Things always wind down a little this time of the year with the magazine as people take long awaited holidays and enjoy a bit of down time. There are many events that are taking place this summer in and around the town so do try and support them. I am hearing more and more voices of discontent in Peacehaven recently as more housing is proposed and services are stretched to the limit. There is an interesting article on page 50 that I think will resonate with many. Whilst it is not a slight on the new people to the area who are very welcome; It does highlight a growing problem that does not seem to have a solution at present. I have also had a lot of complaints recently about the grass cutting of the verges; being left too long and then the cuttings left that spill onto the roads and pathways make them dangerous, especially to the older members of our community. That being said, I am starting a Community Concerns section in the magazine. I will not print anything rude or personal but if you have a particular concern send in a little piece about it and I will happily put them in the magazine or on Facebook depending on space. Don’t forget to support our local businesses and I hope you all continue to enjoy a bit of summer. ean Views Bye Bye to Maida Vale ... another part of the old BBC to close As a child I was fascinated by the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The home of these mysterious mavericks was BBC Maida Vale. Members of the Radiophonic Workshop seldom worked together and were scattered throughout the building (more of them another time....) The building was as mad and crazy as its occupants. In 1909 the Maida Vale Roller Skating Park and Club opened its doors. Within three months the largest indoor Skate Park in Europe was closed. After many organisations came and went, in 1933 the BBC took control. Fifteen months building work created seven modern recording studios. The complex hosted a varied group of users: BBC Symphony Orchestra (with BBC Singers and BBC Chorus); BBC Drama recorded plays; over 3,000 John Peel sessions were recorded; Radio 1 Live lounge; in fact live music sessions for all parts of BBC are recorded / broadcast daily.

Although updated it is still fundamentally the same as when it opened. As a result, the studio has a large collection of vintage studio equipment, valve organs, celestes* and pianos. Maida Vale is best viewed as a contemporary to Abbey Road. Both are a mixture of contemporary and history rubbing shoulders. As part of the continuous cost cutting Maida Vale is deemed too expensive to own and maintain. In 2023 the studio closes to be replaced by a purpose built complex at Olympic Park, East Stratford. Just another characterless studio. Another bit of our culture dies to save a bit of money.... * A Celeste looks like a tiny piano but sounds more like a glockenspiel:

The Rise and Fall of Peacehaven

When I moved to Peacehaven a short seven years ago it was a quiet, un-crowded, peaceful town. It was what it said on the label. A peaceful haven‌ That was due mainly to its building stock. The majority ( 95%) of which were two bedroom, two person; probably retired. bungalows. How it has changed in these seven short year. For the better or worse depend on your opinion." It seems to have become the overspill and building site for Lewes and East Sussex council so that they can comply with the governments "new build" housing quota. A typical " not in my back yard " solution. Every spare piece of ground in Peacehaven now has or will have a block of flats or some sort of development on it, with more in the pipeline. Bungalows are being extended with roof conversions, those on larger plots are being demolished then flats and even small housing estates built on them. All with no provision to improve the local services. The result of all this development is: You are lucky to get a doctors appointment; in one case you cannot even get to the Rowe Avenue surgery because Lewes Planning has allowed the contractor to close the road so they can use it for their unloading bay. The schools can't cope. The roads have become slalom courses because the bungalows have insufficient off road parking. The new flats have only one parking bay allocation for each flat where in reality each flat has 2/3 vehicles The pavements are used as parking bays by motorist, who park with impunity, because we never see a parking warden, likewise the police because the police station is now a block of flats. Once you could join the A259 after a small wait now that wait can be 5/10 minutes before a gap in the traffic occurs. The same applies to pedestrians trying to cross the road. Progress? There must be a moratorium on development in Peacehaven otherwise the town will collapse under its own weight. This whole fiasco reminds me of the two lines from a 1960s pop song " They've turned our local pally into a bowling alley. things ain't what they used to be " How apt.

Cycle Seahaven - Bike rides for all abilities and ages July is a great month for cycling as the weather is typically warm and dry, the winds are much lighter in strength and the days are longer in terms of daylight hours. So, this is probably the best month of the year to go cycling.
At Cycle Seahaven we organise lots of rides for both onroad and off-road cyclists. The rides are quite varied in terms of distance, terrain and cycling ability. Take a look at our Rides Calendar at www.cycleseahaven.org.uk/ calendar and you’ll see all the rides listed. Each ride is graded, for example 3B, to help you choose one that is suitable for you; there’s an explanation of the grading system on the website. If you don’t see something that suits you then it’s worth taking another look a few days later as the calendar is frequently updated with new rides. You don’t have to be a member if you want to try out any of our rides. You can cycle on a maximum of three rides before joining our club. There are now over 300 members in Cycle Seahaven of which the majority choose to cycle on off-road rides. There’s plenty of these rides for beginners through to very experienced cyclists. Many rides go across the South Downs and also through Friston Forest. A significant minority of members prefer on-road rides and on Sunday mornings, there are often three such rides starting at the Martello Tower on Seaford Promenade at 8.30am. They are all for reasonably fit and experienced cyclists. One ride is for ‘touring’ cyclists who prefer to cycle at an average speed of about 12 mph, another ride is for faster cyclists, ie the ‘sportives’ who cycle about 50 % quicker and a third ride for ‘intermediates’ whose average is about 14 to 15 mph. Often, all three rides will meet up at a café during the morning such as the one shown in the photo below.

