Sue Nunn Sculptor Born in the Kent countryside, I have been involved in image-making all of my life. I studied Fine Art/sculpture at Gloucestershire University. I love to work in my studio at home, which looks over gardens and big skies, in spite of being in central Brighton. I have been woodcarving since the great hurricane of 1987 threw lots of free wood onto the streets. My father was a carpenter and I grew up with the comforting smell of wood. In 1987 I still had two of his old chisels and thought I would give carving a try. I continue to work with storm felled wood or reclaimed timber. In carving, it is good to feel part of a tradition that spans the centuries and cultures. I love watching the grain move as I carve, like waves on the sea. My work is figurative, perhaps with an early medieval style. I love Michelangelo's later looser works, eg “The Captives”, also Henry Moore's early “Mother and Child” works. I particularly like the raw emotionalism of Kathe Kollwitz, a late 19 century Prussian “artist of the people” who represented the poor and dispossessed in wonderful drawings and woodcuts. I am fascinated by the human face, and by the tenderness of nature.

Over the years I have worked on several large scale public commissions. My nearest publicly sited work is a group of carvings in the Millenium Garden, Chiddingly, East Sussex. The four main figures represent a variety of influences. Old Man Winter is based on a picture of Leo Tolstoy- I was reading War and Peace at the time. This group of sculptures is easily found, leading off the church car park, always open to the public. From 24 Nov to 7 Dec some of my work will be on exhibition in the foyer of the Jubilee Library, Brighton city centre, open daily. Called “City Icons”, these gilded oak relief carvings, made with reclaimed timber, use the traditional format of an icon, while reflecting moments of contemporary city life. I plan to be at the exhibition as much as possible, to discuss ideas and techniques. You can also contact me via my website and Blog: www.suenunnartist.co.uk suenunnartist.blogspot.com

It grows quickly in a spiral shape, is easy to harvest and was used as a food source by the Aztecs. Nutrition: B-complex vitamins, minerals, proteins, gammalinolenic acid and anti-oxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin E, trace elements and a number of unexplored bioactive compounds. Rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc. Spirulina is considered safe for human consumption supported by its long history of use as food source and its favourable safety profile in animal studies. However, rare cases of side-effects in human have been reported. Quality control in the growth and process to avoid contamination is mandatory to guarantee the safety of products. Adding Spirulina to your Diet: It is best to start with small doses in smoothies or juice, though most people prefer capsules as they cannot tolerate the taste of the powder. Local History - Part 30 Mike Laslett

Roedean School

On Heritage Open Day 2014 a small group of us enjoyed an excellent guided tour of the school, for which I must thank archivist Jackie Sullivan and her colleagues. For those of you unable to afford the boarding fees of £33,000 a year, here is a cheaper way of discovering something of the foremost girl’s school in England. The school was founded by three of the Lawrence sisters at their home in Wimbledon Park in 1885. They then moved to a collection of houses in Sussex Square and Lewes Crescent, Kemp Town, finally building a new school on 18 acres of open land in 1898. The architect of this Grade II listed school, Sir John Simpson, also designed the original Wembley Stadium so perhaps Roedean’s twin towers are not a surprising feature. The original buildings are a fine example of the arts and crafts movement. During the war the girls were evacuated to Keswick in the Lake District so that the premises could be used as the military training establishment HMS Vernon. The school’s motto “Honneur aux digne,“ if said quickly, sounds like “Honour Roedean!”

The chapel, which is approached by attractive cloisters, has windows by many famous artists including Morris & Co. and C.E.Kempe, from nearby Ovingdean.

The art room is almost unchanged and enjoys a wonderful north light. George Watts and Edward Burne Jones contributed to the design. Part of it is decorated by tiles made by former pupils in the 1930’s. In the corner is the original solid fuel stove, which may no longer be used, but shows the gates of heaven & hell and other scenes.

The highlight of our tour was to discover the tunnel leading to the beach and to descend 144 steps to the undercliff walk, near the Marina. When first opened in 1910, the tunnel led directly onto the rocky foreshore. The girls would have been encouraged to descend the tunnel, take a vigorous swim, then climb back up 144 steps to the school.

