Welcome
Welcome to the March Edition In one of my more unusual introductions I’d like to start this month by announcing that I’m going through the legal process of changing my first name, I’ve never got on with it and even gave my mother a hard time about it when I was a kid, so this month I’m signing off with my new name ‘Sam’, I imagine this will cause confusion for some time to come but please bear with me! Our cover picture this month is quite unusual in that Colette has chosen to make it black and white to show the contrast between the dark lines of the roof tops and the snow. The view is of East Saltdean seen from the Tye.

Keep Your Phone Safe Whilst most of us are aware of the importance of having some form of protection on our computers, the same cannot be said of our smart phones. Phones often contain sensitive, personal information, so keeping them secure is as important as keeping your computer secure. 3 Tips To Keep Your Smart Phone Safe Use a PIN/keylock code Whilst almost half of smart phone owners have lost or had a mobile phone stolen, 67% don’t use passwords. If you don’t and your phone is lost, stolen or left unattended, anyone that picks it up will have unrestricted access. This could involve data being stolen, phone calls being made, or unwanted services being registered for, and could result in considerable financial cost. Back up your data We have a lot of images stored on our phones – and often important documents, contacts, messages, appointments and other information. If you have no
backup system in place on your phone some items may be lost forever. Most modern phones now allow users to synchronise information with a computer or website for backup purposes. This can include e-mails and contacts with Microsoft Outlook, photos uploaded to online storage or software supplied by the phone manufacturer to simply backup key data in the event of loss. Security software Good anti-virus security software can provide malware, spam and firewall protection and help you control your phone from afar, and if it has GPS capabilities show you the location of a device if it is lost or stolen. Furthermore, it’s possible to lock a device remotely, requiring password access on the handset or a specific unlock request to enable it, and it’s even possible to erase sensitive data remotely if you’re sure it has found its way into the wrong hands. If you have these three security procedures in place your phone, and your personal information, will be more secure.

Clifden House News
11
A Difficult Journey and Key Advice In 2015, Alison Lowden, 71, was diagnosed with a rare form of dementia, Posterior Cortical Atropy (PCA). Her husband, Barry, describes the journey and the effect this has had on him.
Nial Joyce of Clifden House said: “It is never easy making the decision for a loved one to go into care. There are very often mixed feelings of guilt and relief, worry and peace.”
Barry first really noticed a change in Alison when she started to use the wrong words. Some time before this Barry had noticed a change in Alison’s gait. This developed into a stoop as time progressed. Research confirms that changes in gait may be early signs of mental impairments.
Barry said: “I take comfort in knowing that Alison is getting the best devoted care she needs in a safe and comfortable environment. While I consider myself to be in ‘pre-death bereavement’, I have come to accept things as they are and to value the time we have left. It has also allowed me to regain my health.”
In 2014 Barry spoke to Alison’s doctor about his concerns. Sometime later Alison was referred to a specialist assessment centre where a scan confirmed the devastating diagnosis that Alison had Alzheimer’s.
Clifden House Dementia Care Centre’s advice for those in similar situations: ● If you have a concern then follow your instincts. Go to your GP. ● Push for a specialist assessment if you are still concerned – a diagnosis of dementia is not what anyone wants – but if you get it early enough you can at least put some plans and strategies in place in good time. ● Sort out a Lasting Power of Attorney ● Put in place a support system for yourself too. Dealing with someone with dementia is exhausting – physically and mentally. ● Visit and assess specialist dementia care homes. Don’t fall into the trap of being impressed by the plush décor - monitor and chat to the staff, look at the care they provide and their interaction with those in their care. This is far, far more important than any soft furnishings or landscaped gardens.
