Don’t Blame the Internet for the death of the High Street‌ Everyone blames the Internet for the demise of local shops but it was inevitable. In 1985 I attended a lecture on the death of the High Street, what I heard that day is coming to pass - just 20 years late... Since the 1970s independent shops have been driven out by the arrival of chain stores into smaller towns and secondary shopping centres. As the national chains expanded, every town had the same shops. The bigger supermarkets gradually outgrew the High Street and headed out of town. These new bigger stores offered more choice, lower prices, longer opening hours and ample free parking. The writing was on the wall.
designer coffee, mobile phones, cheap clothes, budget sportswear and kebabs. So who will be the survivors? I reckon in ten years the last men standing will be Aldi, Asda, Argos, B&Q, Co-op, Currys, Dunelm, John Lewis, Lidl, Morrisons, Next, Pets at Home, RicherSounds, Sainsbury, Tesco and Waitrose. In most sectors, one will dominate, the rest will slide into history. Stores adapt, otherwise we would still get everything at corner shops......
The success of the new supermarkets lead to the rise of the out of town retail parks. Independent businesses rarely migrated because the units were too big and too
expensive. Many larger towns, like Eastbourne, have ended up the four or more out of town retail parks crammed into any suitable piece of land. Chain stores moved out of town or shut down. Leaving a few chain stores that did not fit, particularly Department Stores being left behind. These once proud businesses find themselves encircled with shops peddling bets,

Clifden House News

Continuing to live a fulfilling life - even with a diagnosis ‘Life does not end with a dementia diagnosis’ is one of the key tenets of Clifden House in Seaford. With a mission to help its residents, who all suffer with dementia, to continue to live a fulfilling and engaging life it operates an impressive variety of activities and events. “This allows every resident to engage as much as they desire with the world around them, both within and outside Clifden House,” said activity coordinator, Deena. Some of the recent events at the home included supporting the Wave Charity with a number of residents attending its recent concert in the town. This was followed by all the residents attending, at least one of several, pantomimes over the holiday period. Bus trips with lunches at various local towns plus several musical performances at the home are a regular occurrence. Nevertheless it is always The Swing Time Sweethearts’ visit to Clifden that raises the roof with their wide range of 1940’s wartime and swing songs. Nial Joyce of Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, said: “Keeping our residents engaged with what they enjoy is very important. With spring on the horizon, we are increasing our focus on physical and sport activities; these include more walks, more bowls, pitch and putt and even ‘walking-football’ at the local Wave Leisure Centre. Luckily we have also managed to get hold of some Albion FC tickets and will be taking residents along to a match in April too!” THANK YOU Clifden House’s annual raffle raised almost £200 thanks to the generous donations of over 20 local retailers and suppliers. These include Cost Cutters, Onneka, Bobs, Toy Town, Seaford’s Greengrocer, Shahjahan Indian, K&L Jewellers, Marks Jewellers, Scoop & Weigh, Cloe’s Coffee Shop, JK Pope, Oscar Computers, Totally Wicked, Jason’s Barbers, Seaford Motorcycle, Biker Bits, Angies Newsagent, Redgold Opticians and Phoenix Hair and Beauty. The money will be used to buy a large gaming table for the residents to use. Deena, activity coordinator at the home, said “We are thrilled to be able to get this for the residents. Our pool table is already very popular so a multifunctional gaming table will be very welcome.”

Newhaven’s New Bandstand Have you seen the fantastic new bandstand which has been erected by the town council on Denton Island? This lovely, quirky structure was designed and built by local artist Christian Funnell and is topped by a roof tiled with galvanized steel “seashells” and an iconic cormorant. It will become the venue for a regular series of concerts and musical events of all kinds during the summer. In the meantime, its beauty is being admired by drivers passing through the town on North Way.
If you would like to perform some music at the Bandstand this summer, please contact Newhaven Town Council admin@newhaventowncouncil.gov.uk or tel: 01273 516100. The bandstand was fully financed by grants from the Government’s Pocket Park Fund and Section 106 funding from the incinerator.
A festive event was held just before Christmas when the Glynde and Beddingham Brass Band as well as Newhaven’s own Earthquake Drummers and Ukelele Group celebrated the arrival of the bandstand with a small crowd of onlookers. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a mince pie and mulled wine. This was just a taste of things to come – look out for lots more Bandstand events when the weather turns warmer!
