Welcome Page Welcome to the December 2018 edition of the Peacehaven Directory
Contents
Our front cover has been provided by Colette Langton of ‘Colette Langton Photography.’ Glad to see her dog is growing up nicely.
P7 Ocean Views
2018 has been a fantastic year for us business wise. We have provided space for advertising for over 120 businesses every month, we have provided often over 10 pages free to community events and articles and given a voice to over 70 local groups, clubs and churches every month. It is nice to be able to do this and we would like to thank our readers and advertisers, who without, this would not be possible. We also launched the Newhaven Magazine in October; there is a lot of good feedback coming in from residents, so now our family of magazines is growing as we move into 2019. There are a lot of things that go on in the background and people whom we rely on and really appreciate; such as Vicky who helps us to keep our accounts flowing, James and MA Distribution who deliver come rain, shine or snow and our printers Holbrooks who have been amazing, especially when it comes to proof checking and last but not least Colette Langton who brightens up every edition. Still lots more things to whet your appetite this month, so take a break and take a look and I will speak with you again in 2019. Anne Briffett - Editor January edition deadline is:13 December 2018 Call: 01273 586527 E:info@peacehavendirectory.co.uk www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk

ean Views From ZX to Raspberry Pi ... How the UK Software Industry was born Most people of a certain age will remember the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. These mighty beasts were connected to a TV and a cassette tape recorder. Programs came from three sources: programs on tape, listings in magazines or by writing your own. During the summer of 1982 I adapted an address book listing in BASIC to become a way of storing the contents of my music collection. I quickly discovered that my collection was too big to be stored within the limited memory store of the ZX. Further research showed me it was the inefficient way that BASIC worked that prevented me from cataloguing all the tracks. Either Assembler or Machine Code were the way forward, as they were low level languages they were far more efficient in their use of the available memory. After three abortive attempts and a pile of books I realised I did not have the aptitude and admitted defeat.

However these frustrating machines did breed an army of programmers who could squeeze amazing things out of this primitive technology. The UK software industry was born. For the next twenty years this country was a dominant force in the IT Industry, however, the creativity started to fade as modern PCs did not draw out the same skills. A solution needed to be found. The Raspberry Pi Foundation created a basic bare board computer that could help children and enthusiasts to learn to program. In January we will see how a charity could produce over 19 million machines in six years. Have a great Christmas, see you in 2019!.

Pitchside View
Festive football By Pitchside View THERE’S LOADS going on at The Sports Park in December with Peacehaven at home on December 8, 22ⁿ & 29. And this year’s local Boxing Day derby sees the club head to Newhaven for a traditional 11 am kick-off. Boxing Day games are always eagerly anticipated, especially when the opposition are Peacehaven’s nearest neighbour. December 22ⁿ is also the time when the league programme reaches the halfway point and this season has seen Peacehaven hovering around sixth place for most of the season. They will be looking to push on in their remaining games. The under 23 and under 18 teams are both around the half way point in their respective leagues while the reserves, who play in the Mid Sussex League Premier division are having a much improved season and they too are in midtable. Meanwhile the club’s other men’s team is Peacehaven & Telscombe third team and they play in the Mid Sussex League Division Three south and are knocking on the promotion door.
A season ticket means you can watch all Peacehaven’s home games for the remainder of the season and the ticket also covers all the club’s under 23 home games too. A half season ticket costs just £35 for an adult and £25 for over 65s and they are available from the clubhouse on match days. All supporters are invited to the club’s Christmas Party which takes place on December 22ⁿ from 6 pm until late and follows on from the home game against Lingfield. It’s free admission and there’s a disco. Peacehaven & Telscombe’s home games for this month are: December 8 - Crawley Down Gatwick. December 22ⁿ - Lingfield. December 29 – Eastbourne Town. Havens Curt Ford celebrating his winning goal against Lancing.
If you’re struggling to come up with a present for your loved one, you could always buy them a half season ticket to watch Peacehaven & Telscombe FC! You can hire the club’s clubhouse from £150 by calling Sue Norwood on 07946 107041. Find out more and keep in touch with Peacehaven & Telscombe FC at www.peacehavenfc.co.uk on Twitter and Facebook.