“This is when our lives changed,” said Barry. Early in her career, Alison was a professional musician and taught at a local school. This is where she met Barry and they married in 1970. When the disease first manifested itself, Barry felt as though his concerns for Alison were not being heard. He found it a struggle to get the tests and support that were needed to help cope with this traumatic change in their lives. His main issue was that there was no clear process or advice available. For several months, Barry cared for Alison but her condition deteriorated. It became increasingly difficult for Barry to cope both physically and mentally. In 2015, due to stress and anxiety Barry collapsed and was hospitalised. This was the ultimate turning point and resulted in Alison going into emergency respite care. Barry said: “I knew emergency care was not the best option, so I investigated other care providers. I had reached a point when professional care and support was essential. “When I walked into Clifden House Dementia Care Centre in Seaford, I had a really good feeling. For the first time in a long time, I had a sense of calm. I knew Alison would be happy here.”

Osteopathy tips
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Osteopathy During Pregnancy Pregnancy and particularly the birthing of a new person into being, is a life changing experience for both parents. Although it is a natural process and part of a normal life cycle, each pregnancy is a unique experience. The mother’s body experiences a myriad of physical, chemical, hormonal and emotional changes. The growing baby inside the uterus, requires that the mother’s body makes space and that her posture adapts. Each woman responds differently, depending on her previous history. Past pregnancies and accidents may have affected the mechanical workings of the spine, pelvis and coccyx, whilst illnesses may have a bearing on the tissue state of the body. These factors, plus the natural loosening of the ligaments in preparation for birth, may lead to aches, pains and fatigue. How Osteopathy can help: ● To ease some of the discomforts of pregnancy. ● To help with optimal foetal positioning. ● To help prepare the mother’s body for the demands of labour. Discomforts of Pregnancy - First Trimester: Nausea and Vomiting (morning sickness): Osteopathy may help to release the debilitating physical strains caused by vomiting, restoring musculoskeletal harmony and balance. Helping the body to improve circulation to and from the liver may help reduce nausea. Discomforts of Pregnancy – Second Trimester: This is generally potentially the least troublesome trimester, though some of the third trimester issues may arise. Aches and Pains: These can occur as the body changes shape to accommodate the increasing size and weight of the uterus, involving considerable postural changes. Pre-existing back problems or strains from past accidents or trauma can make it more difficult to accommodate these changes, resulting in discomfort. Hormones encourage the ligaments to soften during pregnancy in preparation for the birth, when the bones of the pelvis separate slightly during delivery to facilitate passage of the baby’s head through the pelvis. This softening happens throughout the whole body, making it more vulnerable to strain during pregnancy. Poor Posture: This can be a cause of headache, backache, neckache, aching legs and undue fatigue during pregnancy. Osteopathy can be helpful in assisting the body to make postural changes, making the pregnancy more comfortable. Discomforts of Pregnancy – Third Trimester: Heartburn (indigestion): The expansion of the uterus can put pressure on the diaphragm, contributing to heartburn. Osteopathy can help to
encourage a sense of space around between the structures to reduce this tension and may relieve the heartburn. Breathing Difficulties: Postural changes through the lower ribs and spine can affect the action of the diaphragm, making breathing more challenging. Osteopathy to improve function of the whole ribcage may help to increase available lung capacity. Varicose Veins and Haemorrhoids: These can be caused or aggravated by increased tension in the pelvis or diaphragm area affecting the return of venous blood to the heart from the lower half of the body. Osteopathy to relieve tension in the pelvis and diaphragm may be helpful. Birth Preparation: Optimal Foetal Positioning: As the birth approaches, with reducing space to move around, the baby needs to be in the optimum position for delivery, ideally head down and facing backwards. Any past trauma to the pelvis, sacrum or coccyx may distort the birth canal potentially affecting the baby’s decent, so it is helpful to release these strains. Structural Balance: Ensure that the pelvis is structurally balanced to enable passage of baby down the birth canal. Osteopathy can help release past strains within the pelvic bones, muscles and ligaments, aiming for better chance of the bones being able to separate during delivery. Exercises: (best learnt under guided instruction) ● Spend time on all 4s with a straight back to encourage optimal foetal positioning and relieve low back ● Warrior yoga pose to help release iliopsoas muscle; to relieve low back and enable descent in second stage ● Frog yoga pose to gently prepare for opening the pelvis ● Keep active, walk tall, avoid slouching on the couch ● If low back is over-arching, bring the weight slightly toward the heels to help encourage straightening the low back We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Friends of Beacon Hill & Beacon Hub
