Welcome to the November edition! The Front cover page has been very kindly supplied by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography. I think it speaks for itself. I am not doing the normal Christmas section this year, somehow it does not seem appropriate. There have been lots of changes this year for everyone in one way or another. I am, however, determined to put some lights outside my house as soon I can get away with it this year. I am looking forward to some twinkling magic during these dark times for my neighbours to share. Nights are drawing in and things are getting a bit chilly. Nature is still doing its thing though. Autumn can be such an interesting time of year if you can get out and about. If you have taken any interesting shots of nature this year please do email them across to me and I might be able to do a showcase of the best. I have been speaking with people all year who are sharing my problem with getting a good restful night sleep. I am hearing more and more of people dreaming unpleasant things, waking in the early hours and generally having a low level of anxiety. It is understandable, but if you could drop me an email, letting me know a little bit about it, I would like to discuss this with the professionals I have contact with through the magazine. Together I think we can put together a little piece on what things can be done to help. Don’t forget to keep up with your supplements, whatever is appropriate for your body and level of health. Lets all come out of this year feeling optimistic and ready to roll as much as possible. Please use our advertisers if you need their services. It is vital for Peacehaven and local areas to continue to thrive. I have had lovely workmen in this month. Remember to be patient with each other. Everyone’s story is very different this year but you can see it weighs heavy on all our minds. Look out for each other. Anne (Editor)

ean Views The state of the industry now ....it still looks grim COVID-19 has been a huge shock to the computer industry where everything is ruthlessly efficient and there is no slack in the system. In a fortnight well stocked warehouses were stripped bare. With the majority of laptops made in China and Vietnam, replenishing the shelves would take a while. By now, I hoped a degree of normality would have returned, alas no. I have just looked at my main UK supplier, the cheapest i3 15.6” laptop in stock has a cost price of £607. The factories are not churning out cheap machines as Intel is only making i5 processors and a few i3s. I am lucky, I am protected from the worse price surges because I am the local distributor for the German brand Terra. As Intel’s biggest customer in Europe they had healthy stocks of cheaper processors, I snapped up some of the last budget notebooks.

If you are buying at the moment be careful. The sub £500 machines are either Chromebooks or Windows S. Neither Chomebooks nor Win S will run your existing programs, you can only use the ones you buy from their App stores. It is possible to get the machine out of “S” mode but it can be fiddly. Personally, I would avoid both as they are slow and grossly overpriced. Steer clear of PC World and Argos, talk to the independents that advertise here first. In the long run we should be able to find you what you need, not what is in stock today! Happy hunting….

32 Maintaining living standards in retirement – time to reconsider equity release? We’d all welcome access to an extra income or lump sum in retirement, but mention the words ‘equity release’ and some run a mile. Sam Murphy, Managing Director of Mortgage Medics has a different take on it. Historically, there was good reason for this reaction, with high interest rates, inflexible products and a lack of Proper competition in the market. Take a look at the equity release market now though, and you’ll find a quiet revolution taking place. Interest rates starting at just under 2.5%, flexible features common and plenty of competition between providers. According to the Equity Release Council’s market commentary published in September this year: ● Average rates for equity release products reached record lows of 4.11% in July 2020, with over half of products offering a rate of 4% or lower, and a fifth offering rates below 3%. ● Product choice for consumers was up 29% from July 2019 and by 88% since the start of 2019. ● Equity release rates fell further than other personal borrowing products – mortgages, personal loans, credit cards and overdrafts – over both a one-and two- year period. Recent ONS data shows more than one in three (37%) people aged 65+ are worried they will not be able to maintain their living standards in retirement. This is one reason we’re talking to record numbers of retirees about equity release. It’s important to consider alternatives such as downsizing, perhaps asking family for support, but with rates at an all-time low, equity release should be on any homeowner’s radar, when considering their retirement finances. Most equity release plans now allow overpayments, meaning those who prefer to can service the interest and prevent the debt increasing over time, safe in the knowledge that any monthly payments being made aren’t compulsory and can be stopped at any time, should financial circumstances change. Even without servicing the interest, in many cases the amount of equity in your home will still grow, depending on house price inflation. If reading this has got you thinking then feel free to get in touch; we’d be delighted to help you understand your options. There’s no charge for an initial consultation and we’re happy to offer appointments on the phone or by video calling services such as Zoom or WhatsApp. Sam Murphy – Managing Director, Mortgage Medics These are lifetime mortgages; to understand the features and risks ask for a personalised illustration.

