From ZX to Raspberry Pi ... How the UK Software Industry was born Most people of a certain age will remember the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. These mighty beasts were connected to a TV and a cassette tape recorder. Programs came from three sources: programs on tape, listings in magazines or by writing your own. During the summer of 1982 I adapted an address book listing in BASIC to become a way of storing the contents of my music collection. I quickly discovered that my collection was too big to be stored within the limited memory store of the ZX. Further research showed me it was the inefficient way that BASIC worked prevented me from cataloguing all the tracks.
things out of this primitive technology. The UK software industry was born. For the next twenty years this country were a dominant force in the IT Industry. However, the creativity started to fade as modern PCs did not draw out the same skills. A solution needed to be found. The Raspberry Pi Foundation created a basic bare board computer that could help children and enthusiasts to learn to program. In January we will see how a charity could produce over 19 million machines in six years. Have a great Christmas, see you in 2019!.
Either Assembler or Machine Code were the way forward. As they were low level languages they were far more efficient in their use of the available memory. After three abortive attempts and a pile of books I realised I did not have the aptitude and admitted defeat. However these frustrating machines did breed an army of programmers who could squeeze amazing

Interaction… The Arts And Intergenerational Connections Essential to Well Being Nial Joyce of Clifden House, Seaford reflects on a busy and very colourful Autumn. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford residents have been involved in several community initiatives ranging from bowling competitions to art exhibitions as well as entertainment from a visiting farm and local nursery school. In October, a local Seaford nursery school joined forces with Clifden House residents to enjoy a fun filled day of animal magic. The activities team at the dementia care centre invited the travelling farm to set up camp in its back garden and it was an incredibly successful and sunny day.
The farm comes to Clifden House
Nial Joyce, Clifden House said: “It was a truly great experience, enjoyed by all generations. Our residents were thrilled to welcome the children and everyone loved being involved with the farm animals. “The importance of intergenerational interaction was recently highlighted by Age UK in a report titled: Making Intergenerational Connections. We believe that intergenerational programmes are not simply ‘nice to have’ but rather are necessary for the ongoing well-being of our residents.”
Indoor Bowling at Denton Island Bowls Club
This was closely followed by Clifden House residents taking on the Denton Island, Newhaven bowling team in a ‘fierce’ battle on the green. The joy and satisfaction for residents of Clifden House from this friendly competition has resulted in a re-match scheduled over the coming months. Finally, with the 100 anniversary celebrations of Armistice Day taking place, Clifden House was exceptionally proud of the artwork developed by its residents, in particular by Verna, and supported by Art Techniques. The end product was a wonderful applique peacock. The peacock has been a symbol of resurrection and new life from ancient day and has decorated the altar at St Peters Church, East Blatchington, Sussex since All Souls' Day. If you need advice, or just need to talk to one of our dementia care experts, email: office@clifdenhouse.co.uk. We’re always happy to help. Local Therapist Review
My Reflexology Experience with Holistic Treats Last month I went to visit Michelle Rees at her Newhaven home based clinic for a session of Reflexology. It was not my first experience with Reflexology as I’d had it before with someone I consider to be very good, so no pressure Michelle, no pressure… In Reflexology the therapist presses or massages pressure points in your feet which correspond to different organs and areas of your body, a skilled therapist can often identify areas of your body where you might be having problems, although they will also point out that it is not a diagnostic tool and that if you are feeling unwell you should always seek medical advice. My first impression of Michelle was of someone friendly, knowledgeable and very confident about what she was doing, her clinic space is in her home and it is well set up with mood lighting, soft music and a professional treatment couch. There is a treatment questionnaire for new clients to fill out, then Michelle left me to get comfortable before returning to take care of my tired old feet. After a quick cleansing spray my feet were wrapped in hot flannels for a couple of minutes, such a nice experience just by itself. Then it was onto the treatment, Michelle uses a talc free powder which was quite a change from the lotion based treatment I’d experienced in the past, it felt beautifully smooth and best of all doesn’t leave your feet feeling slightly greasy. I don’t find it easy to relax, I don’t feel like I’ve earned a sit down in front of the TV until at least 9pm, and need to keep busy until this time else I get rather twitchy, so it was lovely to feel myself starting to unwind as Michelle went about the treatment, lots of people drift off to sleep, and I
can understand why, but I didn’t want to miss the experience as I could feel it doing things to my feet and core area. Reflexology can help your digestive system and certainly I found myself becoming very hungry by the end of the treatment despite having eaten before I arrived. The treatment ended with a soothing foot and ankle massage, Michelle told me of a couple of problem areas she’d identified, one being my right shoulder which does click continuously in one of the exercises I do at circuit training, she then left me to get my socks on and have a drink of water before seeing me out. All in all it was a wonderful experience, I’ve put my body through a lot of punishment during the last week, with circuit training, two practice runs for the Brighton 10K, skateboarding, skating and boxing so to have something relaxing and really pleasant for once was such a treat. Michelle offers Reflexology for £27, the treatment takes about an hour and when you think that many clinics will charge anything up to £60 this is fantastic value. She also offers a range of massage treatments, manicures, pedicures, etc. (see her ad below for details). Gift vouchers are available and make the perfect pampering gift for your loved one. Newhaven Gig Rowing Club How often do you hear of a club starting up with no research of how it will take off in a deprived area? Only set up as someone saw it in another area and thought let’s give it a go for it to die off in a few months. Well I have to say that is not the case when it comes to Newhaven Gig Rowing Club (NGRC) as it has gone from strength to strength. They are the most easterly Cornish Pilot Gig club in the country.
found it is so much easier for everyone. The club have been lucky to have Mark Elliot who runs Yappley.com came forward and set this website up voluntarily.
