Welcome

Welcome to the March Edition In this month’s edition we have a feature on a new local tradesman - Mark Eddy see page 53. Mark is a French Polisher, like me you have probably heard of French Polishing, but did you know that the process uses a substance called Shellac, which is produced from a resin secreted by the the female Lac bug? This was all news to me despite the fact that my grandfather had been a French Polisher. I find it fascinating to learn little gems like this, and in a similar vein, please see Dolphin’s article on page 11 which has some very helpful tips for making your computing experience just that little bit quicker, my favourite is Ctrl + Shift + Esc to immediately open the Task Manager, if your computer has programmes which freeze as frequently as they do on mine you will appreciate how useful this is. We have been out visiting another local restaurant this month, were we impressed? Find out on page 41. Please keep the articles coming in, remember if you are a member of any local group we can help you get new members at no cost, what have you got to lose by giving us a try? Keith - Editor

Aimee Harman Mosaic Mad Romans Since leaving Rottingdean in October 2014 and swapping teacups for tiles, I was approached by a book publishers, Searchpress Ltd ,they produce quality affordable craft books. They asked me to write a “how to “ book based on Mosaics , small do able projects for all ages. 20 projects with full instructions and beautiful photographs . The book came out in February 2015, and it features some mosaic projects for the home and garden. I attended a few shows to launch the book, and got asked by Create and Craft TV in Peterborough to appear as a guest presenter and demonstrate my techniques on an hour long live programme, which normally promotes card making ideas and projects, so this was something completely new to the channel . My first show was an amazing success, showing the mirror called out of the blue (right) and so I have been invited back and been on four shows so far. It looks like 2016 is going to be very busy for me as the channel want to show more mosaics, the company Hobby Island make the kits for me, they sell everything you need , from kits to tiles made from mother of pearl , I love their products and plan to work together producing new ideas for those who want to have a dabble in this addictive pastime. After 16 years I still hold the contract to restore and repair the mosaics on the Orient-Express , now called Belmond, and yes I still dress as Minerva the Roman Goddess and offer School visits mosaic making, and bring along Roman armour and weapons to give insight to how the Romans lived , a day the children never forget in a good way . contact me on 07872 057076 email : mosaicmadromans@btinternet.com

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 77

Short Cuts As both the mornings and the evenings are starting to get lighter, and the promise of spring is in the air, we can start getting out and about more again. So anything that can speed up the time spent at our computers will help. There are a whole world of computer shortcuts known to those who are IT literate, but you don’t need to be a computer whizz to use some of the more simple commands. Here are five things you could try today to see if they can lessen the time at your computer. ● Want to quickly lock down your screen? On a Windows machine, hit "Windows" plus "L". Try it the next time you are interrupted by the phone or the doorbell ringing. ● You know what it’s like - you were looking at something on your internet brower just a few minutes ago, but you closed the window and now you can’t recall where it was. If you want to get back a tab you recently closed, press "Control" (or "Command" on Mac), plus "Shift," plus "T," and, ta da! It will magically reappear.

● Instead of typing in www. and then .com into the address bar every time you search for a website directly, just type the name you are after into the address bar followed by pressing “control” + “enter”.* ● Forget your Ctrl Alt Del that involved two hands across your keyboard – to open the Task Manager directly with one hand, Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. To be fair, still a little tricky, but at least it’s all on one side. ● If you enjoy watching videos on You Tube here are two little shortcuts: To pause a video, press K. To skip 10 seconds back, press J and forward press L. We hope that this goes some way to helping you to cut down your time at your computers and get out and about into the fresh air again. *This is for .com only

