Welcome to the May Edition… This month’s beautiful cover by Colette Langton captures the sights of late April perfectly. The days are getting much longer and the weather is warming up, all signs that the summer is on its way, and (fingers crossed) we have missed the late snow we had as such a surprise last year. With luck the mild weather is now set and will encourage visitors to the Saltdean Lido Heritage Day and Beer & Wine Festival in early June see page 4-5 for details. Other upcoming events are The Concert Singers in Rottingdean on June 1 (pg 12), and The Hanover Band at St Margarets from 6 June (pg 16).

Bob Webzell It is arguably unusual that Rottingdean’s Parish Council Chairman is your Artist of the Month but Bob Webzell, an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society recently received his Excellence award of the Federation of Art in International Photography. He is a Past President of Brighton and Hove Camera Club and exhibits world-wide, lectures and judges in photography across Southern England. At work he was a Senior Lecturer in Healthcare, at Thames Valley University, London For over a decade, Bob has launched a new exhibition biannually at The Grange Gallery, and donates the entire proceeds of his photography through the charity Serian UK, which he co-founded, to build Noonkodin Secondary School in Tanzania, where Bob is recognised as an unlikely-looking Honorary Maasai Elder. His current exhibition, based upon his first book ‘African Dream’ written in conjunction with Zimbabwean Poet Wayne Visser, has already raised over £5,000 for charity and will again feature in May’s Open Houses at St Patrick’s Church, Woodingdean. There has also been a first live performance of African Dream with poetry, photographs, flute and African percussion. The DVD is in preparation.

Brighton Festival Artists Open Houses: Christine Harfleet fused glass artist and painter is holding Open House every day at 56 Rodmell Ave Saltdean throughout the month by appointment. tel: 07968 137963 to book a time to view.

Bob is sure he has ‘Africa in his blood’ and when he is not pursuing the issues of the Parish Council and Parishioners of Rottingdean, he is indulging a life-long passion for Africa’s wildlife and people. His photography demonstrates a seeing eye, and an empathy with his subject matter. Bob quotes his co-author Wayne Visser to best express his feelings: “I am an African, Not because my skin is black, but because my mind is engaged by Africa I am an African, Not because I live on its soil, But because my soul is at home in Africa” Bob’s local photography feature on the Parish Council’s website and promoting Beacon Hill Nature Reserve. His best images are well-seen ‘grab-shots’ occasionally enhanced by postprocessing. The art is often putting yourself there and seeing what others may not see. Joining a good camera club will enhance almost everyone’s images, Bob clearly believes. Bob is best contacted by email : bob@webzell.co.uk His website is www.webzell.co.uk and Serian-UK and Noonkodin student sponsorship is at www.serienuk.org.uk

Strong Passwords During the middle part of April, there was a great deal of media attention given to the HeartBleed Bug - and a lot of confusion ensued. Should we be changing our passwords due to this latest security breach? If so which ones do we need to change? When the news story hit the press there wasn't any evidence that sites had been compromised - the discovery of HeartBleed just highlighted a flaw that could potentially compromise several million online accounts - but the warnings went out, change your passwords, just to be safe. We have recommended that you keep different passwords for different sites before in this column and changing them on a fairly frequent basis will help you to remain safe. But what constitutes a strong password? The longer your password, the better - this is backed up by several websites that will insist your password is of a certain length. This doesn't mean that "thisismypassword" is a good idea - your password should, ideally, contain both upper and lower case

letters, so "tHIsIsm1PassW8rd" is a step in the right direction. Your passwords should be different for each site - the list of social media sites laid open by the HeartBleed bug didn't cover them all; so whilst we were advised to change our Facebook and Google passwords, we were assured that our Twitter and LinkedIn accounts were safe - however, had you had the same log in across all of these accounts, you would have needed to change them all. Passwords should never be something closely associated with you - your children's or your pet's names for example - the more obscure and random they are, the more they break the rules of spelling and grammar, the more mixed up and confused they are, the more secure they will be.

