Welcome Page HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome to the 2019 edition. Our front cover has been provided by Colette Langton of ‘Colette Langton Photography, who told me ‘this was an old image my dad found in the attic, of Telscombe. The print was passed down from my Grandad. We think it was taken in the late 1940’s early 50’s but could be proven wrong by the experts! A touch of nostalgia!’ Eau De Brexit I’m putting pen to paper To voice my current fears; Which way to go is safer As Brexit day looms near. Are we in or are we out? Have we got a deal? I wish I knew what it’s about I can’t believe it’s real! Politicians change their views And go from ‘Yeah’ to Nay’, They only want to make the news And be the saviours of the day. They squabble and fight all day long, They haven’t got a clue, They’re always right and never wrong; Euro sceptics through and through. Some say the money in my purse Will not be worth as much, Is this most definitely true Or politicians Double Dutch? What will happen to our trade, all those goods going to and fro? Especially those that we have made If we don’t sell we’ll have no dough! Will our borders be protected And our fishermen more rights? Will our wishes be respected or are these just more ‘Sound Bytes’

Will foreign travel increase in price and passport control take ages? Will all this happen overnight Or will it be in stages? Our food will change, I’m pretty sure. We’ll say goodbye to foreign fare. Croissants and Coq Au Vin no more Will ’Haute Cuisine’ be found elsewhere? In will come traditional grub, Fish and Chips and mushy peas, Cornish pasties we’ll not snub, And tripe and onions~ oh yes please! We had a fight to get us in And now we want to go, we’ve got to take it on the chin Stiff upper lip you know! Are we in or are we out? Have we got a deal? I wish I knew what it’s about I can’t believe it’s real! By Joy Ashton - Local Resident

ean Views Raspberry Pi ... the new computer revolution A change in Government policy shifts the emphasis from computer science to using Office applications. Other than a cursory introduction to programming, it was removed from the ICT syllabus. Students were arriving on Computer Science courses with no experience of writing programs. At the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory they realised something needed to be done. The way forward was to design an ultra-cheap stripped down machine. No money was wasted, it was just a bare circuit board in a packet. To minimise costs the developers used SD Card for storage, an HDMi port for a TV (or monitor)and power would be supplied by a mobile phone charger. These were things an owner would probably already own. A cottage industry has grown up supplying starter kits containing a case, an OS, handbook and all the parts needed. Third parties developed operating systems, applications and add-on hardware.

By Bruce Cameron-Stuart

The pricing structure meant that the Pi was within reach of hard pressed schools, parents and hobbyists. The foundation has earned a healthy income from industry using the Pi as a cheap programmable circuit board rather than developing a specialist card from scratch. Additional funding has come from the Government and industry. Income has gone back into new models as well as creating teaching courses and materials for teachers. Today enthusiasts have made home security systems, home PCs, robots, camcorders and a myriad of other crazy projects. www.thepihut.com offers the basic Pi Zero W (ÂŁ10+p&p); Amazon has starter kits from ÂŁ20. Now everyone can afford a slice of Raspberry Pi.

Pitchside View

Housebuilder kicks-off clubhouse roof campaign BARRATT HOMES, the company behind the Chalker’s Rise development in Peacehaven, has kick-started a fundraising campaign for Peacehaven & Telscombe FC. By Pitchside View The two towns’ football club has already received a generous donation coupled with a further financial pledge from local housebuilder Barratt Homes to launch its campaign to raise £15,000 to repair its clubhouse roof. Barratt Southern Counties has donated an initial sum of £1,000 and has committed to a further £100 donation per each home sold at Chalker’s Rise for the first 50 homes. Sue Norwood, chair of Peacehaven & Telscombe FC said: “The current issues with the clubhouse roof are a major source of concern. The revenue generated by the clubhouse is the lifeblood of the football club.” “In recent years we have made temporary repairs but now a permanent solution is required.” Mrs Norwood continued: “We are extremely grateful to Barratt Homes for kick-starting our fundraising campaign, and for committing to providing additional funds.”

It is great that we have been able to kick-start fundraising efforts here, and we hope that the club will reach their target.” If you would like to contribute to the Peacehaven & Telscombe FC’s clubhouse roof appeal campaign, log onto: www.peacehavenfc.co.uk where you will find full details. Peacehaven & Telscombe’s home games for this month are: January 19, Horsham YMCA. January 26, Langney Wanderers. Both games kick-off at 3pm Picture left: Will Walsh Mike Bradbury Lynette St Quintin & Dan Palmer

Lynnette St-Quintin, Sales and Marketing Director for Barratt Southern Counties, comments: “Peacehaven & Telscombe Football Club is an important part of the local community, and we recognise the value in supporting local facilities wherever we can. You can hire the club’s clubhouse from £150 by calling Sue Norwood on 07946 107041. Find out more and keep in touch with Peacehaven & Telscombe FC at www.peacehavenfc.co.uk on Twitter and Facebook.

