Lucy Parker I grew up in Bognor Regis and went to Sussex University to study Biology. My mother took a dim view of art schools even though she was an artist herself. But you can't keep a good artist down, so after university I went to Brighton Polytechnic to study illustration. I illustrated computer games in the early eighties, which involved making Pac-man look interesting, and in 1995 I joined the Fiveways Artist group. I have exhibited in the Brighton Festival Open Houses nearly every year since then, as well as having exhibitions in the US, the Netherlands, France and of course, Sussex. After my children were born I became an art teacher. I have taught all over the Brighton area in the past 25 years. I love teaching, and enjoy taking people the journey I have been on developing traditional skills in most media.

switched to oil painting the landscape there and I am currently having a deep love affair Cadmium lemon yellow which is perfect for painting the marsh grass around Waquoit Bay. I do hope they don't ban it. Lucy Parker teaches at the Whiteway Centre in Rottingdean. You can see her more of her work at www.lbparker.com

On the advice of my mother to do life drawing a lot, I found a passion for it. I treat it like artistic aerobics. I developed a style of watercolour painting of the nude after going to Graham Dean's Re-inventing the Watercolour workshop many moons ago. It involved drawing directly onto handmade Khadi paper with tube watercolours and then throwing water at it. This makes for incredibly strong tones and colours and its unpredictability I find very exciting. I keep a sketchbook on the go all the time, particularly when on holiday and always come home inspired to develop my sketches into paintings. I am mad about Venice and try and go every year. I have been known to go a little bit Goth finding inspiration from Philip Jackson's marvellous sculptures of Venetian figures and placing them in gloomy situations in Venice to add to the sinister feeling I was also lucky enough to marry an American whose mother had a house in Cape Cod. The light and the colours there are a constant inspiration. Recently I have

Fake Facebook Pages The scammers have, unsurprisingly, cashed in on the rise in popularity of social media, and Facebook in particular. You may have heard in September of the couple who were left devastated after finding a "man with a van" via Facebook who subsequently disappeared with all of their belongings. They said: "He was recommended to us via a friend on Facebook and we checked out his page because he had a removal site and all the reviews were brilliant, five star, there were approximately 30 to 40 reviews.” These days we go online to find the services that we need. And as Facebook garners more and more users so this social media site is becoming a search engine in its own right. So how do you know if a Facebook Page is genuine or not? As with all scams, they can be difficult to spot. The above example had an image of the man, was

recommended and had reviews. The mistake made here was to look no further than Facebook. If you are going to employ a business, even if they have been recommended to you by someone else, check them out in as many places as you can. Do they have a website? If not, do they have a physical address? A telephone number or email address alone is not worthy of your trust. If they do have an address check it out online. If they have a company name, check it out online. And whilst reviews of genuine companies can be of use remember that anyone can make up a handful of reviews and upload them. We don’t like to spread mistrust but it is always better to take some time and do your research before handing over your money – a reputable company will have more than just a Facebook page and some glowing reviews.

Osteopathy tips

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Plantar Fasciitis Also known as Plantar Fasciopathy, Policeman's Heal, Runner's Heel; thickening of the plantar fascia, one of the most common causes of heel pain, estimated to affect 10% of general population. Thickening can be due to recent damage or injury, or an accumulation of smaller injuries over the years. It can be extremely painful and once chronic it can prove difficult to treat successfully. Other pathologic disorders can mimic the symptoms and clinical presentation of this disorder. Anatomy: The plantar fascia is the thick, broad band of connective tissue supporting the arch underneath the sole of the foot. Its elastic, collagen fibers run from the calcaneum (heel bone) forward to the heads of the metatarsal bones, which join the toes to the mid-foot. It has a critical role in normal mechanical function of the foot, undergoing tension during weight bearing and elongating in the contact phase of gait (walking). It is closely related to the achilles tendon, which joins the gastrocnemius (calf) muscle to the heel and is important in proprioception and motor co-ordination. Symptoms: Pain in the bottom of the foot, especially on the heel bone. It is generally worse first thing in the morning, when standing up after long sitting and when standing or walking, particularly in unsupportive shoes. Causes: Repetitive strain on the fascia from a new form of exercise or sudden increase in intensity of exercise, especially high impact; long distance runners using tartan (synthetic all weather) track more than 25% of the time; regularly standing for several hours; a change in shoes, i.e. suddenly switching from regular high-heels to flats; wearing shoes with weak arch supports and thin soles. Having flat feet or very high arches, uneven leg length, unusual foot position or tight achilles tendon; being overweight. Medical conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis.

