Welcome

Welcome to the November Edition The old saying that ‘every dog has their day’ certainly came true for a group of dogs who had a fantastic time at the end of season event at Saltdean Lido, as seen in our cover photo this month. We have a packed edition for November, with lots of news and events in the lead up to Christmas. We have successfully fitted everything in, and I just wanted to point out that our Events and Announcements section is looking a bit sparse at the moment so if you would like a mention of your upcoming event or group this is the place to put it. Our deadline for copy for the December edition will be Wednesday 15 of November, for our January edition it is Tuesday 12 December.

Laptop Terminology 5 Laptop Terms You Need To Understand Before You Buy. When you decide you need to buy a new laptop you can find yourself bamboozled by the jargon, making the entire process ever so foggy. We’ve tried to help by compiling a list of the basic laptop parts, what they mean, and how it will affect your buying process. The Battery: The question here is how long will that battery last for? If you are needing a laptop that you can take out with you then a longer battery life will be important to you. The Brain: A laptop does have one – sort of. This is known as the processor, or the CPU, and they come in many different varieties. Processor speed is measured in GHZ and the larger the number of GHZ the faster the computer. You may also hear Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, and i7. The differences all refer to speed, performance and price. The Memory: The RAM is what your computer uses to store temporary information while you are using the computer. Generally, these are set to in a prebuilt system and something you don’t have to worry

too much about. Our personal recommendation is that you should have a minimum of 8GB. The Storage System: This is the Hard Drive and is rated by size and speed. The hard drive is where you will store all your files whether it be music, films or word documents. As a guide point, a laptop that has a 7200 RPM SATA 100GB drive translates to being able to hold approximately 28,560 digital photos or up to 25,000 songs (MP3). The Size: Have you been offered the choice of a 15inch laptop? The “inches” refer to the laptop’s screen size and the measurements are taken diagonally. In addition, you need to consider the weight of the machine. For any further information, please do get in touch with us.

Pet Therapy at Clifden House A Noah’s ark of creatures visited leading dementia care centre in Seaford. As part of its ongoing pet therapy programme, Clifden House on Claremont Road welcomed a menagerie of pets, reptiles and small animals to include lizards, snakes, hedgehogs and rabbits. Nial Joyce of Clifden House said: “Research from the International Psychogeriatric Association highlighted that interaction with pets can lower blood pressure leading to reduced anxiety. Ultimately, this can improve behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.” Deena McCormack, activities coordinator at Clifden House said: “Everybody looks forward to our pet therapy sessions. These sessions are not only very interesting and engaging but also very therapeutic. “ Clifden House’s pet therapy sessions are varied and can include anything from ewes and guinea pigs to tortoises and hedgehogs. All residents are actively encouraged to engage with the animals. This produces some great laughs and interesting questions.” For information about CQC ‘good’ rated Dementia Care Centre visit www.clifdenhouse.co.uk Follow Clifden House on Facebook for the latest advice and news about dementia care.

Enid Bagnold Water colour for sale Early in October The Deans Magazine was contacted by Debora Connolly from the USA who thought that someone in the Deans area might be interested in an Enid Bagnold water colour she has for sale… Debora adds: Enid Bagnold “I inherited the painting from my fiancee that passed away in 2010. I am speculating here: Ms. Bagnold made the painting specifically for Ms. Katharine Hepburn because she starred in her play, ‘Matter of Gravity,’ my fiancee was Toby Grant who was the nephew of Ms. Katharine Hepburn, we lived together for 5 1/2 wonderful years in a small mill town called Oakridge, Oregon.” Enid Bagnold has featured in the Deans Magazine many times over the years, notably in editorial which appeared in June and July of 2012, in brief: In 1920, Enid Bagnold married Sir Roderick Jones, Chairman of Reuters, but continued to use her maiden name for her writing. They lived at North End House, Rottingdean, near Brighton (previously the home of Sir Edward Burne-Jones), the garden of which inspired her play, The Chalk Garden. Bagnold died at Rottingdean in 1981, aged 92, and is interred at St Margaret's churchyard

