Welcome to the March Edition… This month’s cover picture by Colette Langton dramatically captures what we have all seen so much of over the past couple of months, let us hope that March brings drier, calmer weather, especially so that the poor people affected by flooding can start to rebuild their lives and homes.

“Beacon Hub Brighton would like to apologise for mistakes printed in the article about it in last month's issue. Essentially, Libby Darling is Vice Chair of the Friends of Beacon Hill, not Chair. She is also the Director of Beacon Hub Brighton, which is a CIC (Community Interest Company), which though supported by Friends of Beacon Hill, is not one of its projects.”

Once again thank you to all this month’s contributors, of special mention this month is Cricketer’s Any Questions on page 17, in aid of St Margaret’s Church Rottingdean, please do support this very worthy cause even if you can’t make it to the event itself. Keith - Editor

Festival
Calling ALL Artists! There is no doubt that The Deans area is a beautiful place for we artists to live, but it seems such a shame that we still no longer have an art trail for the May Festival Artists Open Houses. Anyone prepared to change this for next year? With advertising already underway, The Grange Art Gallery is again exhibiting this May as an Independent Venue. As art gallery organiser, I have easily filled this year's event again with talented art and craft makers. This time I have teamed up with Aimee Harman of the Open Art cafe to showcase mosaic artists, both in her lovely gallery space and also in The Grange gardens. But there is room for more! So if you make mosaic (or carve in wood, or sculpt in metal or clay and your work is weather-proof ) then please contact either of us to take part. Please note though that The Grange Gallery is now filled.
Finally, I am looking for professional artists who are passionate about theatre to exhibit with me in Dec AOH. Oh and students are more than welcome to join my Friday art classes and Monday afternoon Life Drawing sessions at The Whiteway Centre Rottingdean. Wishing you all a Happy Creative Year! Amanda Davidson P.S bookings for The Grange art gallery 2015 are now open! Contact: amandasdavidson@gmail.com
Focusing now on July, I am looking for artists to be "Inspired by Kipling " As part of a new and exciting Kipling Festival weekend, to be held from 10th July I am organising a 2week exhibition in The Grange art gallery (and gardens). So I am looking for artists, craft-makers and writers ( and musicians?) to fill this space. The theme is in the title. There will be a small fee to meet costs and advertising. All age groups welcome.

What should you do if your email gets hacked? The first time you are aware that your email account has been hacked is when a friend calls to see if you really are stranded in Bulgaria and need help getting back to the UK. Or they ask whether you’ve come out of retirement/changed careers and are now proudly selling less than reputable pharmaceuticals. 5 Preliminary Steps To Take If Your Email Account Has Been Hacked. 1: Do not ignore it and hope it will go away. There may still be the (very rare) hacker who is just mucking about, but it is far more likely that if your account has been compromised all of your email contacts are also at risk. 2: Try and change your password. Now this may not be possible depending on how badly you have been caught out, but it is your first line of defence. And should you have the same password for other sites (tut tut if you do), all of these will need changing as well. 3: Inform your email provider – the chances are that you won’t be the first, nor the last person who has been hacked and they should be able to provide information and assistance.
4: Tell your contacts. Yes, even if you haven’t emailed Aunty Ethel in Australia for a very long time, you need to let everybody know that you have been compromised and no, they shouldn’t click on the link “you” sent them. 5: Run a scan. If you have a decent antivirus installed on your computer then run a scan. Unfortunately, not all online protection software is the same, and even if you have some form of basic protection, malware, spyware and Trojans can not only slip past but can also lie undetected. If you have any worries or concerns that your emails have been accessed maliciously then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Financial Advice with Mark Holmes
Make the right ISA choice. Mark Holmes
Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) remain an important building block in helping create capital and income for the future and since their launch in 1999, the popular personal finance vehicle has gone some way to address the shortcomings in the UK’s savings culture. NIA Dance feature

