a number of expensive new infill developments in Rottingdean where houses remain unsold. The development would moreover mean that there would no longer be any break between the three villages of Ovingdean, Rottingdean and Woodingdean, creating an unbroken semi-urban sprawl in what is supposed to be a rural fringe area of the city. Neuro Linguistic Programming and the benefits
What is NLP? Jayne Hopper
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a tool to understand and rethink how an individual makes sense of the world.
provided that will reap many benefits for your health and well being.
NLP studies the individual experiences of a person’s thoughts, actions and feelings, as we are all unique and react to certain stimulants and situations differently. The interactions or ‘programming’ that goes on between the brain, (neuro) our language, (linguistics) and our bodies are responsible for our behaviour, whether it be ineffective or effective. Certain beliefs that we have carried around for years, shape our behaviour, our decisions and ultimately our actions. These beliefs can hold us back and form limiting ideas which can affect our day to day living and stop us from achieving our goals or gaining our maximum potential.
NLP can help you with phobias or any other negative overwhelming emotional issues that are holding you back from enjoying life. Phobias are created when someone has had a unpleasant experience, this triggers an irrational negative emotion which may be learnt in only a few seconds, thus demonstrating the mind’s ability to instantly learn a survival mechanism. However, these emotions can grow and get stronger every time the person experiences the original trigger. Sometimes these emotions can affect your well being and become a real nuisance, these impact on your abilities, as well as affecting your loved ones.
How will NLP help you?
With my expert nutrition advice and certain mapping techniques, together we can turn your weakness (eg chocolate) into something you can control.
NLP can enable you to improve how you think, feel and behave, you will be given an understanding and insight into how you may be holding yourself back from reaching your full potential and optimising your health. Techniques will be

Free Yourself, Find Your Perfect Handyman Or Cleaner Your house is not only your home but also your biggest asset so you want it to stay in tip top condition. Taking care of those little maintenance issues before they cause additional problems can save you time and money, ensuring that your are warm and comfortable while protecting your valuable asset. We all have those irritating maintenance issues that we end up living with rather than resolving. There never seems to be enough time to get around to doing them or we are concerned about the cost. Our busy lives can be demanding so the last thing that you want to do on the one weekend that you have available is to do the garden or fix that dripping tap. The answer is to find someone to do the work but that can be a job in itself. There seems to be a multitude of businesses offering various solutions so it can be difficult to choose one. Then there is the issue of finding a different one for each job. You need someone that you can trust to do the work properly and trust that you are getting a fair price for the work that you want done. That is if they even bother to turn up in the first place.
Ask your friends and family, they may know someone who has had a good experience. You may browse the review sites but even here you should exercise caution as it is often possible for traders to write their own thus rendering the system unreliable. Make sure that the company is insured and reputable. A landline phone number and an office address indicate that you will have someone else to talk to if you experience any difficulties. The good guys are out there so persevere and set yourself free to enjoy your time doing whatever takes your fancy. Amherst Property services, cleaning and maintenance, 01273 219 921, www.amherstpropertyservices.com.
And on top of that there is the cleaning. How much more relaxing would life be if the weekly cleaning is done while you are out leaving your evenings and weekends to yourself? Once again you are confronted with finding the right person or company to help you. Ideally you will find a company that can cover both cleaning and maintenance. One number to call and a contact that will know you and more importantly who you will know, someone to help when you need them. This is the crux of the matter. The right company will be there for all of your property requirements when you need them and offer you a service that you are happy with at the right price. Vetting them is the beginning of your selection process. Recommendation is undoubtedly the best way to get the best help.