Anyone interested in buying the Enid Bagnold water colour should contact: Debora Connolly at tyke@efn.org or call her on 001-541-913-3260

Osteopathy tips

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Frozen Shoulder Also known as adhesive capsulitis, contracted shoulder or pitcher’s arm, is an extremely painful condition where the shoulder is partially or completely stiff and unmovable, affecting your ability to carry out everyday activities such as bathing, dressing, driving and sleeping comfortably. It usually comes on gradually, gets worse over a number of months and may improve with time, though can take several years. It is most common between ages 40-60, particularly in women.

Anatomy: The shoulder is a ball and socket joint; the end of the upper arm bone (humerus) sits in the socket of the shoulder blade (scapula). The lining of the shoulder joint, the capsule, is a flexible elastic structure allowing the shoulder’s huge range of motion. It is fully stretched when you raise your arm above your head and hangs down as a small pouch when the arm is lowered. In frozen shoulder this capsule and its ligaments becomes inflamed, swollen, thickened and contracted; normal elasticity is lost and there is less space for your upper arm bone in the joint. Pain and stiffness set in. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that control shoulder movements: supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis. Symptoms: Can vary from mild with little effect on daily activities to severe and possibly unable to move the shoulder at all. Stage 1: Freezing, shoulder starts to ache and can be painful on reaching out; often worse at night laying on affected shoulder. Can last 2-9 months. Stage 2: Frozen, increasing stiffness, pain decreases, range of motion more limited. Shoulder muscles may waste from lack of use. Can last 4-12 months. Stage 3: Thawing, gradually regaining movement, though not fully, pain reduces and able to do more tasks. Can last 12-42 months. Causes: Each person’s symptoms and causes may be slightly different, making it difficult to say what has caused the problem. Exact cause is unknown; may be caused by inflammation of shoulder joint and surrounding capsule, may lead to thick scar-like tissue forming in the capsule making it tight and restricting movement of the joint. It can develop alongside calcific tendonitis: where small amounts of calcium are deposited in the tendons of the shoulder or rotator cuff tear.

Risk factors include breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, stroke, thyroid disease, recent shoulder injury, fracture or surgery, lack of use, Dupuytrens contracture. Diagnosis: A medical practitioner will ask about symptoms and injuries that may have affected the shoulder, its effect on daily life and sleep, severity of pain and what affects pain; also related pains, other health conditions and medication you are taking. Examination of range of motion, moving shoulder in all directions compared with unaffected shoulder; pressure to parts of shoulder to determine where pain is most severe and what is causing it; look for swelling, bruising or muscle wasting. X-ray, ultrasound scan and MRI may be used to rule out other causes of pain such as rotator cuff tear or arthritis. Treatment: Physical therapy, pain killers, anti-inflammatories, corticosteroid injections, Arthroscopic Hydrodilatation under local anaesthetic: filling shoulder joint with fluid to break up scar tissue and free up the joint is more effective than simple injections, surgery: arthroscopic Capsular Release or Manipulation Under Anaesthetic. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Massage, manipulation, myofascial techniques on joint and soft tissues, stretching and strengthening, trigger point therapy, dry needling, strapping, home rehabilitation exercises, attention to postural and sleeping habits. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Local history - Part 66

The Brookside Harriers

I was recently given a worn anthology of Wordsworth’s poems. I was not especially excited about this donation to The Rottingdean Preservation Society Archives. However imagine my surprise on opening the book to find a letter written by Georgiana Burne- Jones, gifting the book to Maude Funnell. Wife of the painter Sir Edward Burne- Jones, Georgiana resided at North End House Rottingdean between 1880 and her death in 1920. Keen to encourage the working classes, she tried to get them to participate in local politics by standing for the newly created Parish Council and encouraged women in particular to take an interest in education and culture. Hence, she gave the book to Maude, although she admits “I have not read the whole of his works, or expect to do, so but here seem to be many that I love!”