Osteopathy tips

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Repetitive Strain Injury Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), a general term to describe aches and pains in muscles, nerves and tendons from overuse and repetitive movements. It commonly affects the upper body; neck and shoulders, arms, elbows, wrists, hands and fingers. Often affects people working at computers, on an assembly line or gardening, carpentry, playing a musical instrument. Symptoms: Pain, dull or sharp ache, tenderness, stiffness, throbbing, numbness or tingling, weakness, cramp. Initially symptoms may only occur when carrying out the repetitive action that causes them, though unless treated it may become constant over time even when resting. Causes: Repetitive activities, carrying out a high intensity activity for a long time without rest, doing an activity involving force, such as lifting or carrying heavy objects, using vibrating equipment, poor posture or working in awkward positions. Stress and working in a cold environment are contributing factors. Diagnosis: There is no specific test for RSI; your doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history and examine you. Other underlying medical conditions may need to be ruled out such as bursitis, carpel tunnel syndrome, Dupuytrens contracture, epicondylitis, ganglion cyst, rotator cuff syndrome, tendonitis, tenosynovitis, trigger finger, Raynaud’s phenomenon, writer’s cramp; an X-ray can test for osteoarthritis and blood tests to rule out inflammatory joint disease. Treatment: Short term use of anti-inflammatory pain medication (Ibuprofen) or pain receptor-blocking medication (some forms of anti-depressants) if symptoms are severe or interrupting sleep; cold packs, elastic supports, splints, physiotherapy, postural advice, stretching and strengthening exercises; steroid injections or surgery for specific conditions. Complementary therapies and relaxation techniques such as acupuncture, Alexander technique Pilates and yoga may be helpful though are not proven.

Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine affected joint and all surrounding tissues; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength and functionality. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests and determine the root cause. Examine the spine and assess nerve pathways to the affected joint. Treat to improve strength, functionality and movement and reduce tension, inflammation, pain and swelling. Specific taping or splinting may be required for stability and support. Postural and ergonomic advice as well as rehabilitation exercises. Treatment may include manipulation, deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, fascial techniques, dry needling, etc. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Prevention: Maintain good posture at work, playing music and other repetitive hobbies and tasks. Learn to sit at your computer correctly, making sure your seat, keyboard, mouse and screen cause you minimal strain. Take regular breaks from repetitive or long tasks, learn relaxation techniques if you are stressed, include a healthy form of exercise in your daily routine.

Local History - Part 46

Mike Laslett

Architect of the Lido: RWH Jones

Richard William Herbert Jones is most well known in this area for designing both the Lido and for the Ocean Hotel which both opened in 1938… R W H Jones also designed St Margaret’s Flats at The Ocean Hotel has been used to portray 1930’s Rottingdean. Today we value this attractive Art Deco grandeur in such TV programmes as Agatha Christie’s block but prior to its erection in 1938 there was ‘Poirot.’ In the episode “The Jewel Robbery at The understandably a huge public protest at a building of Grand Metropolitan” the Hotel became The Grand such a large scale being erected without consultation. As a result the forerunner of the Rottingdean Preservation Metropolitan, Morecambe, since that building was Society was formed, to protect the village against such under restoration at the time of filming. lack of consultation in future.

However Jones did not only design for the local estate company. He designed buildings as far afield as London and Wales. The most important of these was High Trees House in Nightingale Lane, SW12, part of which faces Clapham Common. It is now a popular block with an indoor swimming pool and a gym.

In 1937 R W H Jones designed the blocks of flats Curzon House, Marine View (below left) and Teynham House (below right) on the coast road in Saltdean between the Lido and Longridge Avenue.

Such London flats of the period were usually constructed of brick, with balconies and entrances rendered in a contrasting colour. In the case of Hightrees House, as it is known today, the whole of the ground floor is white, as are the balconies above the main entrance and on the projecting wings. The balconies are curved at each end and taper, becoming smaller the higher they are placed. The top floor is a 1960’s addition. High Trees House was the subject of a most famous legal case in 1946 when Lord Denning’s ruling established the principle of promissory estoppel. The doctrine of promissory estoppel prevents one party from withdrawing a promise made to a second party if the latter has reasonably relied on that promise. The doctrine of promissory estoppel was first developed in Hughes v. Metropolitan Railway Company in 1877 but was lost for some time until it was resurrected by Lord Denning in the High Trees House case.

