Welcome to the October Edition…

Page 7 Artist of the Month Page 11 Dolphin Computer Tips Page 17 Four Deans Stroke Club

Towards the end of September I took part in an off road ride organised by Cycle Seahaven and the Big Parks Project. Setting off from Peacehaven the route took us over the Downs close to Saltdean, Woodingdean and back through Telscombe Village. It never ceases to amaze me that all this is within a few miles of our doorsteps - places I’ve never visited before despite living locally for over 20 years now. If you are a Deans resident I highly recommend exploring the countryside near by, there really is a great deal to see and do around us.

Page 25 Bridgeford’s Best Bites

October has been another fantastic month for local articles: Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions make it three months in a row on page 49. There’s fund raising news from Badgers Tennis Club on page 61, and of course our usual popular features including Artist of the Month - p7 and the Local History feature - p27.

Amanda Davidson As a resident of Tudor Close for over 4 years, Amanda Davidson has long wanted to create an exhibition about the once famous hotel. But the more she looked into its fascinating history, the more she realised there was to know! Since the time the original 15th century farm buildings of Dean Court road were converted into expensive Mock Tudor houses ( ÂŁ800 in 1930) to its swift rise to popularity as " The Loveliest Hotel in Sussex", Tudor Close has intrigued passers-by with their cameras at the ready. Bette Davies is known to have stayed here. As recorded in the 1929 publication of The House Desirable by P.A.Barron, the desire to create stylish new homes on the back of the Arts and Crafts movement led to new builds that looked heavily to the past. Mock Tudor homes that looked grandly old from the outside were built with all mod-cons of electricity, modern bathrooms and kitchens and detached garages for spacious family living. And so the 'tudorising' of Dean Court road came at the time of the development of Saltdean and then Peacehaven. Amanda's exhibition draws from original hotel brochures and postcards, recreating in pen and ink, watercolour,

oils and acrylic, a pictorial vision of Tudor Close both then and now. Images include a spoof poster of "Murder at Tudor Close" that later became the parlour game Cluedo also decorative panels based on the exterior carvings and individual 'house portraits'. Amanda admits that she has barely scratched the surface of this project and is hoping that many of the villagers will add to this exhibition with their knowledge both written and in photographs. There will be a board for people to display any images or snippets of information. A calendar and cards will be on sale amongst the display of artwork. Exhibition runs from Thurs 9th-22nd Oct in The William Nicholson Art Gallery at The Grange Museum. Open every day except Wed. Contact Amanda: amandasdavidson@gmail.com

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 61

Top 5 IT mistakes made by businesses A quick glance through this magazine and you will see examples of a lot of local businesses. All businesses require technology in some shape or form; HMRC encourage you to do everything online, and running a company without emails or the internet is nigh on impossible. We don’t notice our technology until it becomes a headache – it’s not until it goes wrong that we realise the simple mistakes we have failed to prevent. 1: Free Lunch: There's no such thing as a free lunch – and the same applies to technology. It may seem unnecessary to pay for an anti virus when you can just have a free one – but the premium antivirus packages are there for a very good reason – they offer more comprehensive security. 2: No Wingman: Too many businesses still rely on external backups that they need to manually do, and to remember to do, or worse, no backup at all! Having a cloud based fully encrypted automated backup in place ensures that your wingman is by your side at every step. 3: Make Do And Mend: Older computer systems are more vulnerable, and those still using XP are already being attacked. If your business is still using XP it is not a case of “if” but of “when”.

4: On The Cheap: You saw a brilliant deal on a printer so you went ahead – without looking at how much replacement cartridges would cost. Or that great offer on a laptop – without realising it didn’t have enough memory for your ever expanding business requirements, nor could it be upgraded…buying cheap will backfire on you. 5: It Won’t Ever Happen: Do you have such a thing as a disaster recovery plan? What if your computer systems went down? What if you lost the internet? What if there was an online campaign against your company? Would you be able to ride out the storm without adversely affecting your customers? Ensuring that you have a safety net around you will enable your business not only to survive but to grow and to thrive. Please contact us if you need any further help or advice.

