Welcome
Welcome to the November Edition… Our cover picture is a reminder that November 10 is Poppy Day, also known as Remembrance Sunday, thanks as usual to Colette Langton for providing this for us. In addition to our regular features this month we have a review of the Dora Bryan Exhibition at The Grange, Rottingdean, this is a rare opportunity to learn more about this legend of stage and screen. See page 49 for details. Another big event in Rottingdean this month is the Treasure Hunt, organised by Rottingdean Smugglers, this promises to be a fantastic family adventure, and sets the tone nicely for next month’s Smugglers Night on December 7. Details of the Treasure Hunt are on page 57. Please remember that we will need all articles and adverts for the December edition by 15 November at the latest (earlier is always preferable), based on this month it is going to be very busy and I would hate for anyone to miss the deadline. Artist of the Spring Month Music Festival Rottingdean
Artists Open Houses The Grange Art Gallery will be part of the Christmas Artist Open Houses. Sat 7th Dec. will also be Smugglers Night. So Gallery organiser, Amanda Davidson has invited a wonderfully colourful and inspiring group of her artist friends to take part in both events, to entertain children and adults alike. Amongst the paintings, textiles, gifts and cards to purchase, there will be many special objects to delight and entertain you! Orna Schneerson Pascal is an Israeli artist who lived and studied art in Paris before moving to London in 1991 and then Brighton in 2001, exhibiting wherever she goes. Orna approaches her work with passion and her lively, uplifting acrylic paintings embody life, energy and optimism. Corina Stupu Thomas moved to Eastbourne from Romania after escaping life under a harsh communist regime and the revolution that set her country free. Corina sought colour to replace the grey of her youth. Her 'intuitive painting' method in mixed media has, she says, no clear beginning and no end.... and is a journey into the unknown where birds symbolize freedom, reflecting her amazing experiences.
Inspired by the tiny paper theatres contemporary with the Royal Pavilion, Philip’s quirky world of fairgrounds, pantomime, circus and puppets include a 'Smugglers of Rottingdean' 3D theatre. Amanda Davidson attributes her enthusiastic love of art and design to her German/Jewish roots. She will be exhibiting an eclectic mix of Punch and Judy puppets, picture collage, needlepoint Xmas stockings, recycled knitting and theatrical ballet paintings.
For Doreen Savage, art became her saviour since serious ill health lost her voice. Now her art speaks for her with the joy of life. Dee will be showing vibrant paintings of Brighton Pavilion, butterflies and flowers, an array of humorous textile art and an amazingly detailed dolls house that she has made entirely from recycled materials. The quintessentially English Philip Sugg, retired to Rottingdean after a career as historian, designer and animator.

I have also contributed towards the writing of a law handbook. One evening sitting in the car in traffic next to Rottingdean pond, I had a flash of inspiration with the idea for a book: a horror / supernatural story – Hunger Pain. At the time I was in the process of reading Stephen King novels, back to back. I developed the idea and then mapped out the chapters of the book, before putting finger to keyboard and actually starting to write. It took me almost a year to complete the first draft. This was followed by editing and improving the writing.
One day, Marcus’s life is suddenly shattered and his whole family’s safety is threatened. Out for a quiet drink with his best friend, Marcus experiences such a horrifying ordeal and suffers such terrifying anger that he is unable to distinguish between hallucination and reality.
This summer I made the decision to publish the book as an eBook on Kindle, as I wanted other people to be able to read my work. Some of the story takes place in Saltdean, Rottingdean Roedean and Ovingdean, as well as Brighton and
As these frightening events develop, Marcus wonders if they are the result of a vengeful curse put on him and his childhood friends many years earlier. The race is now on for Marcus to trace his friends. Is it too late or can Marcus break the power of the curse before he and his family are destroyed?

