4 ������� ���� Welcome to the October edition. The front cover page has been very kindly supplied by Colette Langton of Colette Langton Photography. This picture was taken on Telscombe Tye of a very friendly goat who came to say hello and posed for the camera. Colette thought he was lovely. My Son got married on the 16�� of September and Colette kindly stepped in at the last minute to do the wedding photography, after they got let down due to lockdown delays. Colette was fantastic, she was productive but in an unobtrusive way and got everyone organised and enjoying the photography experience. I would highly recommend her services to anyone. I have been helping at the Community Orchard over the last few weeks, we have been raking up the grass that had been cut, litter picking and mending the enclosures around the apple trees. There is only a handful of us at the moment, any help would be appreciated. There is so much to do for people of all ages and physical ability all year round, so why not get in touch with me at info@peacehavendirectory.co.uk or join the Facebook group Peacehaven Community Orchard. It is great to work in the fresh air and enjoy good company. I am getting fitter each time I go and it feels good to give something back. I have felt a bit down recently so it helps with that too. Finally we are starting to fill out after a very tricky 18 months, Peacehaven & Telscombe residents and businesses are fantastic and I would like to thank you all for sticking with us. ean Views Zoom meetings... ...a time saver or time waster? I recently popped round to see an acquaintance for lunch. Like many people this summer he was still working from home. Unfortunately, he was double booked with a work meeting, so he made me a sly coffee whilst in the middle of an online business meeting. I quietly stayed out of the view of the webcam and watched. As a one-man band I have not been to a staff meeting since 2007. The Zoom meeting had a familiar look. Initially I thought I had seen this look from adverts and dramas. Then it struck me: Celebrity Squares. Once the idea was planted, it became difficult to shift. I was fascinated how theatrical people were when it was their turn. I could see why people find Zoom meetings so tiring. With a physical meeting, only the main participants are visible. In a Zoom meeting everyone is permanently visible – no sly crosswords now.

The meeting was about employing an IT contractor to do a one-off project. The meeting veered towards farce when the legal representative did not want the outsider to hear any confidential information without a signed contract. Several pointed out, without knowing the problem how could he pitch the solution. It took a meeting for a dozen “stakeholders” to appoint one contractor for a three-week job. As I crept away I thought I am glad no-one invites me to their Zoom meetings.

Peacehaven Art Club Looking for new members We are a local Art Club based at the Evangelical Church Hall, Mayfield Ave, Peacehaven on a Friday morning 10:00 - 12.00.

A very friendly bunch with lots of help for beginners or left to your own devices if you prefer. Not just an art club, we are all friends usually with numerous social activities including a summer garden and Christmas party. A coach trip is organised each year as well as demonstrations with visiting artists and workshops by members, which we are hoping to resume next year. Pre lockdown included demonstrations of Portraiture, Watercolour and Chinese Brush painting and workshops drawing, Encaustic Painting and a glass artist. Lockdown Bears Although Joy Ashton and her “Southern Stomp” Line dancers haven’t been dancing for the last 18 months the grass has not been growing under her feet. Using scraps of felt and sewing needles, she has produced over 80 Christmas bears to hang on your Christmas tree, and all proceeds going to a very good local cause, the Community Foodbank and Supermarket. All bears are individually made with loving care including the popular ‘Rupert Bear’ and ‘Paddington’; with the bears having raised £200 so far which will be used to buy extra Christmas treats and gifts for the local charity, things are looking really positive for Christmas this year. During lockdown Joy has been volunteering at the newly opened “Community Supermarket”, an extension of the local foodbank which is available for individuals and families to come along every week and choose a selection of foods and toiletries.
There are no specific charges for anything that is selected; this type of provision is ‘Pay as you Feel’, and it is entirely up to the individual. We know that some weeks money has to be prioritised for household bills, but here is always plenty of foodstuffs for people to help themselves to and all of the food is used rather than wasted – so a real win win situation! A new addition this month has been the recycling of school uniforms which means that uniforms that have become too small were washed, pressed now available and ready for a new term at school! Although “Southern Stomp” are back dancing and busily preparing for a new “2 Left Feet” beginners class, Joy is keen to continue her volunteering work in the local community and really enjoys her new weekly role; so now you know, when she finishes dancing each week, she puts her feet up and gets her sewing kit out!