Rottingdean News

Kipling Festival awarded Heritage Lottery fund grant of £6100 Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded Kipling Festival Rottingdean a grant of £6,100, it was announced in April. This exciting project: Rudyard Kipling in Rottingdean: The Calm before the Storm, led by the newly formed community association, Kipling Festival Rottingdean, has been given £6,100 to celebrate the life and genius of this timeless storyteller in the seaside village where he lived with his young family. From 10 July 2014 to 22 July 2014, the Rottingdean Village Green will come alive with theatre, vintage games, art exhibits, readings, contests, talks and tours. This multigenerational salute to the pied piper of Sussex by the Sea will create opportunities for local groups like the Rottingdean Preservation Society, actors, artists and schools to work together with volunteers to recreate the look and feel of the village as it was in the Edwardian Era on the Eve of World War One. Commenting on the award, Marcus Bagshaw, curator of The Kipling Room in The Grange Museum, said: “We love that we live in the village where Rudyard Kipling created some of his best known works, especially those for children like The Jungle Books and The Just So Stories which reflect one of the
happiest and most productive periods of his life. We are proud and excited about re-igniting interest in his legacy and exploring his astonishing influence on the historic and cultural world of his time.” Stuart McLeod, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund South East, said: “Sharing Heritage is a wonderful opportunity for communities to delve into their local heritage and we are delighted to be able to offer this grant so that the team behind 'Rudyard Kipling in Rottingdean: The Calm Before the Storm’ can embark on a real journey of discovery. Heritage means such different things to different people, and HLF’s funding offers a wealth of opportunities for groups to explore and celebrate what’s important to them in their area.” Simon Kirby, MP, said, “I welcome this grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help celebrate the work of one of Rottingdean’s most famous residents. Rottingdean is a great place and I hope this festival is enjoyed by many local residents and helps encourage more people to visit the area.”

Lions Fayre Spring Rottingdean Rottingdean Music

Festival
Rottingdean Lions Fayre Saturday June 14th, on the green, Rottingdean There is something special about a traditional English summer fayre and the many happy memories they evoke for all the family. The magic of the various stalls, shows, fun fairs and all normally set in beautiful surroundings. Well, once again, you can enjoy all this and more at the exquisite Rottingdean Lions Fayre. This traditional fayre has been running for well over forty years, and as a regular event has grown significantly in stature over the years with it becoming one of the highlights of the summer season in Rottingdean. It is held on the green in the village and, as has always been the case, entry is free. Walking round you will come across a book stall, Punch and Judy, a fun fair and a coconut shy. You will find other games and stalls along with a bar and the world famous - in Rottingdean at least - Lions barbeque. The barbeque uses locally sourced meat from our local butchers – the big sausages and meaty beef burgers with carefully crafted onions will delight your taste buds – reason enough to be world famous. Please do not miss this barbeque if this is to your taste. Also, ice cream, and candy floss will be readily available.
Tombola tickets will be available for purchase during the day. Draw tickets will also be sold and these will be drawn at the end of the Saltdean Gala in July. This event is organised by the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club with all proceeds going to support local charities and community projects. All are most welcome. For further details please contact: Geoff Rhodes. rhodes22@ntlworld.com or 07767 665 895 Also, please note that for any local group or small trader that would like to have a stall at the fayre, you are welcome to contact John Ewbank on 01273 303735 to check availability. The famous Lions barbeque
Arena events during the day will include dancing, martial arts and various other activities demonstrated by local organisations.

61 We all love going on holiday, especially to sunny seaside destinations, so what better setting than the Costa Del Sol for this comedy about a group of tourists who are just looking for a get away from it all holiday. Fly Me Holidays are the tour operator who aim to ensure their clients are kept fully entertained from start to finish, however their skills are put to the test when it becomes apparent that the holidaymakers have their own agendas, including illicit liaisons and murder! The Bell family, Mum, Dad, Gran and their daughter Laura are all looking for a relaxing holiday, however Gran has hidden a strange object in her suitcase which causes concern at the airport and when it disappears from her room at the Hotel, the Fly Me staff are left to pick up the pieces. Emily and Tom are on their honeymoon, but his surprise destination is not the one Emily had in mind and their relationship is put under strain as she comes to terms with her new situation. Mo and her three friends are on a girly holiday and their mission is to try as many different cocktails as possible, but Mo has a secret, and someone is watching her. Louise has just won her way through to the second round of X-Factor and is on her way to the judges’ house when she meets Frank, her Fly Me rep, she’s trying to stay focused on her future but he pops up when she least expects it. Charles Nicholas is trying to ignore his wife’s indiscretions but she is increasingly becoming an embarrassment to him, when he seeks solace with another woman he unleashes a deadly reaction. St Maud’s School for Girls and their teacher are on their way to the Torremolinos Dance Competition, watch out for Peacehaven’s own very talented Harlequin dancers as they go through their routines. With the heady combination of cocktails and sunshine, cruises and nightlife, relationships are formed which will last far longer than the holiday itself. Mix in to the comedy some well loved toe tapping songs set to entertaining routines and you have a recipe for a fabulous show.