Catkins Home Care My love of cats began when I was a little girl growing up in a small Devon village. Our family cat quickly became my favourite, although we had a dog and many other small animals ranging from guinea pigs to geese that I grew up with and helped care for on a daily basis. I’ve always liked the independent ways of cats, their nature and all the quirky mannerisms of their many different personalities. My new business, Catkins Home Care for Cats, is a natural progression of my love and understanding of cats. For me, my cat is at the heart of my home and I know the home is at the heart of my cat. Staying at home ensures a familiar environment and routine, both of which are crucial factors in your cat's health and happiness. Cats are very territorial and are most happy with a home life, which is why home cat care is the very best option for your cat when you are away on holidays, business or weekend breaks. Catkins offers a real alternative to boarding, and home cat care is a service that many cat owners are welcoming and recommending to their friends. You no longer need to arrange boarding or transportation either side of your

break, avoiding the inevitable inconvenience and upset this brings. You will have the peace of mind knowing that your cat is being cared for in his or her own surroundings, ensuring that you enjoy stress free holidays in the knowledge that they are doing the same. The real bonus is having your cat there to welcome you back home immediately you return, with all their usual love and affection. Based in Rottingdean, I cover all the local Deans areas, also east Brighton, Telscombe Cliffs and Peacehaven. So call, text or e-mail me today on 07886929032 / 01273 397443 deborah@catkinshomecare.co.uk and I will be happy to arrange a consultation. You can also visit my web site at www.catkinshomecare.co.uk

Trains & Boats and Planes: This month - trains!
Whenever you catch a number 12 bus to the train station you probably wish there was a railway closer to home, sadly this has always been a mere dream for those living in this area…….or has it? Rottingdean had a railway which ran along the beach between The Aquarium and Rottingdean from 1896 to 1901, when it was removed to enable groynes to be built. Officially known as the Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway but nicknamed the Daddy Longlegs, it was built by Magnus Volk and was featured in the August 2012 Deans Magazine. Our picture shows the Rottingdean terminus. The generator is under the landing pier, which survived until 1910. Note the legs which travelled on two sets of twin tracks, underwater at high tide. The current was drawn from an overhead wire as on a tram and returned via the rails or, at high tide, the surrounding water. No wonder the lucky bathers experienced that tingling feeling! Some of the concrete sleepers are still visible at low tide.
who was employed full time to illustrate Charles Neville’s publicity material promoting the emerging Peacehaven. In some posters he even hinted at a railway in Peacehaven, though one was never proposed! (see the 1921 illustration bottom left) Another railway in the area did exist, this time in Saltdean. Sadly for us it was never built for carrying passengers. In the early 1920’s roads around The Saltdean Estate were constructed using chalk and flints quarried from local pits like the one above Greenbank Avenue (previously known as Quarry Road!) A small cable railway ran up and down the hillside to The Vale. From here a narrow gauge railway had been constructed to distribute the chalk. It had a small petrol driven locomotive which hauled wagons along the length of The Vale, where steam rollers, horses and special machinery would be used for road construction. In the picture below, which is taken from The Peacehaven Post, the rails and wagons are just visible on the right.
