The AMD AM1 lives up to the hype ....I know, I have built one...... Within days of writing the article about S the new AM1 processors last month I got the opportunity to built one. I chose the range topping AMD Athlon 5350 Quad core processor. I used 1600 GHz DDR3 memory and paired it with 128GB Solid State Disc (1TB Hybrid costs an extra ÂŁ10). Motherboards are rather scarce at the moment, so I had to do some serious hunting to find the ASUS A1M-A. This is currently the best featured AM1 motherboard with VGA, DVI, HDMI, 4xUSB 2.0, 2xUSB 3.0, Gigabit LAN, 1xPS2 and 3x Audio on the back panel. Uniquely it is the only one to support USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 front ports. My first impression about the new form factor was how small everything was. The processor and its fan are almost toy like. The ASUS board is small but roomy enough to work on because many of the standard chips reside on the CPU. Many builders will use the even smaller ITX form factor with no significant loss in facilities. The finished computer was quiet and responsive, belying its modest budget. The on board graphics played YouTube smoothly in 1080P HD without grumble. A guide price for this type of machine with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 is ÂŁ349.99, so not outrageous.

Lioness & Lions Club News

Seahaven Lioness Club News A lot of the Club’s activities of late have been in the western part of our Seahaven area, although by the time this issue comes out we hope that our Saturday stalls in Broad Street will be in full swing, with our traditional plant stall on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend of May 24��. Elsewhere we have been holding monthly coffee mornings at the Meridian Centre in Peacehaven, which provide a modest but steady income, and on 13�� April we were allocated a slot to run a Car Boot Sale at the Dell, also in Peacehaven. It was the first one of the regular Car Boots held there throughout the summer season and organised by various charities. It was also a very pleasant day and these two factors combined to produce a successful event. At the end of March a cheque was presented to Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs Scout Group towards their new minibus. On Thursday 1�� May a group of Lionesses from Seahaven Lioness Club and a group of Lions from NP&S Lions Club met at the Martello Tower to greet fellow Lions who were undertaking a gruelling charity cycle ride along the South coast. Lions Susan Saunders and Lion Maurice Allen from Adur East Club in Shoreham were driven to Cornwall the previous week by Seahaven Lioness Sue Jenkins, who also picked them up from Dover at the end of their trip. They arrived in Seaford bang on time, where they were presented with cheques by both Lions and Lionesses.

They were then entertained to lunch by the Lionesses. Susan and Maurice are raising money for LIBRA (www.libralionscharity.org), a Lions International sponsored medical research facility based in London, which is doing great work seeking causes and treatments for a variety of blood disorders, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. They were supported throughout their trip by members of various Lions Clubs, who provided hospitality, refreshment and moral support, as well as donations to the cause. In August the Lionesses are organising a tea party at Seaford Golf Club in aid of LIBRA – watch this space for further details.

This involved you the public buying a numbered square, if your square was the pre selected number then you won a large Easter Egg. This raise £1200 which we will use to buy four lockable bedside cabinets for the new St Wilfred’s Hospice. Spotlight On Peacehaven Players

IN THE SPOTLIGHT… FLY ME! This Summer your local theatre group the Peacehaven Players are bringing you FLY ME!, a brand new musical comedy full of everyone’s favourite pop and show songs. This feel good show has been written by Judith Foot who also penned last year’s success story – The Wow Factor. Here she tells us more… We all love going on holiday, especially to sunny seaside destinations, so what better setting than the Costa Del Sol for this comedy about a group of tourists who are just looking for a get away from it all holiday. Fly Me Holidays are the tour operator who aim to ensure their clients are kept fully entertained from start to finish, however their skills are put to the test when it becomes apparent that the holidaymakers have their own agendas, including illicit liaisons and murder! The Bell family, Mum, Dad, Gran and their daughter Laura are all looking for a relaxing holiday, however Gran has hidden a strange object in her suitcase which causes concern at the airport and when it disappears from her room at the Hotel, the Fly Me staff are left to pick up the pieces. Emily and Tom are on their honeymoon, but his surprise destination is not the one Emily had in mind and their relationship is put under strain as she comes to terms with her new situation.