Dancing is Important Moving your body to music is one of the greatest healers of stress, anxiety and hard-heartedness. We are not naturally in states that bring discomfort mentally, physically and emotionally. Helena Dodds
“Life is tough” has become a reality for the majority of people. “Going it alone” – feeling isolated - is an unpleasant fact for many people. Loving support and encouragement doesn't always appear when it’s needed. The pressures of daily life often leave you depleted at the end of each day. This state has become acceptable. Where do you top up with energy and happiness? That’s what I’m here to tell you! DANCE. The beauty and benefits of dance come from filling your mind with music you enjoy and from releasing tension in your body by moving rhythmically with ease. There are many forms of dance available and it’s a matter of finding one that is convenient, appealing, affordable and comfortable. I’m a teacher of a dance form called NIA. I came to it when I was in my sixties. I wasn’t a competent dancer yet I could do it easily. The variety of music and the varied tempo gave me pleasure and confidence. I never felt the threat of not knowing the steps and yet there was a comfortable challenge to do it well. Everyone in the class was enjoying themselves enough not to be concerned with how I was doing! After only a couple of classes I experienced this enjoyment myself. NIA was developed in the 1980s in America by a tennis pro (man) and an aerobics teacher (woman). Both felt that their bodies
needed greater variety of movement and that the body would benefit from moving in a way that explored and expanded natural movement. That is why NIA is called “The body’s way”. NIA soon became (and remains) one of the top ten fitness industries in America. Another condition that drew me to NIA is that it caters to all ages, levels of fitness and body types. In one class there can be beginners, teenagers and seniors. Each person dances at their own level of competence and fitness with the given lead of the teacher. As students continue classes, competence and freedom develop, increasing the enjoyment of the dance. Principle No1 of NIA is, “The Joy of Movement”. Classes are for men and women. There is a good balance of assertiveness and creativity in NIA Let 2014 be the year in which you give back to yourself. Let NIA be your doorway to dance. Classes are currently held weekly in Rottingdean. Perhaps you’d like a class where you are. The cost is £6 per class or £5 per class when you buy 5 classes in advance. (And don’t let that stop you coming) If all else fails, just put on the music and dance!! Helena Dodds: 01273 583299 or 077073616 Email: helenadodds@yahoo.co.uk.

Local History - Part 24

St Margaret’s Church Rottingdean
At the site of the current Parish Church in Rottingdean there is little to be found of the original Saxon building. The church we see is of Norman origins with a tower that was rebuilt in 1200 AD.
St Margaret’s Church
Stained glass window
In 1377 pirates heading for Lewes plundered the village. Some villagers took refuge in the church belfry but the pirates set fire to the church and the villagers perished. Some fire damage can still be observed today. Rebuilt after the fire, the church remained relatively unchanged until a major church restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Like many such restorations it secured the future of a poorly maintained building which we might otherwise have lost. However many features such as the original roof beams in the nave were lost. Fortunately, the chancel beams charred by the 1377 fire remain.

Recessional, after the most famous poem which Kipling wrote at Rottingdean. They have also built two other replicas: The Little Church of the Flowers, which is modelled on Stoke Poges church, where poet Thomas Gray penned his "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" and The Wee Kirk o' the Heather, which is a copy of Annie Laurie's village church in Glencairn, Scotland.
Some stained glass windows in the church are the work of Sir Edward Burne-Jones who lived for a time at North End House, opposite the church. The three- light window behind the altar was given by him as a gift to mark the marriage of his daughter Margaret at St Margaret’s Church. She herself donated the window of Saint Margaret in the North Chancel. One of the most striking memorials inside the church is that to The Rev Dr Thomas Hooker. His other roles in village life also included being a schoolmaster at the Grange when it was The Vicarage and being actively involved in smuggling. The churchyard has been added to by numerous acquisitions of land. For a guide to some of the more famous people in the churchyard see the March 2013 copy of The Deans magazine or e- mail me for a copy. The Americans were keen to buy the picturesque church in Rottingdean, dismantle it stone by stone and ship it across the Atlantic. Understandably, Rottingdean did not wish to part with it. Undeterred, the owners of Fair Lawn Memorial Park at Glendale, California, built a reasonable replica. They named it The Church of the