Financial Advice

Brave new world. Spring Budgets have had little to promise or offer UK savers and investors in recent years, apart from setting out the depth of the economic challenge ahead for the coalition government. Only last year, the mood was subdued, with talk of a potential triple dip into recession and a long and bumpy road to recovery. As Britain looks towards a general election in May 2015, the Budget contained far-reaching changes for its savers and investors.

Chancellor George Osborne, in his address on 19 March, said the Budget rewarded “the makers, the doers and the savers” in Britain. And the new pension and tax-efficient saving arrangements certainly offer radical reform of the UK’s personal finance landscape and welcome breaks for savers and investors after four years of austerity. A significant change in pension arrangements has lifted restrictions on access to pension pots and made it more attractive for individuals to invest for their retirement through pensions. And the reform of Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) brings a very welcome increase in the annual allowance to £15,000 from July this year. Osborne, in these more secure conditions, packed his Budget with a broad range of pre-election giveaways, including a reduction in the savings tax rate and an increase in the personal tax-free allowance to £10,500 for 2015/16. The Budget also restated that the Inheritance Tax threshold will remain at £325,000 until April 2018. The Budget’s relaxation of ISA rules to allow any combination of stocks and shares and cash rightly gives investors more flexibility to manage their valuable allowance to suit their attitude to risk and their needs. However, the Bank of England Governor, Mark Carney, remains adamant that the base rate will remain at a record 0.5% low while the economy recovers; and is widely expected to be held at this level until mid-2015 (www.bbc.co.uk, 20/2/14). It seems unlikely that the government would welcome a rise in interest rates just

before it goes to the polls. Osborne’s decision to champion investor choice has also underpinned the more flexible new pension regime. Perhaps most radically, he has made proposals to free up access to pension pots and change the rules for annuities from April 2015, as well as introducing a new pensioner bond. The proposal to allow anyone over the age of 55 to take their entire pension pot as a lump sum (albeit with 25% tax-free and the remaining amount liable to Income Tax) is a radical innovation that allows individuals to invest, save, spend or give as they see fit. The new pension regime admirably hands more control to individuals over their long-term financial plans. But, as with all financial planning, each person’s needs and appetite for risk or security are distinct. Retirement planning requires expert, not off-the-shelf, solutions. Osborne’s brave new world for savers and investors creates further nuances and complexities that make wealth management advice as important as ever. Health & nutrition advice

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Manuka Honey Manuka bush (Leptospermum Scoparium) is indigenous to New Zealand and bees that pollinate it are used to produce Manuka Honey (MH). All honeys contain hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from an enzyme that the bees add to the nectar, though this does not accumulate in medical grade MH. Methylglyoxal (MGO) responsible for the antibacterial activity of MH, originates from dihydroxyacetone, present in the nectar of manuka flowers and only in small amounts in others. Honey is known for its varied biological or pharmacological activities ranging from anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-hypertensive to hypoglycaemic effects. Recent evidence shows anti-metastatic, anti-proliferative and anti-cancer effects of honey in breast, liver and colorectal cancer cell lines, with promising data in prostate, bladder, endometrial, kidney, skin, cervical, oral and bone cancer cells. MH Science: Cancer: Intravenous MH combined with chemotherapy inhibited tumour growth and improved host survival in a melanoma mouse model. Diabetes: Reduced healing time and rapid disinfection for neuropathic diabetic foot ulcers (NDFU); though another study shows that MGO in MH may delay wound healing in diabetics, so caution is needed. Low dose of honey can be a valuable sugar substitute. Mucous: Potential benefits in mouth, nose and throat against coughs, periodontal disease (porphyromonas gingivalis), bacteria related to post-surgical chronic rhino sinusitis (CRS) and in reducing mucositis from chemo-radiation for head and neck cancer. Benefits in inflammatory bowel disease (colitis) in rats. Wounds: Most favourable research has been on wound healing, related to anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, including with drug resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile (D.dif). Anti-inflammatory activity is thought to stimulate the immune response in a wound, enhancing healing in burns, ulcers and other flesh wounds, including surgical and chronic pilonidal sinus (PSD) wounds. Ingestion has very few proven benefits, yet I have patients with a rare genetic skin condition who find great relief from their symptoms by ingesting MK 40 UMF. More research is needed.

