Welcome to the October 2019 edition. This month’s front cover is by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography. “I had fun trying to photograph this goat! He was very friendly up on the Tye with all the sheep.”
Contents
You may or may not be aware but we are on Facebook and the magazine can always be viewed there or on our website which has 6 months worth of back copies.
P40 Telscombe Civic Centre information
I have found a great resource on Facebook for Peacehaven, Telscombe and East Sussex which is Peacehaven Information! It provides you with up-to-date information of any problems in the surrounding area and people often post information about local activities. It is worth adding it to your favourites. September has been a strange month I feel with the usual governmental issues that shall not be named, marches and protests in Brighton town and all over the country for one issue or another and very bad weather abroad causing much destruction. I am very glad that we live where we live. Countryside one way, the Seaside the other and a big cliff to protect us, providing mother nature is kind to us. Life is always a gamble! Look out for the upcoming November edition as it will give you a lot of information regarding the ‘big C’ events and is always a bumper edition. Let me know early if you want anything in the magazine. The deadline is the 15 October but if I can have them as early as possible it avoids disappointment. Have a great month and remember ‘Keep Calm and carry on’ it may not always seem like it day to day but there is always a friendly face or a helping hand in Peacehaven & Telscombe Cliffs. Anne Briffett Editor November edition deadline is: 15 October 2019. The magazine can also be viewed on-line at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk. You can find us on Facebook. ean Views Three Words to save a life ....a brilliant new App One of the most frustrating parts of my job is finding a new customer's house from their directions. The most notorious one was in Ovingdean where the customer didn’t give me the house number because it was not necessary - just look for the fish pond in the front garden. They had forgotten the seven foot tall front brick wall they had recently had built (with a clearly displayed number on) prevented me from seeing the pond. Ambulance crews encounter this kind of thing all the time. Postal codes are not always the answer because in rural parts they cover huge areas with a single code. A concert promoter was fed up losing deliveries, artists and festival goers to temporary venues, like fields. With the help of a friend, who was a mathematician a simple mobile phone App was developed.

By Bruce Cameron-Stuart
The App divides the whole country into 3m by 3m squares then gives them a three word address. For example, the Meridian Mark on The Promenade is things.headless.wimp What3words can share the address with Google Maps, Waze and other SatNav programs to place you accurately. It is great for parties, festivals, country walks, or just being found! Locally the Fire and Ambulance Service use the system; apparently it has not reached Sussex Police yet. Stick it on your iPhone or Android Smartphone today Download what3words today......

The boot locker is now open for business Telscombe FC are starting a kit donation scheme… YOUR children grow so quickly it is likely they rarely wear out their football kit so the youth section of Peacehaven & Telscombe FC are starting a kit donation scheme. If you've got any unused kit in decent condition, please donate it to the football club. And then if you're in the market for new kit, a donation to the football club from between £5 and £9 will secure your star player a new pair of boots or goalie gloves or whatever is available. All the money raised will then go to buy new training equipment for the youth teams. Whenever you’re passing the club, please feel free to donate. If you need any further information please give Daniel Weston a call on: 07745 638441. Get involved today and support the youngsters of your football club. Girl footballers needed THIS season Peacehaven & Telscombe FC is fielding three girls’ teams, but they need more players. If your daughter would like to play organised football on a regular basis the club would love to hear from you.
By Pitchside View
There are three different age groups: under tens, under 12s and under 14s. And a point to bear in mind, your youngster can play up a year. In other words, if they are eight years old they can play under tens and so on. If you are interested in getting your daughter involved with one of the most foremost youth sets up in the county, please contact the following: Under tens: Adam Jones - 07866 566228. Under 12s: Ben Woolford – 07929 269823. Under 14s: Scott Brisckell – 07790 672463. This month’s home games are: Saturday October 5, Pagham. Saturday October 26, Lancing. Both games kick-off at 3pm. Entry to first team games is £7 for adults and £5 for over 65s. Under 18s get in for free.
Picture Right: Footballer Emily Jones
You can hire the club’s clubhouse from £150 by calling Sue Norwood on 07946 107041. Find out more and keep in touch with Peacehaven & Telscombe FC at www.peacehavenfc.co.uk on Twitter and Facebook.

