Welcome to the August edition Well Anne is away at the moment so I’m standing in as editor - a job I haven’t done on the Peacehaven Directory since the end of 2011. My usual job is as editor of The Deans Magazine, which of course goes out to The Deans area Saltdean through to Roedean - in that publication we have a regular local history feature, which has been interesting and at times mildly controversial, but always read. It would be great if there is anyone in the Peacehaven or Telscombe Cliffs area who has an interest in local history and would be willing to submit occasional articles and pictures to us, or if you have another interest which you think our readers would like to hear about then we would still love to hear from you. In case anyone hasn’t seen it yet there is a brand new and very exciting new shop in the Meridian Centre. It is a traditional sweet shop and based on their range and friendly staff deserve to very well indeed. Check it out if you get the chance, if you like sweets I don’t think you will be disappointed. We would like to apologise for a bit of a mix up in our July edition where we incorrectly referred to Peacehaven United F.C. As Peacehaven & Telscombe F.C. The slow death of DAB? How indifference is killing UK Digital Radio.... Digital Audio Broadcasts (DAB) started officially in 1995, the blueprint laid down then is slowly stifling the service today.

S is poorer than the Our DAB service predates MP3; so the consequent sound FM radio that it is meant to ultimately replace. Other countries which introduced digital radio later transmit DAB+ which uses AAC+ as the coding system allowing more stations with better-than-FM sound quality . A number of digital stations can share a narrow band of radio frequency. The higher the sound quality, the fewer stations can be fitted in. The BBC created a multiplex for its national stations; when new digital stations were added in 2002 the quality of the others was reduced to fit them into the available bandwidth. Quantity over quality. A national commercial multiplex also exists but this is so profits led, that the current situation is becoming farcical. When "Team Rock" was added in June, the only way to create space was to make two existing commercial stations mono. Radio stations on DAB are typically lower quality than when retransmitted on Sky, Freesat, Freeview or online. The local multiplexes are best described as varied. UK analogue radio is due to de switched off by 2019. Money will be raised from selling the vacated frequencies. Some of the proceeds should be reinvested in simulcasting DAB+ alongside DAB and legislating for a minimum sound quality. At the current rate digital radio switchover will leave us with the poorest sound quality since the late 1940s

Peacehaven United Football Club

Peacehaven United F.C. After incorrectly naming one of our local clubs in the July article, we felt the only way to do them justice was to run an updated article for Peacehaven United Football Club this month… We are currently looking for sponsorship for our football team as we have just introduced a third team, consisting of nearly 45 members based in the Peacehaven area. We travel all around Mid-sussex and Crawley, Generating exposure for you through visuals in kit logos and social media. Our First team has just been promoted to the Premier league and our 2ⁿ� team has also been promoted we have a strong foundation to be very successful and would love you to be a part of our future success. This is a short history of Peacehaven United Football Club Peacehaven United FC originated from Peacehaven Pirates, a club for local youths run by their fathers, and distinct from the County team, and formed at the end of the 1970’s. As the youth teams got older, and the club became established, the parents involved decided to form an adult team of the same name, and joined the Brighton Football League in Division 6. Promotion followed, as did becoming Division 5 champions. The winning of the Coronation Cup in the season 1988/89 came about as the youth team members had become old enough to play adult football, and progressed to the “Dads” team, which heralded a name change to AFC Peacehaven. We continued in the Brighton League until deciding to play in the Mid-Sussex Football League at the commencement of the 1993/94 season. It was at this time that the Club changed its name to the current one. Peacehaven United started in Division 4, gaining quick promotion to Division 3 and then 2. Having established ourselves in Division 2, the pinnacle of our Club’s history came at the end of the 1996/97 season, when we reached the final of the Sussex Junior Cup under the long-serving management of Tony Mills. There are still 2 players from the squad for that final that are currently playing for the club. We followed up this suc-

cess the next season by putting together a run of 10 wins and a draw in our last 11 matches, securing promotion to Division 1. With several long-standing players together with another local club folding and their players coming to us, we had one brief season in 2007/08 of running 2 teams, with our second team winning Division 7. We are in the 3�� season of running 2 teams again who are currently in division 7, and have provided the club with a strong squad of players. Having won the Edgar German Cup in 2011 under the management of Richard NELSON, then winning promotion to division 1, Peacehaven United FC followed this up in the 2011/12 season with a successive promotion, with our first ever winning of Division 1. After a successful 10 years as manager Richard passed over the reins to a long-standing player, Mark SHUTT, who is our current manager. With the addition of some younger players since winning the Edgar German Cup 9 and 2 years ago, including several having come through from the Peacehaven & Telscombe FC under 18 county team and 3 Dad/Son combinations to continue the tradition of the club, the future for Peacehaven United FC is looking promising with Mark SHUTT, a UEFA qualified coach, now the club’s Manager, and an established second team being managed by Scott BURNS, and the introduction of a third team next season with several other loyal club members volunteering their help to make our club a success. Local author - Richard McQuillan

Selecting the Stories Richard McQuillan, a Peacehaven resident and local author talks about his new book, telling us a little of what it is about and what lead him to write it. Having rediscovered my childhood passion for reading in 1997 whilst travelling in Italy and Greece, it wasn’t long before I felt the urge to begin writing. I guess I started around the turn of the millennium, but writing something I could feel satisfied with, on the other hand, didn’t happen overnight. A lot of long hours have gone in to the making of the nine stories I have chosen. The stories in this collection are a culmination of, what I consider, to be some of my best short stories from around thirteen years of writing. It helps, of course, if one has led an interesting life, and mine (so far!) has certainly been full of epic highs and miserable lows, as well as a wealth of travelling experiences. I have tried to bring a taste of these experiences to life in this collection which I hope give it more of a cosmopolitan flavour than most short story collections around. For me though, being an avid reader myself, it is ALL about the writing – the quality of the prose itself – and this is something I try to practice every day. Books shouldn’t just tell a story from start to finish, telling you what

happened; a good book should make you feel a certain way too, as well as living with you a long time after you’ve finished reading it. It is a competitive world out there and there is always a temptation to try to write something purely for profit, to write something with instant appeal; but I have always tried to stay true to myself. I truly believe that if the writing is good enough then it will appeal to enough readers to be successful. Pleasingly, my book has been very well received so far. I’m especially glad that different readers that I speak to seem to have a different favourite story. This gives me great pleasure, especially as I’ve tried to tackle such a wide range of subjects. So I would love for you to give Big Man & Other Stories a try for yourself and if you’re an avid reader like me, I’m sure you will find something you like. Enjoy! Richard

Last year alone, 2.5 million electric shocks were reported - 350,000 of those ending in serious injury or worse! When being called out, it is incredible how many homes have dangerous wiring due to bad DiY or lack of regular maintenance. One of the more common problems are metallic light fittings and switches without earthing wires. In the old days, wood or Bakelite were the installation of the day and earthing conductors were not required. Like most things, light fittings have evolved; brass, polished or brushed chrome, all giving those finishing touches to well decorated homes.

Unfortunately, in some cases, the wiring that feeds these fittings, haven't evolved with them, creating potentially dangerous situations. Another problem is the old style re-wirable fuses being wired with the wrong wire. As the average household demands more, so the demand on the cabling becomes greater. The wrong fuse can make your home unsafe! An electrical safety inspection will give you a top to bottom report on your electrical installation. So a visit from a qualified, Part P registered electrician is highly recommended, to give you piece of mind!