In the News: The BBC News: June 2004 reported antibacterial properties for healing wounds. The Independent: May 2009 reported additionally fighting MRSA, fungi and protozoa and treating stomach ulcers caused by helicobacter pylori bacteria, a cause of stomach cancer. Also improvements in some forms of eczema as well as acne and skin blemishes and relieving digestive issues such as acid reflux, indigestion and gastritis, using its anti-inflammatory properties to reduce the pain of stomach complaints. The Telegraph: August 2009 reported reduction in hay fever symptoms from local honey containing local pollen; MH contains an extra, naturally occurring active ingredient that is stable and doesn't lose its potency when exposed to heat, light or dilution. The higher this Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) the higher the powers, including antiviral and antibacterial. The Daily Mail: August 2013 warned of cheap honey being labelled as MH, selling as "liquid gold" for ÂŁ45 per pot! Look for the UMF mark. Cautions: Not suitable for infants under 12 months, people allergic to bees. Diabetics and people undergoing chemotherapy need to consult their doctor. Adding MH to your Diet: A spoonful for a sore throat. I love a snack of oatcakes with MH and cinnamon. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Rottingdean High Street part 2 Mike Laslett

An enjoyable and informative afternoon stroll may be taken along Rottingdean High Street, concluded by a drink at one of the excellent pubs or tearooms en route. Last month we walked up the High Street as far as St. Whipping Post Lane which leads to Whipping Post Aubyns. The next buildings of note are adjacent, House. New book by local author Since the launch of my supernatural suspense / occult horror novel, Hunger Pain (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00EVW96S0), as a Kindle eBook on Amazon, it has been downloaded in eight different countries. During a recent free promotion Hunger Pain went to number 8 in the free Kindle horror books in this country and number 11 in America. It also managed to hit the number 6 spot in the free Horror books in Mexico, and that was with only two downloads! I am currently in the process of writing my second horror novel. I hope to have this ready for publication early next year. In the meantime, in February this year I self published The Orange Tree as a Kindle eBook (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00ILV99XY ÂŁ0.77). This is a collection of 49 poems which I have written over the last ten years and wanted to share with readers. There is an eclectic range of poems in the book, so there should be something for everybody, including some about local places. If you have downloaded and read my books, thank you for your support. matt@kebeling.f2s.com Follow me on Twitter @MatthewEbeling

Successful Letting with Denise Whittington of Lets Go

A local update on the rental market Sale prices have been rising quite dramatically in a short space of time, and properties have been selling unusually quickly. This phenomenon has affected the lettings market, leading to a shortage of rental property, as many landlords and owners of second homes have taken advantage of the lively sales market to capitalise on their investment. At the same time, with the aid of the ‘Help to Buy’ scheme more first time buyers have been able to purchase a home. The properties they can afford to buy tend to be at the lower end of the price rangetypically the type of property which is most sought after by tenants. The general shortage of rental property has led to rents increasing as demand exceeds supply. This situation has squeezed out tenants at the lower endnot only have the rents become more expensive, there is also not a lot to choose from. Tenants have to pay more for less. One of the problems that landlords can experience is setting the rent so high it takes longer to find a tenant. This can be a waste of time and counter-productive as an un-tenanted property does not produce any rental income. The level of rent achievable can vary from one week to the next, depending on the number and type of tenants looking for a home at any one time. Rent levels are also influenced by other factors such as: location, whether the property has a garage or garden, the standard of decoration, size and layout of the rooms and so on. Rottingdean rents tend to be higher than those in other areas in the Deans not only because it is an attractive, sought after village, but also because the properties generally tend to be of a higher standard, and larger. Rents in parts of Woodingdean are now similar to those in Saltdean; properties in both of these areas range from small terraces to bungalows and larger houses; many of which are very individual in character and layout, as they have been extended by their owners to suit their own lifestyles. Quite a lot of the properties, being located on high ground on the edge of the Downs and not far from the sea, have lovely views. If you have a property to rent out it is worth speaking to your Local Letting Specialist as they are experts in the local market and can advise you on how to get the best price…………