Dare yourself to take on the Martlets Firewalk Dare yourself, feel empowered and join the Martlets Firewalk at dusk on Saturday 9 February at The Venue, Western Esplanade, Kingsway in Hove. Martlets is taking fundraising to a sizzling new level with a challenge that will inspire and give you a feel good high, whilst raising money to support local people. Clem Hunnisett from the Martlets’ Fundraising Team said, “This is one of those once in a lifetime opportunities to prove to yourself that you can overcome your fears and do absolutely anything when you set your mind to it!
“All funds raised will go towards helping Martlets to provide its life-changing care to local people who are living with terminal illness, allowing them hope, purpose and possibility. The Firewalk costs £20 to register and entrants need to raise a minimum of £100 for Martlets to take part. To find out more please contact: clem.hunnisett@martlets.org.uk or call: 01273 747455. Alternatively you can book online: www.themartlets.org.uk/Event/martlets-firewalk
“After an inspirational briefing, to get you in the zone, you’ll be walking barefoot over fiery hot coals at dusk. We’ll be with you every step of the way to cheer you on. “You can enter on your own, or perhaps get a brave group of friends or work colleagues to take part and enjoy the experience together. However you choose to take on this challenge, it will be an experience that will leave you buzzing and wanting to test yourself further.
Cycle Seahaven - a Family According to our Webpage, being a member of Cycle Seahaven (CSH) brings many benefits... Being a member can bring you discounts at local businesses including Mr Cycle, Positive Touch Therapy, Dave Peachey Physio, South East Mountain Bike Coaching, as well as many online retailers. However, there is one benefit that it we don't advertise on our Website I do heavily promote at Dr Bike - and that is the support and friendship of the club. We have many members with health issues - whether this be physical, emotional or mental and the support that they have all had from the club is limitless. I spoke to Jo Barlow who suffers with Lupus and Fribromyalgia. She states that she wakes every morning in pain, tired and not wanting to get out of bed but with the help of CSH, she has had a new lease of life. Cycling enables her to exercise at her own pace as there are so many rides to choose from and she can do as part of a group or alone. More importantly, when riding with Cycle Seahaven, it makes her feel safe, normal and still alive especially with some of the amazing places we get to see on our bikes. I've also had a tough year. I am fortunate that I have amazing parents who are extremely supportive but it got to a stage that I didn't want to worry or burden them when they had more than enough to deal with, so I put out a very cryptic cry for help which was picked up by a CSH, who then proceeded to pick me up! Then 1 or 2 club other members noticed a change in me and offered support and tried to find ways to help, including see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or
the use of the club e-bike. Things did not improve and it got to the stage that I was signed off work with depression and anxiety. I had always been 'ashamed' to admit I was suffering from Mental Health issues and thought that people would think even less of me and ridicule me, but no one has. The people that have been there for me on top of my family, are the CSH members - all of them. Every single person has offered support, hope and unconditional friendship. Gradually they have got me back out on the occassional ride by coming round to get me out, dealt with my panic attacks on rides and ensured there's someone to get me home, especially on the evening and pub rides. If they are not getting me out on a ride, they are contacting me and getting me out socially to ensure I don't shut myself way. I know that Jo and I are not the only ones that CSH has helped the more I have spoken out, the more I am hearing how CSH has helped people in one way or another, both physically and mentally, and I think it is something we should be really proud of. I for one, am really grateful to each and everyone of you and Thank you for being there for me and urge anyone suffering in any way to speak out – we are there for you. They say you can't choose your family, but they're wrong - you can choose CSH. Membership is just £7 per year (by Standing Order) or £13 for families and makes a great Christmas present! Community Voice At the recent Climate Change Conference held in Bangkok Thailand the scientists said we must reduce CO2 emissions otherwise the world will overheat. They put forward various suggestion: Plant more forest, strange when at present some Far Eastern countries are destroying theirs, renewable energies and machines to take CO2 out of the atmosphere. I assume the delegates got to Bangkok by air. How much CO2 did that produce. A case of “ Don’t do as I do, do as I tell you”. What they did not say was, because perhaps they were frightened to do so, was that humans are the producers the CO2. Therefore their “modus operandi“ must be the main factor in reducing it. (Population x Consumption = Global Warming). So what is the solution? The solution is, as I see it, two fold. First is to reduce consumption, meaning we go back to 1960s way of life, it was basic. For todays generation to understand. A few samples: Corner Shops, no supermarkets packed with every conceivable item of food flown in from around the world, milkmen delivered milk in reusable glass bottles, everything in paper bags or even old newspaper, no plastic, no automatic washing machines, tumble dryers or dishwashers. Only black and white small screen TVs. Just wireless. Your phone was in the red box on the corner, few cars, so travel by bus and train, paid for everything in cash. no credit cards, no computers or
see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or
the rest of the electronic equipment available today. Holidays at Butlins not Bali. The list can go on. The question here is, will today's younger generation accept it, as today’s older generation did then. I doubt it. The second is to reduce the world population which at May 2018 was 7.6 billion and growing at 1.18%. This growth is mainly in Asia and Africa according to information available. The population is growing mainly because medical advances have increased life expectancy and births are rising as the population increases. So how do you stabilize population growth. A taboo subject. Voluntary Euthanasia or birth control? The former is inconceivable. The latter is possible with agreement from all the countries of the world and with proper controls. Which, in reality, I feel is improbable because every country will have its own agenda making consensus impossible. Look at Brexit. So what is going to happen, Does anyone have any other ideas or do we just accept the status quo, and carry on as normal until Armageddon. As Hamlet said “ That is the question “ At my age its no problem but I do worry for future generations. John Armstrong.

