Windows 8 - Coming Soon A radical look and feel to the venerable old-timerâ&#x20AC;Ś

Some of us hate change, others are attracted to the new S and fresh. Windows 8 is a definite "Marmite" product you will love it or loathe it. Deep under the surface it is based on Windows 7, able to run programs you already own. A preview version is available to download, free of charge, from Microsoft. The only ones who should consider trying it are enthusiasts who are comfortable backing up all their data and have the individual discs to reload from scratch. I have bitten the bullet and used my workshop PC to try Win8. It feels as though someone has converted my PC into a giant Smartphone. The initial desktop screen has been replaced by a Start Screen with Day-Glo coloured boxes. If you have a touch screen mobile phone I think you will find your way in half an hour. It can be navigated with a mouse but the door is opened to the touchscreen all-inone PCs and tablets. Internet Explorer 10 has the address bar at the bottom, when the page loads, all the toolbars fade away. Having only used it for a couple of hours I think I like it, but then I like new toys and gadgets. If you feel more at home with the familiar then go Windows 7 while you can. Garden Event for Charity This summer a blooming new open garden event is coming your way. Following his success in raising over £1500 for the new Cancer Support Centre in Brighton, through asking visitors to give generously if they had enjoyed looking at his garden during Artwave last year, Geoff Stonebanks approached Macmillan’s Sussex Fundraising Manager, Ben Ahmed, to see if they were interested in supporting him in organising a Coastal Garden Trail to raise much needed funds for the new centre in Brighton.

There will be a Grand Launch for the event at Paradise Park on Saturday 21�� July at 2pm and the event itself takes place between 12 and 6pm on the 5�� August. Entry will be £2 per garden or £7 to see all 8 gardens, tickets will be available on the 21�� July at Paradise Park or in Tourist information offices in Seaford, Peacehaven and Lewes from mid July. Ben’s reaction was very positive. “Macmillan in Sussex are so pleased to be working alongside Geoff, we are looking forward to the event raising vital funds for the Macmillan Sussex Cancer Support Centre. “ So the 1�� Macmillan Annual Coastal Garden Trail was born! Geoff has been working very hard over the winter moths and has secured 8 gardens, including his own, the award winning Driftwood in Bishopstone, to open up on Sunday 5�� August. The trail will run between Saltdean and Seaford! In order to make the whole thing blossom, Geoff needed to secure a sponsor for the event. After targeting several local businesses for support he was successful with Jonathan Tate, owner of Paradise Park, who agreed to come on board. Jonathan says “We are very proud of our Paradise Park community partnership schemes and when I met Geoff I immediately realised that we could So make a note in your diary to see the gardens on work together, to raise funds that will benefit local the 5�� August and help raise much needed funds people “ for the new centre.

1 What is your name and where do you live? My name is Debi Campbell and I live in Mayfield Avenue with my husband Gary, son Ethan, daughter Amelia and Sweets, the cat. 2 What do you like best about the part of Peacehaven you live in? I would bet that Mayfield Avenue is the windiest road in Peacehaven and I love the sound of the wind. We also have really nice neighbours and some handy takeaways around us so we are lucky. 3 What projects are you currently working on? I have recently set up Active Dementia Support. We need to have more one to one support to keep people with dementia stimulated and occupied. The Day Care options don’t appeal to everyone, so there needs to be more choice based on individual choices and preferences 4 Do you have any hobbies you would like to tell us about? I have recently started painting furniture. Up until now everything I have done has been for our home but as I have some spare time, and have been on a course, I'm keen to do some more professional stuff. We've also recently built some raised beds so that we can grow our own veg and it's going well so far. 5 What is your involvement in the Community? Dementia can be an isolating condition for the person and their carers/family. I hope that this project will re-connect people with their community and also engage me more with the local community through my work. 6 What is your favourite film? I have lots but my most favourite is “The Color Purple” a Stephen Spielberg film. 7 What was the last book you read? The last book I read was “Moab is my wash pot” by Stephen Fry. Once I had finished it, I left it on a bench on Hove seafront for someone else to find. 8 Any claim to fame. Depends on how you look at it! When I was 21, I appeared on Jim'll Fix it with Gary Glitter. It was cool for a long time but, for obvious reasons, not anymore. Also the writer RF Delderfield was my Granddad’s cousin.