Cycle Seahaven As a child I can remember my first 'big bike'. They were all very much the same in those days and rarely had any gears. It had 2 wheels, brakes, pedals and that was about it. I recall being jealous of my friends who had 3 gears on their bike and longed for gears myself. Fast forward a few years and I remember my parents buying me a 10 speed racing bike. Wow! 10 gears - I'll be the envy of all my friends!! But by now 10 gears were being out-done by 11, 12 and anything up to 20 gears. I always thought, the more gears, the better the bike. Now, after being with CSH for 18 months, it's a different story and I see things have come full circle. When I started with the club, there were a few riders who rode 'single speed' (SS) bikes, and in the last year, the number has grown with many of our member building their own SS bikes. Riding without gears isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Some do it for fitness, others for ease of maintenance and a few are just plain bonkers. We are lucky to have a high number of Single Speed (SS) riders in Cycle Seahaven but let’s face it, we aren’t an average club. Even more impressive is the fact that all the club’s SS female riders are formidable in their own right and they never cease to impress. So what's the attraction? I asked one of our longest members, Rob ‘Scratch’ Allchin, and here's what he said - Single-Speed Mountain Biking; One Rider, One gear and No Idea. A single-speed bicycle, definition; a bicycle with a single cog front and back on the drivechain, no gears.

I was introduced to single-speed (SS) mountain biking when I returned to cycling nearly seven years ago. I had just bought a 27 geared mountain bike, which was a standard number of gears for the time and soon met up with local riders some of whom were riding bikes without gears. How would they climb the hills? Why would they want to struggle like that on hills I found hard with all of my gears? What was the point? These SS riders said things like “They make the riding experience a lot more rewarding” and “Once you have ridden one you’ll understand”. More mockingly, phrases like “Gears are for the weak” and “Derailleurs for failures” were banded about. They seemed a strange breed. After riding my geared mountain bike through its first winter, the mud and rain destroyed the bike’s gears, cogs, chain etc and these proved expensive to repair & replace. My SS friends suggested I get a SS bike for the following winter as they can be bought fairly cheaply and the cost of the replacement parts after a hard winter of riding are a lot less. So, the following Autumn I managed to buy a second-hand SS bike at a reasonable price with the intention of retiring my geared bike for the winter. I felt quite daunted going on my maiden SS ride with wellknown local SS advocate and Cycle Seahaven ride leader Andrew ‘Gus’ Lock. I was pleasantly surprised when I managed to keep up with him on our 30 mile off-road ride and even beat him up a couple of the climbs!

Taster Days for Volunteers Put something back into your local community by giving just a few hours of your spare time each week to Martlets. Volunteers are urgently needed to help at the hospice’s nine To find out more about volunteering for Martlets please contact peopleservices@martlets.org.uk or call 01273 718788. charity shops and its Hove Warehouse and Distribution Centre. www.themartlets.org.uk You’ll meet lots of new and interesting people, it’s great fun plus you’ll get a fantastic feeling from doing something worthwhile for the city and its people. Georgia Ellick from the hospice’s People Services Team said, “Everyone has a different reason for volunteering for Martlets, whether that’s a personal connection or they just want to help a local charity. We have people of all ages from all kinds of backgrounds; each bringing their individual experience, talents and enthusiasm. “What is common to everyone is that they want to do something good for their local community; to feel like they’ve made a difference to someone’s well-being. That’s something that you really sense with every hour of time that you donate to Martlets – it’s really important to us, our patients and their families. “We are a very warm and friendly team, so you’ll quickly feel like you’ve been here for years. Full training is given, and everyone is really supportive and will help you to find your feet in no time. If you feel this is something you might like to try, then why not sign-up for one of our Taster Days!” Twenty-six-year-old Rebecca Turner volunteers once a week at the Martlets Vintage shop in Church Street. She said, “It’s a varied role and I’ve learnt a lot that I know will help me in my career. I work on the till, sort the clothes and bric-a-brac, arrange displays and make plenty of tea and coffee! “Everyone has been so very friendly and it’s such a lovely place to work. I’d encourage any of my friends to volunteer here because it really is a delightful role and it’s such a dynamic cause to be a part of.” Val Persaud (79) has been volunteering for Martlets for more than twenty years. She’s worked in several of the hospice’s charity shops and has, for the last sixteen years, been helping behind the scenes in its warehouse with the important task of sorting up the clothes that have been donated. She said, “I open up the bags and sort through the clothes as we receive them, hanging them up and steaming them so that they look lovely and are ready for the shops. “I love volunteering, it’s something I’ve always done because it keeps me busy and active. I’m here three times a week and it takes me an hour to get here, on two different buses, so I must really enjoy it! “I’ve made lots of friends whilst volunteering and I feel like I’m really doing something useful for the community. I love it.”