Good News for ABC Fund The ABC fund run by local resident Anne Bickmore was presented at the end of November with a cheque for £11,000 from the Co-op Community Fund for Peacehaven. Similar amounts were also presented to the CATS Club and Friends of Downland Court. Anne said that this was a phenomenal amount and makes a huge difference to the charity.

The healing power of nature Martlets has begun a unique project to support bereaved men as they tend to a community allotment. Funded by Hospice UK, Earthworks is a weekly space for “Less than a quarter of those using our hospice bereavement the men to get together to grow and harvest an services are men and there’s nowhere else in Brighton & abundance of vegetables, flowers and fruit. Hove for bereaved men to get together. So, it makes sense to find an alternative way to support those men, since we Led by a hospice counsellor and a volunteer gardener; know we can help them.” it’s a welcoming and supportive environment in which to work, whilst enjoying getting outside in the fresh air. To find out more about Earthworks, or to sign-up please contact the Martlets’ Patient and Family Support AdminJane Cato from the hospice’s Bereavement Team said, istrator on 01273 273400, or email “It’s all very relaxed; each morning begins with a cuppa bereavement@martlets.org.uk. in the allotment shed around the wood burner. www.themartlets.org.uk “Previous gardening experience isn’t important; you can take on whichever jobs interest you, whether that’s lighter work in the greenhouse or getting really stuck into the digging and clearing. Simply getting closer to nature can be very therapeutic, regardless of what the weather’s doing! “It’s a very hands-on way for people to come together and to use their skills and energy to complete practical tasks, whilst gaining the benefit of talking to others who are in a similar situation – if that’s what they want to do.