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Selenium Selenium is an essential trace mineral, needed in small amounts in the body. The level of selenium in plant foods depends on the soil it is grown in and varies greatly in different parts of the world. Most areas of UK, Finland, New Zealand and parts of China are low in selenium. UK used to import wheat from selenium rich Canada. In recent years European wheat is being used and average daily selenium intake has dropped to below the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA).
Signs and Symptoms of Deficiency: Deficiency is tested by measuring activity of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which helps protect against oxidative damage. · Age spots · Cancerous changes · Cataracts · Heart Disease · Infections · Impaired growth · Inflamed muscles · Pale fingernail beds · Pancreatic insufficiency · Reduced ability to detoxify · Reduced fertility · Susceptibility to viral infections Low selenium can be a factor in: · Anaemia: in association with low serum retinol (vitamin A) · Depression: selenium is important for brain function · HIV is thought to be more likely to develop into AIDS when selenium is low Free Radicals, Oxidative Damage, Anti-Oxidants Free radicals are derived from normal metabolic processes in the body and from external sources such as X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals. They are highly reactive and can damage DNA, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids causing cell damage and homeostatic disruption, including suppressing the immune system. They are controlled in the body by anti-oxidants, selenium being one which has an impact on: · Alzheimer's disease: reduced cognitive abilities · Epilepsy: low levels of selenium can be a factor in development of epilepsy
Health Risks from Excessive Selenium · Early indicators of excess intake are a garlic odor of the breath and a metallic taste in the mouth · Hair and nail loss or brittleness · Lesions of skin and nervous system, nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, mottled teeth, fatigue, irritability · Acute selenium toxicity can cause severe gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms, acute respiratory distress syndrome, myocardial infarction, hair loss, muscle tenderness, tremors, lightheadedness, facial flushing, kidney failure, cardiac failure, and, in rare cases, death. Adding Selenium to your diet (RDA is 55mcg) · Brazil nuts: 3oz (20-24 nuts) 1632mcg, 1 nut approx 77mcg · Fish and Shellfish: 3oz tuna 92mcg, halibut 45mcg, shrimp 40mcg · Meat and Offal (depending on the selenium levels in their feed): 3oz ham 42mcg, beef 33mcg, turkey 31mcg, chicken 22 mcg · Cereals (except Western Europe and New Zealand): 1cup rice 19mcg, oatmeal 13mcg, slice of whole wheat bread 13mcg We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Neighbourhood Watch
Are you Savvy online? Perhaps not as streetwise online as you would like to be or think you are? More and more of the communications that come to NHW are sent electronically and the fastest way to disseminate this information is by the use of technology. So over the last few years Neighbourhood Watch as well as trying to keep the Deans a safe and secure place to live, has had to engage technology and in doing this recognise and advise members of the many scams and problems it can cause. Only this year we have heard of four NHW members whose PC's have been hacked and we are sure there will be many more. The National Fraud Agency is launching a new campaign Cyber Streetwise, to help give us all some essential tips to improve our performance online and help keep important stuff safe. You can read more about the campaign at www.cyberstreetwise.com. We are supporting the campaign to help get us all to be a bit more streetwise online. Believe it or not most of the population are not doing enough to protect themselves Adopting a few simple online behaviours can help keep
you and your family safer, such as: 1. Using strong, memorable passwords. 2. Installing anti-virus software on new devices. 3. Checking privacy settings on social media. 4. Shopping safely online – always ensuring to check online retail sites are secure. 5. Downloading software and the application of patches when prompted. PSA Testing
53
Problems with the Prostate, and the PSA test 1 in every 2 men will have a health problem with their prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an infection, enlargement or cancer. 1 in every 8 men will develop prostate cancer and those of African-Caribbean origin and those with a family history of the disease are 2 to 3 times more at risk. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate, entering the blood. It is not a direct test for cancer, a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Some leading clinicians believe all men over 50 should know their PSA and have regular yearly tests. Swedish researchers say PSA testing every man aged 45 – 49 would predict nearly half of all prostate cancer deaths. Without screening, around 42,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. It is now the leading cancer found in men. Almost 11,000 men die of this disease annually, one every 48 minutes. Caught in the early stages, cure rates are dramatically improved with over 80% success. General symptoms of problems with the prostate are frequent need to urinate especially at night; bursting to urinate, slow flow, difficult, painful; stop/start and dribbling, or blood in the urine. FREE PSA testing is happening in Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex, the three counties covered by the charity PCaSO (Prostate Cancer Support Organisation). We believe overwhelmingly in giving men
the right to decision making about their own health choices. We are continuing with our commitment to a PSA testing programme and have tested over 1000 men across our region in 2013. Despite a persistent reluctance by the NHS and other Health Authorities to support free PSA testing for all men in the appropriate age range, PCaSO will continue to offer this service throughout 2014. We are now planning an all-day free test event at: Woodingdean Community Centre, Warren Road on Saturday 22nd March The testing will be conducted by trained personnel and nurses using the latest Mediwatch Bioscan equipment requiring only a finger prick (not hypodermic needle) with the advantage of giving results within 10 minutes. These tests have been carried out throughout the country by not only PCaSO but other support organisations in Reading, Warwick, Manchester, Rugby, Leamington…. It is essential to BOOK AN APPOINTMENT TIME by phoning 01903 775783 don’t delay.