In the photo they are standing at what is now the western side of Gorham Avenue with the Paddocks behind them. You can just make out a white area at the top right hand corner of the picture which is a small quarry at the top of Whiteway Lane. The Brookside Harriers, who probably chased foxes as well as hares, were once the finest pack of hounds in England. They were called the Brookside Harriers as they were first established at the Brooks in Lewes circa 1750. They then moved to various locations in the Lewes area before settling at kennels in Rottingdean known as the Paddocks, backing on to Dean Court Road. They still exist as residential dwellings in Gorham Avenue today. The days of the sporting gentleman who rode out three times a week between 4am and 10 am have long since gone. The period 1800 to 1820 saw the most famous Master of these Hounds: The Vicar, The Rev. Dr Thomas Hooker. Col. Moens quoted that Dr Hooker rode into his eighties but as he died aged 78 this is not accurate! Nonetheless his riding skills put him in a good position to ride as a lookout for village smugglers.

Georgina Burne-Jones

In the Burne-Jones Room at The Grange you can read the minutes of the Electric Light Company which record receiving a letter in which Georgiana complains that the light supplied in the morning is not as good as at night. However since she used to ask the best girl in the school to read to her due to her failing eyesight perhaps the fault lay with her? Idle curiosity made me wonder what we knew about the book’s recipient Maude Funnell. Sometimes I draw a blank but on this occasion, I struck gold! Maude and her brother Nelson were the children of Edmund Funnell the huntsman who ran the kennels of the Brookside Harriers in Rottingdean. John Funnell had been appointed Huntsman in 1869 and on his death in 1888 his third son Edmund succeeded him.

Maude Funnell

The Hunt passing Norton House and the pond

As Master he was succeeded by other Vicars, namely Arthur Thomas and Arthur Wynne, also by Harrison Carr, William Saxby and members of the Beard family. When the Beard family fortunes of several centuries were squandered by Steyning Beard the result was that everything had to be sold including the hounds which were bought by Ambrose Gorham the millionaire racehorse owner of Telscombe. He in turn sold the hounds to an American in 1915 and it was sadly Edmund Funnell’s last job to accompany them. Many thanks to the Wheeler family for donating the book and letter to the RPS archives. Mrs Wheeler was Maude’s neighbour in Neville Road for many years which is how the book came into her ownership and it is currently on display in the Grange entrance.

Neighbourhood Watch

Volunteering Rewarding not time consuming! A few years ago I became a member of Neighbourhood Watch. When I joined there wasn't a Contact Co-ordinator for my road so I volunteered to take on the role. I was happy to do this as I am very grateful for all the hard work that the NHW team do in our area and I wanted to do my bit and help. It's a very, very simple role indeed and it definitely isn't time consuming in the slightest. I was given the names and details of existing NHW members living in my road and have since obtained further members. I just simply forward any important information on to them which takes just a couple of minutes. I have a NHW Group set up on my email, meaning I can send a message to all my members with just one click! For those who aren't on email I get the three monthly newsletters photocopied free of charge at Fox & Sons in Rottingdean and deliver them when I am out and about or I sometimes get my two children to help as they enjoy being involved. I know people are often wary of becoming a volunteer as they presume they might have to attend committee meetings and that the role is a big commitment etc. but this isn't the case at all!! Being a Contact Co-ordinator is simply being a NHW member who spends a very short amount of time passing on important information received from the NHW Committee or the Police to a selected number of members.

