I’ve found Newhaven to be a surprising place, if all you do is drive through on the A259 you will get the idea that there is not much to see, if you spend a bit of time walking round as I often do with our dogs you will find it’s hidden beauty. What has really impressed me though is the sense of community that local people show. I’ve joined a Facebook group called Newhaven Noticeboard, its been a great place to find out what’s happening in the area, and is full of helpful people trying to reunite dogs, cats and children’s clothes with their rightful owners, marvellous! The Newhaven Magazine is also available on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/The-Newhaven-Magazine We will also have a web page up shortly, there are still a few technical details to sort out. We had a good response to our request for photographers last month and so we will be placing a different person’s picture on the cover every month so that each of them get a chance to feature. This month’s photo is by Emma Boswell, we’ve had to crop the image to fit the cover so have reproduced the original picture on page 16. We have had quite a few takers on our offer to place community news and articles in the magazine. Thank you to everyone who has submitted their details so far, we hope this will continue so that in the coming months we can fill our pages with local news, groups and events.

Six Months of Shortages ... and nothing to do with Brexit! Every year there is a shortage of something in the computer industry, mostly it passes unnoticed in the outside world - this time will be different. Intel is not making enough processors to meet demand. Like many shortages there are many contributory causes. Intel underestimated the demand for businesses updating their machines, a surge in Server demand and problems manufacturing 9th Generation processors. The short term solution is to stop producing the budget processors that consumers have in their PCs. As the profit on Celeron, Pentium and low end i3 CPUs is measured in pence, production has halted. Factories have switched to making the more expensive processors for business PCs and servers, with their higher profits.

The big manufacturers like HP and Lenovo have long term bulk contracts, so they should have their needs met. The rest of the industry will be scratching round for Intel stock, however, there is an alternative. After several years in the doldrums AMD could now have their big chance to get back in the market. The new AMD Athlon 200 GE has just been released and could be the budget CPU builders need for under ÂŁ100. It is a two core 3.2 GHz with a basic graphics chip. Coming soon are Athlon 220 GE and 240 GE versions. The AMD Ryzen 2200G is a good i3 replacement. So AMD has the products to fill the gap, can they get the processors and motherboards on the shelves to benefit from Intel's own goal? The race is on.....

Mike Laslett

Shipwrecks and Smugglers

Local Historian Mike Laslett has been writing history articles for The Deans Magazine for many years, he has kindly given us permission to reprint one of them… In modern times we barely notice the massive container ships ploughing along the distant horizon. Our ancestors would have particularly noticed large ships for two reasons: shipwrecks and smugglers.

Most coastguard cottages, including those at Saltdean, no longer exist. However, those at Portobello may still be seen opposite the Smugglers Rest, which was once the home of the Chief Coastguard.

There were so many shipwrecks in the 18th Century that locals erected experimental ropes and winding machines to winch any survivors to the cliff top, sadly with little success. One of the worst local shipwrecks occurred in 1800, on the rocks just west of Newhaven, when 105 men from HMS Brazen were lost. A memorial to them stands in St Michael’s churchyard, Newhaven. Captain James Hanson perished with his ship, the only survivors being one crewman on board and twelve men who were fortuitously aboard a foreign vessel they had detained the previous night.

Former Chief Coastguard’s home, now The Smugglers Rest

Coastguard’s cottages at Portobello St Michael’s Memorial

One consequence of this tragedy was that local people raised funds for a lifeboat at Newhaven in 1803, some 20 years before the first RNLI boat was introduced. Of course we cannot feature shipping without some mention of smuggling. Each gap in the cliffs made an ideal landing point, especially Saltdean Gap. Handy cellars and deep paths across the Downs assisted the concealment of contraband on its journey inland. Originally wool was smuggled abroad to avoid taxation then luxuries like brandy and tobacco were imported. At one time most villagers took part, even the Vicar of Rottingdean, Dr Hooker, and Captain Dunk, a butcher who lived at Whipping Post Cottage. Riding officers patrolled the clifftops in an attempt to prevent smuggling. With surplus sailors available after the Napoleonic Wars, a Blockade was set up, which eventually formed a permanent coastguard service.

The 19th Century would have seen safer and more legitimate shipping. Large paddle steamers operated on the ferry routes from Newhaven to France, while from 1823 the Chain Pier finally gave Brighton a landing stage for the arrival of the great and good including Queen Victoria.

Community News

New Community Mosaics Installed The lovely mosaics made by local children and adults at a series of workshops held during the Newhaven Festival in August have now been installed in their new home at the junction of Chapel Street and Fort Road. The workshops were led by local artist Carol Havard and funded by Newhaven Town Council. Four panels were produced, each depicting a local scene showing the beauty of Newhaven and its surroundings. The panels have now been installed on the plinth of the maritime sculpture. They replace some previous mosaics produced in 2006, which crumbled due to damp penetration of their wooden backing. A new type of cement back board has been used for the new mosaics which it is hoped will prevent the same issue happening again.

12 Dick Whittington lived! Sir Richard Whittington, unlike other pantomime stalwarts, really did exist. However it’s unlikely that anyone actually called him Dick once he became Lord Mayor of London. He did come up to town from Gloucester, where he was born in 1354, to seek his fortune. As the third son to a wealthy family he had no prospect of an inheritance. When his father died young Dick needed to find a job. It is unlikely he had to walk all the way with his belongings in sack over his shoulder. An apprenticeship to the merchant Ivo Fitzwarren was arranged. He proved to be a successful merchant, a “mercer”, importing luxury fabrics and exporting English woollen cloth. He made a lot of money and then increased his wealth further by loaning vast sums to three Kings, Richard II and Henrys IV and V as well as other nobles. They needed lots of money and he knew how to set the rate of interest in his favour. He did marry Alice Fitzwarren who was the daughter of his former boss but it was hardly a whirlwind romance. He was 48 when they married in 1402. She was 24. Unfortunately she died only 9 years later and they did not have any children. He was buried next to her when he also passed away. He died in 1423 at the age of 69 in his beloved London having been Mayor 4 times. The King first appointed him in June 1397 when the incumbent died but was subsequently elected by the citizens of London on three occasions. During his life he was a public benefactor. He paid for the installation of sewers in some poor districts of the capital and had a hospital ward set up for unmarried mothers. He also financed the building of public drinking fountains across the city. As he had no heirs he left his fortune to charity and the Sir Richard Whittington Trust continues to do good work to this day. The story we know today first appeared some two hundred years later at the time of Elizabeth I. This is the first mention of any cat. One piece of good news is that London was not so overrun by rats that a supercat was needed to rescue it. The bad news is that there is no record of Sir Dick ever owning any sort of cat. Dick Whittington is this year’s panto from the Peacehaven Players. Details can be found on their Facebook page or website www.peacehavenplayers.co.uk.