tive for chronic pain associated with plantar fasciitis that did not respond to other conservative treatment. Surgery: fasciotomy (percutaneous latticed plantar) minimally invasive clinic procedure under local anaesthetic. Isolated proximal medial gastrocnemius (calf muscle) release is a simple, reliable procedure, providing far better results than conventional partial proximal fasciotomy). Osteopathic/Manual Management: Adjusting feet and ankle bones, soft tissue and myofascial techniques, stretching, dry needling, taping, orthotics, home rehabilitation exercises; attention to back and neck due to effects of long term limping. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Diagnosis: Based on medical history, symptoms, examination and pressing on the sole of the foot. Shear wave elastography shows (stiffness) elasticity of the plantar fascia, which decreases with age (thickness increases) and in patients with plantar fasciitis. Gluten Sensitivity: musculoskeletal problems can be related. Treatment: Medical interventions include anti-inflammatory pain medication, ultrasound, steroid injections and surgery after 6 months of failed conservative treatments. Orthotics (insoles), stretching, taping, dry needling based on myofascial meridians and manual therapy are also helpful. Injections: Corticosteroid more effective when guided by ultrasound than palpation; associated with increased risk of plantar fascia rupture; needs further research. Platelet-rich plasma more effective and durable than cortisone in chronic recalcitrant cases. Intramuscular botulinum toxin (Botox) in gastroc-soleus (calf) muscles with plantar fascia stretching exercises better than corticosteroid. Hyaluronan into fascia, due to its high concentration of hyaluronan. Cryoultrasound Therapy: could be efficient for chronic cases. Shock Wave Therapy: safe, effective treatment for plantar fasciitis and chronic pain symptoms. More effective when combined for plantar fasciitis and gastroc-soleus (calf muscle) trigger points; more research needed. Radiofrequency: into plantar fascia during endoscopy can be satisfactory treatment. Radiofrequency calcaneal nerve ablation was effec-

Local History - Part 42

Mike Laslett

We Shall Remember Them

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, that is, at 11am on the 11 of November, a two minute silence is traditionally held in England to remember our war dead. There are many local connections with this realm of Remembrance. It is commonly known that Rudyard Kipling, who lived at The Elms in Rottingdean from 1897-1902, was devastated by the death of his only son John during World War I. He had encouraged his son to go to France, only for him to die in the trenches at The Battle of Loos after a month. One result of this was his involvement in the War Graves Commission which ensured proper memorials for our fallen troops from around the Commonwealth. You will have seen the grassed gardens of remembrance with their rows of spotless white gravestones, especially in France. They are cleaned annually by The War Graves Commission. The headstones all have standard upper case lettering designed by MacDonald Gill. Born in Brighton, he was the younger brother of Eric Gill, one of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts movement. Such an area with almost 400 graves can be seen in the Brighton City Cemetery in Bear Road. It has a Cross of Sacrifice, like all such areas with more than 40 war graves. The stone cross represents the faith of the majority of the dead, while the sword represents the military character of the cemetery. Designed by Sir Reginald Bloomfield, the Cross of Sacrifice, has words from Ecclesiasticus inscribed at the base; “Their Name Liveth for Evermore.” These words were chosen by Kipling with the intention of suiting those of all faiths and none respectively. You can tell this particular Cross is in Brighton from the seagull perched on top!