Beacon Hill Nature Reserve Our regular readers will no doubt be bored to tears of me (b)rambling on about scrub bashing so you will be pleased to hear that the season has come to an end and we are now venturing into the woods. The scrub bash this season was a prickly success and we have cleared more ‘acreage’ than ever before. Hopefully this will mean that next season the regrowth will be less and we will be able to move bravely forward where no scrub basher has gone before. We recently had the honour of being asked by The 4 Deans Stroke Club, based in Woodingdean, to go and give them a talk about Friends of Beacon Hill and what we actually do up there. We had a great time with them and gamely fielded the questions that they fired at us. One of the ladies was previously a member of the Land Army and lots of the other members had lived in the area for many a year so it was a very enjoyable day for us all, exchanging stories. We were very grateful to also receive a donation from the raffles that they run during their meetings. Thank you and the money will be put to good use. The sheep are due to arrive during March for a 3 month burst to see if they can nibble away any of the bramble and ragwort shoots that should be nice and juicy, tempting our woolly friends to chomp down. There will only be a small smattering of sheep to ensure that the ground nesting skylarks aren’t disturbed. 4 new gates have been erected at the entrances to the Nature Reserve by a BHCC contractor, securing the hill and hopefully ensuring any rampant children, dogs or sheep can’t run out onto the road.
We’ll be maintaining the pathways and steps in North Wood during the Spring along with a spot of ivy ringing and general tidying up. Please feel free to come along and join us, even it it’s just to say hello and take a look at our progress. We meet 2ⁿ Wednesday and 4 Friday of each month at 10AM at the Beacon Hub Cafe Kiosk. Tools are provided but please wear sturdy shoes/boots/gloves and if you have secateurs bring them along. Don’t Lose your Bottle!
Drinking water from a bottle is considered to be a recent fashion. However, the habit began at least two hundred years ago, when the quality of drinking water was very poor, if not lethal!
The earliest popular bottles were known as Hamilton’s after William Hamilton claimed a patent in 1814. It was torpedo shaped and could not be stood up, which kept the cork moist and the bottle airtight. Despite Hamilton’s claims the idea was probably first introduced by a partner of Schweppes in Germany as early as 1790.
Mineral water, ale and ginger beer were popular substitutes for drinking water. It has been possible to recover a wide variety of such bottles from digging at town rubbish tips. Sadly, Brighton had the habit of sending its rubbish to Black Rock and tipping it over the cliff into the sea until Sheepcote Valley opened in 1916. Therefore, most of our fine local examples have been lost forever.
Codd Bottle
Hamilton Bottle
See us online at www.deansmagazine.co.uk
Codd bottles were also named after their inventor, Hiram Codd. These had an ingenious device where the glass marble stopper would seal the bottle but roll into lugs in the neck when in use. The example here is marked 1916 on the base, so must have just missed being dumped at sea!
41
Dumpy Bottle (Royal German Spa)
There were many other types of bottles, the novelty dumpy bottle shown is from The Royal German Spa at Queens Park. Unlike St Anne’s Well, which was a natural chalybeate spring in a remote area of Hove, Dr. Struve set up a spa where he could artificially replicate the chemical formulae of many famous spa waters worldwide. At the height of its popularity in 1850 more than a hundred carriages queued daily down to the seafront for a visit to the spa.
Fries were the largest Mineral Water Company in Sussex with huge premises in Middle Street opposite the Hippodrome from 1874. In 1961 they were taken over by Schweppes. The second largest was Shelvey’s based originally at 20 ½ German Place. During the First World War this was renamed Madeira Place for obvious reasons. Therefore, this bottle bearing the German Place address is very rare. Also note the pun on the name Shelvey……an Ammonite Shell encircled by the letters VEY (shell – vee). The Ammonite design was familiar to central Brighton residents as it was used at the top of capitals by Amon Henry Wilds, who in turn we believe used it as a pun on HIS name. He had built a substantial home in Lewes High Street for Dr Gideon Mantell, who was considered the father of modern palaeontology after discovering the bones of an iguanodon at Whiteman’s Green, near Cuckfield. He could have well shown fossil specimens to Mr Wilds.
