Welcome to the May Edition…

I didn’t mention my New Year’s resolution in this year’s January magazine - just in case I didn’t see it through, the good news is that I did - last month I took part in the Friston Forest 5 Mile Forest Run and finished, it was a very slow time but then I did walk up the hills. My son also took part in the race and finished seconds behind me, the difference being that he had just completed the 10 mile version and had therefore done 2 laps of the course!

Our cover this month is very much a running theme as well, it shows the April 2015 Brighton Marathon as they make the turn at the Ovingdean Roundabout, well done to anyone from the Deans area who took part, and as usual many thanks to Colette Langton for taking the time to get out there and take the picture.

Email scams a nasty business Most of us are aware that the hugely wealthy royalty from Nigeria, or the rich dignitary from the Middle East doesn’t really want to deposit £1m in our personal bank accounts. Whilst more widely known, we have to assume that some people still fall for this scam otherwise they wouldn’t still be sending the emails out. A newer scam has come to our attention, or should we say inboxes recently – that of an outstanding invoice. Nasty this one – playing on the fact that if they chance a business email address the person in question will owe money to someone. And they’re good: Dear Sirs, Kindly find attached our reminder and copy of the relevant invoices. Looking forward to receive your prompt payment and thank you in advance. Kind regards Robert Grimes But beware – open the attachment and it could be the most expensive “invoice” that you have ever opened.

Your first clue should always be the company name – look at the email address of the sender – if it states “businessname.com” have you ever heard of them? If you are in even the slightest bit of doubt, do not open the attachment. Don’t click on any links, Google the name separately. If you do owe money to a company you should be able to easily access contact details online (not through the email links!) and can ask to speak with their accounts department. And what if you have opened such an invoice? If you know how to, run a scan using your anti-virus. If you have noticed anything different about the running of your computer then get in touch with your IT support company as soon as you can. But don’t ignore it – if you’ve opened a dodgy attachment and let something nasty in it won’t go away on its own.

Health & nutrition advice

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Sweet Potato The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cultivar developed in Japan and has edible leaves and stems. It is only distantly related to the potato and does not belong to the nightshade family. They are cultivated throughout tropical and warm temperate regions wherever there is sufficient water to support their growth. Sweet potato ranks as the world's seventh most important food crop, and has major contribution to energy and phytochemical source of nutrition. Nutrition: Sweet potatoes and leaves are rich in vitamin A (beta carotene) and C, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium and fibre, with the leaves additionally rich in vitamin K. Roots are rich in anthocyanins, particularly in the walls of the skin and leaves are rich in polyphenols. Vitamin A deficiency: A major health problem worldwide that leads to blindness, retarded growth and death, particularly in developing countries, largely affecting pre-school children, pregnant and lactating mothers, and the rural poor. Sweet potato is a low priced crop, which can be a year-round source of vitamin A. Space Food: Sweet potato has been selected as one of the crops for NASA's Advanced Life Support Program. It primarily provides carbohydrate as an important energy source, beta-carotene, and ascorbic acid to a space diet. Science: Anti-Cancer: Due to high anti-oxidant capacity, high phenolic and anthocyanin content; colorectal cancer prevention due to anti-proliferative, anti-metastatic and apoptotic mechanisms. Polyphenols in the leaves suppress cancer cell growth, on colon, stomach, prostate, promyelocytic leukaemia showing a potential for cancer prevention. Anti-Inflammatory: Due to anthocyanins. Anti-Obesity: Purple sweet potato extract diminished leptin secretion, indicating that growth of fat droplets was suppressed. Anti-Oxidant: Due to scavenging of free radicals by anthocyanins offering protection against degenerative disease. Leaves reduce oxidative stress and free radical damage due to polyphenol content. Atherosclerosis: Protective potential of anthocyanins from purple sweet potato against low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation; suppresses development of atherosclerotic lesions and oxidative stress independently of changes in cholesterol and lipid levels in mice. Cardiovascular: Leaves reduce cardiovascular risk. Constipation: Sweet potato had a positive impact on the prevention of constipation and the defecation satisfaction in leukaemia patients receiving their first chemotherapy. Diabetes: Purple sweet potato flavonoids decreased blood glucose and lipids levels in diabetic rats. Useful to prevent and improve diabetic symptoms by stimulating human immune activity in addition to its anti-diabetic effects. Flavinoids in leaves controlled blood glucose and modulated blood lipid in diabetic mellitus mice. A metastudy showed insufficient evidence about the use of sweet potato for

