Horticultural Society Club & Show We meet every 3rd Monday of the month in the Anzac Room, Meridian Centre, Peacehaven 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Entrance to the meeting is £1.00 which includes refreshments. We have a variety of talks with guest speakers including Container Planting, Vegetable Gardens & Keeping Gardens Growing. The society also arrange coach trips, the favourite being RHS Wisley. We hold coffee mornings at the Meridian Centre and have a stall at the Peacehaven & Telscombe Summer Fair. We had a table at the councils party to celebrate the Queens Jubilee. Membership for the year is £5.00 per person or £8.00 per couple, this also entitles you to use the Trading Hut where you can purchase a variety of gardening items at cost.

Entry to the show is 50p or free with schedule. It opens at 10.30am with an auction of produce at 2.30pm. There are various categories including cut flowers, flower arranging, vegetables, arts & crafts, baking,photography and a childrens competition (ages 4 to 16) So come along with your friends and have refreshments at the cafe and treat yourself to a plant from the plant stall. Solid State Discs - An Update Do they actually make any difference in the real world?

A few issues ago I wrote an article about Solid State Drives - which are basically Hard DiscsSwith no moving parts, they use banks of computer memory to store programs and data. Since the original article I have had a chance to build some systems based around these drives. The first thing you notice is the size, most SSDs are the size of a laptop hard drive, so if they are for use in a PC case they need an adapter to fit in the larger format 3.5" hard drive bays. The very latest computer cases now make provision for the 2.5" disc drive size. The motherboards I have used have automatically picked up the right configuration, no poking around with obscure BIOS settings. The moment of truth, will it work? To date I have had no problems but I have read plenty of horror stories online. No moving parts, the silence is unnerving. The fun begins; loading software is no longer a long slow slog, a Windows install is a third of the time, updates install in under half the time. The vital but tedious software loading stage is becoming bearable. The customers notice the speedy start up and quick responsiveness, it makes systems feel faster than they actually are. Small disc capacity is an issue but pairing with a large disc for data seems the answer. Technology has made its first step forward for years... LOCAL BUSINESS

Local Charity Fundraiser Carries the Olympic Torch Former Peacehaven resident, Michael Burnage MBE, was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch, in recognition of his considerable charity work. Michael carried the torch for a leg in Eastbourne on Tues- “As every day passes it is suddenly becoming very real,” day 17th July. said Michael. “The whole family are extremely excited, especially the children.” Michael was selected as a ‘local hero’ to represent his home, after selflessly dedicating years to helping others Michael took his place among 8000 Torch bearers who less fortunate than himself, despite his own considerawere selected ahead of the Game’s that opened on 27�� ble health problems. July. “When I found out that I had been chosen to carry the torch, I was absolutely thrilled”, Michael told Peacehaven Directory. “To be involved in such an event is a once in a lifetime opportunity” “As a teenager I remember watching the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, at some unearthly hour, in a holiday cottage in North Cornwall,” recalled Michael. “Never for one minute did I think I would ever be involved in such a spectacle.” After suffering many years of debilitating ill health, in 2000 Michael was registered as disabled and forced to retire from his career. Faced with an uncertain future, with the help of medication and a great deal of determination, he threw himself into raising money for various local charities across the city.

In particular, he has raised many tens of thousands of pounds for the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, which has enabled them to purchase vital life saving equipment such as incubators and ventilators. To acknowledge Michael’s considerable efforts on behalf of the sick children of Sussex, Rockinghorse made him their first ever Ambassador in 2008. Michael’s charitable efforts were also recognised in 2006 by the Queen when she awarded him the MBE in her New Years Honours list. In 2007 Michael had the extreme misfortune to suffer a severe brain injury after an unprovoked assault left him unconscious. To then compound matters, in 2009 he suffered a heart attack which left him requiring surgery. Despite these immense setbacks, he continued to fund raise where possible, and offer help and assistance to anybody who needed it.