Cooking made easy

Healthy Living - Taking Time to Cook My son who is a runner for Lewes Athletics and as such is very interested in healthy living at present has been cooking with me. I had the kids baking as soon as they could stand on a chair and crack eggs into a bowl so they are no stranger to the kitchen but the kind of cooking I was showing him was the kind where you reach for the jar of sauce so put over the pasta. Very handy you say and nothing wrong with that until you think of the alternative. His great passion is a curry and whilst watching ‘Indian Cooking Made Easy’ we got very inspired to create our own curry from scratch. We went searching for a recipe on the Internet and got creating. It actually worked our cheaper, because the spices and ingredients you buy last for a long time and become your stable cupboard essentials but you get to regulate what goes into your dish; no large amounts of oil or sugar etc. We chose a quite dry simple chicken curry dish that was so delicious. We also made our own Naan bread. It was easy to do and didn’t take very long and tasted delicious. I find the shop bought bread to be too big and very thick making it quite heavy and probably calorific, so keeping it thin and smaller was a healthier option and on the top we put garlic and coriander. We also made small ones for a party and served them with a dip. See the BBC good food website for the recipe.

A Moist family fruit cake 200g of self raising flour, 100g of butter/margarine, 100g sugar - caster/light brown 4oz of mixed dried fruit, 1 level teaspoon finely grated lemon rind, 1 standard egg 5 tablespoons of milk Heat Oven then cream the butter and sugar. Mix the egg and milk together ready to pour into the mixture. Put the dried fruit and lemon rind into a pan with a knob of butter and a splash of Water. (I pour lemon juice over it and add a Little sugar) and cook for a few minutes. Add the sugar into the bowl with any juices that have come out during cooking. Sift the flour into the bowl and add the milk and egg mixture. Combine with a metal spoon. Transfer to a 1lb loaf tin or a round cake tin and bake on gas mark 4/180/350F, check after 45 minutes, check again at 5 minute intervals.

Meet a Local Dog

Dog of the Month… This is Bramble, otherwise known as "Nut". She is a Springer Spaniel and owned by Kristian and Carys Hammond (age 11 & 8). Bramble lives with us at our house in Peacehaven. She is 4 years old. We got her in January 2011 from a Gamekeeper at Bord Hill Gardens in Mid-Sussex. She is quite a small dog and we believe she must have found being a working dog quite hard. She is very cute and very soppy, although she loves chasing birds and rabbits. Whilst she loves to run around at a mad pace when out on walks, at home she is quiet and calm and needs lots of cuddles and attention.

Local Residents Jubilee Tales Cllr Alan Sargent is in his second term as a councillor for Peacehaven Town Council. He was a Hydrographic Surveyor for 8 years in the Royal Navy achieving the rank of CPO. He spent 6 years mostly overseas in all sorts of places not on the tourist routes including the Arctic and Antarctic…

Where was I during the last Coronation Day 1953? I was onboard HMS Shackleton recently renamed at the time (was HMS Sharpshooter) a Hydrographic Survey Ship. The ship was charged with laying out marker buoys for the ships anchoring at Spithead for the fleet review. Having taken three days to complete the task we were then told that the ship, during the review, would accommodate a number of VIP guests who would board at Portsmouth Dockyard and the ship would then sail out and anchor with the ships being reviewed. The actual Coronation Day was deemed a day of rest which also meant splicing the main brace with a double ration of rum. The ships company were required to line the ship when Her Majesty sailed past and give three cheers and to raise their hats as they cheered. The Captain was not impressed with the previous day’s rehearsal and we were told over the tannoy in no uncertain manner that we were to cheer Hurrah and not Hurray. The day went well with the crew serving the guests strawberries and cream teas together with ice creams for the children. After the review we sailed back into Portsmouth and discharged our guests. After a very tiring day myself and a shipmate went ashore to the nearest local hostelry and drank large quantities of “Coronation Ale Special Brew”. Cllr Alan Sargent (ex CPO SR1) Peacehaven
