Welcome Welcome to the July edition of the Peacehaven Directory We have had some delivery problems in June and would like to apologise to those affected, the problems have been sorted. One problem that was not sorted however, was the theft of magazines and our distributor - James - trolley. Please remember that it may seem like a joke, but dumping them in the Sports Park meant that the groundsmen had to deal with them and now James is minus a trolley, this is his livelihood. That said there is information galore about events going on during the summer which need your support. We have fetes, summer shows, cinema films, gardens to visit and much more. S that announced Windows 8.1 When Windows 8 was introduced the end of Service Packs (substantial updates to their operating systems and programs). However, an update that can be downloaded from the "Apps" store will bring a large number of updates. The return of the Start button will please many. Microsoft is also addressing criticism that the layout did not accommodate those who used a keyboard and mouse. Tiles will be available in extra sizes, it is easier to move tiles and more colour schemes available. Update late 2013. Intel Haswell This refresh of the main processor range means a switch to Socket 1150 motherboards. This is a new processor rather than a refreshed one. The major upgrade is a big improvement in the onboard graphics. This new generation of motherboards have features that were commonplace on AMD FM1/FM2 motherboards for a while. The introductory processors are i5 and i7 and range from £150 to £275. Available now AMD Richland These are a refreshed range for the FM2 motherboards. Again there has been an improvement in processor and graphics performance. Although they lack the brute power of the new Intel Haswell one has to factor in the price: processors range between £60 and £115. Meridian Evening WI celebrations
The ladies of the Meridian Evening WI have been celebrating birthdays, life and their work in and around the community recently. Read on to find out what they have achieved, maybe you would like to join…
In April we celebrated our 30�� (Pearl) Anniversary, so naturally members put on their pearls and came along to enjoy the evening – even our birthday cake was decorated with pearls! After a sumptuous buffet provided by the members, we were entertained by Richard Ratcliffe with a full hour of songs and anecdotes of his life in the theatre. Our anniversary also coincided with our oldest member, Ellen’s 90�� Birthday. Ellen is still a very active member, has covered most positions on the committee, including President and is currently co-leader of our craft group. In the past she was also a regular visitor to the Peacehaven Town Forum. Our President, Carol and Treasurer, Jill presented Ellen with a bouquet of flowers. Our one remaining founder member, Jean was also presented with a plant.

We are a small, friendly group with 25 current members. We meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month (7.15-9.45 pm) in the Anzac Room, Meridian Centre and usually have a speaker at our monthly meetings. We also take part in other activities such as walks during the summer months, a skittles evening and, of course, lunches out. Our craft club meet twice a month in a room kindly provided by the Peacehaven Co-operative Store, where we learn different crafts and are currently taking part in a national project, to help build a giant model of the Perovskite crystal structure – a marriage of knitting, crochet and chemistry – designed to enthuse young people about both science and handicrafts. This year we have also adopted two flowerbeds at the Peacehaven Bowls Club, which we are planting with wildflower seeds and other plants to attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Following the National Federation of WIs putting pressure in the Government in 2009 to do something about the plight of the honeybee, we decided to do something in our local community to help this campaign. Our thanks again to the Peacehaven Co-operative Store, who have very kindly given us a donation towards this project. Some of our ladies have even taken up bowling! Macmillan Garden Trail
Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail The first ever Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail took place in August 2012. It was meticulously planned and organised by Geoff Stonebanks from Driftwood, whose award winning garden in Seaford, we mentioned last year. Then, nine intrepid garden owners opened up their gardens, some for the very first time! So successful was the event, raising over £2600 for the new cancer centre in Brighton, that Geoff has decided to hold it over 2 consecutive days this summer!

There are now an amazing 21 gardens opening from the outskirts of Brighton along the coast to Seaford and Eastbourne then up through Lewes to Chiddingly over the weekend of 3rd and 4th August. All gardens will open 11am to 5pm both days except one! It will be £2 to see each garden, £7 for a day pass or £10 to get a weekend pass, all available at the first garden you visit. Fabulous tea and cakes in some of the gardens along the way too. Six of the 21 have never opened their gates to visitors before.

Peacehaven & Telscombe F.C. Peacehaven & Telscombe F.C. have had a great season and are starting a third team all based in the Peacehaven area and are looking for sponsorship, can your business help? Having won the Edgar German Cup in 2011 under the management of Richard NELSON, then winning promotion to division 1, Peacehaven United FC followed this up in the 2011/12 season with a successive promotion, with our first ever winning of Division 1. After a successful 10 years as manager Richard passed over the reins to a long-standing player, Mark SHUTT, who is our current manager.

We continued in the Brighton League until Buildings & Property Maintenance deciding to play in the Mid-Sussex Football League at the commencement of the 1993/94 season. It was at Ÿ Decorating this time that the Club changed its name to the current Ÿ Brick & paving one.

Peacehaven United started in Division 4, gaining quick promotion to Division 3 and then 2. Having established ourselves in Division 2, the pinnacle of our Club’s history came at the end of the 1996/97 season, when we reached the final of the Sussex Junior Cup under the long-serving management of Tony Mills. There are still 2 players from the squad for that final that are currently playing for the club. We followed up this success the next season by putting together a run of 10 wins and a draw in our last 11 matches, securing promotion to Division 1. With several long-standing players together with another local club folding and their players coming to us, we had one brief season in 2007/08 of running 2 teams, with our second team winning Division 7. Royal Honours for Local Resident Anne Bickmore We are delighted to announce that Anne Bickmore of the ABC Charity has been honoured with a BEM in the Queen's birthday honours. She stated that “this award recognises all those businesses, charities, individuals and those working behind the scenes who have supported us over the years. They have made it possible for us to put a smile on the faces of many children.” “These children can be bereaved, abused, young carers or those suffering long term disability. The families may be single parents or in the poverty trap.