Neighbourhood Watch

It Can’t happen to me! At this time of year you may be enjoying going to the shops to make the most of the Sales and discounts offered. This is just when we may be distracted and fall victim to some kind of theft. That’s why it is important to remember a few tips to help avoid this happening. Avoid walking through large crowds, but if you have to then keep valuables close. Always place valuables like a phone or wallet in a front or inside pocket. Keep nothing of value in back pockets. Keep straps of bags fairly short, elbow length is recommended. Put the strap across your chest instead of on the shoulder if you can and get into the habit of closing zips and fastenings. Wear the bag in front of you and not behind. This applies to backpacks that can be opened if they are on your back. Don't count money or get credit/debit cards out until you are actually paying for an item. When paying by card put it away while still at the counter, directly the salesperson returns it to you. If eating out never let the waiter take your card away as there have been incidents of the cards being copied so always go with them! Have your Bank & Credit card numbers handy so you can have them stopped immediately if they are stolen. Try

not to take all your cards out with you, just take the ones you are going to use and leave the rest behind. That way you will not lose everything if the worst happens! Never leave anything unattended. Don’t put bags on the back of a chair try putting it between your feet whilst having a drink so you know where it is, and take it with you if you go to the bathroom. When trying on clothes in a shop, if you're with someone ask them to hold your items or go to the changing room if alone. Remember that thieves and pickpockets are not obvious, they can be young or old, smart or scruffy! Try to be aware of someone getting ‘into your personal space’ and step away or make it known you have become aware of them. Hopefully by remaining aware and vigilant we will not become a victim! Senior’s Tea club in Saltdean

53

Senior’s Tea Dance a success! Local senior citizens enjoyed a tea dance at the end of February this year, funded by The House Project and Maria’s Homecare Companions. There was lots of free tea and cake, live music and dancing - even with walking sticks! The usual Friday Tea club - 'The Deans Senior Tea Club' usually consists of around 20 seniors coming together to socialise and Play Chess, Scrabble and Rummy Club! The Tea club began last November funded by Maria Davey, a mother and part time carer, to create a fun and entertaining get together for the senior locals - to help combat loneliness in older age and promote well being and lifestyle. This is such a good way for the seniors to stay in touch with the community. Interest has grown from four regulars to around fifty who attended the Tea Dance.

of confidence. This would be a great help to enable us to reach far more isolated elders. To find out about future events, please check out our website mariashomecarecompanions.com or call 01273 307435

We have local support from The Saltdean Residents association, The British Red Cross, Neighbourhood Watch, The House Project Charity and others. We meet every Friday between 2-4pm, at St Nicholas Church Hall, Saltdean. Do pop along and meet us and our volunteers. We also welcome sponsors and we are hoping to find a generous benefactor to donate a mini bus, as so many elderly residents are unable to attend due to transport problems and lack

Winifred Hoyle memorial Rottingdean Spring Musicbench Festivalupdate

News on the Winifred Hoyle memorial bench. Thanks to all those who helped with, and showed an interest in Winifred Hoyle’s memorial bench. There is now a beautiful bench with a plaque opposite the bowling green. I’m sure Winifred would have loved the view. We held an informal get together at the site on April 14th to celebrate the placing of the bench and Winifred’s memory. Afterwards Marjorie Hampton very kindly invited attendees to Court Barn for coffee and tea.
