Tim Peake ... how not to treat a modern role model On 15th December 2015 Tim Peake was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan to begin his seven month stay at the International Space Station. On arrival the automated docking system failed. The vastly experienced Yuri Malenchenko (827 days in space by the end of the mission) quickly overrode the system to make a manual docking. After Christmas it became widely known that the two Tims (Peake and Kopra) where to embark on a space walk to replace a faulty sequential shunt unit. Soon after the main objective was achieved a fault developed with Kopra's space suit, promptly aborting the space walk. These major events were covered by the Sky At Night team under the Stargazing Live banner with Brian Cox, Dara O'Briain and Cmdr Chris Hatfield. Tim has also kept in the public eye presenting an award at The Brits. C4 devoted a 90 minute special Heston's Dinner in Space. Tim also ran a marathon in space (to coincide with London Marathon). Along with countless live link ups with schools. For his arrival back on earth the BBC would not fund the Sky At Night team to cover the return to earth on 18th June 2016. I can understand commercial channels not covering this but surely some contingency funding could be used. It annoys me that wall-to-wall coverage of the tragic events in Orlando and Paris is funded (with hardly anyone watching) and a positive role model is ignored with mere background on BBC News Channel. Utterly
disgraceful. Patrick Moore would never had let this happen......

On Saturday 17th September we will be ‘walking from Arundel to Brighton in aid of The Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity which supports babies and children with Cerebral Palsy. With two walk distances available of 35km(around 8-9 hours) or 12km (around 2-3 hours) you can choose what would be suitable for you and still enjoy the staggeringly beautiful views and scenery which Sussex has to offer. Starting from the spectacular Arundel Castle, the walk will span across the magnificent landscape of the South Downs before finishing at Devil’s Dyke on the outskirts of Brighton. Not only will this be a memorable occasion for everyone taking part, it also provides an ideal opportunity for you to do something fantastic with friends, colleagues and/or family. The event is open to everyone who likes walking or just fancies a challenge. We have teamed up with the wonderful people at Pied A Terre Adventure to organise this event, so you can be sure that you will be well looked after. There will be regular refreshment stops, plenty of encouragement along the way and a well-deserved hot meal for all on completion and certificate. Plus once again we will have an exclusive mystery prize draw for all those fundraisers who reach the £100 target. Brighton Male Voice Choir
A Brief History and Update
This year the BMVC celebrates its 90th Anniversary. We feel sure that the local community will be interested in a few snapshots from our past. Formed during the years following the depression of 1926 its members then were mainly recruited from the Welsh mining community who came to Brighton to work on the new Sea Defences between Black Rock and Rottingdean. Records are few but we know the choir was reformed after the war in 1947. The weekly rehearsals were held in Rosslyns Store. London Rd. Brighton (An old established Drapers now long gone) One of the original members who joined the choir at this time, Bill Verrier, is still singing with us. The choir was conducted then by Mr Bartlett and led them when they appeared live at “The Dome” on the BBC radio programme “Friday Night is Music Night.” In the late 1950’s. Many successful musical competitions followed. Mr Henry Garrett followed Mr Bartlett as musical director and rehearsals moved to Elm Grove Primary School. In turn, Brian Wiggins took on the mantle of MD to be followed in the Seventies by Mr Roger Martin who was succeeded by Dick Payne in 1991; now recently deceased. After a fairly long innings Dick handed over to Mrs Maggie Lee. As Musical Director she introduced more modern music as well as cementing the more traditional and classical male voice repertoire. Having established the choir’s particular style for several years, she retired from the role. She was replaced by Deryck Hanchett who had held the same position with the Welsh Brighton Male Voice Choir for a number of years. He remained with the BMVC for over three years but moved away from Brighton in 2013.
Once again, we were fortunate to have had Maggie Lee return to take charge as Musical Director. She retired as MD in late 2014. Some members of the choir have formed a ‘Mini Choir’ and they have a separate programme of concerts at mainly Rest Homes. In addition to the fundraising efforts of the main choir, they also raise funds for a whole list of local charities. Like all choirs we are looking for new members. Brighton Male Voice Choir will always welcome new singers. We rehearse each Wednesday at 7.30 pm at Woodingdean Methodist Church, The Ridgway Brighton BN2 6PA. We break for half time coffee and tea. Ability to read music is not essential and no auditions are held. We offer a hearty and warm welcome to those men who like to sing and help in our preparation of the year’s programme of fundraising concert engagements. We perform a variety of songs from the shows together with many other popular numbers as well as more classical arrangements, which reflect an international flavour. E.g. ‘Nessun Dorma.’ We are arranging a special concert with Peacehaven Council to take place in October this year. Our annual membership fees are very reasonable. New season, even more hope

IT MAY BE THE CLOSE season but the activity off the pitch at Piddinghoe Avenue has been intense.
