Welcome
Welcome to the October Edition… Writing this in mid September, it seems that autumn has arrived already, its cold, raining, and windy. Perhaps we will get lucky and see a bit more sunshine in October, still the cold dark evenings do provide an excuse to do something indoors such as catch up on what’s happening in The Deans Magazine. Autumn does provide plenty of new photographic opportunities for readers keen to enter our latest photography competition - see page 9 for details of this and results from our August contest. Finally a reminder that the current magazine as well as more than a year’s archive can be found on our website: www.deansmagazine.co.uk, it is good to see that we do have a steady stream of visitors to the site, but it is worth another reminder as a place to look for that article or advert you remember seeing somewhere. Rottingdean Artist of theSpring month Music Festival
Nikki Bradford My name is Nikki Bradford-La Brooy, I’m an author, former fashion editor, artist and therapist living in Rottingdean. I love Klimt, Botticelli and the Pre Raphaelites, but my work involves making romantic 3D collages and mosaics combining both pictures and words, working exclusively with recycled vintage materials sourced locally from our beach, antique and charity shops. I believe that nothing is ever too broken or too old to make something beautiful with, and celebrate the love stories, history and experiences of the past by using art to bring them into the present. For marriages, anniversaries, special birthdays and life celebrations I also collaborate closely with clients, combining my own ideas and materials with their real-life memories, and objects which have special significance for them. This Romantic Nostalgia collection uses organic dried rose petals from my garden, fragments torn from crumbling poetry folios and 100 year old copies of Shakespeare ( the books are falling apart but the amazing words still shine out of them!) old love letters, and delicate broken antique jewellery not only to look beautiful, but all tell a unique story. I also use antique wooden compositor trays (once used for holding old-fashioned printers type) , treating them as collage canvasses to arrange pretty but quirky things, fragments from the natural world and scraps of poetry and prose so every time you look you see something
new. Or if it’s a commission, again I collaborate closely with my client so we can also use several things which are special to them. My mosaics are made from cracked vintage china which no one can use any longer yet which has wonderful colours and patterns dating from Victorian times to the 50s, some of it pieces of old Serves, Wedgewood and Spode. And just for a change, I do a loud, cheerful kitch collection of mosaics and retro 50s and 60s collages in rainbow brights called Happy Days!
(My work is currently available at Open Art in Rottingdean. In Brighton it’s in The Daniel Laurence gallery on Marine Drive and shops on Brighton seafront including Posh Totty. I keep my fees low as possible to ensure this work is as affordable and accessible. 01273 300208 / nikki@labrooy.plus.com)

Benjamin Franklin
What is certain in life?
Benjamin Franklin gave us the renowned quote: "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." We would like to add a third certainty here - computer failure. Once upon a time, products were build to last a lifetime. Some of you may still have a working household object that family and friends joke with you should be donated to a museum. But modern technology is evolving at such a rapid rate that your computers and laptops quickly become "out of date". Unfortunately, no matter how much you have spent on the very best IT equipment, there are no guarantees that it won't fail. We have experience of brand new hard drives, straight out of the box failing. And even if your hardware does behave itself, there is still an element of human error. Viruses get inadvertently downloaded, computers get left in the sunlight, laptops get forgotten on the last train home from London. So if we can be sure that, at some point, something bad will happen to our computers, what can we do about it? Firstly,
and most importantly, do not ignore this fact! Having the attitude that "it will never happen to me" will not save all the information that you have on your computer. Installing an automated backup programme that saves all your data to the cloud will ensure that you will always have access to the information that you need even if your computer fails, or your laptop gets stolen or you accidentally smash your iPad. And a top class anti virus will help prevent you inadvertently downloading something you don't want - it can ask you, "are you really sure you want to open that email?" or "I really wouldn't recommend you go to that website!". There are provisions that you take that will, in the long term, save you both heart ache and money.

Local business feature
Taylor’s Pet Services Today we’re going to feature fun local walks to have with your furry friend! Established in 2007, we are a professional dog walking service with a wealth of experience. One of the joys of our business is finding fun, safe open spaces to enjoy with the dogs in our care. Peacehaven is a wonderful place to live, with plenty of green spaces offering invigorating walks, right on the doorstep. We strive to provide our dogs with stimulating walks in a varied range of settings; our favourite spots include: 1. Looking for lush greenery and oodles of space? Try Telscombe Tye - 'Tye' meaning enclosure or common pasture is an area of registered common land. It is managed sensitively using traditional farming methods ensuring wildflowers, insects and ground nesting birds can flourish. The site also has a dew pond which was originally dug out for livestock to drink from where no natural ponds or streams occur. Parking is available along Gorham Way, or by using the car park at the top of Telscombe Cliffs Way. 2. Or perhaps an area of rugged natural beauty? It has to be Hoddern Farm – it is an area of Peacehaven which hosts stunning walks. The area is near the Hoddern Farm Stables at Peacehaven but backs onto a public area popular with dog walkers. It is popular due to the beautiful scenery and you get a feeling of space. Access is just off Roderick Avenue, Peacehaven. Or you can gain access via Cissbury Avenue, Peacehaven.