type 2 diabetes mellitus; further trials, methods and varieties of sweet potato are needed. Hepato-protective: Intake of purple sweet potato beverage with anthocyanins significantly decreased serum levels of hepatic biomarkers in healthy men with borderline hepatitis. An extract of purple sweet potato had hepato-protective effect on liver damaged rats, it is also a good source of anti-inflammatory anthocyanins to prevent alcoholic liver damage. Immune: Leaves improve immune function. Increased polyphenols from purple sweet potato leaves modulated the immune response in 15 basketball player during a 2 week training period. Rheumatoid Arthritis: A chronic inflammatory condition; benefits due to anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Vaso-relaxation: Phenolic content and anti-oxidant properties of leaves afford protection at the vascular endothelium level. UV Protection: Anthocyanins extracted from purple sweet potato and added to cosmetic cream improved the cream's UV absorption ability, particularly against UV-B rays. Adding Sweet Potato to your Diet: ● Cooking by steaming preserves the anti-oxidant and polyphenol contents ● Delicious roasted in thick slices ● Wedges or chips as a treat ● Mash (can add yogurt or coconut milk for a creamy version or cayenne/ ginger / curry for a spicy version) ● As soup with variations of ginger, sesame oil, curry powder, sour cream, lime juice, coconut milk We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Local History - Part 36

Mike Laslett

One of our Deans is Missing: Balsdean - a lost village

If you climb Bazehill Road Rottingdean as far as Balsdean Reservoir, then continue north for one mile, you will see some roofless barns ahead. Pause here, as you are now standing in the middle of Balsdean, a hamlet rather than a village, but nonetheless a settlement for over 800 years. What evidence of settlement can you see today in this tranquil, sheltered valley? Firstly, there is a plaque marking the site of the altar of a Norman chapel which was built around AD 1130 for the Cluniac monks of St Pancras Priory, Lewes. The Vicar of Rottingdean was obliged to take say four services a year at one time but by 1780 it was being used as stabling.

Site of the Norman Chapel

Plaque at the site

Secondly, you can see the foundations of Manor Farmhouse, built after an earlier manor house was destroyed by fire in 1764. Here was Manor House Farm and, to the north where you can see some barns, was Norton Farm.

The Manor House

Buster explores the ruins

(Picture property of the Regency Society)

The reason there is so little evidence of the two farms and their cottages is that during the Second World War the army requisitioned the area for target practice. The unfortunate tenants were given only two weeks to vacate by Brighton Corporation in 1942. Anything still standing at the end of the war was bulldozed. The explosions could be heard all over Woodingdean. This was not the first time that the area had seen noise and military action. The French having burnt Rottingdean church in 1377 were headed for Lewes but defeated in battle near here. In the late 18 and early 19 Centuries many military exercises were held in the area prior to The Spanish Wars and The Battle of Waterloo, often observed by The Prince Regent. One such review in 1810 saw 10,000 volunteer troops and 30,000 spectators. There was also smuggling, some local cricket matches and the use of Norton Farm as an asylum, in the following years. Fortunately all you can hear today is the bleating of lambs and the singing of skylarks as you traverse this peaceful valley northwards towards Castle Hill Nature Reserve and the bus back from Woodingdean!

Let Them Entertain You

Part 9 - Producing Shows and Cabarets Saltdean based entertainment agency First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd has revealed another string to its already experienced bow. As well as being a leading entertainment agency for local weddings, parties and corporate events, they have a sister company, First & Foremost Events Ltd, which actually produces shows and cabarets in theatres and venues around the country. “This company allows us to use our amazing performers and our own artistic flare to provide quality entertainment not only in grand theatres, but also in smaller local venues, where we actively encourage the local community to come along and enjoy a regular live show at a very low cost”, explains Artistic Director Chris Neilson. Currently they have two shows in production. The first, in support of the Royal Hippodrome Theatre, Eastbourne, is “Dame Shirley Bassey – The Ultimate Tribute”, on 23 May, starring Paula Randell, the UK’s no.1 Shirley Bassey impersonator, with guest star Andy Eastwood, Britain’s top multi-instrumentalist. “As well as being a marvellous evening of music and fun, we hope that this show will provide a welcome boost for this beautiful theatre, built in 1883, and run by a dedicated team of volunteers, who are currently trying to bring it back to life as a long term venue.” Their next production is a new regular afternoon musical entertainment for the local community, which is already gaining lots of interest and support. “Matinee Melodies” is a live musical afternoon show suitable for all, although it has a natural leaning towards the older patron. Described as “A Selection of Musical Favourites, Singalong & Songs from the Shows”, it will star Gary Richard, a wonderful variety performer and very special guest Peter Stanford, who has appeared in over 15 major musicals, including London West End productions such as “West Side Story” & Disney’s “Beauty & The Beast”. “We intend to perform a different version of Matinee Melodies every couple of months at The Community House