Each summer you may still ride between The Palace Pier and Black Rock on the original 1883 Volk’s railway, the oldest electric passenger carrying railway in the world. Magnus Volk is buried locally, in Ovingdean churchyard, just to the west of the church porch. One of Magnus’ sons, Gordon Volk, was an artist

Successful Letting with Lets Go
Successful Renting 20 with Denise Whittington of Lets Go
A Landlord in the Deans ? Some Questions & Answers Part 2…………. 1. How will the Government’s ‘Help to Buy’ scheme affect the rental market? There are differing opinions on the effect of this initiative intended to encourage more movement in the housing market. The stated intention is that it will make it easier for first time buyers and movers wanting to buy at the middle to lower end of the market to get mortgages. This could lead to tenants buying, making more rental property available, and landlords selling, thereby reducing the number ! Critics of the scheme are saying that the increase in potential buyers could push up house prices. At this stage it is unclear as to how many tenants will meet the mortgage lenders eligibility criteria and if there will be any noticeable long term effect on the rental market. 2. Can I get a Buy to Let or a Let to Buy mortgage under the scheme? These are mortgages which produce an ‘investment’ income and as such are not included in the scheme. A buy to let mortgage is obtained on the property you are purchasing to rent out. A let to buy mortgage enables you to rent out your present home (whilst purchasing another property to live in yourself.) The rental income in both cases is used to cover the repayments on the mortgaged property. 3. Which is the best area in the Deans to look for a rental property to buy? The Deans area is becoming more popular with tenants looking to move out of Brighton but to be within easy reach for work, shopping, hospitals, schools and universities. Rents are more affordable, and there is a greater variety of houses available in a quieter environment. Each area of the Deans has its own characteristics. Rottingdean is popular because it is an attractive seaside village with a lot of history and character: rents tend to be higher. Saltdean has more ‘modern’ properties, with a range of sizes and types. Popular with tenants are the bungalows
which tend to be smaller and less expensive. Similar properties are available in Woodingdean and rents there are rising as people consider the benefits of living out of town. There is usually a higher demand from tenants looking for two and three bedroom properties at the middle to lower end of the market. For this reason, as long as they are in good condition and not overpriced they will let reasonably quickly and you should avoid the property being empty, so maintaining a regular rental income. There are also tenants looking for larger properties at higher rents. If you are thinking of renting out your property or buying to let and would like to have a chat with Denise or Karen, visit Lets Go at 59 High Street, Rottingdean, Brighton, ‘phone 01273 236547 or email to: denise@letsgoproperty.co.uk Denise Whittington (B.A) is Director of Lets Go Lettings & Property management specialists, established in 1997. Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Cayenne Pepper It is named after the city of Cayenne in French Guiana. It is a capsicum related to bell peppers, jalapenos and paprika and is part of the nightshade family. Capsaicin is the main ingredient responsible for its heat, rated at 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville units. Traditionally used for muscular pain, headaches, improving circulation and gastrointestinal protection. It was also added to herbal formulations because it acts as a catalyst for other herbs and aids in their absorption. It showed strong evidence of helping in the fight against many types of cancer. Nicholas Culpeper Complete Herbal 1653 (paraphrased!) Eases coughs, wind, colic, expels phlegm, aids digestion, provokes urine. Some benefits when mixed with (x) ● expels kidney stones (saxifrage) ● expels a dead birth (pennyroyal) ● eases sore throats (honey) ● dissolves hard knots on the body (turpentine) ● removes skin spots, marks and discolouring (saltpetre) ● carbuncles (hen's grease) ● dissolves skin hardness (sharp vinegar) ● heals venomous sting or bites (tobacco leaves) ● eases toothache and prevents teeth rotting (gargle with husks in water decoction) ● the ashes rubbed on teeth, will cleanse and whiten ● helps watery inflammation of testes or vagina (applied warm with wine) ● two spoonfuls daily (steeped in wine for a day) with fasting to sweeten stinking breath ● for hysteric and other female diseases! Modern Science Shows Some studies show opposite effects of capsaicin, making it a double edged sword and confusing! ● Anti- Cancer and Cancer Protective: Inhibited tumour growth in prostate, colorectal, breast and leukaemia cancer lines, though not in lungs. Some studies show it as pro- cancerous! ● Anti-Fungal, Anti-Oxidant, Anti-Inflammatory: Relieved allergic airway inflammation in mice. ● Bladder: Helps over active bladder, via a catheter. ● Blood Pressure: Reduced heart rate. In another study it raised heart rate and blood pressure! ● Cholesterol: Improved lipid profile and aortic function in hamsters fed a high-cholesterol diet. Reduced atherosclerosis in cholesterol-fed rabbits.