So, what is a Cornish pilot gig and Gig racing? The Cornish pilot gig is a six-oared rowing boat, built of Cornish narrow leaf elm, 32 feet (9.8 m) long with a beam of four feet ten inches. It is recognised as one of the first shore-based lifeboats that went to vessels in distress, with recorded rescues going back as far as the late 17th century.
This club has done amazingly well in such a brief period of time and is set to carry on growing and becoming stronger. In 2018 the club entered a super vet’s race in Appledore, took part in the Hamble river raid, entered two gigs into the Ouse day race against Lewes rowing club, held their own family fun day and raced Lewes rowing club again, took part in London Cornish regatta and had 2 crews take part in London’s Great river race what is 23 miles!! Not only that they also organised a Moon row which raised over £1000 for cancer research.
The original purpose of the Cornish pilot gig was as a general work boat, and the craft is used for taking pilots out to incoming vessels off the Atlantic. At the time, the gigs would race to get their pilot on board a vessel first (often those about to run aground on rocks) in order to get the job and hence the payment. Today, pilot gigs are used primarily for sport, with around 100 clubs across the globe. The main concentration is within Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly; however, clubs exist in Sussex, Somerset, Devon, Dorset, Wales and London. Internationally, there are pilot gig clubs in France, the Netherlands, the Faroe Islands, Australia, Bermuda, and the United States. All modern racing gigs are based on the "Treffry", built in 1838 by William Peters of St. Mawes, and still owned and raced by the Newquay Rowing Club. How did NGRC come about in Newhaven back in 2016? Well it all started with 1 man and a passion, he roped in 3 other people to get involved. Soon the plastic Gig Laura jane was being used. Then they took a risk and brought Amelie formally Isis. From very little publicity and just being seen out on the water more people were asking about this bright yellow beauty and how to get out on her. From June 2016 to start of 2017 there was enough people to start forming regular rows. With more people getting involved and the Gig Amelie being out more often, more Facebook posts, plus word of mouth NGRC has grown so much in such a small time. Over 2017 the club has taught over 200 people to row, and the same in 2018. The club now has 2 row coaches who are trained to Level 2 club coach British Rowing standard, 6 cox’s and a further 6 cox’s in training. Over the summer of 2018 the Gig Amelie and Seven stars Tribute gig from Club in a box thanks to British rowing, CPGA, Sports England, St Austall’s brewery and Gig rower, have been out every weekend from dawn to dusk and more. The club is currently undertaking some much need maintenance to the Gig Amelie, thanks to club in the box gig Seven Stars NGRC can carry on rowing while this maintenance is taking place. Now winter is here demand hasn’t eased up. Newhaven Gig Rowing Club has had to develop a website to be able to handle the demand for more rows and crew training sessions. Up until the start of November 2017 all the bookings were being done though the Facebook group. Now the Gig club have gone over to the website and have been using it for over a year they have
The website has allowed the club to set up membership, keep track of learn to rowers, competent crew, race crews, and team building days. This makes sure that everyone gets a row in a weekend as there is such demand for it.
Next year they plan to do all that again but have also entered the World gig championships in the Isles of Scilly in May 2019 and the Launch of Waterbourne their own regatta. Anyone can join the club and we certainly would recommend it to all. They have amazing facilities, trained coxswains and coaches. You can join via the website www.ngrc.co.uk/getting-started They only charge £1 membership with a free sweep stroke and maiden voyage session, then only £3 a row for all learn to row sessions and competent rows. Once you become competent you have the option to become a member. So what are you waiting for? Book on now and become part of Britain’s fasting growing sport. The Sailhaven Project The Local residents of Newhaven are blessed to live by the sea. Have you ever walked past and imagined yourself sailing on one of the beautiful Yachts in the harbour? The Sailhaven team is restoring an old wooden yacht called “Naima”. Naima a Mahogany built 29.3 ft Cheverton Crusader, made on the Isle of White in 1961. Inside her lives a single cylinder Diesel Bukh engine. Since only around 130 of those were made, she is a piece of our maritime heritage. She came last 5th of November from Greenwich Yacht Club, where she was kindly donated to us by her former owner. You are welcome to come and see her at Lochin Boatyard, Robinson Way, Newhaven. There are long hours of work ahead. The hull needs fixing, the paint needs to go and the wood varnished. Once finished though, she will be permanently be moored at the Newhaven marina and available for local residents to enjoy. Depending on the generosity of our local sponsors, boat trips and tuition will be either free of charge or bear a very minimal cost. We are thankful to Veolia and Simpson Marine for their contribution towards our endeavour. However, we are in need of more support. If you are a local company who cares about Newhaven residents, please contact us. We would be delighted to have your name on our website and perhaps on the boat and sails? You are an individual who loves tinkering with old wooden boats or you might just be interested in learning woodwork?