Greenhaven’s 'Harvest Festival' Super Saturday Seed Swap' On Saturday the 23�� October the Hillcrest Centre will be the location of the Greenhaven’s First Havens Seed Swapping Event. Greenhaven’s will be asking its members and locals to come along with any seeds for swapping and sharing to make our green spaces blooming marvellous in the future. We will be open from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. There will be local craft stalls to browse and activities for the children and the café will be open for refreshments. Greenhaven’s Network is a network of over 100 community groups that join together, as and when to, deliver great projects across the Lewes District. Through sharing skills and knowledge, we help each other, connecting people and wildlife. Many of the supporters and local charities will be in attendance to promote the great work they do across the Havens. SLIPPED DISC This is a common term referring to a condition describing the loss of normal structure and shape of the spinal discs. It is actually defined as a herniated disc, prolapsed disc or bulging disc and it can be extremely painful if it presses on nerves. Slipped discs are a widespread problem and whilst difficult to treat, they can respond very well to treatment.
See a GP urgently or go to A&E if you have back pain and you: got it after a serious accident, such as a car accident; have numbness around your bottom or genitals, lose feeling in one or both legs, can't pee or can't control when you pee or poo, have a very high temperature or you feel hot and shivery, have unexplained weight loss, have a swelling in your back.
Anatomy: The discs between each of the vertebrae are pads that act like shock absorbers in the spinal column by keeping the vertebrae separated when there is impact from activity. They also serve to protect the nerves that run down the middle of the spine and intervertebral discs. Each disc is made up of a tyre-like, tough outer band called the annulus fibrosus and a gellike inner substance called the nucleus pulposus.
Treatment: The most common treatments of slipped discs include pain relief, rest, heat packs or a tens machine and exercise – it may be painful at first but it is important to keep moving. Gentle exercise that doesn’t put too much strain on your back helps to maintain strength and stops you getting too stiff.
Symptoms: These vary depending on the location of the disc weakness and whether the prolapse/herniation interferes with a pain sensitive structure. The most common symptom is pain, usually occurring in the lower back, but also in the neck. If the disc presses on the sciatic nerve, you may also feel pain radiating into the hips and legs; or radiating into the arm, if in the neck. There may be numbness or tingling in the limbs and shoulders, or possibly muscle weakness and you may struggle to straighten your back or neck. Sometimes the pain can start in the back or neck then seem to disappear only to be replaced with leg or arm pain or vice versa. Although rare, a complete herniation can cause paralysis of the foot and leg and loss of control of the bladder and bowel. Not all slipped discs cause symptoms and some people will never know they have slipped a disc. Causes: The disc wall usually breaks down over a long period of time as a result of abnormal loading through the disc. This can be a result of poor spinal mechanics, poor muscle support, poor posture, past injury, or bad working habits. This can happen because of ageing, over exercising, lifting heavy objects the wrong way, vibration from driving or operating machinery, being inactive/sedentary or overweight. Diagnosis: This is usually based on symptoms, medical history and other health conditions as well as any obvious causes, such as accidents. Diagnosis may include physical examination, X-ray, or MRI scan.
See a GP if your painkillers aren't helping or the pain is no better after a month. They might prescribe a stronger painkiller, a steroid injection or a muscle relaxant to use in the short term. If your symptoms don't get better your GP might recommend further tests, like an MRI scan. In more rare cases, pain relieving injections and surgery can also be used. Osteopathic treatment can be very effective if caught in the first 6 weeks and your condition is not too severe. Prevention: Maintain good back strength and posture, always use a proper lifting technique, exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. Avoid smoking as nicotine weakens the disc tissue. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine the spine, neck and all areas leading to the site of pain; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength and functionality and assess motor nerve pathways. Consider the effect of the condition on the whole body. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests. Treat to reduce any swelling, muscle tension and pain and improve joint alignment. Advice regarding specific strengthening and stretching exercises as well as postural/ lifestyle advice. Treatment may include manipulation, deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, fascial techniques, dry needling, etc. We are happy to advise you on your health matters.

Do you like taking holiday’s or do you find the whole thing far too stressful? When we have young families, the preparations seem out of proportion to the event and in many cases, for me anyway, I would have preferred to stay at home and just have day trips! Men of course have an entirely different idea about it, or mine did anyway. But as time goes by, the annual, and then in retirement even several holidays a year take on a new meaning. Once it was to chill and relax, maybe on a beach in the sun but eventually beaches have little call, and it is the cities with their amazing buildings that thrill and enthuse. This has been the second year that travel has been difficult if not impossible for many, so we have looked more at our own country, this is no bad thing as we live in such an amazing place, and it is time that we learned to appreciate it. It is also a time to reflect on our carbon footprint and do we really need to go abroad, with all the added pollution air travel entails, not to mention the covid test and possible quarantine on our return.
If we had consistently good weather, people from around the world would flock here to see the British Isles; from Scotland to the Isles of Scilly, the Lake District, Yorkshire, and Cornwall and more. The countryside, ancient monuments, grand houses, and estates, are all well worth a visit. We are so lucky, and we don’t have the devastating hurricanes, forest fires and tsunamis that occur in other places around the globe. We in the Townswomen’s Guild are working to help the sustainability of our planet and doing our best to save resources, reduce air travel and generally decrease our carbon footprint.
