Welcome Page Welcome to the February 2019 edition. Our front cover has been provided by Colette Langton of ‘Colette Langton Photography. February is upon us which means only a few weeks until Spring! Nights are already getting lighter and our weather has been quite tame for the time of year. I have been perusing Peacehaven Gossip on Facebook recently as we had our Motorbike stolen just before Christmas. It was recovered thanks to the social pages but due to damage it was written off. It was a shame as it was the first time I had ever felt the need to strap everything down. A lot of other motorbikes went missing but it seems the culprits were finally caught thanks to the various social media groups. So please be vigilant and protect your property. On a lighter note Wrestling Mania is coming to Peacehaven again, see the Peacehaven Town Council page for further information. Still a large amount of articles and events for you to look at this month. I am never short of that information these days which is lovely. A little thought to leave you with; there is still a lot of uncertainty at this time but all we can do is look out for and support each other and flourish and prosper the best we can and celebrate the diversity that we now have in our town. I deal with a lot of people in this line of work, some make me laugh, others make me frown, but equally they have to deal with me…

ean Views Don't blame the Internet ... for the death of the High Street Everyone blames the Internet for the demise of local shops but it was inevitable. In 1985 I attended a lecture on the death of the High Street, what I heard that day is coming to pass - just 20 years late... Since the 1970s independent shops have been driven out by the arrival of chain stores into smaller towns and secondary shopping centres. As the national chains expanded, every town had the same shops. The bigger supermarkets gradually outgrew the High Street and headed out of town. These new bigger stores offered more choice, lower prices, longer opening hours and ample free parking. The writing was on the wall. The success of the new supermarkets lead to the rise of the out of town retail parks. Independent businesses rarely migrated because the units were too big and too expensive. Many larger towns, like Eastbourne, have ended up with four or more out of town retail parks crammed into any suitable piece of land.

By Bruce Cameron-Stuart

Chain stores moved out of town or shut down. Leaving a few chain stores that did not fit out of town, particularly Department Stores, being left behind. These once proud businesses find themselves encircled with shops peddling bets, designer coffee, mobile phones, cheap clothes, budget sportswear and kebabs. So who will be the survivors? I reckon in ten years the last men standing will be Aldi, Asda, Argos, B&Q, Co-op, Currys, Dunelm, John Lewis, Lidl, Morrisons, Next, Pets at Home, RicherSounds, Sainsbury, Tesco and Waitrose. In most sectors, one will dominate, the rest will slide into history. Shops adapt, otherwise we would still be shopping at corner shops......

Pitchside View

Peacehaven FC first annual dinner By Pitchside View FOOTBALL CLUB supporter and local historian Stanley Bernard has unearthed this brilliant picture taken at the first ever Peacehaven FC annual dinner. The occasion was on Friday May 30 1924 and the dinner took place in the now long gone dining room of Hotel Peacehaven. The picture and story was published in the Downland Post on July 1 1924. The story also mentions some of the club’s committee members, one being Felix Powell who co-wrote the iconic World War One song with his brother, ‘Pack Up Your Troubles In An Old Kit Bag’. During the evening, thanks was also given to Peacehaven’s founding father, Charles Neville, who it says ‘loaned his char-a-banc to the club’ so they could get to away games.

Stanley Bernard is the author of ‘A true History of Towns Nearly New Towns Peacehaven & Telscombe, published by Country Books – ISBN 978-1910489-62-8. The book costs £15.99 from Amazon plus postage or direct from Stanley Bernard via the club.

Picture below: Football Club first annual dinner May 1924, Downland Post

There’s only one Peacehaven & Telscombe’s home game this month, and it is I on Saturday February 9 against Chichester City. The kick-off is 3pm.

You can hire the club’s clubhouse from £150 by calling Sue Norwood on 07946 107041. Find out more and keep in touch with Peacehaven & Telscombe FC at www.peacehavenfc.co.uk on Twitter and Facebook.

Article 47

J WAGSTAFF RECOGNITION AND CELEBRATION Wagstaff Family Funeral Directors described their day last Friday 18 January as fantastic when James Nesbit came to present Alistair Wagstaff, with the last ever print edition of the yellow pages. J Wagstaff and Company an independent family company, established over 100 years ago, was featured in the very first edition of the Yellow Pages, when printed in Brighton back in 1966. To celebrate the 53 year history of the telephone directory, James Nesbit, the star of Cold Feet who played a large part of the advertising campaign with the Yellow Pages, came to Brighton where it all began, to mark the occasion. Alistair was just two years old when the first edition was printed and to celebrate, as their longest serving customer of the directory, James Nesbit came to J Wagstaff’s Funeral office in Peacehaven to present Alistair Wagstaff with a copy of the very last paper edition of the iconic Yellow Pages. Peacehaven & District Residents Association