Local Restaurant Review

41

Sea of Spice Rottingdean On a windy evening in early February we decided we would pay a visit to Sea of Spice, Rottingdean with a view to writing a review for this month’s magazine, this was what we found… First impressions of the restaurant are good, the owners go to the trouble of placing proper table clothes and napkins on the table, nothing made of paper here. We ordered papadums to start then a mild lamb curry, lamb saag and a chick pea/spinach side dish, all served with pilau rice. The restaurant was busy so we expected a bit of a wait, however by the time we had finished the papadums it was not long at all before the main course appeared. The food was well presented, hot, and plenty of it, the lamb saag was excellent but the sauce was on the oily side toward the bottom of the dish. My fellow diner enjoyed his lamb curry very much.

personal than when they take your money for the bill then disappear. We paid about £36 for two of us, expect this to be nearer £50 if you have a few drinks with your meal - we had water. It felt like good value and the service was very good through out. Scores: Food 9 out of 10 Service 10 out of 10 Would recommend Sea of Spice for a local night out.

The restaurant has a good selection of inexpensive deserts, however we decided to opt for a tea and a Calypso coffee - blended with Tia Maria and topped with cream - the drinks are very good value - £3.50 for a liqueur coffee, Just £1.40 for tea. When it was time to leave the waiter took the trouble to hold the door for us and say goodbye, so much more

Continuous Payment Authority A Continuous Payment Authority (CPA) is a type of regular, automatic payment that is set up using a debit or credit card. It may sometimes be referred to as a Recurring or Continuous Payment Transaction. Basically you give a business permission to regularly take payment from your debit or credit card whenever they think they’re owed money. Companies, such as payday loans online, DVD rental subscriptions, magazine subscriptions, commonly use this method.

If a different method ( e.g. standing order, direct debit or manual payments) is arranged you have control and security over how and when money is taken. Always ask whether the arrangement will be a CPA or not, and obtain confirmation in writing.

A CPA is intended for regular payments, not "one-off" payment. When signing up it may not be clear whether you have taken out a CPA, especially if arranged on the phone or on-line. A CPA is set up by giving credit or debit card details to the business to which you wish to make regular payment. Often there is no clear, written record that it is a CPA that has been set up.

Cancellation of a CPA can only be actioned by the company not by you. You should contact the business and your bank confirming in writing that you want to cancel the agreement. Be careful where a contract or credit agreement is in place as remaining payments may still need to be made. Read contract/agreement before cancelling.

People confuse the rights they have with a CPA to those accorded to a Direct Debit or a Standing Order. CPA is different from these because the payment instruction is with the business, not with a bank. This gives the business flexibility in taking money from your account. They can charge fixed or varying amounts, and don’t have to specify a date when they’re going to take a payment.

SO, BE AWARE! You may not realise that you have set up a CPA, where you will not necessarily have control over when money is taken from your account. www.saltdeanrottingdeanovingdeannhw.co.uk or contact Secretary Linda Hood 01273 306441; nhw.srosec@hotmail.co.uk

Local tradesman

Spotlight on Local Tradesman Mark Eddy - French Polisher. Mark Eddy is a French Polisher with some 38 years experience, coming from a fourth generation family business, established for over 100 years. Originally from Plymouth, in October 2015 I relocated to Brighton where my wife was born and raised and yearned to return. I now live in Saltdean, with my workshop at Chailey, and am very happy that I finally made the decision to do so, and am able to continue in the trade that I love. In Plymouth, we were called A A Eddy & Son. It meant a lot to me personally, to keep the name, and as my brother is continuing in Plymouth, I decided to add the ‘Southern’, making it A.A. Eddy & Son (Southern). Although my primary formal training and apprenticeship was in French Polishing, I have also trained, and am proficient in spray lacquering, working in both traditional and modern finishes. The kind of work this encompasses, can be anything from ‘touching up’ a scratch on a piece of furniture using traditional methods, to spray lacquering and changing the colour of a complete kitchen. It could also be antique furniture, complete restoration including repairs, or modern furniture, wooden beams, pianos, floors, doors and panelling. I also undertake re-upholstering of dining chairs and re-leathering of desktops. As well as in the home, I have worked on yachts, boats and classic car dashboard renovation.