The Naima arriving in Newhaven in early November, as can be seen a lot of work is needed, the project is open to the whole community.
Please contact us! You can do so by looking us up on Facebook “Sailhaven project” or send us an email sailhavenproject@gmail.com. You can also visit our website at www.sailhaven.org We hope to hear from you soon Sailhaven team

Free parking in Newhaven Town Centre After many months of hard lobbying at district council level, Newhaven Town Council is delighted to see that one hour’s free parking is being introduced in Newhaven’s two town centre car parks as from Monday 19th November. Town Mayor, Councillor Paul Boswell said " this will, I hope, give a much needed shot in the arm for local businesses and shops. I hope it will have two positive effects. On the one hand, it's great news for our hard-pressed traders, on the other, it should help to persuade drivers not to park on pavements in the High Street, which can and does deter some shoppers. Thank you, Lewes District Council."
National Lottery support for Newhaven and Denton Peace Day commemorations in 2019 to mark Centenary of the ending of the First World War Newhaven Town Council has received a National Lottery grant of £9,900 to deliver a project commemorating 100 years since the Peace Day events held in the town in 1919 to mark the end of the First World War. Awarded through the Heritage Lottery Fund’s First World War then and now programme, the project will culminate in a Peace Day Community Event at Newhaven Fort in July 2019 to enable all sections of the community to join in the celebrations and find out more about the town’s heritage. Year 6 children from Harbour Primary and Denton Community Primary schools will enjoy workshops as part of the project which will help them to uncover the story of Newhaven and Denton’s Peace Day commemorations and re-imagine them in their own celebrations. They will use newspapers and photographs from 100 years ago to see how peace was celebrated in 1919 and plan their own Peace Day. In 1919, children in Newhaven and Denton were given souvenir mugs to commemorate peace and taking this as inspiration, children will design their own peace mug. On Saturday 20th July 2019 Newhaven Fort will open its doors for the town’s Peace Day celebrations which will include heritage talks from local historians, a Peace Day trail, film showings, arts and crafts and much more. Free tickets to the Fort for this community celebration will be available for local residents.
This project will build on the success of a previous First World War project in Newhaven which was also funded by a grant from Heritage Lottery Fund and which has created the lasting legacy of the Poppy Trail of information lecterns around the town telling local residents and visitors alike about the town’s vital role during the First World War together with a wealth of additional information on the town council’s website https://www.newhaventowncouncil.gov.uk/newhavensfirst-world-war/introduction/ The Town Mayor of Newhaven, Councillor Paul Boswell said “We are delighted that we’ve received this support thanks to National Lottery players. We hope everyone in the town will join together to remember with pride the vital role Newhaven played in the First World War and to celebrate the coming of Peace.” The photo shows Peace Day being celebrated in Denton in 1919 and is from the collection of Newhaven Museum.

Battle’s Over – 100 years since the end of World War One The first public engagement for our new Town Crier, Jason Ede, was to perform the national Cry for Peace around the World in front of a large crowd at the special “Battle’s Over” event held at Newhaven Fort on the evening of Remembrance Sunday, 11th November 2018. The event was jointly organised by Newhaven Town Council and Newhaven Fort. Singers from Meeching Amateur Dramatic Society performed World War One songs and the First World War galleries were open for the event. 184 tea lights were lit, one for each Newhaven man who died as a result of the First World War. At 6.55pm bugler Heidi Watkins played the Last Post and there was a two minute silence before she played the Reveille. At 7pm, Young Mayor, Huey Cripps lit a ceremonial beacon symbolising the coming of peace and then Jason delivered the Cry. The same cry was delivered at the same time by hundreds of other Town Criers around the country.

Santa Claus comes to Newhaven High Street Father Christmas will be opening a new grotto in Newhaven High Street. Santa will take over the Shop, run and operated by A&N Events throughout the month of December. Newhaven Town Council and A&N Events are building a complete bespoke grotto, using film set effects, props and backdrops to completely transform the former sweet shop into the snowy home of Santa. This completely free event, will give children and families the chance to meet Santa, take photos in the grottos Sleigh and enjoy the festive surroundings. A Spokesman for A&N said “I feel visiting Father Christmas is a very important part of Christmas and unfortunately, with the rise of the cost of living and people relying on food banks etc, many children would miss out. After months of planning, the proposal to run a free grotto was put forward, it’s now believed to be the only completely free professional Santa’s grotto in the UK! Something we are very proud to be bringing to Newhaven” The grotto has been extremely well received and with sponsors and charitable donations assisting with the costs involved in this huge undertaking, the grotto is set to become a major talking point and well-loved addition over the coming years. A&N added “Everyone is getting behind it. Newhaven Chamber of commerce have just kindly donated £500.00 to put towards gifts for the children, it really is going to be an amazing experience” Santa @ Newhaven High Street can be found on Facebook and will run from 1st December until the 23rd December.