● Diabetes: Lowered blood sugar in dogs and increased insulin secretion. ● Heart Attack: Vasospasm in otherwise healthy 25 and 41 year old male using cayenne pills for dieting. Yet capsaicin is also a vasodilator! ● IBS: Decreased intensity of abdominal pain and bloating. ● Immune: Profound effect on gut-mediated immune tolerance and autoimmunity. ● Pain: Chewing peppers relieved stubborn trigeminal neuralgia. Plasters on acupoints decreased the need for pain relief after jaw/face surgery. Plasters helped reduce retching, laryngospasm and vomiting post operatively in children. Capsaicin cream helped chronic soft tissue and back pain. ● Rhinitis: Intra-nasally rapidly and safely improved symptoms in rhinitis. ● Weight Loss: Accelerates the rate of fat loss and helps maintain lean muscle tissue combined with exercise and diet. Helps abdominal fat loss. A topical application to obese mice limited fat accumulation. Red pepper with caffeine leads to reduced calorie intake when individuals are given free access to foods. Adding Cayenne to your Diet: Sprinkle on steamed vegetables, meats and salads, add to stews and smoothies. Considering the double edged sword, adding tasty amounts to the diet is recommended rather than taking excessive amounts in tablets. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. The Grange Events news
The Grange Rottingdean Review of the exhibition Tribute to Dora Bryan - Star of stage and screen On Friday 13th September actress Dora Bryan OBE - Our Dora - who has become both a national treasure and an entertainment legend was joined by her sons William and Daniel, grandchildren and friends for the Private View of "Dora Bryan, Miss Showbusiness - A Celebration!" an exhibition on her life's work at The Grange Art Gallery & Museum, Rottingdean. Asked by BBC television who covered the event what she thought to the exhibition she replied: Excellent, the whole thing is so good. It’s a great tribute, it really is! Dora, now 90 years young was recalling an incredible 71 year career showered with honours including the British Academy Award which she received for her performance in the film A Taste of Honey in 1962, the Olivier Award in 1994 for her outstanding performance in Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party, and in 1996 Her Majesty The Queen conferred on Dora the Order of the British Empire for her distinguished and outstanding services to entertainment. From her early success in London Revues which included Living For Pleasure in 1958, Dora turned to musical comedy as the West End star of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1961) and Hello Dolly! (1966), and for many years she has been a much loved film actress starring in a string of fondly remembered British comedies including The Great St. Trinian's Train Robbery with Frankie Howard (1966), You Lucky People with Tommy
Trinder (1955), Carry On Sergeant, the first of the classic Carry On films (1958) and The Night We Got The Bird with Brian Rix (1961). Dora later played at the National Theatre and added plays by Shaw, Jonson and Sheridan to her extensive repertoire, and made her Broadway dĂŠbut in 1987 playing alongside Peter O'Toole in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. More recently she appeared in the BBC's Last Of The Summer Wine and Absolutely Fabulous. Dora and her family can look back with pride on a career that has touched the heights, and also the hearts of her millions of admirers, amply justifying the title Exhibition Curator Marcus Bagshaw is proud to give her in this tribute to her life and work - Miss Showbusiness. Marcus Bagshaw said: Miss Bryan has not only lent us all of her awards for the exhibition, but also her sequinbedecked costumes and personal scrap books, which go right back to her childhood, and are an absolute treasure trove of theatrical memorabilia. Dora Bryan, Miss Showbusiness - A Celebration! runs at The Grange Art Gallery & Museum, Rottingdean until April 2014. Open Mon to Fri 10.00am to 4.00pm, Sun 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Closed Wed. Admission Free. For enquires please call the Exhibition Curator Marcus Bagshaw on 07826 236827.