Neighbourhood Watch Committee work so hard for our community and give up a lot of their time to help keep us and our homes safe, and to make our area is a wonderful place to live. This is why I am extremely happy to be involved, not only to help others but to say thank you to the people of NHW and to ensure that where I live remains safe and secure. Below is a list of roads without contact Co-ordinators. If your road is there please think hard about volunteering and get in touch with us for more information. A Day at the Seaside Autism Sussex Saltdean Community Charity (SCA Reg No 270950) hosted a group of inner city Brighton children to share the delights of Saltdean. The Trustees were struck by the fact that even though Brighton is a seaside city many children never experience a family day by the sea. Using funds from the Co-op local scheme we treated 15 children and their guardians to a swim in the Lido, fish and chips, play on the Oval and beach and entertainment from Mr Potty the Pirate. The Trustees worked with One Church and Chomp, Brighton based charities who support families in need. We are so fortunate in Saltdean it is good to share. The day was supported by South Coast Taxis, The Gift Shop, Saltdean Fish Bar, B&H Buses and of course The Co-Op. Hopefully we will be able to repeat the experience in 2018 and to quote Andy from One Church "make the summer" for other families. Thank you to all who support us through the Co-op scheme our next project is to collect and write down as a permanent record the memories of the seniors in our community. To support us go to www.coop.co.uk/ membership

Appeal for Witnesses On Wednesday 10 February 1943, a German Luftwaffe Dornier DO 217 plane was shot at and crashed, amidst thick fog, into the Coombe Farm field adjacent to Homebush Avenue in Saltdean, where it exploded, killing all four crew members. As a Saltdean resident with an interest in WW2 history, I am very interested in the incident. I am hoping to trace anybody who has any knowledge of the incident, as I am researching this for a book I am planning to write.

Hidden away in an industrial park in Peacehaven, is a gem of a discounted charity shop which has been open for a year this month! Autism Sussex, as the name suggests, helps enable people with an autism spectrum condition to receive the help and specialist support services they and their families need. This end of line charity shop warehouse stocks a wide range of high quality secondhand items ranging from bric-a-brac, clothes and books, to furniture and linen. They are the distribution hub for the other 5 shops located across the county. It is also the ‘last chance saloon’ for discounted furniture and other stock. It has become a friendly little community with regular customers, happy volunteers and always great music playing. Dogs are also welcome, well, encouraged in fact as manager Julie has said that she's made many a furry friend since they opened. If you want an enjoyable and relaxed shopping experience, it is definitely worth a visit. With stock rotating regularly, you never know what you’re going to find! There is also a delivery service and parking available. Once a month there is also a massive clearance sale where all clothes are only £1 and everything else is a reduced price for one day only, so keep an eye out or ask in store about it! Open from 10am -4pm Wednesday to Saturday and located at Unit E2 Hoyle Road, Peacehaven, BN10 8LW, just by the Trampoline Park and the Post Office. Donations are always welcome and you’d be helping a very worthy cause!

I would love to speak to anybody who remembers the incident in any capacity. This may be because you were there, you heard about it at the time or afterwards, or a relative has told you something about what happened. I am also interested in what life was like in Saltdean during the war. So if you have any information, however small, please contact me by email at matthew.ebeling.me@gmail.com or on my mobile on 07791 168847. Your local writer needs you! Toe Tal Footcare An introduction to Samantha De Rosa and her new Deans business Toe Tal Footcare Hello my name is Sam, and I have lived in Saltdean for most of my life, having attended both the local primary and secondary schools in the area. I love living by the sea and the sense of community that living in Saltdean gives me and my family. I am married with 2 children who are 17 and 14 years old.

Whilst living in Greece was both an amazing and special experience, I decided to return to the UK in 1994, and set up home once again in Saltdean. I secured a job working for BUPA Healthcare International, as a medical claims assessor, where I worked for 22years before being made redundant in 2015.

After leaving Bhasvic college I worked for a couple of years in local firm before deciding that I wanted to broaden my horizons and see more of the world. I chose Greece, a country I holidayed in as a child and had grown to love. I threw myself into the Greek culture and challenged myself to learn Greek which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I have been working with the elderly for the last couple of years and it is during this time that I realised that there was a real need for high quality foot health care. I studied and trained with the SMAE Institute, and I am now a fully qualified and insured foot health care practitioner accredited to the Queen Margaret University.