It has raised beds, companion seating, a greenhouse, trees and shrubs. Friends of Downlands Court would like to make more of the garden. They have recently raised funds to incorporate a sensory garden and are planning to start visits from a local school once a month to share gardening tasks and enjoy the garden together. They hold a garden meeting on the first Thursday of each month in the lounge and discuss what can be done to make the garden better for the residents. Downlands Court welcome people who live in the community to join in many of their activities. They would particularly welcome people who are interested in getting involved in the garden to: ● come along and offer help in the garden ● get involved when the young people come from the school ● come along to garden meetings on the first Thursday of the month ● or if you have experience of gardening but have physical limitations just come along to offer advice. St Laurence Church in Telscombe Village There has been a church in Telscombe Village since at least 966 when a charter of that date confirms the gift of land in Telscombe and its church by King Edgar to the New Minster at Winchester. The present flint church, however, was first built in the mid-twelfth century, with the north aisle and chapel and the tower being added at the end of that century. It has some fine wall-paintings which were added in 1905 as part of the refurbishment of the church gifted by Ambrose Gorham.
church. Enraged the prefect ordered that Laurence be burnt alive on a gridiron. In the midst of his torture Laurence is reputed to have joked ‘Turn me over; I am done on this side!’. The church holds a service of Holy Communion every Sunday at 11:00 am, followed by refreshments served in the church, to which all are warmly invited.
The church is dedicated to St Laurence who was one of the seven deacons who served the church in Rome during the mid-third century and was responsible for caring for the goods of the church and distributing its alms among the poor. In 257 the Roman Emperor Valerian began a persecution of the church and the following year ordered that all bishops, priests, and deacons should be put to death. Seeing that his death was imminent, Laurence distributed all the wealth of the church to the poor, sick and disabled people of Rome. When he was ordered by the prefect of Rome to hand over the riches in his care, Laurence gathered up these persons and presented them to the prefect telling him that these were the true treasures of the
Seaford Hard of Hearing Club St James’ Trust, Blatchington Road, Seaford We meet on the 1 Friday of each month, 2:15 pm Lip Reading Classes are held on Tuesdays, 10:00 am - 11:45 am On Friday 6 September, our club celebrated its 60 Anniversary with afternoon tea. We were very honoured to have two very distinguished guests attend. David Allam, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex and Seaford Mayor, Nazish Adil. Their presence at our humble but none-the-less remarkable occasion, was very much appreciated by our members and we thank them for taking the time to come along. Former club organiser for many years, Brian Carter, joined us and other former members and friends attended the afternoon. We were entertained by Pamela Marsh who sang us through the 50’s and 60’s. All in all we had a thoroughly enjoyable celebratory tea. We have a new Club Chair, Jayne Marshall and we welcome her enthusiasm to help us to be able to continue doing what we do. Primarily this is to offer a friendly once a month ‘meet up’, to support see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or

Article (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Dog Walking Issues
As a nation, we are animal lovers; we love our fur family and want to take good care of them. What about the impact on our bodies of an activity such as walking or beloved dogs? Of course weather appropriate clothes are important, rainwear Problems from walking your pooch Some of the issues are year round, others are seasonal such as the terrain, the weather, the livestock and their young where we are walking. Many of my patients have injuries and aches and pains from issues around dog walking. COMMON PHYSICAL ISSUES Many of the physical issues from dog walking relate to slips, trips and falls; other common issues are from a dog pulling on the lead, lifting heavy dogs in and out of the car when they are no longer able to jump and also carrying an injured dog; even if the dog is small we are probably dealing with emotions that make the task trickier. Issues such as tennis or golfer's elbow, rotator cuff and shoulder joint pain as well as forearm, wrist and hand pain can result from a dog pulling on the lead either suddenly or repeatedly, this can also pull up into the neck and back. Strained back or neck, sprained ankle and twisted knee can result from slips, trips and falls as well as awkward lifting and bending, e.g. to pick up a ball repeatedly. WEATHER, SEASONS AND TERRAIN Each season has it's issues with dog walking. Icy or wet ground makes it more likely that you can slip, trip or fall. When the weather is cold you may be more likely to get muscle aches and pains and we are certainly all stiffer in the morning than in the evening anyway. When the weather is hot, we need to keep ourselves and our dogs well hydrated and may need to go out earlier to avoid the intense heat. Dry ground may have more loose stones that we can trip on. We need to be aware when there is low lying strong sunlight that it can blind drivers, making it more difficult to spot walkers at certain angles. It is also important to know your own and your dog's limitations of distance and energy for a walk. FOOTWEAR AND ATTIRE Blisters can be a problem if your shoes do not fit well. It is also important to have appropriate shoes for the weather and terrain and often something with good support to help keep you steadier. Whilst wellies help keep you dry they do not always offer good support. If you have issues with over pronation or falling arches, a good foot support can help the alignment of many joints in the body by starting with good foot alignment.
in the wet as well as hats, sunglasses and sun cream in the heat. KEEPING FIT FOR DOG WALKING We need to be fit to walk our dogs like any other physical activity. Even though dog walking is itself an exercise, we need to keep ourselves strong, fit and supple to keep it going all year round. Strengthening and stretching exercises are important. The whole body can be affected by slips, trips and falls, a dog pulling on the lead, lack of upper back strength with a big dog on the lead, lifting large dogs, incorrect lifting, lack of core strength. TIPS: Back, Neck and Shoulders: It is important to learn correct lifting technique to keep the back strong and also how to use your upper back muscles around the shoulder blade to have better strength and control in your arm and prevent the tension going to the low back, the neck or the arm from a lead pull. Good core strength is crucial for a healthy low back and in fact for the whole body biomechanics. Learn to stretch well. Elbows, Forearms, Wrists and Hands: There are some good stretching exercises for forearms, wrists and hands to release tension and also build strength. Avoid gripping the lead too tight, try one that wraps around the wrist for extra control. Hips, Knees, Ankles and Feet: Strength and flexibility are important for keeping active. Learn to stretch hip flexors, hamstrings, butt muscles, calves, feet and ankles. Wear appropriate footwear and orthotics if needed. Keep the thighs strong and avoid twisting the knee suddenly or repeatedly. Summer update from Greenhavens The Greenhavens network was set up to support community group volunteers who are protecting your green spaces between Seaford and Telscombe. The network has been very busy over the last few months, with lots more organisations joining us. In June we held our very first AGM at YHA South Downs in the beautiful Southease countryside. Here we shared food cooked by SCDA who run free cooking courses in Newhaven. Then we had a tour of the new wild flower meadows that are supporting honey bee hives, and other pollinators. Our volunteers even starred in a video, taken by drone above the meadows! The biggest achievement was to launch a brand new website where you can find out more about the different projects in our area. This has contact details of all our projects (now more than 90) and lots of stories about the positive projects in your area. The website has various themes.
local parks and gardens. There are even some suggestions for walks in our beautiful countryside that you can access by train. Gardeners will enjoy reading about our open gardens, local allotments and enjoy our gardening tips (including how to make fantastic compost). Under our food theme, you can read about the community gardens in our area, and get tips on foraging and cooking. Find out too, how groups in Greenhavens encourage “learning together” with projects where children can enjoy engaging with nature. Above all this is a community network and website, and we really want local groups to get involved, and have their say on our green future. Please do get in touch! You can find the website here www.greenhavens.network
Under conservation you can read about our community orchards, skylarks, cuckoos and National Meadows Day. We also had lots of local stories about what projects are doing for bees – to celebrate “Bees Needs” week. Under health and wellbeing, you can read about initiatives to keep fit and well including Seaford park run, health walks and local cycling initiatives. We also celebrated “Love Parks” week so you can learn more about improvements to