Cemeteries with more than 1000 burials typically have a Stone of Remembrance, also inscribed "Their Name Liveth for Evermore.” The Stone was designed by Edwin Lutyens who also designed the Cenotaph in Whitehall. For the latter, Kipling chose the inscription, “The Glorious Dead.” Lutyens also designed the rear wing and the gardens of The Grange in Rottingdean. These are now primarily the site of the School and The Whiteway Centre, but you can still see his gates in the remaining part of the garden. An adjacent area in the City Cemetery remembers the dead from St Dunstan’s. There is a group memorial for those cremated and individual graves for those buried here. These graves are almost identical to the War Graves of white Portland stone. Finally it would be wrong not to mention the graves of some German pilots who died in the Brighton area after being shot down in both wars and have also been marked in the same fashion

Neighbourhood Watch

Winter is Here! Evenings are getting dark earlier and one of the first things a burglar will look for is whether the house looks occupied or not. Therefore it is important to remember to change the timings on your automatic timer switches and endeavour to make the house look as if someone is there. The last thing you want to do is arrive home from work to find someone was there before you!!! Do you have a side or back gate? Make sure you have a lock fitted and keep it locked! One member had their tree stripped of plums. It isn't a pleasant feeling knowing that someone has been on your property. Make it harder for this to happen! We would like to alert you to types of fraudulent activity and scams which can take various forms but are designed to elicit money from the potential victim. Recently we received three reports from members who had been contacted by phone and the caller said they were from Talk Talk. They were extremely convincing and unfortunately personal details were given on two occasions. We have also had several reports about email scams from Pay Pal and Virgin Media and the old chestnut "There is a problem with your computer". It seems our area is once again being targeted so please be aware and NEVER give personal details over the phone and be vigilant about email scams. Always report incidents to the Police and Action

Fraud of all post, email and social media frauds and seek telephone preference advice from your phone provider to block numbers. Remember in some cases if the offer seems too good to be true - then it is!! SPEED WATCH We have been active over the last couple of months with the speed gun on local roads and are hoping that our presence will make our communities safer places to live. To enable us to be seen more regularly we would like more volunteers. CAN YOU HELP? Training is given and if you would like more information please contact us and help with this worthwhile project. PCSO Rosie Bearfield-Smith. Rosie has left Sussex Police and joined Surrey Police as a Police Constable. We would like to thank her for her support of NHW in East Saltdean. In her absence PCSO Chris Marchant and Jules Nicholson will continue to cover the area and can be contacted in the normal way via the Sussex Police website or 101. Please remember to report all incidents however small. For more information about NHW please contact Secretary Linda Hood, 01273 306441 email nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.co.uk

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having myofascial release, Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices passionately that everyone should understand how it works, unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these why generally women get more lower back problems then treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can selfwith fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) care in the future and when they have a pain they understand so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the why it's happening, and what they can do about it, lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder more about myofascial release and myself please go to: and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Badgers Tennis Club

Game, Set and Cash Tennis players from clubs around East Sussex smashed a fundraising target when they took to the courts to raise money for the NSPCC. More than 30 players gathered at Badgers Tennis Club in Kemptown for the annual charity tournament with over £1,000 being raised for the children’s charity. The annual NSPCC tournament has been running at Badgers for many years with players from clubs around the county, including Preston Park and Lindfield, coming together to raise money and awareness of the charity.

For more information on hiring the clubhouse please contact Mark on 07720 409580 or markbmail8@gmail.com. Make sure to mention The Deans. Check out the website for more details of what is on offer www.badgerstennis.com or email info@badgerstennis.com.

Russell Squire, the NSPCC’s Community Fundraising Manager for Sussex said: “Thousands of children from Brighton and Hove contact ChildLine each year. There are also hundreds of calls to the NSPCC Helpline from people in this area who have concerns about a child. “Across the UK we find that nearly half of this type of call is serious enough to pass on to police and social services. These are just two of the services that the NSPCC provides to children wherever they are in the UK. “Thank you so much to Badgers Tennis Club for holding yet another successful tournament to help children." Badgers Tennis Club is offering readers of The Deans special rates for the hire of its fantastic clubhouse - the perfect setting for Christmas and New Year parties. Set in beautiful gardens in the heart of Kemp Town, the purpose-built clubhouse has a fully licensed bar and can cater for up to 70 people. There are kitchen facilities, a background/PA music system, party lighting and plenty of room for a band or DJ. When the weather is fine, guests can also make use of the pretty gardens and terraces. It is also an ideal space for meetings and is already used by several community organisations as well as a local yoga group. Of course the club – often described as Kemp Town’s secret garden - is also keen to hear from new playing members with all standards welcome. There are club afternoons on Saturday and Sundays starting at 2pm. Just turn up!

Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions

News from the Lions This month we have news on training for the lifesaving defibrillator equipment that was launched by Brighton’s mayor back in September. Also, we mention our involvement in the Rottingdean Smugglers Night with our fun Christmas Auction. Training for Rottingdean’s Defibrillator As we were pleased to announce last month, the Parish Council, the Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions Club and the Village Fair have contributed to the installation of a Defibrillator machine, which can treat the acute symptoms of a heart attack, in Rottingdean. This machine has been mounted at a convenient height by the door of the Village Hall in Park Road and can be accessed by ringing the Ambulance Service on 999, asking for an Ambulance for the patient and also the entry code for the Defibrillator. The machine will "talk through" the instructions for use so that anyone can use it safely. However, there will be two training sessions for those who would wish to learn more about the procedure. These are to be held in the Main Hall of the Whiteway Centre, Whiteway Lane at 7.00pm on Wednesday 9th December and Tuesday 12th January. You are all welcome. If you would like to attend a training session, please contact us below for the latest details. On behalf of the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions, I would like to thank once again all involved in providing this life saving facility. The use of the Defibrillator was officially launched by the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Cllr Lynda Hyde on Sunday 13th September. She was joined by representatives of the Lions, Parish Council and Village Fair Committee. Lions Christmas Auction at Rottingdean Smugglers Night On Saturday 5 December, during the Rottingdean Smugglers Night celebrations the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions get involved by organising a Lions

Christmas Auction in The White Horse from 8 pm. Last year this auction was held with lots provided by local traders and others. In 2014 the bidders did the Lions proud with over £1342 raised. The Lions are hoping that they will at least match last year’s success this December. Moreover, they would like to thank everyone that provided a lot last year and they were very grateful to the enthusiastic bidders. The Lions hope you will all be as supportive this year. The Christmas Auction is organised by the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club with all proceeds going to support local charities and community projects, in particular a Christmas lunch for senior citizens. If you would like to provide a lot (a new item please) for this year’s auction please see contact details listed below. As always, the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions have had a busy year raising funds and providing service and supporting charities in the local community – let’s hope this will continue for a long time to come. The Rottingdean Fayre and Saltdean Gala are good examples, whilst being immensely successful events, are labour intensive and voluntary help at these events is always welcome. If you know a Lion please have a chat with them if you would like to help out at any of our events. Or you can use the contact details listed below to ask for details on helping out – your offers would be most welcome. If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities, or would like to book a place on the forthcoming defibrillator training, please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. Lady of Lourdes PTA

Playground development appeal Our Lady of Lourdes School desperately wishes to improve its playground facilities and are embarking on plans to renovate their run-down tarmac playgrounds and an un-used ‘wild-green area’ and transform them into a stimulating and physically engaging space for the children to play, and provide much needed facilities to enable their participation in sports and physical activities.

What we have... Currently the play facilities consist of a small Infant playground and a larger Junior playground, both have old-deteriorated tarmac surfaces with no play structures or access to grass. There is also a large un-used ‘wild green area’ of land, adjacent to the Junior Playground, currently un-safe to use (which we hope to develop into an area that all the children can access and benefit from). Infant Playground

What we hope to achieve... Our vision is to re-surface the playgrounds and provide a safe, physically and emotionally stimulating outdoor play-environment that will enable all the children to engage in a variety of sports and activities and create a more positive play-time experience, which will ultimately enhance their overall well-being, education and school-life experience. Some of the improvements we hope to achieve include: a designated games area with playground markings for football and other ball games, age-appropriate play &/or climbing structures in both play areas, access to a grassed area and creation of a ‘school garden’.