Two young residents, Etienne Narcisi (11 yrs) and Otega Hugbo (10yrs) have been cast as actor/dancers in the chorus. 'When I found out that I had been cast as Pinocchio, I was stunned. I literally ran around the house I was so excited. I still can't believe that I got the part. I am so excited for the first rehearsal and I can't wait to see how you make my nose grow! There were so many talented children that auditioned. I just can't believe that I am lucky enough to be one of the three that were chosen.'

Intrigue and romance in 1947 India India, 1947: the final Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten, is tasked with overseeing the transition of British India to independence; but meeting conflict as all sides clash in the face of monumental change. Set against an exotic Indian backdrop at the time of the Raj, “Viceroy’s House” tells the incredible true story of the final months of British rule in India, and the resilience of the human spirit. It’s 70 years since the Partition of India, that resulted in the birth of the new country, Pakistan. After 190 years of British rule, British judge, Cyril Radcliffe, was given only 40 days to draw the new boundaries that would divide the subcontinent into India and Pakistan. As a backdrop to “Viceroy’s House”, here are some facts and figures: ● In 1947 the population was 400 million across British India including modern-day Pakistan and Bangladesh ● It is a widely-held estimate that one million people were killed in the brutal violence that followed Partition. Some estimates put the toll at double this figure ● 15 million people migrated, often on foot, during Partition Hindus and Sikhs to India, and Muslims to Pakistan. ● 400, 000 refugees walked in a single column from modernday Pakistan to India (Source: Barney Henderson, columnist) Interesting, and, in equal measure, shocking as the stats might be, it’s hard to conceptualise big numbers: how does the film bring home the message? Simply, it tells the story through the lives of the principal political figures and some of those families affected by the change; and where Lord Mountbatten’s role in the so-called ‘Mountbatten Plan’ appears to be as victim, rather than architect. At the heart of the film are relationships, attitudes and intrigues (NOT conspiracy theories) and this is an insightful glimpse into the upper-crust lifestyle of the ‘great and the good’ and, in turn, their relationship with the local people. Cultures and classes collide, political intrigue abounds and, although there is no doubt about the outcomes, this is still fascinating stuff. The film’s Director, Gurinder Chadha (‘Bride and Prejudice’, ‘Bend it Like Beckham’) is a British-Asian. Two characters in her film tell the story of a love affair that was, in fact, the story of her grandparents, who were dramatically caught up in the maelstrom of partitioning. (Stay to the end of the film to see their photographs). This is not a diatribe on right or wrong. “Viceroy’s House” does two things cleverly: it informs without preaching and entertains

(despite the serious implications of the story) without flippancy; and looks spectacular. Hugh Bonneville (‘Downton Abbey’, ‘W1A’) as Mountbatten and Gillian Anderson (‘X-Files’, ‘Bleak House’) as Lady Mountbatten are ably assisted, in a strong cast, by Michael Gambon (‘Victoria and Abdul’, ‘Kingsman – The Golden Circle’) and Manish Dayal (‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’) Next month we go “Singin’ in the Rain” (1952), our Christmas special on Tuesday 12 December. You may have seen this on TV but this is a rare opportunity to see this much-loved classic as it should be seen - on the big screen: and what a difference it makes. EVERY PENNY goes to The Children’s Society. You may remember that we sent £723 last year, from “L’Elisir d’Amore”: let’s beat it this year! Support our charity as part of your Festive Season. Jon

“The Grange Art Gallery was my baby. It was an important part of my life. And for anyone who has ever worked there, it’s been a cement in the village.” The words of Barry Hinchliff, the well-known artist, who ran the Grange Art Gallery for seventeen years after he retired as Head of the Art Department at Longhill School. It was in 1993 that Barry Hinchliff was invited by Mike Smith, who Barry describes as “one of the founding fathers of the eventual take-over of The Grange”, on to the Grange Committee and asked to run the Gallery. “I got together twenty friends of mine who were artists to show in the first exhibition,” said Barry. “But I insisted I must have two extra Below: Art by Barry Hinchcliff