Let Local Resident, Marianna give you the gift of youth I was very lucky this month to be invited to try a special treatment courtesy of Marianna Dragojevic who is behind the business Anti Aging Therapy. Marianna’s ethos is to give you younger looking skin with effects that last, without painful invasive treatments… The treatment I was introduced to was cold laser treatment. First the face is prepared by using either steam or hot towels and your skin is cleansed. This is necessary because an ingredient called Hyaluronic Acid is applied to your face but because the molecule of Hyluronic acid is bigger then the molecule of the pore of the skin they need to be opened a little first. Hyaluronic Acid is produced naturally by your body and is a major component of our skin. Marianna told me that by the time you are 40 your skin only has half of the Hyaluronic Acid it needs and this is why the ageing process starts to take effect. The acid is applied to your skin and massaged in, then you are given small goggles to wear as the laser can be damaging to the eyes. Even though you have the goggles on and are advised to keep your eyes closed, you can see light, I saw a lot of red, some people see white or yellow but it is nothing to worry about. Marianna used the laser over different parts of my skin, there was no pain or burning of any kind, towards the end there was a little tickling feeling. Finally I was given a small water massage and invited to see the results. When I looked in the mirror I saw a plump smooth face, it felt very soft.

Before you take an intake of breath I need to tell you that in London they are charging in excess of £200 per treatment. Normally you would need 6 treatments which Mariana charged at £550 if paid for up front. After this the treatment becomes a top up decided upon between yourself and Marianna. The treatment is very safe and the cold laser and hyaluronic acid have healing properties and both are used to treat injuries and scars. I would recommend it if you are serious about your appearance and want to improve or maintain what you have. Beauty is about confidence and this treatment would really make you feel it.

I am actually blessed with having genes that give me a very youthful appearance even though I am 38, looking back I don’t remember a family member that had terribly wrinkly skin. Marianna confirmed this but worked very hard to reduce the large pores that I have around my nose area and I really saw a difference in the rosacea that I have started to develop. The redness had gone and a more even skin tone was apparent. The few small lines around my eyes were smooth and the lines that have started to develop on my forehead were smoothed out as well. The treatment continues to work because the acid affects the skin’s ability to retain water, but you have to drink lots of water and keep yourself hydrated. Because the effects are gradual you will never have that frozen face look and because it does not involve injections and such like, you will never have to hide away for a time with a red swollen face.

Cooking made easy

Healthy Living Taking Time to Cook Sometimes having to work long hours can mean that we do not have time to look after ourselves. Recently I have found myself skipping meals, especially lunch when I am busy on the computer and on a deadline for the magazine, then I binge the rest of the day and not always on good things… One thing I love is rice. I don’t have a pressure cooker and it can be a bit hit and miss to cook if you do it on the hob and needs watching; until one day whilst surfing the net I found that you could cook it in the oven and add anything to it in the one pot to make a delicious healthy and satisfying meal. To make: Get a casserole pot and put in one cup of rice per person to two cups of water at this point I quickly chop up a bit of onion, garlic, mushrooms, tomatoes, celery, prawns, etc, any combination you can think of or have in the store cupboard. Add a knob of butter, I love to use some herbs or chilli flakes etc and a pinch of salt. Put this into an oven, about gas mark 5 and leave to cook for about 50 minutes. Go and carry on doing what you need to do and wait for the beep of the oven. When you lift the lid you will have fluffy, non sticky savoury rice waiting for you to dish up. If any is left over you can eat it cold another day or re-heat until very hot and add other things to it like left over meat, eggs or vegetables for a stir fry. All members of my family young and old love this dish and you can adapt it according to the season and add different things to boost your health. Use garlic and ginger and slices of lemon if you have a cold/sore throat, ginger also helps with pregnancy nausea, this will be a great meal because you can eat little an often which will also help to alleviate pregnancy sickness and stop the build up of acid. Peppermint leaves are great if you have any tummy problems or suffer with heart- burn. Use chicken stock and cooked chicken and garlic if it is flu season. Some chilli will improve circulation and can ease aching muscles. The list is endless and just takes a little thought whilst choosing your shopping or considering what to grow in your garden.