Junior Playground

“We are all striving to give our children a learning environment which provides all that they need to succeed, both in their learning and in their future life - one that will nurture their potential and encourage them to be the best that they can be. Playtime is an extremely important part of a child’s school day. It is a time when they develop their social skills and learn how to be with each other, as well as develop their physical abilities. We want to provide them with a playground and school environment which allows them the opportunity to develop socially, physically, emotionally as well as academically.” (Mr Beverton, Headmaster at Our Lady of Lourdes School) Can you help?... Due to the large amount of funds needed to achieve our vision, the School is unable to fund such a project without substantial financial assistance. Therefore the PTA at Our Lady of Lourdes School have launched a ‘Playground Development Appeal’ and are hoping to raise the necessary funds through both individual donations and personal fundraising, organising school-fundraising events as well as applying for external grants and funding.

Crypt Gallery

Christmas Arts at the Crypt 21st – 29th NOVEMBER DAILY 10.30AM – 4.30PM – Sunday opening at 11am Once again we are happy to announce that the Christmas Arts @ the Crypt fair will be providing the opportunity to purchase some of those more unusual and original Christmas gifts as well as a wide range of stocking fillers which will delight our loved ones on Christmas morning. Seaford has a wide range of talented, creative people who work all year round to produce high quality goods for this show and in recent years we know that some of you return to see and buy from those who have become personal favourites. Once again this year we are joined by a number of new artists from further afield whose work is also highly appealing. We have over the past 9 years established a reputation for providing innovative, quality goods which are reasonably priced. This year there is as usual a wide variety of goods which will delight us all. To learn more about the artists and see examples of their work you can go to Arts and Crafts at the Crypt on our new Face book page.

using a range of different materials including sterling silver, antique silver cutlery, semi precious stones, crystals and pearls of contemporary design, buttons, beads and enamelling. Local paper crafters have worked all year to showcase their mixed media jewellery, notebooks and other paper based gifts. There will be a variety of ceramics, hand thrown and painted pottery for home and garden as well as hand crafted wooden boxes made from Black Walnut and Canary wood. We are very pleased to welcome the return of local artists whose specialities are a mix of fused art glass jewellery, objects and stained glass. There will most definitely be something for everyone.

For those who enjoy visual art, there will be contemporary designs, painting, prints and cards by well-known Sussex artists, acrylic designs on wood and canvas, as well as framed prints of local scenes. Photography and pastel art offers an alternative choice for those looking for something different. There will be a unique range of textiles including hand dyed silk and woven scarves, knitwear, colourful handbags in recycled fabrics, beading and stitching, felted jewellery and Shambala bracelets. Other textile artists will be bringing their own designs on small items of clothing, T-towels, cushions and lovely hand painted jute bags and dressing up items for children.

There will be a plethora of beaded, sparkly, glitzy Christmas decorations and bunting created by many of the exhibition’s makers. We are delighted that the ever popular Jaju Beans and Leaves will have gift boxes of their teas and coffees and you will as usual be able to take a break from shopping in our ‘café’ area where you can enjoy delicious homemade cakes and a hot drink.

Jewellery is always a popular gift. This year we have several jewellers all with very different styles and

St Margaret’s Christmas preparations

Preparations for Christmas begin early at St Margaret’s St Margaret’s Church, Rottingdean is preparing for our second Christmas Tree Festival on the weekend of Friday to Sunday 4, 5 & 6th December 2015. In the Church, there will be around 40 decorated trees; which will be enchanting and magical. Some trees will be traditional, others more modern – some glitzy, some will make you smile, some colourful, and unusual. Each will be amazing in their own way, to make this an entertaining family event in the run up to Christmas. Last years event raised £5,842 for the Martletts Hospice, and over 700 adults and children visited the festival. This year proceeds will go to the new Macmillan Horizon Cancer Centre in Brighton and St Margaret’s Church, Rottingdean. The festival is being organised by parshioner Duncan Ward who said “We are involving local school children, individuals, groups, organisations, and businesses. Entries for decorated trees are being accepted, please see our website www.stmargaret.org.uk for details.” The festival will round with an organ concert with John Mann on Sunday at 4pm.

Refreshments will be available during the Festival in St Margaret’s Cottage. Further information can be found on www.stmargaret.org.uk

The Festival will be open to the public from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December 2015, at the Church on the Green, Rottingdean.