Four Deans Stroke Club Where people meet, socialise and participate in fun activities every week. St Patrick’s Church Hall, Woodingdean. Stroke Club Organiser, Caroline Hancock, regrettably resigned from her role at the end of August. She will be very much missed, not only as organiser but also as 'escort' on the mini-bus, a role she has done from the very start of the club, fourteen years ago. Everyone who has worked with her wishes her the very best. David Hunt adds, "thank you is hardly adequate for the care and kindness she has shown to so many people over the years." A Special General Meeting will appoint Caroline's successor and the results will be published in the next issue. in the mean time, the club's activities will continue as normal. What the Four Deans Stroke Club offiers its members Every Friday, the group socialises over tea and coffee, before doing some gentle movements to music. After lunch, there is usually a raffle followed by a special guest, talk, demonstration or quizzes. These are just some of the activities the members have enjoyed this year:

A flower arranging demonstration, a pottery painting class, a musical performance, a visit from the air ambulance, a presentation with tastings of ready meals and a talk from Rhia Wheeler, of Rottingdean, about what her life was like under occupation in WW2. There are also monthly outings that have included: Pub lunches, Hamden Park in Eastbourne, a BBQ at Stanmer Park and a visit to Chichester theatre. Plea for volunteers If you have a background in nursing, catering or fund raising, we would love to hear from you. If you are just good at interacting with people, have new ideas or are a born organiser, we would also love to hear from you! We need more help if we are to continue this important meeting place for people who have had and are recovering from a stroke. Please contact: David Hunt on 01273 303236 or Diana Tolhurst on 01273 272815

Health & nutrition advice

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Sprouting Growing your own sprouts is a cheap and easy way to improve your nutrition by eating live, raw food. A sprout is the transitional stage between a seed and a plant. Studies show that regular consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases and increasing consumption is recommended to prevent chronic diseases related to free radical-induced oxidative stress. Nutrition and Effects of Sprouts: The seeds and sprouts of mung bean (Vigna radiata) contain abundant nutrients with biological activities, including anthocyanins (pelargonidin, delphinidin), flavonoids (isoflavones, isoliquiritigenin, rutin and quercitin), isothiocyanates, phenolic acids, tanins, organic acids, amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids. Dynamic changes in metabolites during the sprouting process and related biological activities, include antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-hypertensive, lipid metabolism accommodation, anti-hypertensive, and anti-tumour effects. Seed Germination: A study on the effect of germination on the nutrient content of mung beans, showed significant increases in phytochemical and vitamin C content, and antioxidant activity. On day 8 the vitamin C content was 24 times higher, the phenolic compounds and total flavinoids were 4 to 7 times higher and quercetin-3-O-glucoside content increased significantly; total antioxidant activity was 6 times higher. Iron content enhanced significantly. 4 day old lentil sprouts increased in caffeic, salicylic acid and genistein; 6 day old lentil sprouts have highest tannins, flavinoids and total phenolics and highest antioxidant potential. Antioxidant: Tartary buckwheat has higher antioxidant properties than ordinary buckwheat; both had a positive impact on liver cancer cells. Cancer : Isoliquiritigenin, a flavonoid, is a potent anti-tumour promoting agent that inhibits the proliferation of prostate cancer cells. Cardiovascular: Buckwheat sprouts may reduce cardiovascular risk and metabolic disorders such as hypertension due to their as rutin and quercetin content. Cholesterol: Hepatic total cholesterol levels significantly reduced, whereas hepatic serum triglyceride levels were totally unaffected. Day 8 buckwheat sprouts (high polyphenolic and moderate

quercetin) maximized hypocholesterolemic, hypotriglyceridemic, and anti-oxidative activities. Glycaemic Index: Sprouting decreased bioavailable starch and elevated resistant starch content, altering its potential bioavailability and expected glycaemic index (GI). 3 day old sprouts have the highest total starch content, 6 day old sprouts the lowest. Obesity: Peanut sprout extract has anti-obesity effect by lowering the expressions of a receptor which regulates the expression of adiponectin. Growing Sprouts: All edible grains, legumes, and seeds can be sprouted. Wash the seeds thoroughly and soak overnight for about 10-12 hours in water that starts off tepid. Avoid soaking for too long as the seeds may rot and ferment. You can use a jam jar with holes in the lid or buy a purpose made jar with a mesh lid. Rinse and drain the seeds which will now be full of water; rinse every morning and evening. Once they have sprouted they should be refrigerated. Eat around day 8. Adding Sprouts to your Diet: ● Add to salads, soups, stews and stir fry ● Serve as a side dish with Tamari sauce and sesame oil ● Serve a large handful of alfalfa on a bed of brown rice, surround with chopped tomatoes and drizzle with tahini ● Use sprouted chick peas to make hummus ● Use sprouted lentils or chick peas to make curries We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Local history

Local History - Part 29

Saltdean’s early architecture part 2 Mike Laslett

In 1930’s rural England the modern international style must have caused some shock and disbelief. Such design was even commented on in a Punch cartoon of the time where the owner is saying to her bemused friends “Do tell me you loathe it.”