Local Person - Laura Huxtable Local person Laura Huxtable would like to introduce herself, family and her new business venture that I think any parent or carers with young children would be interested to hear about.

What is your name and where do you live? My name is Laura Huxtable and I live in Seaview Avenue in Peacehaven with my Fiancee Arnie, gorgeous son Zaiden and two beautiful daughters, Jasmin and Skyla. What do you like best about the part of Peacehaven you live in? We live on a building site, which most people would hate, but we think is great because my son Zaiden loves to watch the diggers. Most days we go on a digger hunt around the site. What projects are you currently working on? At the moment, most of my time is taken up, with creating songs and making props for my new music group. I have researched the various developmental stages of babies and am trying to create exciting, fun, sensory songs which involve using bright colours, different textures, smells and sounds, and are age appropriate for the babies. Do you have any hobbies you would like to tell us about? My main hobby is football. My fiancee runs an under 16's team and i really enjoy going to watch the games and support him and his younger brother, who also plays for the team. What is your involvement in the Community? Although there are baby groups running in the area already, I want to create and offer something different and quite specific. I am a firm believer that interaction with babies is an essential part of parenting and I want to combine this with music, and create a fun, safe environment where parents / carers can to get to know their babies and enjoy spending time with them. What is your favourite film? My favourite film is ' Fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe,' I have watched it so many times, but still love it. What was the last book you read? The last book I read was ' Not without my sister ' a biography by three sisters who escaped a cult, not easy reading but very interesting. Any claim to fame? My only claim to fame is that I got chosen to appear next to the presenter in the opening shot of Top of the pops, years ago when I was a teenager.

Why I Love The Goodwood Festival of Speed… I love the Goodwood Festival of Speed, because you can get to meet lots of inspirational people like Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and new to the event (for 2012) Sebastian Vettel. You may be surprised to hear that the Festival is also not just about racing cars as it also has shows that includes BMX, trails bikes (both with and without engines), mini motocross and freestyle motocross. But I really like the paddock where you can see all the Formula 1 cars! My Dad and I go to the top of the track, because this is where you can meet all the drivers. This year I met Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button and lots of other drivers. Over the last few years I have been able to sit in the Le Mans winning Peugeot, many rally and race cars and a few years ago I got to talk to the World Rally Champion Colin McRae.

Wild Flowers spotted

A wild Affair

Have you seen the beautiful flowers that are growing on the banks of the Brighton Road, A259. After an e-mail from local resident Lorraine Seed and observing people stopping to take photos of this beautiful spectacle we decided to investigate where they had come from… These flowers have been planted by the Peacehaven Town Council. The Town Clerk Kevin Kingston explained “Peacehaven Town Council want to brighten up the entrances to the town and along the busy A259 and to do this have launched a planter sponsorship scheme and have carried out a wild flower seeding project on the coast road as you enter Peacehaven from Newhaven. As a result of this work we now have a wonderful display of wild flowers on the highway verge as you enter Peacehaven from Newhaven – unfortunately we could not complete the whole area due wet ground conditions and a water leak that has now been repaired – however it is planned that we seed the wet area next year. This project has been carried out and paid for by the Town Council with matched funding from the big parks project”. We were also informed by Deborah Donovan of Communities House that they were planted a couple of months ago with the help of the Peacehaven Guides and Peacehaven Horticultural Society. We asked local resident Matt Hammond to take a photo of them so they could appear on our front cover. I think he has done a great job as always and we would like to extend our thanks to him. If you do see or know of something happening in Peacehaven, please send us a message and we will follow it up if we can. “The Young Mayor of Peacehaven presented us with a cheque for £1,636. This money is to be used for the benefit of Peacehaven families. We are taking a minibus from the Children's Centre to Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum in August”.

“Back in the May edition we announced we had been given the use of a top of the range caravan and invited families to apply. We can announce it is fully booked for the summer holidays by local families. There are still some weeks available for Sept/Oct, if anyone is interested.
