Welcome Page

Welcome to the January edition… January is always a quiet month for us with our magazines as we are putting them together while everyone is getting ready for Christmas, obviously the last thing anyone is thinking about at this point is the New Year, that said we have included Stanley Bernard’s excellent local history article, a nice introduction to the talented folks at Newhaven Art Club, more local news on page thirteen and of course our regular contribution from Ocean Views on page 5. If you would like to get your group off to a flying start in February please submit your copy by 20th January, there is no charge for local groups and clubs so what have you got to lose? This month’s cover picture by local resident Anagha Deodhar may have been taken when the weather was a little warmer and dryer but hopefully offers the promise of better weather in the not too distant future.

Raspberry Pi the new computer revolution A change in Government policy changed the emphasis from computer science to using Office applications. Other than a cursory introduction to programming, it was removed from the ICT syllabus. Students were arriving on Computer Science courses with no experience of writing programs. At the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory they realised something needed to be done. The way forward was to design an ultra-cheap stripped down machine. No money was wasted, it was just a bare circuit board in a packet. To minimise costs the developers used SD Card for storage, an HDMi port for a TV (or monitor)and power would be supplied by a mobile phone charger. These were things an owner would probably already own. A cottage industry has grown up supplying starter kits containing a case, an OS, handbook and all the

parts needed. Third parties developed operating systems, applications and add-on hardware. The pricing structure meant that the Pi was within reach of hard pressed schools, parents and hobbyists. The foundation has earned a healthy income from industry using the Pi as a cheap programmable circuit board rather than developing a specialist card from scratch. Additional funding has come from the Government and industry. Income has gone back into new models as well as creating teaching courses and materials for teachers. Today enthusiasts have made home security systems, home PCs, robots, camcorders and a myriad of other crazy projects. www.thepihut.com offers the basic Pi Zero W (ÂŁ10+p&p); Amazon has starter kits from ÂŁ20. Now everyone can afford a slice of Raspberry Pi.

Newhaven Art Club Newhaven Art Club was formed over 50 years ago and for many of those years met at the Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven, East Sussex and later at Bishopstone. We now meet in Peacehaven We are a friendly group of artists from Newhaven, Peacehaven, Seaford, and the surrounding area, who meet weekly to paint and draw together. Some of us are experienced artists while others are new to painting. Although we don't offer instruction there is always someone on hand to help beginners with any questions they may have. Our programme is very varied and includes a mutual discussion afternoon once a month where members can bring their paintings to be viewed in a friendly and supporting atmosphere. Our winter programme includes demonstrations and life models as well as afternoons of doing "just what you want". During the summer months, there are outside painting and sketching afternoons at local beauty spots as well as meetings at the homes of members where we indulge in tea and cakes in the garden. We also hold an Annual Exhibition at the Crypt Gallery in Seaford, where members can exhibit up to six paintings. There is a small charge for exhibiting. Our annual general meeting is in October every year. Why not come along to one of meetings and see how you get on! Look forward to seeing you there. 12 Local History

Newhaven Port Newhaven was meant to become one of the most important ports in the country and for a time it seemed to be well on its way to establishing itself as a major port. For a history of the town it would seem right therefore that we look back at how the town developed and for a period it seemed to achieve his ambition. It is thought that the first mention of the name New Haven occurred in 1566, for it was at this time that the River Ouse which came out to a harbour at Seaford became blocked. It was decided that at Meeching, there’s a new cut for the river would be made and come out at the sea there. Which is why Meeching may well appear on old deeds and in road names but the town itself very quickly adopted the new name of Newhaven. It was soon realised that this new harbour that had been built at Newhaven was a port that could be used as a safe haven in storms, and for this reason it was at regular intervals register an updated finally some major improvement were made when the railway arrived in 1847. There had for centuries been a cross channel ferry service from Brighton and in 1823 passengers embarked from the Chain Pier and Shoreham if the weather made Brighton unsuitable. The port of Shoreham knowing they were the major port in the area negotiated too hard with London & South Coast Railway Company while Newhaven taking the best deal on offer won out, In addition the railway company bought land on the east side of the harbour to build their London and Paris Hotel. From 1848 the regular packet service as it was called between Newhaven and Dieppe commenced and a few years later following a dispute over sailing rights additional services to Honfleur and St Nazaire in France were added, they lasted until the outbreak of World War One, it was at this time that the port of Newhaven began to decline. Having grown into a major port overtaking Shoreham for about half a century, the turn of the 1900’s saw changes take place in trade which was to leave Newhaven as mainly a transit point for the cross channel ferry trade. Newhaven prior to the railway and for some time afterwards was also a large farming community, and we know that one of the farms

had a very substantial house. Although now under the roads between Newhaven Parish Church and the town centre, was Meeching Place farm house. In 1853 Meeching Place Farm, 450 acres of land and buildings was sold for £20,000, no small sum in those days. The house itself had 5 bedrooms, 2 dressing rooms, Dining Room, Breakfast Room and Drawing Room. There were also four other houses in close proximity for the farm bailiff and farm workers. As already hinted at, the history of Newhaven is more than a history of it’s port and harbour. In the next instalment of this brief history of the Town we will look at the Town itself. Stanley Bernard – His Open University Masters degree dissertation was on Newhaven and is the author of News from Victorian Newhaven, published in 2014 and still available via Amazon £10.99. His new book is also available at £15.99 plus postage from Amazon – A true history of the nearly new towns of Peacehaven & Telscombe.