The interim board has been hard at work raising the necessary funds to turn the club into a Community Football Club. At the time of writing the signs look promising that the club’s campaign to raise £35,000 to turn the football club into community ownership is set to succeed. The campaign officially closes on June 30. However the club still wants as many people as possible to get involved and if you fancy yourself as a part-owner of your local football club, you can get involved for as little as £100. You can get involved by simply clicking on the Community Share Offer button on the club’s home page – www.peacehavenfc.co.uk Alternatively you can download a prospectus by clicking ‘Information’ on the top bar of the home page. Then click ‘Documents’. Then click ‘Peacehaven & Telscombe FC Community Shares Offer’. Also available here are five more documents giving you all the information you should need. If you are still not sure and want further information call Mike Bradbury, interim board member and fundraising champion on: 07772 724204. Next season the club will be fielding a total of 19 teams each weekend. These comprise 16 youth teams, one under 18 team a reserve men’s team and a first team.
The new era which is dawning over Peacehaven & Telscombe FC is exciting and one that if you’re interested in football at a local, community level you should get involved with. If you’ve not been to the club recently, why not pop along to one of the club’s pre-season friendlies and see things for yourself. Macmillan Garden Trail The 5th annual Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail takes place over the weekend of the 9th and 10th July. This year there are an amazing 29 gardens on the trail from Hove in the west to East Dean in the east. Organiser, Geoff Stonebanks, tells us that Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs has 5 gardens. opening up for 2016. Entry to the gardens will be £2 for each garden visited or you can purchase a day ticket, on either the Saturday or Sunday for £7, to see as many as you can get to. As always, the money goes to Macmillan Cancer Support and in particular the new Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton. Full details of all the gardens opening on the trail can be found at www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk. Visitors will be able to pick up a brochure, listing all gardens, in the first one they visit over the weekend. Administrative counties were a level of subnational division of England used for the purposes of local government from 1889 to 1974. They were created by the Local Government Act 1888 as the areas for which county councils were elected. Some large counties were divided into several administrative counties, each with its own county council. The administrative counties were abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 and were replaced by the metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties of England. A shire county is a non-metropolitan county that has multiple districts. Its name does not need to have shire in it. The term shire county is however unofficial. There are 28 such counties and Sussex is one of them.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips (Aether Bios Clinic) BACK PAIN A common problem that affects most people at some time, mostly in the lower back (lumbago), though can be felt anywhere in the spine. May be triggered by strained muscles, tendons or ligaments, wear and tear, bad posture, poor bending and lifting technique as well as stress. It is the leading cause of long-term sickness in UK causing more the 15 million lost work days in 2013. Although painful, it is not serious in most cases. Symptoms: Pain, dull or sharp ache, tenderness, stiffness, weakness, numbness or tingling (can travel down the leg in sciatica and disc problems). Joint pain when walking or stiffness first thing in the morning lasting more than half an hour may be a sign of arthritis. Indication that serious problems may exist are swelling, constant pain not eased by laying down, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in genitals, buttock or back passage, sudden weight loss, pain in the chest, high fever or after an accident. Causes: More serious causes are disc problems, sciatica, whiplash, frozen shoulder, ankylosing spondylitis; rare causes fracture and cancer. Most cases related to minor sprains, strains, injuries or trapped, irritated nerves. Common causes developing over time are bad posture at work, driving, on the couch, bending, lifting or twisting awkwardly, overstretching and overuse, sleeping on a poor mattress. Risk factors are stress, smoking, pregnancy, overweight, long term corticosteroids. Diagnosis: Your doctor will ask you to describe the pain and where you feel it, when it started, what makes it better or worse and if it has happened in the past; also about lifestyle and work. Examination will assess range of movement in your back, ability to lift your legs, sit, stand and walk, testing knee-jerk and ankle reflexes. You may be referred for X-ray or MRI scan. Treatment: In short term back pain keep as active as possible, use hot and cold compression packs and over the counter painkillers. Immobility can weaken the back muscles and may hurt more in the long run. Staying relaxed and positive is important for recovery. Treatment for back pain lasting more than 6 weeks involves painkillers, exercise and manual therapy or acupuncture. In longer term back pain counselling, antidepressants or a pain clinic. Spinal surgery is only recommended when all else has failed or the pain is so severe that you cannot sleep or carry out daily activities. Prevention: Maintain good posture at work, home and play. Learn to lift, bend and twist safely. Exercise regularly without strain. Improve flexibility and strength, particularly in core muscles. Wear suitable shoes. Learn relaxation techniques if you are stressed. Maintain a healthy weight. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine spine and all surrounding tissues; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength and functionality and assess nerve pathways. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests and determine the root cause. Treat to improve strength, functionality and movement and reduce tension, inflammation, pain and swelling. Postural and ergonomic advice regarding lifting, carrying, bending, twisting, sleeping, footwear, sitting at desk, car, couch, as well as rehabilitation exercises. Treatment may include manipulation, deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, fascial techniques, dry needling, etc. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation.