There are three touring rides each week, on Tuesday and Thursday as well as on Sunday. Our Tuesday touring rides now incorporate sections of shorter, flatter routes aimed at those wanting to get back into cycling. We call this ‘Easy Touring’ and the typical route distance is 11 miles. Our touring rides aren’t just about the cycling; the refreshment stops are a key part of our rides. We are blessed with some superb cafés and tea gardens in the local countryside, some being community-based and run by volunteers. We now have a list of thirty refreshment stops which we frequent where cyclists are always given a warm welcome. You need a road-worthy bicycle to participate in any of our rides so, if you have an old bike which you haven’t cycled on for many years, then try our ‘Dr Bike’. Since March 2018, Dr Bike has gone from strength to strength; 52 Bikes in Seaford and 40 Bikes in Peacehaven have had a safety check and any simple fixes carried out. The club members give their time for free and have raised over £200 for the Club’s nominated charity: Cycling Without Age (Seaford Chapter). Seaford Council Offices / Police Station Forecourt on the first Saturday of each month from 10:00am – 12:15pm Big Park, Peacehaven on the third Saturday of each month from 10:00am – 12:15pm. So, now that Summer is here, why not get out on your bike and, if you’re retired, try the Tuesday ‘Easy Touring’ rides.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites: ANIMAL AND CHAIR YOGA FUNDRAISER FOR SALTDEAN LIDO In response to the plea for fundraising for the Lido buildings and because I teach Yoga there, I wanted to offer something to appeal to all ages to help raise money for this cause. We had great fun and raised money with the help and support of local people and businesses; thanks to Saltdean Zone for helping with promotion, Saltdean Tavern for the 10% off offer for attendees, the Lido members and the all lovely local people who volunteered and attended. Animal Yoga Many yoga poses use English names based on the animals they represent. The poses can be adapted to suit children of all ages. The kids can join in to do the poses and make the animal noises related to the poses, run around doing their own thing, or just watch the from the sidelines. This is a fun way to engage children into yoga in a fun and freely expressive way. The more boisterous kids can let off steam by doing more vigorous poses to start with before calming them down towards the end before sending them home. On the right you can see us doing the frog pose accompanied by a cacophony of "rivet rivet", the crab pose, lion's breath with a load "roar" and calming down with starfish. Other poses we did included butterfly, camel, cat, cow, crane, crocodile, dog, eagle, locust, snake, swan and handstand just for fun. "Lin's Animal Yoga was fantastic! My two boys loved posing and jumping as different animals, Great fun. They are keen to do it again!" "Animal yoga for children was great! It was fun and engaging. My daughter really enjoyed it! She has been practicing animal poses ever since. Lin is very good with children and it's a great way to get them into yoga" Chair Yoga This is an adaptation of yoga poses that can be done simply in a chair to help improve flexibility. This is useful for people who spend long hours sitting, such as at a desk or in planes, train and automobiles and for texter's neck. It is also for people who are injured or less able to move around as they can benefit from the increased flexibility and breathing without stressing their bodies. "Great for people who are new to yoga, have limited flexibility or maybe problems with knees and joints. Feels like a proper yoga experience and is immensely enjoyable". "I have enjoyed chair yoga very much. I have always wanted to try it but the lack of flexibility was holding me back. During Lin's chair yoga class I have learned breathing techniques and a few easy but beneficial poses to carry on practicing yoga in my own time" "As a mature woman with an aversion to organised exercise I approached a session of Chair Yoga with Lin unenthusiastically. It turned out to be perfect for me, a combination of stretching and getting postures right with explanations from Lin on what muscles were being affected for better and worse. Together with gentle breathing and soft music, excellent." I have been asked to run these classes more often and am happy to do so if there is interest, please let me know. NEWS FROM ASCENSION CHURCH - BRAMBER AVENUE, PEACEHAVEN The recent weeks have continued to be very busy and both inside the premises, as well as the extensive grounds, are in great shape due to the efforts of a busy team of volunteers. The Sunday service for all the family at 9.30 am is ever busier. A particular change has been in the age range of the congregation. Every week more spaces have to be made for buggies and push chairs and the Kids Club which runs alongside the service is growing in numbers with several new leaders helping out. It certainly is an all age church family. Why not come and join us one week? The Tykes and Trikes group which meets every Thursday morning in the church hall for preschoolers and their parents, recently ran a table top sale on a Saturday morning. If you missed it, I am afraid the cakes and coffee are now a memory! There was a wide range of products for sale, the hall was busy, and several hundreds of pounds was raised. Perhaps more people than expected found their way to the sale as in conjunction with East Sussex County Council we have arranged for new signs pointing to the church to be erected on the A259. Look out for them!

The church family will also be out and about with a stall at Peacehaven Summer Fair on Saturday July 14�� from 10am till 4pm. Lets hope we have a sun kissed fun day. Come and say hello. On Saturday July 7�� from 3pm to 5pm we will be repeating the Cream Tea Afternoon which was such a triumph when we did it last year. At £3 we reckon it is the best value cream tea around! If the weather is good it will be under awnings in the church grounds, if not it will be held in the hall. Crowds from the local community came last year so don't be late, we don't want the scones to run out!