They were also responsible for the house in Wicklands Avenue, Saltdean, illustrated here, which is the sole survivor of three such houses built speculatively on isolated plots in Saltdean for £550 each in 1934. The cubist house illustrated here is one of six built in Saltdean. This particular example in Founthill Avenue was designed by Claud H Cowney in 1934 and was once the home of the music hall entertainer Will Fyffe in the late thirties. He was best known for writing the song “I belong to Glasgow.”

Probably the most impressive house of this style you will have seen would be High and Over (above), used in the Poirot TV series. It was designed by the New Zealand architect Amyas Connell whose practice, Connell, Ward & Lucas, were the innovators of Modernist architecture in 1930s England.

Historically, Britain has welcomed foreign architectural styles, with Italian and French Gothic used for our cathedrals, Italian Renaissance used by the Tudors, while Greek or Roman Classical styles were adopted by the Georgians. Therefore it seems strange that in the 1920s and 1930s there was such a slow reception of continental Modernist architecture, developed largely in Germany and France. Perhaps after the horrors of World War One, Britain turned its back on the continent, politically and culturally. Another reason, no doubt, was the great popularity of Art Deco which preceded it. It would seem that after the horrors of World War 1, the General Strike and the recession that people either wanted to look towards a bold new future or look centuries back to the Tudors!

ATM PIN number reversal hoax email We have been alerted to a hoax email that has been circulating purporting to originate from Crimestoppers. This is a common online scam advising people to insert their PIN number in reverse to alert police if they are being threatened to withdraw cash from an ATM . This information is not true and did not originate from Crimestoppers. Their website states that this is a hoax and falsified information and asks that you do not act on it. If you do find yourself being threatened in this manner then contact the police. If you receive this email or one similar to it please ignore it. . The email states: ATM PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know!! If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse. For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you

placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location. All ATM’s carry this emergency sequencer by law. This information was recently broadcast by Crime Stoppers however it is seldom used because people just don't know about it. Please pass this along to everyone. This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends. What to do if you receive this email: IGNORE IT!!!!! Local Lions group in action

Senior Citizen Christmas Lunches It is amazing to think we must now start to organise events for Christmas, as many venues become booked up very quickly. One of the most important set of events held every year by the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions are our special Christmas Lunches for senior citizens in the Deans area. There are currently 227 senior citizens from Saltdean, Rottingdean and Woodingdean on the Lions list for people that may be interested in attending one of the Lions specially tailored events. Recently the Lions have added a further 19 seniors to the list with names coming mostly from those already on the list who have asked for their friends to be included, so that they can also be eligible to attend in the future. The list is used to send out invitations for the Christmas lunches and our popular coach trip outings. To be added to our seniors list for event information and in particular for this year’s Christmas Lunch, please contact the Lions on 08458 339617 and leave your name and address plus a contact telephone number. We can also be contacted through our website www.rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. For the Christmas lunches we usually have around 120 attendees split between two weekdays around the middle of December. In recent years the venue has been the White Horse Hotel in Rottingdean. The meals are normally a traditional three course Christmas meal with tea or coffee plus a raffle with prizes typically including wine, chocolates and biscuits.

To help towards costs (particularly of the main events) the Lions ask for a nominal payment. However, the Lions aim to make these events as inclusive as possible and if there are any difficulties, financial or otherwise, that may prevent attendance, please do get in touch. The Lions have received many compliments from senior citizens who have attended these events. So please do get in touch if you or any of your eligible family and friends wish to be added to our list to be notified of the seniors’ events. Also, please do pass this information to someone that may like to join in but perhaps isn’t able necessarily to make contact in a world that seems to be becoming more and more digitally orientated. The Lions want to ensure that they reach as wide a scope of seniors as possible. Many thanks for your help.

Back in June the Lions organised a coach outing for senior citizens which, while enjoying some perfect weather, took in Runcton Farm Shop & Pet Centre and then onwards for a firstrate tea prepared by Sidlesham W.I. It was a summer mystery tour as, although knowing the final destination, most of the passengers had never followed this rural route before – providing another very enjoyable day.

