Welcome to the July Edition of the Peacehaven Directory. We had a well earned break at the end of May, so if you are going away soon, have a good one and make sure you relax. On our front cover this month is Amelia, (age 12), with Barter, a horse at Hoddern Farm. As I am writing this the World Cup is in full swing and we are waiting to see if England can make it through the first stage, whilst looking forward to Wimbledon and our family favourite, The Tour de France. Mobile card payments ....useful tech or just hype? In this modern world people are accustomed to paying all their bills with a debit or credit card. Until recently the barriers to accept payments by card, in people's homes were too high for small businesses. Last year several companies started offering mobile payment systems using Chip and PIN readers. The use of these readers is significant as there was a reduced chance of fraud, leading to cheaper transaction costs. I have just started using PayPal Here to give greater flexibility and improve my cashflow. I bought the card reader on promotion for ÂŁ49.99. The only ongoing cost is a 2.75% transaction fee. To make the system work you need a modern iPhone or Android phone and a PayPal account. To accept payment the phone needs a data signal or a WiFi connection. Then start the PayPal Here app on the phone, link the reader to the phone via Bluetooth and enter the value of the transaction. After the system has synchronised with PayPal, the screen changes to invite the customer to touch the screen to confirm the amount. The card is inserted in the reader, the customer types in their PIN number and presses the green button. Within a few seconds the money is collected. A receipt can be instantly sent by email or text.

Her collagraphs have a bold and naive style that reflect nature and the animals that surround her cottage in the South Downs. We are delighted that Richard Walsh is with us again this year as his distinctive photography “with a twist” is always popular and a delight. Sandy Gray’s photographs give intimate glimpses of the world from her travels and our local beauty spots. In addition to fine art, we pride ourselves on the high quality of the craft we have on show each year. Our jewellers include: Liz Cottingham who has become known throughout East Sussex as the ‘spoon ring’ lady, a title that does not fully describe the range and beauty of her silver jewellery. Anne Pickering’s jewellery of silver and semiprecious stones delicately reflect her love of the sea. Penny O’Neil creates amazing necklaces and bracelets from retro buttons and beads, Heather Bigmore loves colour and this is stunningly shown in the wide range of her brightly coloured jewellery. Finally, we welcome Vanessa Minall who makes jewellery from the small inner workings of watches creating delicate, lacy wonders. Diane Costello’s handbags need no introduction. The ladies of Sussex flock to any event where her bags are on sale and we are delighted that she is with us again this year. Robin Shell has a new range of silk and fabric covered gifts including lampshades, wooden boxes and frames. We are also pleased to welcome Seaford’s very own soap maker Christine Lambert who has recently started the Little Seaford Soap Company. We also welcome Jaju Beans and Leaves, whose imported teas and coffee beans sold out at the Christmas Craft fair last year! Magpies’ new Chairman By Pitchside View AFTER more than 36 years in charge, Peacehaven & Telscombe FC chairman Jim Edwards is stepping down. In his place and only the third chairman the club has had in more than 50 years is Andrew Melbourne, 35.

To follow the Magpies next season you can buy a brilliant value season ticket at just £10 per month, or £100 if paid in one lump sum. Concessions are £50 and under 18s are free.

Andrew said: ‘’I’ve been helping to run the club for the last 3½ years and it’s a massive honour to be replacing Jim Edwards as chairman. I’d like to thank him on behalf of everyone at the club for all he has done over the years.’’

And if you’re involved with a business that would like to get involved with the club on a commercial basis, they would love to hear from you as running and maintaining a club like Peacehaven & Telscombe FC is a costly business and needs all the support it can generate.

Andrew believes that a town the size of Peacehaven should be home to a Ryman Premier League club. He said: ‘’We’ve reached the Ryman Premier League earlier than expected. Over 700 people came from Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs to watch us defeat Bognor Regis Town 3-0 in the County Cup final at the AMEX and one of my key goals is to retain as many of these fans as possible in order to build a regular fan base.’’

Going forward Andrew feels that Peacehaven is very much a community club and he wants to build on that ethos. This is being done through the CS Academy with first team coach Tony Coade at the helm. In order to meet Ryman Premier League requirements and beyond, the club needs to build a new stand. Fundraising Event in aid of Serbia Flood Victims Marianna Dragojevic - Local resident and owner of Anti Aging Therapies is planning a pamper afternoon to raise money for people affected in Serbia by flooding. Marianna told me that “about 500 000 people were affected by the floods. To get the better picture of how bad it is, the whole population is about 6 million. A lot of houses, roads do not exist any more. Bearing in mind that Serbia had a lot of problems before this happened it just makes life even harder there”. Are we the Oldest????? "A survivor from the past" In February 1947 a group of residents of Peacehaven & Telscombe, perhaps members of the church gathered together in the church hall in Bramber Avenue, (then a lane I am led to believe), and constituted the Peacehaven & Telscombe Good Companions Club for any retired person to join. Perhaps that is where the local pub got its' name. The Good Companions. Licensee could have been a member of the club and took the name with him. Throughout the years chairpersons and committees have been elected to ensure this club continues. The venue changed from the church hall to the main hall in the Meridian centre. The format also changed slightly with the closing hymn being dropped as it was no longer appropriate to our meetings. The club continues to thrive and meets every Monday from 2pm until approx 4 pm. It is open to any person male or female that is retired with no age limit. Membership is set at 100 persons. This was often the case and indeed for many years a waiting list operated. Sadly due to members passing away,leaving the area, entering care homes or becoming too disabled, membership now runs at approx 60 /70 members. The present elected Chairman now in his 6th year of office had been married a year before the club was formed in 1947, (a World War II veteran ,served as a crew member on a Liberator bomber) is aided by an elected committee of 12 members. His wife Sylvia is the elected treasurer. The central idea is still maintained, "A place where people can gather together to socialize, chat and of course have that ever faithful cup of tea and biscuit.