Walking a Cammino has become a very popular and rewarding adventure. Two television programmes’ have followed celebrities (albeit minor ones) on their journeys along the Santiago de Compostela in Spain and the Via Francigena which was a holy medieval pilgrimage road to Rome from Canterbury. “Priscilla and I decided to avoid the crowds and go the way of St Francis of Assisi, Cammino di Francesco. We started in Assisi and headed out at 5:30 am into the Umbrian Hills to try and get a decent amount of walking in before the temperature rose above 30 degrees. Our first stop at 7:00 am was a favourite spot that St Francis came to pray. Nestling among trees with a stunning view down to the valley below we rested and prayed, before setting out on 6 and a half more hours of walking to a walled village called Trevi resting on top of a hill. We met no one on the way, we walked through stunning scenery and panoramic views, with the beauty of God’s creation just oozing out of every turn. (Trees, wild flowers, butterflies, mountain streams etc) Our final mile took us through beautiful olive groves and straight into a well-earned little café for a pasta lunch! And so, this day became a pattern for 5 days of walking covering 85 miles. (a rest day had after 3 days due to cuts on my back – a rubbing rucksack) This was part of our Sabbatical after 16 years of being a vicar. We highly recommend this Cammino walk to you refreshing to the soul, taxing on the old body, but completely beautiful and refreshing.”

Local charity launches 30 Anniversary Grand Raffle with £1,000 cash top prize! For the first time ever, Care for the Carers is running a special countywide raffle, to celebrate 30 years of supporting unpaid carers locally and raise vital funds to continue their work. The charity supports local people who look after a relative or friend who couldn’t manage without their support. The pressures of caring can take their toll, with many carers suffering health problems, high levels of stress and being financially disadvantaged as a result of caring for a loved one. The raffle was launched at the charity’s recent Carers Voices Forum, held on 30 August at the Civic Centre in Uckfield, attended by carers and local groups from across East Sussex. Chief Executive, Jennifer Twist, says, “We wanted to do something fun, to celebrate our 30 Anniversary and give back to the community. We contacted local businesses to ask whether they could help and were overwhelmed by the response. Over 40 East Sussex businesses have given a prize – this really is a ‘Grand’ raffle! It’s been humbling to see how much Care for the Carers is valued, and how important the business community feels it is to build a Carer Friendly East Sussex.”