Writing Group - FREE MEMBERSHIP! Even editors are human too, as I learned working at The Argus; so my New Year Resolution is to make our local ones happy by sending copy well before deadline dates to those lovely journals who graciously print our news for free e.g. Deans Magazine, Rottingdean Village News, Peacehaven Directory and Woodingdean Newsletter. CLIFFTOPS greatly appreciates their support. So you, dear reader, see this in January but I wrote it last November, long before our 2019 launch session: if anything untoward happens between now and then, forgive me for not having a crystal ball… Please join us. Pre-book by 15 Jan for our 4 February session. To book phone/text Peter Black on 07530 051 576 or email CWGSaltdean@outlook.com. Please bring your Libraries Extra card and some new work: if you want our February theme, it's Valentine's Day CLIFFTOPS' TALL TALES book. Saltdean Library are kindly displaying our work for all to read and, hopefully, enjoy. It's in an A4 red display book called TALL TALES FROM THE DEANS; so whenever you attend our sessions, please bring an extra copy of your work for the book. I entered Waterstones' charity fund-raising competition Write & Raise. The winner will be announced at a special event celebrating Write & Raise at Waterstones Brighton on Thursday 24 January 2019. Please join me for an unforgettable evening, by booking your place direct via email Events.Brighton@Waterstones.com or phone 01273 206017. Book early, limited places (there may be a small charge). B&H Libraries have a lot of helpful books and other writers' tools. Talking of B&H Libraries, CLIFFTOPS simply could not exist without the generosity of the Libraries Service; in particular, grateful thanks to Saltdean Library Officer Glenn Stevens, Administrator Norah Carr and Designer Supreme Gemma Miller. They all deserve medals. Diary dates. ● Mon 7 Jan. Launch of CLIFFTOPS, 4.45pm, Saltdean Library. ● Thur 24 Jan. Waterstones Write and Raise Evening – see above. ● Mon 4 Feb. CLIFFTOPS, 4.45pm, Saltdean Library. Happy New Year and I look forward to warmly welcoming you to CLIFFTOPS on the first Monday of each month. Article (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips BALANCING THE BODY WITH BREATHING (PRANAYAMA) Pranayama means ‘to stretch the breath’. It is prudent to advance gradually in any form of stretching that we do with the physical body. When stretching the physical body the ligaments act as elastic tissue and have a great capacity to stretch, provided the extent of flexibility is approached and accommodated gradually by the entire organism. At the same time, the muscle tissue needs to be strong enough to provide adequate support for the increased flexibility, maintaining a healthy balance. If ligaments are stretched too rapidly beyond their limit injury results, ranging from tearing of a few fibres to a complete ligamentous tear, requiring an extended recovery period. When stretching the breath, it seems logical that the same caution should be applied with the same aim of maintaining balance in the system as a whole. In the physical mechanics of breathing, we are moving many body tissues as we take air into the lungs. The lungs themselves, the pleural lining around the lungs and between the fissures, the fascial tissue between the lungs and all surrounding organs and structures – heart, oesophagus, diaphragm, ribs, sternum, spine – particularly the cervical spine from which the lungs are suspended. Not forgetting that all the nerves and blood vessels are housed in this elastic fascial tissue that surrounds just about every structure in the body. Also the structures affected by these adjacent structures, in particular all the abdominal organs that are affected by the diaphragm as it moves with the breath.

Imagine the effect of tension in the pleural tissue. Suppose that this tension pulls through to the diaphragm, affecting the breathing generally and the entire abdominal system via the restricted diaphragmatic movement. It may also pull through to the psoas muscle affecting the kidneys, which normally travel 600 metres along the psoas every day. The tension in the psoas muscle may pull unevenly on the hip and the lumbar spine affecting the nerve distribution to surrounding muscles and organs. The body considers organs and blood vessels to be more important than joints for survival, so it is happy for the person to have an adapted posture creating tension in a joint in order to make space to minimise or avoid any effective tension in an organ. Imagine now that the breath is suddenly stretched, releasing all the tension in the pleural tissue. The dynamics of the forces held throughout the body to help compensate for this tension are now no longer required. Suddenly, the accommodation and adaption around the stresses on the diaphragm, kidneys, lumbar spine, hip and perhaps reflex nerve responses all need to change, yet the change is far too great for the body to accommodate, resulting in imbalance. I feel the principal is similar to overstretching a ligament by excessive physical stretching, just that the physical stretching is this time accomplished with the breath.

