Keith and I went along to see ‘Fly Me’ by the Peacehaven Players early in July. It was a very funny production and we enjoyed it very much. Looking forward to the Pantomime at Christmas time which this year is Sleeping Beauty. See page 51. We also had a very enjoyable evening with Harlequin Studio’s who put on their yearly show, and would like to say well done to Janice and her team and the kids who worked very hard to bring us a great evening. We welcome a new member to our team. Claire is our very friendly accounts person who will be assisting you with your outstanding invoices and queries. She has a wealth of experience in customer services and is enjoying taking some time out from her busy family life to work with us. Back it up ....or lose it for good I have never met anyone who enjoys emptying the dishwasher. It Is a chore that cannot be postponed, otherwise we would quickly run out of crockery and cutlery. Another chore no-one enjoys is backing up the personal data on a computer. This job is easily postponed to another day. The consequences of failing to create regular copies of your important data can be catastrophic. All your photos - gone, all your letters - gone, all your spreadsheets - gone, all your music - gone. You could literally be left with nothing. As a rule of the thumb I suggest you work out how much data there is, and multiply by four. This is the minimum size of backup storage. The backup device to use will depend on the amount of personal data you have to secure. If small amount of data then a USB memory stick may suffice. If you have a large quantity then an hard disc may be the answer. With multiple computers a drive that connects to your router may be a better choice. You need to have at least three backups of you data because most people are unaware they have a corrupt document until they go to access it again. With a single backup you may have overwritten the healthy backup with a corrupt document!

Recognition for local Resident

NSPCC says thank you to its ‘Volunteer Heroes’ including Dawn from Peacehaven and calls for more local people to get involved Dawn Paul from Peacehaven is among a number of people being recognised as NSPCC Volunteer Heroes during Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) for her efforts to support the children’s charity. Mother of four, Dawn age 53 has been volunteering for the NSPCC since 2011 and is one of more than 10,000 people who regularly undertake a wide range of activities on behalf of the charity. Each November Dawn raises money for the NSPCC by staging the ‘Angels Walk’ in memory of her sister Karen who died of cancer. Participants in the event choose to either run or walk the 5km or 10km routes and take in the sights in and around Peacehaven including the seafront and South Downs. In addition to the Angels Walk, Dawn organises events including coffee mornings, car boot sales, and cake sales, and is in the process of setting up an official fundraising group in the Brighton area. NSPCC fundraising manager Tracey Bravo said; “Our volunteers really are heroes to us and more importantly to the children that we work to protect, and so we wanted to celebrate them and the fantastic things that they do to make our work with vulnerable children possible. Dawn’s support has been invaluable and we would like to appeal to other local people to become NSPCC volunteers.” Tracey continued; “Whether you can spare an hour a week, or just one day to help the NSPCC, we would love to hear from you. We have numerous volunteering opportunities ranging from helping at a collection in your local shopping centre, to taking part in event like the London Marathon, becoming one of our ChildLine Schools Service volunteers or even becoming a volunteer driver at one of our centres – however you can help, please do get in touch.” When asked what she gets out of her volunteering role for the NSPCC, Dawn commented; “An immense pride in myself that I CAN make a difference, plus I get to meet lots of lovely people with similar ideals and morals as me.” Full-time mum Dawn who is also carer for her 16 year old Autistic son added; “When I meet people I usually make it known that I volunteer for the NSPCC, highlighting the fact that children need our help to be the best they can be. Saunders is manager of the year

By Pitchside View AT the recent Ryman League annual awards’ dinner at Wembley, Peacehaven & Telscombe FC’s manager Shaun Saunders was named Ryman League South manager of the year.

Saunders’ who with coach Tony Coade has masterminded back to back league winning promotions in the last two seasons said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won this award. It recognises all the hard work that everyone at the club has put in. I can’t wait for the new season to begin and the tests and challenges that playing in the Ryman Premier League will no doubt bring.” With the new season due to start on August 9��, the club has added to its squad by signing James Fraser and Sami El Abd, both from Whitehawk. Saunders plans to add more signings to strengthen his squad from last season, the majority of which have re-signed for the new campaign. However the club maybe on the point of losing last season’s top scorer Charlie Walker who is having trials with Division 2 side Luton Town. On the supporters’ front, a mammoth Peacehaven & Telscombe FC flag has been ordered. The flag, which has been funded by donations from supporters is 15’ across and will have pride of place behind the goal for all home games and will also be seen at all away games too. Admission prices for the new season are: £10 Adults, £5 Over 65 and free for U18s. FA Cup and FA Trophy prices may vary. If you really want to get behind your local team, it’s worth

investing in a season ticket. Season tickets provide around a 50% discount for Ryman league fixtures and cost just £10 per month for adults or £5 per month over 65s payable on monthly direct debit. Owner Richard Lloyd (66) is set to retire after nearly 36 years in the same building. “I should have retired last year, but decided to put it off for a few years. However, my brother died a few months ago out of the blue and now I am seeing things in a different light. I will miss the shop but am looking forward to a new chapter in my life. Seahaven Lioness Club