If you have a great idea, get in touch with us so we can help you Make it Happen! Examples of projects we are helping include: ● Uniform Bank – Preloved uniform. ● Newhaven Support Group – Volunteers supporting people in need in the area. ● Happy Boxes – with Havens Community Hub, a box of happiness for their club members in times of isolation. ● SEA – A network of people and groups sharing skills and knowledge, caring for each other and preparing a sustainable future.

36 Peacehaven Town Council are working in collaboration with Haven’s Health Care by holding regular 6 weekly virtual meetings to address the concerns that are brought to our attention from Peacehaven residents. These are a few questions & replies from a recent meeting: 1. Many elderly patients and those who are not online, or do not wish to use a computer, feel that the surgery is concentrating more and more on online methods of dealing with patients’ needs, and they feel somewhat left behind. What can the surgery do to allay the fears of a significant number of patients who feel this way? Our aim is to try and target the younger generations along the lines of more digital ways of working so this frees up the traditional ways for us to be freer for the older generation. So yes, we are plugging it but hopefully by getting younger people going down digital routes leaves us more time for the older patients. It is not our intention to side-line them or reject them in anyway, but digital routes will take away a significant number of patients from the more traditional routes. We have no intention of neglecting older patients as we are aware, they make up a significant amount of our patient list size. 2. We were advised at the first meeting of this group that resident Doctors numbers would be up to a 'Full complement' by 1st September. Has this been achieved, and what is a full complement of doctors for the surgery of this size with ever increasing patient numbers? Both surgeries have really struggled over recent years with many older doctors retiring and leaving and great difficulty in being able to recruit new and younger GPs, along with the general national shortage of doctors. The last 2 years in particular have been very difficult, especially for the remaining few partners and we have all found this very stressful, staff and patients alike. However, this year, we have had more success and have managed to recruit five new younger GPs. In addition to this we have been able to retain a couple of retiring partners, Dr Starling from Meridian and Dr Byrne from Rowe who will be coming back for a few days per month to help with some of the more specialist work such as joint injections, minor surgery, the freeze clinic and private insurance reports work and medicals, etc. This is really helpful as it releases the normal salaried GPs to concentrate on the patients’ needs of the day. 3. Have the number of reception/telephonists’ staff been increased, as was mentioned at the first meeting? We have taken on two new receptionists and are training them up. We currently have an advert out in NHS Jobs for more receptionists and hoping to recruit another three so please spread the word. If you would like to submit a question or join the next liaison meeting which is on Tuesday 17 November at 4:00 pm, please contact Deborah Donovan, civicandmarketing@peacehaventowncouncil.gov.uk

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 8th NOVEMBER 2020 This years Remembrance Day, on 8 November will be different from other years, we will not be organising a parade or a long service; we will be following Government advice regarding social gatherings, so we will be advising our local organisations and residents NOT to gather at the War Memorial, due to COVID-19 restrictions. We will not be inviting guests to attend the short service at the War Memorial site at 11:00 am. The ONLY attendees at this time will be The Mayors of both Peacehaven & Telscombe Town Councils, the Royal British Legion representative accompanied by the standard bearer, our local bugler, and the Rev’d Tim Mills, Peacehaven Town Council will video the short service at a distance and will post on our Social Media sites. This decision has been made to avoid social gatherings; we are following Government advice. We would however, like to invite, dignitaries and our local organisations to lay their wreaths after 11:20 am. Those who would like to lay a wreath on behalf of their organisation or group will be given a time slot to visit the war memorial, in a safe capacity and at their own risk. It is suggested that sanitiser is used after laying the wreath, please bring this with you when visiting the site. Please contact Deborah Donovan, Civic Officer (civicandmarketing@peacehaventowncouncil.gov.uk) who will allocate you with a time to lay your wreath. If a poppy wreath is required for Ceremonial Laying at the War Memorial, please contact the Royal British Legion Poppy Organiser Stephen Redman on 01273 587599 who will arrange a safe collection point. There has been a lot of speculation on social media regarding Armistice Day too, unfortunately, we won’t be inviting schools or organisations to attend the short service on 11 November, however, residents can visit to pay their respects at any time after 11:15 am taking into consideration social distancing and gathering in numbers. Peacehaven Town Council will video the short service and will post on their social media sites. We would like our residents to Remember at Home this year and are fully supporting the idea of placing pictures of poppies in windows which could also be a fabulous idea for the schools to take on board too. Peacehaven Town Council are working with the Co-op Funeral Care (Caring Lady) who have donated material for the Sussex Volunteer Crafters to make ‘Poppy’ face masks. These will be on sale from 19 October in the Information Office, priced at just £2.50, all funds will be donated to the Royal British Legion. If there is an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Town, then all procedures may be cancelled at a moment’s notice. Thank you in advance for your support with these changes. visit www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or e: info@peacehavendirectory.co.uk

A chance to have your say! Have you ever found yourself in a position where you feel so strongly about something, that you really need to take a stand? Well, this is the position some parents find themselves in when it comes to the running of a local school.