Games such as Bingo, Hoy, beetle drive, general knowledge quizzes etc still maintained. Entertaining artists are booked regularly to provide a live hour or so of songs many from a long forgotten time. or we thought we had forgotten until the words come tumbling back. Activities also include Ploughman's lunches, Christmas dinners, Autumn fayre etc etc. As in the beginning the club is self financed by a membership fee of £5 with a weekly entrance charge and raffle. The central meeting place makes it easier for members to reach using a variety of modes of transport such as walking, Lions Club carrier, CTLA transport, taxi and electric scooters. The club was awarded ‘The Organization of the year’ by the town Council in 2011/12, so we must be doing something right and keeping up the original idea of a club for the retired. If you who are reading this now are retired and would like to spend a couple hours each Monday meeting like personnel then the door is wide open. Why not come along as a visitor for 2 weeks you might like us, as our 65 members evidently do. The Peacehaven and Telscombe Good Companions Club welcomes you as it has done since 1947. Bowls Club Event

Peacehaven and Telscombe Bowls Club. Hot on the heels of our success in gaining an award of over £27,500 to extend our pavilion from the Lottery Fund through Sport England’s Olympic Heritage we were invited by the new Mayor of Peacehaven, Cllr Robbie Robertson, to host a visit by the Lady Boys of Bangkok. This was intended to be a combined publicity opportunity for the Bowls Club, the Lady Boys and announcing Robbie’s appointment. So on a sunny Wednesday afternoon on the 14th May we gathered at the Piddinghoe Avenue bowling green to welcome our visitors. We were dressed for the occasion but were put in the shade by our glamorous visitors, introduced by Mayor Robbie, proudly bearing his chain of office. What followed was a feast of entertainment expertly lead by Robbie himself. You have never seen bowling like it, nor ever will again. We are grateful that contrary to reports in the popular press (Argus and Leader) our visitors readily removed their 6 inch heels before venturing onto our beautifully manicured turf. Our Green Keeper Kevin Bray’s nightmare was avoided. Squeals of delight greeted each successful delivery till in the end the Boys were becoming quite proficient. The afternoon ended with a traditional Tea and Biscuits farewell. The Lottery award will enable the Bowls Club to host larger visiting teams and other events such as County Bowls Matches, to come in the future. In September we will be staging the Mixed Under 18s Sussex County Finals, a repeat of last year’s first ever holding of this event. If the day, Saturday the 20th September, is anything like last year it will be unmissable to all who have any interest in Youth Sport. What we saw was a feast of excellent bowling from the youngsters which was a real pleasure to witness. Put the date in your diaries and BE THERE! The Club will welcome you with open arms including a well stocked bar and excellent kitchen produce. During next winter we will build our planned extension which will then enable us to stage Short Mat bowls in our pavilion. This indoor sport is rapidly growing in popularity and will enable our Club to operate throughout the year, not just the summer months as at present. This in turn will ensure our financial viability for years to come. So why not come and join your successful Town Bowls Club? If you don’t try it you will never know what you have missed. All are welcome from 9 to 90 and we have the equipment to enable all to participate including two sets of junior Bowls generously donated recently by the House Project. PEACEHAVEN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SUMMER SHOW

We are holding the Summer Show on Saturday 2nd August at The Meridian Centre, Peacehaven. Time 10.30 - 2.00. Entrance is 50p or free with a schedule. Have you got green fingers, are you the next Mary Berry or David Bailey? If so would you like to enter our Annual Show. We have a variety of classes including cut flowers, flower displays, vegetables, baking, preserves, handicrafts & photography. Schedules complete with Entry Forms are available from The Information Office, Meridian Centre, Peacehaven. We also have our popular Children’s Competition with a variety of classes including designing next years show schedule cover, collage of leaves, animal made from vegetable, cup cakes & a decorated t shirt. Age ranges are: 4 - 7 years, 8 - 11 years & 12 - 15 years. There will also be a Tombola, plant sales, Raffle, Bric-a-brac & name the scarecrow and not forgetting to treat yourself to refreshments in the cafe. So come along and join us for a great day. Sponsored Bike Ride Success The Peacehaven Guides-Senior Section have successfully completed a sponsored bike ride from Saltdean to Worthing Pier and back. They rode 35 miles for sport relief / raise money for them to go to camp… They set off bright and early from Saltdean on a sunny Sunday morning heading west towards the halfway point, before stopping for lunch and turning round to come home. The weather threw everything at them, wind, rain, sunshine, even hail!! However, through sheer determination and excellent team spirit the girls completed the 35 mile bike ride, many of them having not been on a bike in a number of years! The girls aim was to divide their sponsor money between Sport Relief and a fund to get them to international Guide camp in 2015. The international camp is a fantastic experience for the girls. They are able to spend the week camping among 1000 other Guides from not only East Sussex but all around the world including Japan, America, African Nations and many other countries. The camp only happens once every four years but provides great opportunities for all who attend. Collectively the group raised a whopping £618.43!!! A huge congratulations is deserved to all who took part and a massive thank you to those who sponsored them. Peacehaven Senior Section meet on a Monday night and is for Guiding members aged 14-26 years old. We are always happy to welcome new girls to our unit.