After a couple of busy months of fundraising, which is still ongoing of course, the Lionesses have enjoyed being in a position to make donations to several local organisations. At the Club meeting on 13 May a cheque for £500.00 was presented to Richard Lintott of Brighton Lions Club for Leo House Children’s Hospice (www.leohouse.org.uk), Richard is a Trustee of Leo House, a charity set up by Brighton Lions to give care and support to children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions and their families, and the money was raised through the Barn Dance organised by the Lionesses earlier this year. On Wednesday May 21 a group of Lionesses visited Newhaven Ambulance Station to present a batch of teddies to the ambulance crews. These are carried on the ambulances and given to any sick or injured children the crews have to pick up and are much appreciated. On Sunday May 25 four Lionesses were welcomed by the Newhaven Lifeboat crew to their base on the quay at Newhaven, where a cheque for £300.00 was presented, this being the proceeds of a Lucky Receipt Draw at Sainsbury’s at the end of March. In the early months of the year Lionesses are to be found busily sowing seeds, potting on plug plants and taking cuttings ready for our plants sales in May. This year they took a plant stall for the first time to the Meridian Centre mini-market on 20 May, then to Broad Street, Seaford on the Saturday and, as there were still quite a few nice plants left, again on the 31��. The three stalls made a total of over £250.00, which was amazing. Thanks to all who supported, either by supplying plants or buying them. Seahaven Lioness Club is a registered charity (Charity No: 1066755) who give all money raised from public events to good causes. THERE IS SPACE AT THE TABLE FOR EVERYONE An exciting new project is launching in Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs called Space At The Table.

During the school holidays we will be providing free healthy food and fun activities for children and their families. We understand the extra pressure put on families to stretch the budget further during the holidays. We are running two sessions during the summer holidays, the 12�� and 26�� of August at Bramber Avenue Hall. Sign Up for a Pursuits 4U Taster Session Imagine being alone, unable to leave the house with nobody but your television for company. It’s a depressing thought but it’s also reality for many older people. Many people spend the final years of their life alone, with very few close friends or family, with social isolation and loneliness. Loneliness is something which affects us all but older people are particularly vulnerable. This can be for many reasons, including losing their circle of friends or their spouse, having family who are far away, or problems with mobility, which may mean they simply can’t get out as much as they would like to. Loneliness has been attributed to heart conditions, depression and Alzheimer’s disease. So what can be done to tackle social isolation among older people? Pursuits 4U have many meaningful and stimulating day opportunities that brings together people to make new friends, have a laugh and enjoy the great banter with other like minded people. Pursuits 4U knows that its regular friendship link provides a real solution to a complex problem.

Pursuits 4U has purposely been imaginative with varied day opportunities on offer because we acknowledge that people are unique with individual tastes and preferences. This promotes individuals to maintain their identity through their own personal pursuit starting from as low as £15 per day opportunity. All of our day opportunities, though different, promotes older people and person’s with dementia to feel better, so if you’re concerned about the welfare of an older person around you, do your best to invite them to a Pursuits 4U activity to help bring comfort and companionship in their life. Support for CTLA On Saturday 5th July, representatives from CTLA were delighted to welcome the Deputy Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Terry Goodman, to their stand at the Newhaven Lifeboat Fete on Huggetts Green. Cllr Goodman supports the Community Transport charity as the outside representative for Seaford Town Council. CTLA offers an accessible dial-a-ride service, travel club and minibus hire scheme for residents and charities in Seaford and the surrounding towns and villages. June is the end of the Lion’s year and so it is all change. Sunday 28�� June was our changeover meal. We had a wonderful lunch at Seaford Golf Club with the Lionesses, who also change their president. This year is a first for the two club as the Presidents are a husband and wife team. Lion Trevor Gomersall became the Lion’s President and his wife Brenda is the new Lioness President. It is our aim to work more closely together in our efforts to serve the local community better. We do not intend to amalgamate the clubs, just work together. The Brian Smith Achievement Award was set up 17 years ago in memory of a former Lion President of the Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions Club. It seeks to recognise young people between the ages of 6 and 16 who have won through "against the odds". Each year schools and youth organisations are asked for nominations for children who have shown exceptional bravery in combating a serious illness or disability or a young person who cares for a sick or disabled person or someone who has learned to play a musical instrument or participate in a sport in spite of difficulties. The criteria is "achievement over and above" what might have been expected. The Winner this year is LYDIA ARNOLD who is 9 years of age. The Lion President also presented two Runners up Awards to AMELIA BOUGH and ANNABELLE IZZARD. Seaford Donkey Derby Bank Holiday Monday25 August 2014. Programmes will be sold around the houses during August. Please give generously as this is one of our major fund raising events and without the funds we will not be able to serve the community. The day is one of enjoyment with all the fun of the fair, stalls and of course donkey races with a tote. Come and have fun. Events start at about mid day with the first race at 1.00 pm.