Article - Dietless Living
Smash Your Food Cravings We blame our will power (or our perceived lack of it) for failing to achieve our weight goals. We now know that our cravings are caused by nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances or emotional issues and in most cases a mixture of these issues. Understanding the reasons for our cravings is the first step towards overcoming them. Different people experience different types of food cravings with varying intensities. This is why we cannot take a single minded approach. Each case has to be tackled individually. Often the cravings are for foods high in sugar and fats, which can make maintaining a healthy diet difficult. An imbalance of hormones, such as leptin and serotonin, can often cause food cravings. It is also possible that food cravings are due to endorphins that are released into the body after a meal, which mirrors addiction. Emotions may also be involved in producing a particular food craving, such as sadness, boredom or loneliness etc. There is also a possibility of a connection between the cravings and nutrients. This is the idea that the body craves certain foods because it lacks certain nutrients. Cravings can be selective or non-selective. Selective cravings are cravings for specific foods, which may be a person's favourite chocolate bar, a specific burger from their favourite restaurant, or a bag of crisps.
Non-selective cravings are the desire to eat anything. It may be the result of real hunger and hunger pains, but it can also be a sign of thirst and very often a need to simply numb emotions. Working with me you will learn how to listen to your body, identify and cope with your cravings and build a better relationship with food! Studies have shown that overcoming and controlling your cravings is easier to deal with when you are in a group rather then battling it alone. I organise group sessions via Zoom, an online video calling platform, so you can join from the comfort of your own home. If you think you are better suited to having 1-to-1 sessions you can call me or visit my website for more information. My next group programme called: Build Healthy Eating Habits starts on the 17th of January and lasts for 6 weeks. This programme doesn’t require dieting or will power. We will work in a small group, with a maximum of 8 people. If you are interested call me on 07960 561 874 for more information or to book your place. Investment: Early bird price £135, Full price £165 www.dietlessliving.co.uk marijana@dietlessliving.co.uk

A True History - By Stanley Bernard, local resident and Historian Over the years a number of books have been written about Peacehaven and Telscombe, mainly by Bob Poplett and Tony Payne. In fact I assisted Tony with a couple of his books. A couple of years ago as a break from researching my family tree I decided to have a go at the tree of Charles Neville. According to the published material I should have found him and his family in County Durham, when this drew a blank I realised that a lot of the history written about the two towns was not wholly true. After publishing some findings, another local historian Douglas d’Enno quite rightly, questioned the information I had put forward. Having shown him my sources, he had to amend some of the information he had included in his latest Saltdean book, such as Charles Neville was a Londoner. In “A true history of the two nearly new towns of Peacehaven and Telscombe”, is for the first time a complete history of how Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs came into being. I have not forgotten the village of Telscombe but that of course is much much older. Unfortunately even though the book stretches 154 pages, to keep the cost down to £15.99 only 85 pictures could be included. As the title suggests it is a true history but to make it as such a very detailed account of Charles Neville’s family is included even though there are still two or three unanswered questions. It is not known if his marriage to Dorothy was bigamous, why did he never mention his first son who was lost during the First World War? Include also is a short resume of Ambrose Harman, who you may ask, did you not mean Ambrose Gorham. No, there is an outline of the families of both men. Ambrose Harman because of his founding with others of Telscombe cliffs and of course Ambrose Gorham for what he did for the village of Telscombe. One trouble with writing history, is that if the information found contradicts published logos it could well be too expensive to change the logo. It was probably for this reason that in the 1980s Malcolm Troak in an article in the Peacehaven and Telscombe football club programme showed that the club was founded in 1922 and not 1923 as per their logo. My research not only found Malcolm’s source but further evidence that he was correct. This was shown to the football club, but I must agree with their committees decision it was not worth the costs of rebranding just for one year!
This was somewhere near an aerodrome which had been used during the First World War. My trawling through old newspapers and other documents held at The Keep, it has been possible to find more accurate locations for these. While on the subject of the School, the Rev. Povey charity fund is a link with the first ever school in the village. Far from being boring places, Peacehaven and Telscombe have something like a thousand years of history most of which can be traced. Luckily for the reader only an outline of some of the very early history has been included. So you can jump the first part and dive into the crimes of the past or look at the scandal surrounding Peacehaven’s founder Charles Neville. Historical information continually appears and a line had to be drawn at some point. After the book was published I was shown an article which actually had the date when the old well in Telscombe was finally decommissioned after running water had been brought to the village. Although not used for a few years, the old well in Telscombe was close in April 1924 along with a newer well which the South Coast Land and Resort Company has been using. If after reading this you wish to buy the book, A true history of the two nearly new towns of Peacehaven and Telscombe, published by Country Books at £15.99, it is available from:Greetings in the Meridian centre, Goodfayre in the Central Avenue (the Post Office) or online from Amazon.
In another section of the book it is shown that today’s Telscombe Cliffs Community Primary School, is roughly on the same site where in 1920-1 a training centre had been set up for ex-servicemen.