Schilling’s Ginger Beer Bottle
We do know from records that Brighton had 19 mineral water factories in 1880 so there were many rival firms, each designing their own distinctive bottles. Also from a factory located in Middle Street, this rare Schilling’s ginger beer bottle has a fine portrait of Brighton Pavilion. You will notice that the fashion moved from the glass mineral water bottles to stoneware bottles for ginger beer. This was not because ginger beer was more volatile but because it contained sediments that would have appeared very unpleasant if viewed in a glass bottle! Shelvey Ginger Beer Bottle
All bottles illustrated are from the author’s collection.

Neighbourhood Watch
Parking When speaking to members and residents at summer fairs and meetings many of the biggest complaints and worries that are continually brought to our notice are inconsiderate parking and speeding. As you would have seen in our February Deans Magazine article NHW are trying to address the problem of speeding by carrying out Community Speed Watch in East & West Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean. (note volunteers are still needed!). Parking continues to be a problem especially around the shopping areas in Longridge Avenue and Lustrells Vale. Inconsiderate parking is reported to us in all areas of our three villages. At a recent Local Action Team meeting (LAT) Paul Nicholls, Parking Strategy and Contracts Manager from Brighton & Hove Council attended. See below his report that he kindly sent to us which we hope will be of interest. Reporting Parking Problems Parking problems can be reported by calling 0345 603 5469 and selecting option 2 or problems can be reported on the council’s website. NSL, the council parking enforcement contractor, aim to attend within one hour between the hours of 8am to 8pm.
For reporting on the website firstly go to “ www.brightonhove.gov.uk “ (you can also find this page by searching for “Brighton and Hove city council” in google or other web browser) then select “Parking and Travel“, then “Parking“ , then “Report a parking problem“. Using the website to report parking problems is best when a response is not required within an hour. On the website reporting from the “other details” box is expandable so more times, locations, vehicles and extra information can be added if required. Reporting this way allows NSL to plan enforcement patrols when they are most needed. White line road marking for driveways The cost for the installation is £12 per metre of white line (rounded up to the next metre). To apply please visit the website , firstly go to “ www.brighton-hove.gov.uk “ then select “ Parking and Travel” then “Roads and Highways” then “White line road marking for driveways” If you require more information please call 01273 292387 or email parking.infrastructure@brighton-hove.gov.uk For more information about Neighbourhood Watch please contact Secretary Linda Hood 01273 306441 or email nhw.srosec@hotmail.co.uk Website: saltdeanrottingdeanovingdeannhw.co.uk

Local News
Save Our Deans Review 2017 was another busy year for the Deans Preservation Group (Save Our Deans) as we continue our fight to prevent development on Meadow Vale. It is gratifying to know how strong and unwavering the feeling against development is within the local community. The DPG committee continues to meet regularly to discuss the issues and agree plans of action as well as grappling with the ever present need for funds. We are supported by ORPS, the Longhill Woodland Group, CPRE, RPC and many other local and ecology groups. The year started with the planning application pending for 45 houses on the western part of the field. In March the developers submitted a revised application with a different layout for 45 dwellings. This required further objection letters from everyone and further documents submitted by DPG and our ecology consultants. The application was heard by Brighton and Hove Planning Committee in May. A large crowd gathered outside the council offices to protest against the development. Thank you for your support if you were there. During the meeting a member of Rottingdean Parish Council, our local city councillor, and our ecology consultant spoke against the development and after a three hour debate the committee decided to refuse the application on ecology, traffic and landscape grounds. This was cause for celebration, but we knew it was not the end of the story. In an Evening Argus article the developers had threatened to appeal the decision if the planning committee refused their application and true to their word, in August their appeal documents were published. Again DPG sprang into action preparing our own statement of case documents and commissioning our ecologist to review their flawed ecology statement. And again many residents sent in further letters of objection. In August DPG took a stall at Rottingdean Fair to publicise our campaign. We sold cakes and flower arrangements made by members