Get Fit with Marco Gasco
Breathe you gotta breathe! Over the past few years, the importance of proper breathing has been embraced by many sports coaches, myself included. I can’t believe that it has taken so long to discover what Yogi’s have known for thousands of years. The dramatic mobility and posture changes I have seen in individuals by modifying their breathing mechanics can be astounding. Overall results don’t always happen quickly but positive improvements can be immediate just by changing breathing patterns and the rib cage position. Here are my top 3 favourite breathing drills for you to practise: Crocodile Breathing: Lie face down with your forehead resting on your folded arms. Get comfortable and focus on relaxing, the floor will provide sensory feedback to let you feel your belly breathing into the floor. With your normal breathing pattern you will probably feel the majority of your breath through the chest with minimal belly/midsection breathing. Now what you need to do is as you breathe in focus on filling up your lungs, belly, rib cage, and lower back trying to make yourself as wide as possible with a 360 degree breath. You should take about 3 – 5 seconds to breathe in then at least 4-6 seconds to exhale. 3-Month Breathing: Lie on your back and bend your knees with your feet off the ground, your thighs should form a 90 degree angle with your torso and your lower legs should be in the air parallel to the floor. Think about keeping the spine nice and long with your ribs down and chin tucked. The challenge will be to hold this position while breathing properly. Just like the Crocodile Breathing think about breathing ‘wide’ lengthening the spine and keeping the pelvis neutral, do not let your pelvis rotate down as you breathe. Try for a smooth natural breath-
ing pattern. If you find maintaining the position too challenging then place your feet on a chair or wall to help you keep them off the ground initially and progress as you get better. Child’s Pose Breathing: Anyone familiar with yoga will have seen this one. The child’s pose is done by sitting back on your heels with your toes flat on the ground, knees tucked, heels on your butt, chest tucked into your knees and your hands extended overhead along the floor. This position allows you to close off your ribs with your knees and force really helps to force air into the lower back and stretch your spinal muscles with each breath. Getting into this major flexed position may be a challenge for some but if you persevere it will not only help your breathing patterns but also help your posture get back into line. The value of these drills is so great that just by spending 5 minutes each day practicing them will have a positive effect on your body and mind. Rottingdean Treasure Hunt
Treasure Hunt in Rottingdean Tax dodging was such a problem for revenue collectors in the Georgian era that it incurred increasingly severe penalties, enough to make any modern accountant blanche if not faint clean away. In those days, 'armed smuggling' or 'shooting at a revenue officer' were hangable offences. Unlike today, organised gangs furtively collected their duty free goods at night on secluded beaches. Fiercely protective of their interests, it was not unknown for these renegades to resort to murder if anyone threatened their lucrative livelihood. Coastguards, excise men and suspected informants were all at risk. There was too much at stake and a coarse rope around your neck (execution was by strangulation) or transportation to the colonies, was hardly an appealing retirement plan. This perilous but highly profitable trade, is celebrated annually by coastal heritage group Rottingdean Smugglers. Each December, roads are closed and for one fiery night, organised mayhem descends on their village. Torchlit processions, pirate drummers, fireworks and elaborate costumes, attract thousands of spectators.
The self-funded group, which boasts 300 extrovert members, is now going a step further by offering authentic 'period contraband' in a smuggler themed hunt around their atmospheric streets. Hunters pay for a scroll of hints, if they can piece together a random series of clues, it will reveal the location of tokens, each representing a typical smuggled cargo 'hoard'. Prizes include eight pieces of silver (get it?), brandy and pirate rum. Rottingdean Smugglers Treasure Hunt 11am Saturday 16 November 2013

Instead of buying something that would be another forgotten item in a cupboard, you could help your loved one to feel better in themselves and have healthier skin with a relaxing treatment. Who ever you are thinking about I have a range of vouchers that cover treatments such as: ● ● ● ● ●
Face Lift Massage - £20 Organic Facial - £35 Luxury Organic Facial - £45 limited offer. Normally £65 Cold Laser Facial - £75 Indian Head Massage - £30.
If you want to mix and match any of these treatments please call me or take a look at my website: www.antiaging-therapy.co.uk. Of course you could just treat yourself and help yourself to feel and look great throughout the winter months by booking a block of treatments. I look forward to hearing from you!