Gentle breathing techniques allow the person to develop control over the breathing mechanism and the Injury patterns and restrictions in any of these structures rhythm of the breath; bonding with the lobes of the lungs and the breath whilst having a beneficial efcan become more apparent when the breath is fect on the body structures and circulation. The use of stretched further than accustomed. A restricted rib or cervical vertebra, e.g., may start to move more freely in physical postures with this breath further develops the strength of the breath. There is also a powerfully response to gently expanding the breath. Gradually, relaxing effect on the large Solar Plexus nerve centre, with careful expansion of the breath, deeper tensions our emotional brain, helping to keep it decongested. may start to release. When deep fascial tissue tensions in and between organs are released therapeutically, they can release deep tensions that may have been held in the body for a long period of time, without the person being consciously aware of them. This requires a deep adjustment within the whole system to regain an equilibrium that is ultimately beneficial though perhaps at first a little disorientating. I feel that a similar release can be gained with careful Pranayama. If the stretch of the breath and the tissues is gradual, the body can easily accommodate the micro changes whilst maintaining equilibrium. Church Life…

NEWS FROM ASCENSION CHURCH - BRAMBER AVENUE, PEACEHAVEN At the turn of the year we often think as individuals about what has been happening in the previous year and what we might hope for in the coming year. It is the same in the life of your parish church. Reflecting back on 2018 many things come to mind, although not in priority order… ● A chance to partner with the local community in many ways. Remembrance Sunday, school visits, supporting The House Project locally, and rough sleepers in Brighton and church meetings at The Coffee Haven etc. ● An ever increasing love and concern amongst the members of the church spanning every generation. ● A terrifically committed team who work every week on practical jobs around the grounds and buildings. ● A significant increase in the numbers attending the main church service on Sunday mornings. ● The launching of many new initiatives including healing services, prayer meetings, contemporary praise service, as well as the opportunity to meet in smaller groups in peoples homes around Peacehaven. ● The church is a social group as well as a spiritual group. Skittles night, cream teas, curry nights, lunches and breakfasts are enjoyed together regularly. ● In the spring we were able to welcome Rev Mark Hake to be our Associate Vicar to work alongside Rev Tim Mills Vicar of the Parish. ● No group can afford to ignore the great benefits that technology and good communication can bring. We are fortunate to have folks that enhance our services with multimedia and have developed a great church website at www.cofeatpeacehaven.org.uk. ● Every church needs gifts of time and finance. Although at times challenging we continue to find "where God guides he provides". A huge thanks to all those who have made all the above possible. ● Music in church enhances our worship. The visit of Chichester Cathedral Choir, Seaford Handbell Ringers, and Sim playing the organ and keyboard some Sundays has been great. For 2019 the PCC (Parochial Church Council) has produced a detailed overview of plans and priorities for the year ahead. Why not come and join us as we move forward in faith together in the parish of Peacehaven Rev Tim Mills 01273 588419 Rev Mark Hake 01273 589604 Debbie Skilton Church Warden 01273 588456 Jill Gray Church Warden 01273 584957

PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE BOWLS CLUB SUPPORTS GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND Peacehaven & Telscombe Bowls Club chose Guide Dogs for the Blind as its charity for 2018, a terrific amount of money was raised… During the course of the outdoor bowls season the club, its members and visiting teams raised the terrific sum of £710.00. This was supplemented by a generous donation of £290.00 from Phoenix Indoor Bowls Club making a grand total for the year of £1,000.00. The bowls club recently took second place in a nationwide competition run by Bowls England, the sport’s governing body. This prestigious competition is run annually to recognise those bowls clubs that are judged to have shown the greatest efforts to promote their club, increase membership and work with the local community. If you are interested in joining the club please contact the club secretary, Frank Leach, on 01273 584741 or email leachf@cldmail.co.uk. It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced player or new to the game, this friendly club with its excellent facilities will make you very welcome. Anyone interested in supporting the work of Guide Dogs locally with their fundraising events, covering the coastal communities of Kemp Town in the west to Seaford in the east should contact their local branch secretary, see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or

Elina Eiholce, on 07944 512860 or email infopcgd@gmail.com. Extra help is always needed at various times during the year; from helping with coffee mornings and mini markets at The Meridian Centre to manning the Guide Dogs stall at the various summer fairs in the local area. You will be made most welcome by all; including meeting some fabulous working guide dogs!