Apart from working in the domestic field, commercially, I have undertaken contracts for various companies, including, Jury's Inn, Holiday Inn, Gleneagles Hotel (Scotland), The Connaught Hotel (London),The Admiralty (Plymouth), Chem-dry, McAleer and Rushe, Castlebrooks, Mowlem, Midas, InterServe, and Pendennis Shipyard to name but a few, as well as shop-fitting companies and letting agents. You can rest assured that you are in safe hands, providing a high quality, personal and friendly service, and being fully insured up to £2,000,000. Please feel free to contact me with any queries, or advice if required. I am able to collect and deliver, and provide free estimates in the local area.

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your

neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions

Lions Update This month we have exciting news on our confirmed charity concert with Juliette and the Romeos at the Rottingdean Village Hall on 30 April. And we have an update on our next Murder Mystery. Also, we have news of the new holders of the Lions Sponsored Swim Challenge Shield. Charity Concert with Juliette and the Romeos, Rottingdean Village Hall, 30 April 2016 We are pleased to announce, for one night only, a charity concert with Juliette and the Romeos at the Rottingdean Village Hall on 30 April. This popular group plays the likes of Motown and Stax along with R & B - they are consequently a very lively function band. The rhythmic saxophone is put to good use. Well known in the area, they are making a very welcome return to Rottingdean. There will be a licensed bar and the doors open at 7:30pm. Tickets are £10. Please ring 07526 907 102 if you would like to buy a ticket. Tickets are also available at Dallinger Shoes, Saltdean; David Webb Residential, Rottingdean; and Java Café, Woodingdean. Space is limited so please make contact as soon as you can. Tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis. All proceeds will go to local charities and/or community projects. It should be a special evening - I look forward to seeing you there. Lions Sponsored Swim Challenge Shield awarded to St Margaret’s School Each year the team that raises the most monies while swimming at our sponsored swim held at Roedean School pool is awarded the Sponsored Swim Challenge Shield. Last year a group of luvvies called the Sackville Swans won. They didn’t give up without fight this year, raising more money than last time but they were still pipped to the post by St Margaret's School. Lion President Alistair Lang and Lion Ian Christie, the organiser of the sponsored swim, proudly presented the shield to the team from Year 5 with their delighted Head in attendance. Well done to the new holders of the trophy and to all that took part – you are all winners. As a result of last year’s swim we shall be donating £1000 to Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice. We are already looking forward to the next sponsored swim on Sunday 16 October at Roedean School – see you there.

Lions Certificate of Appreciation presentation to Jim Farr and Downs Hotel Over the years, Jim Farr and his team at the Downs Hotel in Woodingdean have provided a central hub for some of our most successful fundraising activities, especially recently as a base for our crossroads collection each December. As a big thank you, 2nd Vice President Lion Ian Christie and crew recently presented a Lions Certificate of Appreciation to Jim Farr’s team. Afterwards, we all enjoyed some good old British pub grub. Many thanks to Jim and his team – long may our productive association continue.

Downs Hotel Presentation

During 2016 we have some exciting fundraising events planned – some old some new – as we mentioned last month. An update is provided below: Murder Mystery with The Dead Funny Company We are hoping that the welcome return of The Dead Funny Company, will take place in October. This time there will be a different play with a new set of clues to solve. As before, there will be an evening meal with the action taking place between courses. The stage will be set for another fun evening of mystery, murder and mayhem. I hope you will be able to come. For progress and final details of the above fundraising activity, please watch this space. If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk.