Let Them Entertain You Part 7

Christmas and New Year Parties Whether you have been charged with organising a Christmas bash for your business and its employees, a festive gathering for family and friends, or a New Year’s Eve party for your venue or club, there’s still time to get things organised. Saltdean based entertainment agency First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd has already helped many local businesses, venues and individuals alike as Christmas celebrations and the Office Party Season draws ever closer. But even now, it’s still not too late for you to put together a great Festive Celebration of your own. So what types of entertainment are most popular as Christmas & New Year’s Eve fare, and what tips are there for creating a successful event? We asked the experts ...

For more no obligation advice or to book entertainment for your Christmas or New Year Party, contact First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd. Call Free: 0800 2707 567

“There is a vast amount of choice available for Christmas entertainment, but traditionally there are certain elements that fit the bill perfectly, which we are asked for time and time again”, explains Chris Neilson, Artistic Director at First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd. “These range from Discos, Pianists, Swing Singers, Magicians and Bands, through to Tribute Acts, Harpists, Firework Displays and Caricaturists.”

Some performers and artists often have what is referred to as a “Christmas Set”, which means that some of their act, if booked for a Christmas party, will have a festive theme. For example, discos will play seasonal “floor fillers” and well loved Christmas songs, pianists can switch from background music to a festive party sing-a-long as the evening progresses, and magicians as you would expect, always have something special up their sleeves! Regardless of the type of entertainment however, the one thing that everyone is looking for these days is quality and of course, good value for money. In this case, rather than dividing your party budget rigidly between competing elements, we suggest dividing it in order of priority, remembering that without music or entertainment, a party is just a group of people in the same room! Finally, if you are holding a ticketed charity or fund raising Christmas Dinner or New Year Party, having professional entertainment on board is likely to attract more guests, allows you the ability to charge more per head, and in doing so, increases the percentage going to the good cause.

Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch update Have you noticed the new NHW Street signs in your area? Because of our successful bid for funding from the PCC Katy Bourne's Community Funding we have been able to arrange with B&H Council for 25 NHW Signs to be put on lamposts in most of the roads leading into the three Villages of West Saltdean, Rottingdean and Ovingdean. We are now in consultation with Lewes Council for signs to be erected in East Saltdean. These signs indicate to unwanted visitors like distraction burglars, scammer or car thieves the message that our community is one to be avoided! (This doesn't help if residents continue to leave garages and cars unlocked!!) Junior Neighbourhood Watch Receiving the funding has meant that we can now start to undertake several exciting projects. We will keep you up to date with these projects. At the moment, in addition to the signage we are half way through our first venture into Junior Neighbourhood Watch at Saltdean Primary School. This comprises of a six week after school club where year 6 pupils, through games, role play, art etc are shown ways of keeping themselves and their community safe and gives them an understanding

of the role of NHW. At the end of the sessions the school and the children will be presented with a framed certificate by PCC Katy Bourne and Chief Superintendent Neville Kemp. It is not only the children who are enjoying this we are all having fun!! We are planning to extend JNHW to other schools in the area in the future. What can you do to help! We are pleased, but not complacent, that Saltdean, Rottingdean and Ovingdean has one of the lowest crime figures in the county. We believe this is in a large part due to NHW! With Police cutbacks etc. they value what we are able to do and we work very closely with them. However, if we can recruit more co-ordinators in streets that at present are not part of our scheme, and recruit more members, we could see even better results!! For just ÂŁ1 donation per household you will be helping not just yourself but also your community - where else can you get such value for only ÂŁ1!! If you would like more information about the role of a co-ordinator or a member please contact Linda Hood, Secretary 01273 306441/nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.co.uk

Local Lions group in action

Rottingdean Smugglers Night 6th December 2014 Early each December a rebellious crew in Rottingdean form to reclaim the present day with a rejuvenation of the past with its tradition and heritage. Defying modern living, the shortening nights and worsening elements with the summer only a distant memory, for one night only, Rottingdean High Street is returned to the sixteenth century, courtesy of the Smugglers. A night of music fun and celebrations is enjoyed. Raising funds for charity with such unorthodoxy, one organisation comes immediately to mind that can dovetail so well into such a night – the one and only Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions. The Rottingdean Smugglers Night celebrates Rottingdean’s historic past with a close to the edge, noisy, fantasy filled evening of bonfires and services of commemoration to Christmas. The night looks towards the approaching winter solstice with an evening of fire, colourful costumes, drum beating and fireworks with plenty of seasonal fayre. By their own admission it is ‘a hybrid night of noise and mayhem.’ The villagers take over the street for a few hours with the motorcar banished leaving room for processions, carol services and a return to an intimate history that can be found all round the village. The climax of the evening is the spectacular firework display held on the beach. http://www.rottingdeansmugglers.co.uk The Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions get involved by organising a Lions Christmas Auction in The White Horse from 8pm. Last year this auction was held with lots provided by local traders and others. In 2013 the bidders did the Lions proud with over £1,350 raised. The Lions are hoping that they will at least match last year’s success this December. Moreover, they would like to thank everyone that provided a lot last year and they were very grateful to the enthusiastic bidders. The Lions hope you will all be as supportive this year. The Christmas Auction is organised by the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club with all proceeds going to support local charities and