of DPG to raise funds and many new people signed up to our supporters email list. At the end of September we held a very successful curry and quiz night in Ovingdean Village Hall which also boosted our funds. We now await the planning appeal inquiry which will be in April. Rest assured we will back up the council’s refusal of the application as strongly as we can. The facts are on our side. Our aim is always to fight the battle in front of us and so far it has paid off. Who would have thought four years ago that local residents would be so successful against the might of the developer? The Deans residents have been a crucial part of the fight to protect this beautiful field. A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS If you would like to donate towards the cost of the specialist consultants we will need to employ for the inquiry please contact us or transfer funds directly to: A/c name DEANS PRESERVATION GROUP Sort code 30 94 63 A/c number 23429760

Cinema Saltdean Film Review
Victoria and Abdul Queen Victoria, Queen of England, Empress of India – formidable. She was mother to nine children and someone not to be trifled with: a woman who knew what she wanted. But, wait - there’s another side to this impressive ruler. Beneath the public persona it would seem lies a rather melancholic, sensitive, if not sentimental, character: less worldly than may be imagined and fascinated by matters outside of her cloistered life. When two Indian men are commanded to appear at the Palace, chosen to be a part of a royal ceremony, Abdul Karim (Ali Fazel – ‘Furious Seven’), one of the two, enters Victoria’s world. Nervous about his part in the ceremony - and not wanting to ‘mess up’ in front of his Empress - there is a certain tension about how things will work out. Being given scant, rapid and seemingly impenetrable, instructions on to how to present himself before the Queen, does nothing to assuage Abdul’s anxiety. In the event, he acquits himself rather well and, in doing so, catches the Queen’s eye. This happenstance begins the friendship between Victoria and Abdul. Unlike the friendship between Victoria and one of her servants, shortly after Prince Albert died, this is not about soulmates, this is something else: this is about Abdul granting Victoria (Judi Dench) an insight to a world that she may have ruled but never visited. Abdul even introduces Victoria to exotic fruit! Abdul is a breath of fresh air for the Queen but someone who immediately strikes suspicion into the hearts and minds of the minions of the royal household, whose remit it is to be protective of the monarch. Nevertheless, the opposition to the friendship with Abdul is no match for the formidable Victoria (after all she is Queen). Victoria spends more and more time with her new friend; something that is seen by the opposition, as unwise and dangerous. Victoria is beguiled by Abdul, intrigued by his exotic ways, gentle nature, philosophy and his refreshing, out-of-kilter, attitudes. Abdul brings both the exotic into Windsor Castle and a friendship unfettered by formality. The household sees Abdul as a chancer, an upstart, most likely looking for an opportunity to take advantage of their Queen. The Queen will have none of it: Even Bertie, Prince of Wales (Eddie Izzard) cannot break the spell cast by Abdul. This is a funny, entertaining film with high production values and a heart of gold that leaves aside the politics and underlying issues of race and Empire.
Cert. 12
Instead, the film focuses on Victoria’s emotional intelligence: a rarely-exposed, let alone explored, element of monarchy. ‘Victoria & Abdul’ is the perfect vehicle for Judi Dench, cinema royalty herself, looking every bit as if she were born to play the Queen. The film has great charm and a sense of impish fun. It strikes an entertaining, cosy and compassionate picture of a monarch left vulnerable after the loss of Prince Albert. Script by Lee Hall (‘War Horse’ and ‘Billy Elliot’); Direction by Stephen Frears (‘Philomena’ ‘The Queen’ and ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’). Watch out for Tim Piggott-Smith, in one of his last performances, as Sir Henry Ponsonby. Splendid stuff. Jon NB You may have noticed that we’d originally planned ‘Brighton Symphony’ this month. Our apologies: we’ve had to postpone it for operational reasons – but do look out next month for some exciting news!