Local Group

Saltdean and District Choir Originally established by the Saltdean Afternoon W.I. sometime in the late 1970's or early 1980's, the choir is now run by a small committee. We are a very friendly group and would welcome new members to share our enthusiasm for the joy of singing and giving pleasure to the audiences‌ There have been many changes of Conductors, pianists and musical Directors over the years, all have contributed a great deal. Gordon Bull joined in 2010 as Musical Director and Jonathan Leigh is the accompanist. This has proved to be a very successful arrangement as Gordon is an experienced musician with a vast knowledge of teaching and conducting choirs. The number of Choir members has fluctuated over the years varying from eighteen to twenty-four. There are Altos and Sopranos but no-one is required to have an audition. They enjoy singing a variety of songs in unison or parts and hope to pass on their enjoyment to their audiences.

Spring or Summer. Rehearsals are held in the main hall at Saltdean Community Centre on Tuesdays at 9.45 to 12.00 from September to May. Small groups have entertained in Rest homes and other venues. It is said that singing is good for the soul and we believe this to be true. Please come along to meet us and see whether you would be interested in joining. Rehearsals will recommenced in September in preparation for a concert on December 16th. For further information contact the Secretary, Pamela Reynolds 01273-583701 or the Chairman, Audrey Pickles 01273-303596.

Slimming World News

Super slimmer Colleen is named Woman of the Year! A Saltdean slimmer has discovered less is more after losing almost three stone and winning the title of Woman of the Year 2014 in her Saltdean slimming group. Colleen Weafer lost weight with one of the two Slimming World groups in Saltdean after dropping two stone and 9 1/2 pounds after joining earlier this year. Now her fellow slimmers have voted her as their Slimming World Woman of the Year 2014 Around one in four women in the UK and Ireland are severely overweight and at risk of suffering a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition recognises the achievements of women in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes for themselves and their families. Colleen joined Slimming World after having her second baby. She says: “I’d gained weight after having my children. I tried different diets but they usually left me feeling hungry and miserable, they were so limited. Slimming World is completely different, I never have to miss out on real food or feel deprived and I’ve lost almost three stone while still eating spaghetti bolognese, curry and burgers!” Colleen follows Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmers to fill up on satisfying yet healthy everyday foods like fruit and veg, lean meat and fish, pasta, potatoes, rice and pulses without having to weigh or measure them. Colleen says: “My family and friends are all amazed how much I can eat and still lose weight. I cook the same meals for my husband and he can’t believe it’s all healthy food because it tastes so good. I still eat all the same meals that I did before but now I cook and prepare them differently. No foods are banned and I cook from scratch. Spaghetti carbonara and curries are my favourite meals. “I know a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club because they don’t know what to

expect. But from the minute I walked into Slimming World, the support I’ve received from my consultant, Shelley, and the rest of the group has been brilliant,” adds Colleen, who is almost at the target weight she set herself . “At first I was nervous, especially about stepping on the scales, but straightaway I was made to feel welcome and now it’s like a meet-up with friends. I couldn’t have done it without them - when you’re doing well they spur you on further and when you’re struggling they keep you going. Shelley Phythian who runs the Saltdean Friday morning group and opened a Monday evening group in April says: “I’m so proud of Colleen. Not only does she look fabulous, she’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires other women in Saltdean to change their lives in the same way. It can be hard to admit that you need to do something about your weight and to ask for help, but I think Colleen shows just what’s possible when you do.” The Saltdean Slimming World groups are held every Monday at 7.30pm in St Martin’s Church Hall and every Friday morning at 10.00am in the Community Centre. To find out more call Shelley on 07982 23299.

Game, Set and Cash! Tennis players smashed a fundraising target when they took to the courts to raise money for the NSPCC. More than 30 players from around East Sussex gathered at Badgers Tennis Club in Kemptown for the annual charity tournament. And they served up their biggest cheque yet with over £1,000 being presented to the children’s charity. The annual NSPCC tournament has been running at Badgers for many years with players from clubs around East Sussex, joining the event to raise money and awareness of the charity. Tracey Bravo, the NSPCC’s Community Fundraising Manager for Sussex, said the cash raised would pay for over 250 ChildLine calls. “Last year there were 681 calls to ChildLine from Brighton and Hove landline numbers. Landline calls only represent around 22% of voice calls with the rest from mobiles. “ChildLine is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help children and young people who need someone to talk to.” Tracey also highlighted a new initiative - the

ZIpit app - which has been designed to help youngsters fend off inappropriate chat. “I really would like to give a massive thank you to all at Badgers Tennis Club for raising so much money and putting on such a fun and well organised event,” Tracey added.