community projects, in particular a Christmas lunch for senior citizens. If you would like to provide a lot (a new item please) for this year’s auction please see contact details listed below. For further details on the local Lions please see their website or contact: info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk or 08458 339617. http://www.rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk

Christmas Arts at the Crypt Gallery 22-30 November Daily 10am - 4.30pm. Sunday opening at 11am Christmas will soon be upon us and many of us will be starting to gather gifts for our friends and family. The Christmas Arts @ Crypt Gallery has become a very popular place to find those unusual and original gifts as well as a wide range of stocking fillers which will delight our loved ones on Christmas morning. Seaford has a wide range of talented, creative people who work all year round to produce high quality goods for this show and in recent years we know that some of you return to see and buy from those who have become personal favourites. Once again this year we are joined by a number of new artists from further afield whose work is also highly appealing. We have over the past 8 years established a reputation for providing innovative, quality goods which are reasonably priced. This year there is as usual a wide variety of goods which will delight us all. For those who enjoy visual art, there will be contemporary designs, painting, prints and cards by well-known Sussex artists, acrylic designs on wood and canvas, as well as framed prints of local scenes and advent calendars. Photography and pastel art offers an alternative choice for those looking for something different. There will be a unique range of textiles including hand printed silk gifts such as lampshades, boxes and bangles also hand dyed silk and woven scarves. Other textile artists will provide their ever popular handbags with beautiful beading and stitching, felted

jewellery, Shambala bracelets, knitted bags, gloves and socks, as well as lovely hand painted jute bags and dressing up items for children. Jewellery is always a popular gift. This year we have five jewellers all with very different styles and using a range of different materials including sterling silver, antique silver cutlery, semi precious stones, crystals and pearls of contemporary design, buttons, beads and enamelling. Four local paper crafters have worked all year to showcase their mixed media jewellery, notebooks and other paper based gifts. There will be a variety of ceramics, hand thrown and painted pottery for home and garden as well as hand crafted wooden items. We are very pleased to welcome a local artist whose specialty is stained glass which will bring a new dynamic to our fair. As you can see, there will most definitely be something for everyone. There will be a plethora of beaded, sparkly, glitzy Christmas decorations created by many of the exhibition’s makers. We are delighted that the ever popular Jaju Beans and Leaves and will have gift boxes of their teas and coffees. You will as usual be able to take a break from shopping in our ‘café’ area where you can enjoy delicious homemade cakes and a hot drink. We look forward to seeing you there.

Badgers Tennis Club

Tennis Club serves up a Party Ace Badgers Tennis Club in the heart of Kemp Town is serving up a new venture which is bound to be a big hit with anyone planning a special party. Set in beautiful gardens in Church Place, the club is the perfect setting for a wide range of events and parties including Christmas, New Year celebrations, birthdays, and wedding receptions. The purpose-built clubhouse has a fully licensed bar and can cater for up to 70 people. There are kitchen facilities, a background/PA music system, party lighting and plenty of room for a band or DJ. When the weather is fine, guests can also make use of the pretty gardens and terraces. Club member Carol Wickens explained: “The clubhouse really is a fantastic place to hold a party and can look really spectacular. “It’s a very versatile space and of course the setting is really idyllic. We can help and advise on all aspects from catering to arranging special bar requests and we also have contacts with local bands and DJs.” The clubhouse also has facilities for the disabled and is also an ideal space for meetings and is already used by several community organisations. Children’s birthday celebrations have proved extremely popular and there is the option of using the tennis courts for a party with a difference. “The best advice is to come along and have a look at the facilities, the gardens and the lovely setting,” added Carol.