If you know anyone that needs help or needs aid including perhaps yourself, please come along and have a chat with us. We are a friendly bunch, and we will be pleased to see you. Coming up this year we have the Lions Fayre in Rottingdean on 16th June and our Saltdean Gala on 14 July, also we have a bar at the BVUK Armed Forces Day on 1 July. All these fundraising events will help local charities and community /Lions projects. On 20 October we have a charity concert in Rottingdean Village Hall and on 18 November our sponsored swim at Roedean. For the swim you can enter a team of any number. Up to 50% of what you raise goes to a cause that your team supports; while the main beneficiary for the Lion’s share in 2018 will again be Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice. As to the charity concert, we are pleased to announce that the house band for Blind Veteran’s UK (BVUK) will be playing for us. They are a popular local group, joining us for the first time. We are very excited to be working with them on this fundraiser as the profits will be shared equally between the Lions and BVUK. It should be a fantastic night – please watch this space for tickets. On the assistance side, major ongoing service activities include the ‘Message in a Bottle’ scheme and we also support drop off points for used spectacles. These spectacles once collected are sent for refurbishment for use in the developing world. Unfortunately Lion John Craig who collected the glasses and did a lot of other sterling work for us passed away recently and will be sadly missed. Despite this loss the service will continue. Also, the Christmas lunches and summer outings for our senior citizens are an important part of our service to the local community. In addition, we participate each year in ‘It’s a Knockout’, organised by us and other local Lions Clubs, providing lots of fun for children and adults with learning difficulties.
If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities or would like to lodge an interest in helping us at our fundraising events please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. Lion Roger Bluff

J Wagstaff Funeral Directors The branch has been refurbished with families in mind offering a fresh, calming environment. The décor and furnishings are soft and modern with an informal atmosphere. The funeral directors re-launched the Longridge Avenue office with a Grand Opening back in December. This was well received, we took advantage to introduce the charity Forward Facing who will receive our support for the foreseeable future. J Wagstaff is the oldest local family funeral directors, having served the community since 1911. The family traditions echo throughout with a new generation of Wagstaffs upholding the values and commitment to the families they serve. J Wagstaff have been part of the fabric of the local area for many years and hold dear the care and compassion required at the saddest of times. In view of this the new custodians of the day to day running have been selected to provide professional advice alongside their genuine caring empathy for the grieving.
J Wagstaff have also introduced their first highly experienced female Funeral Director Fiona Payne, who joined the company in August 2017. Fiona came to the family with many years’ experience, having worked her way up to Funeral Director. Fiona takes immense pride in her role and ensures every individual receives her upmost attention. Fiona describes her role ‘as an honour and privilege’. Our newly recruited experienced funeral arranger at J Wagstaff , Saltdean is Wendy Jamieson-Franks. She comes to us with a vast experience of many years arranging bespoke funerals. She treats every family as if they were her own, affording the respect and compassion expected by the Wagstaff family to ensure their high standards. As one of the few truly independent family funeral directors left, we are happy to offer the Golden Charter Funeral Plans providing peace of mind for the future. Currently there is a promotion until April 2018 offering £200 beat the price rise and an additional £100 promotion with the vouchers recently distributed. Wendy will be happy to meet you for a chat and a cuppa in branch.

The Grange Gallery Now that we are looking forward to Spring, why not visit the Grange Gallery in order to look at the new exhibitions? February 13 – 04 March: THE ROTTINGDEAN ART CLUB Local residents meet on a Wednesday afternoon to encourage and inspire each other; the paintings, drawings and prints created in 2017 come together for these two weeks. This exhibition will include acrylic paintings, paper collages, oil paintings and watercolours of a wide variety of subjects. March 06 – 18: MIKEY SKINNER – Constructions and BERT WHEELER – Paintings. Thought provoking and innovative, these two artists explore obsession and memory. March 20 - April 15: KEMP TOWN ARTISTS COME TO ROTTINGDEAN A group of exciting artists who live and work in Kemp Town come together in Rottingdean creating a vibrant colourful exhibition of paintings and drawings. A reminder: from 2018 the hanging day at The Grange is now Monday, not Wednesday. Hence the Gallery is now open daily from Tuesday to Sunday – this change brings The Grange in line with other museums and galleries. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10.30 – 16.00 and Sunday 14.00 to 16.00 Should you not yet be a member of the Rottingdean Preservation Society and would like to join us, please telephone 01273 301164 or email rpsmemsec@gmail.com.