Main Hall, Meridian Centre in Peacehaven”, says Chris, “starting with the first Matinee Melodies on Wednesday 10 June at 2:30pm.” “At a cost of just £6.00 per ticket, we hope that Matinee Melodies will become a regular afternoon show, and a place to meet friends over a nice interval cuppa or ice cream!” Door To door transport is available via C.T.L.A. by calling: 01273 517332. Tickets are available on the door for both of these shows, or you can purchase in advance by debit or credit card. Neighbourhood Watch

No Cold Calling! As a result of consultation with Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean Neighbourhood Watch, Saltdean will soon become a ‘No Cold Calling Zone’. What is a ‘No Cold Calling Zone’? The aim of a no cold calling zone is to work in partnership to reduce the overall incidents of rogue trading and distraction burglary. Quite simply, No Cold Calling Zones are about local residents or communities having the confidence to say “NO” to uninvited salespeople and to warn rogue traders and cold callers that they are not welcome in an area. Incidents where people have lost thousands of pounds to rogue traders are now not unusual. The Zones are an initiative that helps to provide support to residents and send a clear message to rogue traders that they are unwelcome and their trading practices will be investigated if they cold call residents within the designated area. What to do if a salesman or trader visits: In situations where an uninvited salesman or trader does visit a no cold calling zone, a resident would be expected to notify either Sussex Police or Trading Standards. Trading Standards will assess each incident on a case by case basis to consider what action is required. If an unwanted visit is made by a national company, then you can send a letter to the company advising that the area is now

a no cold calling zone and therefore such visits are not welcome. How does it work? Each resident will receive a letter detailing how the zone works and a door sticker that we request is placed on your front door or near to it. Sussex Police will be placing signs in prominent locations around Saltdean. This will provide a visual deterrent. What happens now? In partnership with Sussex Police your local Neighbourhood Watch will soon be delivering a letter and your door sticker. All you need to do it affix the door sticker to your door or window. For more information please contact your NHW Co-ordinator or Police Community Support Officer. A new kitchen There is more to fitting a kitchen than just fitting a kitchen! If you are thinking of having a new kitchen fitted there are some things it is worth considering before you start. Good planning and attention to detail are the key to achieving a successful result you will be more than happy with.

Be realistic about how much you want to spend. If you have a fixed budget find out about any structural or building work that will be needed and how much it will cost before you decide on your kitchen fittings. The work can appear to be simple and straightforward but there may be more involved than you might originally think. Breaking down each stage of the work will help to see what is actually involved. For example taking down an internal wall will free up extra space but could incur more time and expense if it is load bearing, or if its removal reveals different floor and ceiling levels. Changing one thing often has a ‘knock on’ effect. Moving a wall may open up the possibility of moving or replacing windows and doors. Removing old tiles can reveal an uneven wall which will need plastering before new tiles are fitted. New units and appliances will take up different floor space, so the flooring is likely to need replacing. The size of your kitchen will ultimately dictate its design. In a small galley kitchen it is even more essential to make the best use of the space available, whereas a larger kitchen will provide more options for appliances such as a dishwasher or washing machine; a central island or breakfast bar. What is most important? If you love cooking and entertaining, it may be the quality of the oven and a large American style freezer. If you want practicality more than luxury, or if the property is to be rented out, then ideally a more functional but attractive, hard wearing, and easy to clean design may be the best option. Lighting, electrical wiring, the repositioning of power points and radiators, laying of new waste and water supply pipes: all need to be considered at the planning stage. There are regulations regarding the location of gas boilers: you may decide to keep what you have, or replace it with a new one, or take the opportunity to have underfloor heating fitted instead. Worktops need precision cutting and joints need a professional finish to prevent any water penetration that could cause damage and swelling.