3. Have a bit more time and eager to get that wow factor on scenery? Give Castle Hill a go – is an area of rich chalk grassland managed for the council by Natural England. The site is within the South Downs National Park and is designated a National Nature Reserve (NNR). The bottoms of the valleys are almost totally secluded from the nearby city suburbs and there are magnificent views from higher up the steep slopes. Parking is available just off the Falmer Road, Woodingdean. At Taylor’s we are passionate about dogs but also provide services for all creatures: great and small. We love walking and being in the great outdoors; hopefully you may see us around! If you are ever in need of assistance – whether it be dog walking, pet feeding, or you require house-sitting services, we will be more than happy to help. Oak Leaf update
In the May edition I asked for memories of The Oak Leaf Coffee Bar. I am most grateful to Chris Wrapson for providing these memories for us: In the spring of 1959 The Oak Leaf Coffee Bar opened on Saltdean By 1960, The Oak Leaf had become an established popular seafront, where Wyatt’s estate agent is today. It provided a much meeting place - almost like a second home for many of the local needed safe and lively indoor meeting place for the young people teenagers. During 1961 the Oak Leaf was renamed 'The Saltdean of Saltdean. During the first few months the place was packed Dungeon.' In those days that name would be viewed as very cool. with youngsters jostling to gain admission. However, it never really caught on and when asked you would always say ‘I'm going down the Oak Leaf’ - a place very much The immediate neighbours were not happy to say the least. where boy met girl Indeed, several of those teenage romances Letters of complaint were received; mostly about the excessively which began life at the Oak Leaf eventually blossomed into long loud juke box music and the noisy motorcycles which would and happy marriages. constantly come and go on summer evenings. Local resident’s charity work
Women for Women International Local women walk to Mount Everest base camp and a 120km Peace March to raise money for women war survivors. In July local resident, Atlanta Cook, joined the Women for Women International team for the annual March of Peace in Bosnia. She walked 120km in 3 days, from Tuzla to Srebrenica, to raise awareness of the wonderful work that the charity does in Bosnia & Herzegovina. The team of 10 raised a staggering £30,000 to help women war victims rebuild their lives! Back in 2012 local resident & 5 Rhythms dance teacher, Neda Nenadic, trekked to the Mount Everest base camp to raise awareness of the Women for Women International charity and raise a whopping £10,000 She is now one of their UK Ambassadors.
Just Giving Pages http://www.justgiving.com/AtlantaCook http://www.justgiving.com/NedaNenadic Find out more about this brilliant charity: http://www.womenforwomen.org
Women for Women International is a charity that has given hope to over 351,0000 women survivors of war since 1993. It sponsors women through a year-long educational programme that gives them the business skills, human rights awareness and confidence they need to become social leaders that can help rebuild their shattered communities. These are just two women here trying to help women there, so please support them by donating directly to the charity via their Just Giving pages below or joining them at the monthly 5 Rhythms dance fund-raiser events (last Monday of every month) at Rottingdean Village Hall 7:30pm – 9:30pm, £10/£8 conc.

Health & nutrition advice
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Pumpkin Seeds Known as Pepita in Spanish, especially when roasted are edible green seeds found inside a white hull that you find in the centre of your pumpkin. Squash (cucurbita) is thought to be the earliest domestic western plant, dating back 8-10,000 years preceding maize and beans by about 4,000 years. They were eaten by the Aztecs and are a popular snack in Mediterranean countries. A good source of protein and B vitamins, rich in the minerals manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, iron, copper and potassium. They also contain the amino acid L-tryptophan which is a precursor to serotonin, which helps lower depression and helps us feel relaxed in the day time and helps us sleep at night. Cucurbitanes are triterpenoids or terpenes, essential oils found in the waxy covering of plants.
Adding Pumpkin Seeds to your Diet Sprinkle on salads and steamed vegetables Eat as a snack raw or roasted Add to smoothies Add when baking bread or crackers We are happy to advise you on your health matters.
Anti-Oxidant Anti-Inflammatory Studies suggest the Cucurbita Ficifolia has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Bladder Pumpkin seed oil extracts were shown to remarkably reduce bladder and urethra pressure and increase bladder compliance in rabbits.

Pumpkin seeds snacks were shown to reduce the risk of bladder stone disease in Thai adolescents by improving the nutrients and increasing the inhibitors of crystal formation. Cancer Pumpkin seed extract was found to contain lignans and flavones. Lignans are phytoestrogens similar to estrogens and may affect breast cancer risk by mimicking estrogen/anti-estrogenic properties, particularly post menopause. Shown to induce death of pancreatic cancer cells, though the mechanism is not clearly understood yet. Cucurbita moschata was shown to inhibit the growth of targeted melanoma cells. Diabetes Selected seeds were found to contain globulins (proteins) that have a significant anti-hyperglycaemic activity. An aqueous extract showed antioxidant properties, being useful as a good prevention for oxidative stress and could be helpful with diabetes mellitus, also due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Tests on rats suggest that pumpkin seeds may be helpful to prevent diabetes and its complications. Parasites Cucurbitanes were found to inhibit early stages of malarial parasites at the liver stage, inhibiting its development rather than its ability to invade liver cells. Prostate Studies on rats inhibited the start of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), prostate enlargement due to increased testosterone. This is thought to be from increasing the ratio of the male /female hormones testosterone and estradiol.