Film Review from Cinema Saltdean

The Lady in the Van: a very English comedy The postman walks across your lawn: you may feel affronted. A car parked in your usual parking place, outside your house, could send us into a bit of a paddy… Imagine then someone parking their tatty van in your drive, using your electricity, without paying a penny, and staying there for fifteen years. This is largely the plot of ‘The Lady in the Van’. The situation, you will not be surprised to hear, forms the basis of a witty and quintessentially English comedy. You may be more surprised to hear that it is a true story. The drive on which the van is parked belonged to screenplay writer, novelist and performer, and national treasure, Alan Bennett (‘Talking Heads’ ‘Beyond the Fringe’). ‘The Lady’ of the title, in real life, was one Miss Shepherd, played here by another national treasure, Maggie Smith (‘Marigold Hotel’ ‘My Old Lady’). The real life Miss Shepherd was by no means a meek or mild character but a somewhat abrasive, spirited and assertive tartar of a woman, not afraid to be severe on those who helped her. Ms Smith thrives on the character, bringing a brilliant sense of comic timing. Alan Bennett is played by Alex Jennings, who has all of the characteristics of the original. To know Alan Bennett is to understand how his muddled sense of decency and meekness prevented him from saying ‘no’ to Miss Shepherd. Equally though, his sensibilities were intact enough for him to refute being Miss Shepherd’s carer, even in the face of periodic visits from Social Services – a very funny exchange in the film. Alan Bennett is a master of characterisation and a keen observer of the human condition. In a recent BFI press conference he was singularly unsentimental about Miss Shepherd, pointing out that he had had her van moved from his drive, where it was in his line of sight, to his back garden, so that ‘he didn’t have to see her all the time’. We also know that he had the van moved to protect Miss Shepherd from undesirables passing by in the street. Bennett insists that the fifteen-year relationship was “less about compassion and more about the

opposite of compassion”: be our guest to judge this for yourself. It is rumoured that Alan Bennett saw the situation as a rich seam of material for future work: Bennett denies this. No matter, the result is pure joy; funny and very English. We are often seen as an island of eccentrics and this film does nothing to scupper this reputation. Filmed on the very drive in Gloucester Crescent, Camden, where Bennett lived, this story could only have happened in England. Truth, they say, is stranger than fiction: in this case truth is just plain funny. Next month, look out for the highly-acclaimed ‘Suffragette’, Tuesday 26 April. NB Cinema Saltdean is looking for volunteers: please let us know if you can help.

Ian Stewart - Local Author Local Author and Saltdean resident Ian Stewart talks about two books he has written … As a deaf resident of Saltdean since my move from London in 1992, I have written two books which reflect my early days of deaf education in the 1940-mid1950s and my involvement with deaf theatre in the 1960mid1970s. The first book size 25.5cm x 17.5cm with 245 pages, self-published in the USA in 2009, describes the life and work of Miss Mary S. Corbishley MBE, the founder of Mill Hall Oral School for the Deaf in Cuckfield, Sussex and how she was inspired by her love of God to fight against ignorance, scepticism and officialdom of the hearing world for the oral education of deaf children in the 1930-1950s and finally winning the recognition of every deaf child’s equal right to higher education. For her tireless unstinting service she was awarded an MBE. I was fortunate to have been one of her pupils who were encouraged to face the hearing world with confidence and independence. Miss Corbishley wrote in 1980: “Teaching the deaf, founded upon the Bible, was a time of opening minds, eyes and hearts… Higher education is now possible… May this endeavour continue and bless all concerned.”

the British Theatre of the Deaf, I would say that it not only gives deaf people the opportunity to express themselves and to meet people, but also gives them the dignity of being wanted for something they can offer.” It has been my delight and pride to have taken part in these two historical happenings alongside a few other survivors with whom I share the privilege. The second book size 30cm x 21cm with 235 pages, printed in Somerset in 2015, describes, historically, a long and difficult road from its small beginnings to a great demonstration and achievement of a beautiful, visually powerful and strong professional Performing Art not to be forgotten by those who saw the work and performances by deaf actors and actresses in London and on tours around the country and abroad, and by the deaf people who would feel proud of their unique theatrical heritage. Pat Keysell, the well-known presenter of the BBC’s Vision On in the 1960s and director of the British Theatre of Deaf said in 1972: “If I were asked to sum up The British Theatre of the deaf