A specialist will arrange and oversee the initial planning and supply of the kitchen, the fitting, building, electrical, gas and plumbing work, tiling, plastering, and decorating. By involving any additional tradespeople at the planning stage, considered decisions can be made based on realistic costs and timing to cause the minimum disruption. R & R Property Improvements have been providing their clients with kitchens and bathrooms for over 30 years. Their professional, helpful, and knowledgeable approach has made them one of the most highly recommended specialists in their field. For an initial chat contact Bob on 01273 303276 or 07778060658 or email to bobwhittington@ntlworld.com

‘Cool’ Country comes to Saltdean Question: What music will the ‘kool kidz’ be listening to this summer? If I told you the answer was British Country music you would probably throw down your Stetson and slap your thigh in amazement! Yet British acts are stepping up to the plate to give our American cousins a real run for their money. Country duo The Shires have just broken into the UK top ten album chart and twin sisters Ward Thomas from Southampton have been recording with American Country legend Vince Gill. Flying the flag for British bands are Brighton based Country rockers The Diablos. They have a new album out which is receiving rave reviews and on Saturday May 16 you can see them perform a hometown gig at Saltdean Lido. This is a group of writers and musicians right at the top of their game, so don’t miss a chance to see them on your doorstep! Tickets £4 on the door. Further info at www.thediablos.com.

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, Csections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone

should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can selfcare in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions

Lion’s events The Deans Charity Challenge – Saltdean Oval 17 May Our new fundraising initiative entitled the Deans Charity Challenge will be held this month and is a sponsored run or walk over either a 9 mile or 5.5 mile course, the majority of which will be on footpaths and bridleways over the Downs. This will take place on Sunday 17th May 2015, starting and finishing at Saltdean Oval. Those taking part are asked to seek sponsorship for this event. When the money is collected up to 50% will be retained by entrants for their chosen charity and the balance will be given to the Lions. We have also requested that entrants collect sufficient sponsorship to ensure that a minimum donation of £15 is made to the Lions. Children under 14 (and dogs on leads) are welcome if accompanied by an adult, and we do not ask them for a minimum sponsorship, although if they can obtain any it would be most welcome. The main beneficiary of the Lions’ share of funds raised will be Autism Sussex, who will have a stall in the Oval. King and Chasemore estate agents are pleased to sponsor this event. Free water will be provided at checkpoints on both routes. There will also be a bar and barbecue in the park for entrants and supporters at the completion of the run / walk. It should be a very special event. To request an entry pack and associated sponsorship forms please ring as soon as you can 07917 155048 or email: r&slions@sortium.com . Lions Fayre - Rottingdean Village Green 13 June / Saltdean Gala 18th July Our Lions Fayre in Rottingdean will be held on the Village Green on Saturday 13 June and our Lions Saltdean Gala in Saltdean Oval will be held on 18 July. For both of these events, any local group or small trader that would like to have a stall is most welcome to contact us – please see details below.

Walking round the Fayre you will come across a book stall, Punch and Judy, bouncy castles and a coconut shy. You will find other games and stalls along with a bar and the world famous - in Rottingdean at least Lions barbeque. The barbeque uses locally sourced meat from our local butchers – the big sausages and meaty beef burgers with carefully crafted onions will delight your taste buds – reason enough to be world famous. Please do not miss this barbeque if this is to your taste. Also, ice cream and candy floss will be readily available. Arena events during the day will include dancing and various other activities demonstrated by local organisations. Tombola tickets will be available for purchase during the day for instant prizes. Our Summer Draw tickets will also be available and this will be drawn at the end of the Saltdean Gala in July, first prize £200! If you would like more information on any of the above activities, or to book a stall at our Fayre or Gala please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. As we kick off our new initiative this month for the Lions, I would like to wish all our entrants for the Deans Charity Challenge the very best and an enjoyable day. Don’t forget to savour the delights of the Lions barbeque on the day. Lion Roger Bluff

The traditional Lions Fayre has been running in Rottingdean for well over forty years, and as a regular event has grown significantly in stature with it becoming one of the highlights of the summer season in Rottingdean. It is held on the green in the village and, as has always been the case, entry is free.