We are a totally independent association that can trace its origins to the start of Peacehaven in 1917. Throughout that time the Association has looked after the interests of the residents of Peacehaven. The inclusion of “District” in our title also enables us to comment on activities in the surrounding areas, including Telscombe and Newhaven, where they affect our Town. From our earliest days, the Association has worked to persuade the Town (formerly parish) Council, to act responsibly and openly. Our members are keen that we question inappropriate development, the lack of local amenities, and the building of too many new houses without the necessary infrastructure. We accept that Peacehaven will continue to expand, because it has space and is a good place to live. However we are determined to argue for the corresponding improvement to schooling, medical services, policing, public transport, roads within the town and the A259; not as an afterthought but as an integral part of that expansion. Contact is also maintained with other local groups and initiatives that have similar objectives. With a committed membership and no political links, our members know that we are free to raise questions with Town, District and County Councillors. At our quarterly meetings, our members can ask the committee to look into problems that they have with the provision of services to the Town and the development that is taking place. In accordance with the principle of total political independence, we do not apply for nor do we receive grants. All our funds come from our members’ subscriptions, coffee mornings and other events. These funds are then used to print our quarterly newsletter ”The Clairon”, maintain our website, hire rooms for the quarterly ‘open’ meetings and monthly committee meetings, together with all the incidental expenses of running any small organisation.

Membership - The Annual Subscription Is only £3.00 per household (due by 31 March Each year) Name: ……………………………………………………….….……………… Address: …………………………………………………………………………………………… …......................................................................................................................................................................................................... The 8 annual Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail 2019 It might only be February, but now is the time to consider your gardening plans for the summer. 2019 sees the 8 annual Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail take place along the coast between Brighton and Seaford. We already have one signed up in Peacehaven and 4 in Saltdean/Ovingdean.

There are currently 10 gardens scheduled to open, 4 of them totally brand new for 2019, all now listed on the web site, www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk

Last summer, over 20 private garden owners took the leap of faith and opened their gates to visitors. The net result of their efforts meant that trail organiser, Geoff Stonebanks, was able to hand over £12500 to Macmillan Cancer Support last autumn. All this money went directly to the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton, which celebrated its 2ⁿ birthday last November. Figures published by Macmillan showed a 26% increase on numbers of cancer sufferers supported by the centre in its second year. This support covered a wide range of subjects, complementary therapies, counselling and psychological therapies, helping with welfare benefits to name just a few. Just think how you could help support this amazing charity by agreeing to open your garden in 2019. You don’t need an immaculate or pristine plot. You just need to be an enthusiastic gardener, happy to talk about your garden to visitors and if you fancy serving tea and cakes that’s a real bonus. This years’ trail takes place on the weekend of the 27 and 28 July between the hours of 11am and 5pm on both days. The trail’s patron, TV Gardener, Christine Walkden will be in Sussex to officially open the event at 11am on the 27. She will visit Geoff’s garden, Driftwood and cut the ribbon!

Would you like to open your garden for Macmillan cancer Support in 2019? If so, please contact Geoff at geoffstonebanks@gmail.com or call him on 01323 899296 to discuss.

Article (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips

FASCIAL NETWORK Fascia has become a very popular topic recently, its true importance as a structural network having been largely ignored in the past. It consists mostly of collagen and elastin, forming a sheet of fibrous connective tissue that supports and separates structures throughout the entire body. If you have ever worn a twisted stocking or sock, you know the feeling of how annoying this can be; you get used to it and ignore it, though it is still a relief when you remove the sock or stocking at the end of the day! This is how it feels when fascia is tight of twisted, it can pull constantly, even though we learn to ignore it.

Fascia is a magical substance that seems to hold the memory of everything that has ever happened to us; accidents, injuries, surgeries, scars, postural habits, emotional impacts, etc.. The fascial network may well be largely responsible for the saying that “the issue is in the tissue” and why people can at times sense emotions when old ‘memories’ are released from the tissue. This ‘intelligent’ structure is fascinating in its power to heal old injuries and patterns in the body.

The late Biochemist, Candace Pert PhD wrote about the how the same neuro-transmitters that are responsible for laying down memories/emotions in the If you examine a piece of raw chicken, you will find a brain are also found in organs; this is a slightly differvery thin layer of transparent tissue close to the meat ent subject, though explains the power or releasing the fascia around organs, which is part of Visceral Osand beneath the skin. Ligaments, which attach bone to bone and tendons We are happy to advise you on your health matters. which attach muscle to bone are very fascia-like. Sometimes the key is in the anatomical name: tensor fascia lata, the long muscle at the outside of the thigh (the ilio-tibial band); planta fascia, the fascia under the foot (as in plantar fasciitis when it is inflamed); thoracolumbar fascia in the lower back, deep cervical fascia that surround all the structures in the neck, etc. Basically, the fascial network can resemble a building; running head to toe with the muscle structure, with supports across the body at the pelvic floor, respiratory diaphragm, thoracic inlet (between the neck and the body), the base of the skull and underneath the pituitary gland in the centre of the skull. Kneeling on all fours, the organs are suspended from the spine and as such tension in the fascia around the organs can pull on the spine and joints, causing pain and/or restricted movement, even though the organ itself it perfectly healthy.
