The Automated Office... ... not for me, too many bad memories Back in January 2000 I had a temporary accounts job at the brand new UK headquarters of BOC in Guildford. The reason I mention it was it was one of the first energy saving, automated offices. Everyone who worked there had to carry round an electronic badge the size of mobile phone. This badge was personally coded to you. Every door frame had a sensor in it, once you passed the sensor it turned on the lights and boosted the heating in the room. To save energy there were no light switches and no windows. To obtain drinks, snacks, sweets or food you handed your badge to the cashier or pressed it against a panel on the vending machines - there was an automatic payroll deduction. As their first ever temp I had a paper pass. It was hell. When I tried to enter the building the revolving door went into reverse and threw me out. When security rescued me the humiliation continued. When my co-workers went to a meeting I had to stand in the corridor as the lights went out and the heating went off. I could not buy a drink or food. I could only go to the toilet when a security person overrode the system. All because I had a paper pass I was invisible to the building. After three days personnel apologised, thanked me for my patience in helping them identify the pass problem - then sacked me! Next month.....Is Windows 10 worth upgrading to? (Really!)

Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips (Aether Bios Clinic) By Lin Bridgeford PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME The term was introduced by Robinson in 1947, implies a group of signs and symptoms caused by piriformis muscle disorders, leading to irritation and compression of the anatomic structures passing under its belly, notably the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica that is not related to the spine or discs. There is no consensus regarding diagnosis, pathophysiology, investigation and management. Anatomy: There are 2 piriformis muscles located across the bottom, attaching at one end to the ball at the top of the hip bone (the greater trochanter of the femur) and at the other end to either side of the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine) where the utero-sacral ligament also attaches. Piriformis muscles pass over the sacro-iliac joints, having a strong relationship with sciatic nerve, which passes under or through piriformis muscle slightly differently in each individual, making some people more susceptible to related sciatic nerve irritation. Symptoms: Are mostly related to spasm of the muscle and irritation of the underlying sciatic nerve. Buttock tenderness in the muscle itself and deep seated gluteal pain, which can radiate to coccyx and back of the leg. Aggravated by prolonged sitting, hip flexion, abduction (taking the leg out to the side) and internal rotation. There may be different leg lengths, weak hip abductors and pain on resisted hip abduction in sitting position. Causes: Usually by a fall on the buttocks or direct trauma. Can also be from irritation of the sacro-iliac joint or a lump near the sciatic notch, lipoma (fat containing lump) in the muscle, chronic expanding hematoma across the gluteal muscles, fibrosis after a deep injection, one leg shorter than the other, pyomyositis (bacterial infection in skeletal muscle that can cause a pus-filled abscess), dystonia (neurological movement disorder causing contractions and spasms), possibly adverse effects of atorvastatin. The layer of fascia surrounding the abdominal cavity can provide a route for infection from pelvis to piriformis, involving it in urino-genital irritation. Piriformis syndrome after caesarean section spinal anaesthetic is attributed to the spinal procedure, though can be caused by prolonged upright sitting after delivery, compressing sciatic nerve at sacro-iliac joint, inflaming and irritating piriformis. Ballet dancers often need help with piriformis due to leg turn-out position. Diagnosis: Neurological examination and imaging results are usually normal and used to rule out other causes of sciatica; each leg can be lifted up when laying on the back; symptoms are not be relieved by lumbar facet joint injections as lumbar nerve origin sciatica would be. Flexion, adduction and internal rotation movements of the hip cause pain. Pain can be reproduce by deep palpation in piriformis; contracting piriformis with Pace's manoeuvre: seated patient abducts the legs; stretching piriformis with Freiberg's manoeuvre: forceful internal rotation of the extended thigh and Side-laying: patient laying painful side up, upper leg bent, then lifting and holding upper knee several inches off the table. Treatment: Focuses on stretching (hip flexion, adduction, and external rotation), hip muscle strengthening, physical therapies, deep soft tissue work, acupuncture dry-needling, pain medication and ultrasound guided nerve blocks and injections, including corticosteroid and botulinum toxin; surgical management should be a last resort and can include arthroscopic release of the muscle. Local History, Local Policing I cannot portray nearly two hundred years of Brighton policing in the few lines here. Therefore let me encourage you to visit the Old Police Cells Museum, where I or one of my colleagues (most of whom are retired police officers) will give you a fascinating tour. Mike Laslett
The Old Police Cells Museum is housed in the basement of Brighton Town Hall and offers visitors a unique insight into the history of policing in Sussex and is both educational and entertaining. The Town Hall was built on the site of Saint Bartholomew’s. This Priory was established in the first half of the 13�� Century as an offshoot of the great Cluniac Priory at Lewes. If you ask nicely the guide may show you the well that the monks used to water their vegetables. It is about thirty feet deep and is fed by a tributary of the Wellsbourne stream which runs from Patcham to the beach. Sadly, the Priory and most of the dwellings in The Lanes were burnt down during the French invasion of 1514. The museum was Brighton’s main police station from 1830 to 1967. You may learn about the murder of Chief Constable Henry Solomon in 1844 by a prisoner, the history of women’s policing and view the evidence which convicted The Grand Hotel Bomber. You may see some of the old cells with their graffiti from the Mods and Rockers era, the white helmets worn by Brighton Police in summer and much, much, more. Accompanied children are most welcome and will have the opportunity to dress up in police uniforms or be photographed behind bars! Due to the generosity of Alderman Caffyn, the museum also houses one of the largest collections of truncheons and tipstaves in the country. From April until October the museum is open on Tuesdays to Saturdays and the 10:30 am tour lasts about an hour. As space is limited it is necessary to book your place on the tour by telephoning the Town Hall reception 01273 291052. Seaford Hard of Hearing & Lip Reading Club Losing your hearing is not always the worst thing in the world – just ask Gill Houghton.
Lip Reading Not only does Gill now have Nell - her beautiful, black, hard-of-hearing dog - but she also makes a huge difference to others by teaching them to lip-read. Gill’s hearing began to deteriorate just after her second child was born and she was devastated as it became increasingly difficult to communicate with her children, family and friends. Never one to give up, Gill turned to a lip-reading class. Lip-reading opened Gill’s eyes - and ears!?! – helping her to follow conversations more easily and feel less isolated. Instantly realising the immense value of lipreading, Gill practised diligently; her newfound confidence then led her to train as a teacher herself.
If anyone can help break down the barriers that can be created by disability, it is definitely Gill Houghton. Lip Reading Classes are held on Tuesdays at 10am at the Baptist Church Belgrave Road, Seaford. We break for the summer on the 21 July 2015 resuming lessons on the 4 September 2015. We'd love to welcome you, please contact Jenny on 01273 585339 or text 07968 043944 The Hard of Hearing Club meets on the first Friday of the month at 2.15pm at St James Clubhouse in Blatchington Road, Seaford. Gill has done many jobs in her life – fitness instructor, doorwoman and close protection officer to name a few – but the joy she gets from helping others is beyond comparison.