If you feel strongly and would like to lend a hand, there are several forums set up to help you get started:

Peacehaven Heights Primary school has been in the spotlight quite a bit over the last few months, as it prepares to become an academy. I am lucky that my children were always in their final year when their schools underwent this transition. From what I can see as an outsider, the result is not necessarily a favourable one.

Facebook: Hands off Peacehaven Schools. Follow links to write letters and stay informed.

If you are a parent or a member of the community who likes to take an active role in education, there is a group of parents who want their voices heard. They want everyone's opinions and concerns taken into consideration, so they are concentrating on getting agreement to recruit their own headteacher and to appoint a Board of Governors.

Every letter helps! There is power in numbers.

Change is never easy and, I am sure all sides are working for what they think is best for the school, but at the end of the day, a school is a community establishment. Parents need to trust the people in charge and have a route to consultation if they are not happy.

What does it mean to properly hydrate? By Chris Odle Christopher Odle is a Personal Trainer with many years experience. He worked with me during the early years of the magazine and wrote articles for us. This months article is all about hydration. Water is an essential part of you. Actually, it's most of you. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. Among other functions, water is essential to smooth digestion and excretion, oxygen flow throughout the body (including the brain), temperature regulation, and tissue and joint lubrication. Are you thirsty? How do you know? If you drink too little you might: ● feel unsatisfied or not full after eating. ● lack muscle coordination and balance. ● feel brain fog or slow thinking. ● feel sluggish or fatigued. ● not recover efficiently from physical activity. Too much water and you might: ● feel overfull, bloated. ● urinate a lot (more than 6–8 times per day). When you drink the right amount of water, aka the ‘Goldilocks’ amount (for you), you'll feel more satisfied from meals, have sustained energy all day and sustained energy during long physical activity. You will have a clear head feeling and be well recovered from workouts.

That guideline can vary widely depending on the person, their lifestyle, and their diet. People who are more active, sweating more, are sick (or have other health situations) may need more water in order to stay hydrated. Some people may need less added water. Hydration doesn’t only come from water. In terms of a whole daily diet, hydration comes in many forms. For example, hydration also comes from coffee, tea, dairy milk and nut milk. And some water is in every beverage that you drink, and even in many foods that you eat (especially water-rich fruits and vegetables). Meaning, you won't necessarily need to drink 8 glasses of pure water in order to stay hydrated. That guideline changes based on your diet, your body, your activity level, and your environment. Based on what you already know about yourself and your routines, choose a starting baseline for what you feel you need. Then, pay attention to internal signals and adjust. Follow internal signals. Internal signals tell you how hungry or thirsty you feel, biological vs. psychological. Being able to read those signals accurately is what allows you to selfregulate to be able to competently satisfy your needs in the moment.

Are you hydrated? How do you know? There's one clear way to know if you've been drinking enough water. The colour of your urine is the most reliable indicator of your body's current hydration. A quick Google search for urine hydration chart will be a great guide, I'm happy to send you one I use with my clients if you need. (Also note that some food, medications, and supplements can cause changes in the colour of urine that are not necessarily related to hydration. For example, some supplements that have excess levels of vitamins or minerals may be excreted in urine and change its colour.) By the time you're assessing urine colour, you may have already felt some unwanted side effects of dehydration. To get ahead of hydration, here are two main ways to measure how much you need. The 1 is external guidelines and the 2ⁿ is Internal signals. Both are highly personal to the individual (you). ● Find your external guidelines. ● How much should I drink? ● What's enough for you? How will you know when you hit it (before you see your pee)? There's a familiar recommendation of 8 glasses of water per day. As a general standard, that's a useful reference to start with.

see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or

Think what your internal signals are. Then, calibrate that to the number of added glasses of water or beverages you drink each day. If you can match that ‘Goldilocks’ feeling of just right to the number of beverages that gets you there, you'll be able to practice hitting it consistently. That's your personal, experimentally-tested "enough". Pay attention by slowing down and tuning in. Learning what thirst feels like is essential to being able to self-regulate how much you eat. Thirst signals can easily be confused with hunger signals. If you can learn to differentiate between the two (i.e., what’s thirst and what’s hunger), you can be more confident in how much to eat and when.

(Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips - ACHILLES TENDON Many people suffer with tight Achilles tendons, possibly limiting their comfort and ability to walk easily and usually also involved in plantar fasciitis. It is possible to tear this tendon or completely rupture it, to cause inflammation (itis) or inflame the bursa (bursitis), particularly with low rubbing shoes.

Anatomy: The achilles tendon is a tough band of fibrous tissue connecting the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the heel (calcaneus). These large calf muscles unite into one band of tissue forming the achilles tendon. There are small sacs of fluid (bursae) that cushion the tendon at the heel. The achilles is the largest and strongest tendon in the body; tendons attach muscle to bone. When the calf muscles work, the achilles tendon pulls on the heel, allowing us to stand on our toes as in walking, jumping and running. This strong tendon is susceptible to injury, due to the high tensions placed on it, particular during certain sports and due to its limited blood supply.

A sudden total rupture in response to impact will be extremely painful and leave you unable to raise onto your toes or walk.

Achilles Injuries: Tear: there can be micro tears or large tears that cause pain, swelling and limited movement. These can occur gradually over time, or suddenly in response to an impact.

Diagnosis: Please see your doctor or physical therapist if you have an ongoing or serious issue with your achilles.

Rupture: a complete rupture of the tendon, usually makes a popping sound as it happens, accompanied by pain and swelling in the calf. This is a serious injury requiring surgery and long-term immobilisation and rehabilitation. It is worth paying attention to early tensions in the hope to avoid this extreme injury. Tendonitis: an inflammation of the tendon can occur from over activity, usually walking or running and can cause stiffness and pain in the tendon. Tendons usually get irritated in response to the tension of tight muscles pulling on them, causing inflammation where the tendon inserts into the bone. It is essential to pay attention to the muscles too. Peritendonitis: an inflammation of the tissue surrounding the tendon, above the heel. Tendinosis: thickening of the tendon without inflammation, usually from overuse or aging. This weakens the tendon leaving it prone to injury or rupture. Bursitis: irritation of the fluid filled sac that cushions the achilles, causing pain at the back of the heel. Symptoms: Pain and stiffness behind the ankle along the tendon, especially first thing in the morning. The symptoms usually come on gradually and occur while walking or running, especially on stairs or uphill; in the early stages this eases with rest. As with all inflammation, it may feel hot and swollen; it may feel tender to touch and in the longer term it may feel lumpy as scar tissues develops.

Causes: Basically, anything that places added strain on the tendon can cause symptoms. Common causes are misalignment and poor foot/ankle biomechanics, tight or weak calf muscles and poor or incorrect conditioning, overuse such as repetitive strain, repetitive uphill running or other stress that you are not properly conditioned and warmed up for. Also, incorrect footwear that places strain on the tendon by rubbing of positioning.

Self Help: If you have symptoms then rest from whatever is causing them, e.g. running or walking. Wear shoes with a small heal to take the pressure off the tendon, a heel lift may help and be sure your shoes do not rub or press on the painful area. Ice applied for 10-15 minutes can help to reduce the inflammation; use a bag of peas wrapped in a towel or a good spray from your pharmacy. Stretching the achilles and calves appropriately, without force and within your limits is beneficial, if not essential to good movement. I advise doing this before getting up in the morning or getting out of a chair as well as several times a day. Please watch my video on achilles stretches. There is something for everyone, with exercises standing, sitting and laying down and options for all levels of flexibility. Please only do what feels good and stay within your limits; remember that the key to stretching is listening to your body, backing off when you feel tension, approaching the tension gently and using the breathe to encourage the body to let go and release tension; stay in your comfort zone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnFEbIrb0lE&t=7s Treatment: Imaging may be required or even surgery, where there is rupture. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Determine the cause with detailed case history and examination. Adjusting ankle and foot bones, where appropriate, soft tissue and myofascial techniques, stretching, dry needling, possibly taping, home rehabilitation exercises; attention to postural habits and ergonomics as well as advice on sports usage. Check spinal segments with nerve roots that affect the lower limb. We are happy to advise you on your health matters.