Open House - No. 75 After the success of our first Christmas Open House in December, we are back with a new House adventure entitled “From Downs to Dean”. The Downs looks to celebrate all that is magnificent about the countryside surrounding us and It’s re interpretation by our creative Artists and Artisans using Ceramics, Textiles, Jewellery, and Print. The Deans looks at Saltdean from its first concept in the 1920s to the present day, how it was once a Grand destination for public entertainment with the building of the Saltdean Lido and Ocean Hotel in 1938 and later in 1952 the arrival of Bully Butlins and his Red Coats, which launched many a celebrity career. To celebrate this our reflective exhibition looks at Saltdean with pictorial and audio references from its past to the present and will run alongside the Open House.

As a textile designer, I enjoy meeting the public to discuss my work and love of vintage photography and ephemera all these are reflected in my Printed Textiles and Cushions designs. I hope that we have encouraged you to venture out to Saltdean and experience our house and to meet our Artists and Artisans. Open House starts 2ⁿ May and runs through to the end of the month at 75 Bannings Vale, Saltdean.

Historic year for Saltdean Lido Last month marked the fifth anniversary of the formation of the Save Saltdean Lido Group which came together to stop the residential development of our Lido and what a five years it’s been. A few landmarks along the way have been getting the Listed Building status upgraded to 2*; persuading BHCC to retake control of the site; forming the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company in order to bid in the tender process for the lease and finally obtaining a 60 year lease from BHCC. In the meantime, the projected costs for the project had soared as the true state of both the building and the pool emerged. Now at last, thanks to the belief of our supporters and tireless work of our dedicated volunteers, the CIC has secured key grants which will allow us to commence a multi-million pound restoration project which, by the date of publication, will already have started. We had originally planned, using the grant from the Social Investment Bank, to patch up the pool which would allow us to open for a few weeks this summer before the main works started. However, the main grant for the outdoor works came through more quickly than expected and we had to reluctantly make the decision not to do the interim works (which would have meant spending thousands of pounds patching up the pool, only for that work to be destroyed when the main renovation began at the end of the season). Due to the complex nature of our funding streams the restoration will be completed in 2 phases.

Phase 1 which is now in progress, will focus on works to the lido’s swimming pool and external grounds. This will mean that the pool is open for business in spring 2016. Works will include: ● Brand new plant room to work in conjunction with renewable energy ● Swimming pool returned to one tank (designed as a 40 metre pool suitable for a broad user group including serious swimmers and families) ● Heated water ● Paddling Pool with wet play area ● Landscaped grounds ● Temporary changing rooms & showers Phase 2 will begin next year when our fundraising objective is complete. This will cover the colossal task of restoring the entire main building, so that its failing reinforced concrete is repaired and that the building upgraded with first class community and leisure zones to make the site sustainable. Later in the summer, we will be announcing our community share offer, which will help towards our on-going fundraising and allow local residents to be really involved in the project, so watch this space! If you want to keep up-to-date with our progress and our summer events, you can check our Facebook page (Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company) and/or sign up for our email newsletters via the Contact Us page on our website at saltdeanlido.co.uk.

Macmillan charity news

Macmillan Team Up Team Up from Macmillan Cancer Support is a new service for anyone affected by cancer in Brighton, Hove, Adur and Worthing. We noticed that there are plenty of willing people who want to volunteer their time, but they don’t have a lot of it to spare. Macmillan research also showed that some people with cancer and the people who look after them could do with an extra pair of hands around the house from time to time. Whether you want to volunteer or get some support, you can post or pick up a task whenever you’ve got five minutes spare. There’s no regular commitment or obligation at all and none of the tasks should take longer than an hour. People registering can be at any stage in their cancer journey, or looking after someone who is, and you don’t need to have received any support from Macmillan in the past: “I had surgery and radiotherapy rather than chemotherapy, so I wondered if I would be eligible for Team Up. I thought there were probably others who needed it more than I did. I was juggling work and treatment, so I didn't always have enough energy to get things done. I signed up to Team Up to get some help with housework and I'm glad that I did. Because my awesome volunteer did the hoovering and cleaned the bathroom, I could spend what little energy I had on cooking myself something healthy for dinner.” (Lisa) All our helpers are security checked and we meet them all personally:

“I joined Team Up and I’ve done a bit of gardening for a lovely man. We got on well, and I find doing a bit of work in the garden quite therapeutic. The service is really easy to use. Once you have registered there is an email notification if there are any tasks nearby and, if they look like something you have time and would like to do, you can contact the person making the request.” (Marion) Find out more and register at www.goteamup.org.uk and tell anyone who you think would like to know about this fabulous free service. You can also find us on www.facebook.com/teamupmacmillan and www.twitter.com/teamupmacmillan