St Maud’s School for Girls and their teacher are on their way to the Torremolinos Dance Competition, watch out for Peacehaven’s own very talented Harlequin dancers as they go through their routines. With the heady combination of cocktails and sunshine, cruises and nightlife, relationships are formed which will last far longer than the holiday itself. Mix in to the comedy some well loved toe tapping songs set to entertaining routines and you have a recipe for a fabulous show.

Mo and her three friends are on a girly holiday and their mission is to try as many different cocktails as possible, but Mo has a secret, and someone is watching her. Louise has just won her way through to the second round of X-Factor and is on her way to the judges’ house when she meets Frank, her Fly Me rep, she’s trying to stay focused on her future but he pops up when she least expects it. Charles Nicholas is trying to ignore his wife’s indiscretions but she is increasingly becoming an embarrassment to him, when he seeks solace with another woman he unleashes a deadly reaction.

Record breaking season NOW the dust has settled on an outstanding season, preparations are in full swing for the challenges the new season will bring to The Sports Park… A record breaking league championship success saw Peacehaven & Telscombe FC win the Ryman South League by eighteen clear points ahead of their nearest rivals Folkestone Invicta. And into the bargain the team scored an astonishing 128 goals. Life in the Ryman Premier League next season will almost certainly be extremely demanding but fans of the Magpies are looking forward to welcoming some illustrious non – league teams to the Sports Park next season. These include the likes of Bognor Regis Town, Lewes, who a few seasons ago were playing in the Football Conference, former Football League side Maidstone Utd, Hendon, Margate, Enfield and Kingstonian. Work to upgrade the ground with the addition of a new grandstand behind the west goal are in hand. These works need to be completed by March 2015. As part of the club’s player development programme it is entering an under 21 team into the Ryman Premier U21 league. This will give local youngsters the chance to play against some of the best non - league players in Sussex, Kent, Surrey and Suffolk and will also allow a smooth transition from the U21 squad to the senior squad.

The success of the club in the last two years has taken many people by surprise and Pitchside View urges as many of the two town’s football fans as possible to support their local team. If you are one of the many Albion supporters that lives in the area and are at a loose end when the Albion are away and Peacehaven are at home, come along and join other duel club supporters. You can watch games in comfort and take advantage of the club’s superb social club. OOH! LA! LA! IN THE SPOTLIGHT I was invited this month to receive a beauty treatment with Melanie Brown, Proprietor of Ooh La La Beauty. Melanie has been a mobile therapist for a while but has now taken a room in Newhaven’s Platinum Gym… Platinum Gym is located under the swing bridge in Newhaven in the Industrial estate. It can be a little tricky to find on your first visit. Memberships to the gym start from £25 or £5.80 for a day pass. Melanie offers the usual beauty treatments at reasonable prices such as waxing, tanning, massage etc. She also offers two specialist treatments. The first is Skin Base Microdermabrasion. This is a system of intense exfoliation and resurfacing using ultra fine crystals that rejuvenate the skin. The Crystals are used to remove dead skin cells whilst the vacuum action of the machine stimulates circulation, blood flow and the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in firmer and more youthful looking skin. Because several layers of your skin are removed it promotes better absorption of your regular beauty products. This treatment is great for pigmentation, acne and acne scarring, ageing and sun damage, uneven skin tone and stretch marks. The second specialist treatment is cosmetic teeth whitening. Melanie is a full trained technician for LoveLite’s cosmetic teeth whitening procedure. A gel with a tiny amount of bleach is used along with a magenta light. It takes 1 hour and creates zero sensitivity. The results are sparkling celebrity looking teeth. I had a well earned back, neck and shoulder massage and melted away to a soothing music and aromatherapy oils and scents. The massage was gentle but effective. I could really feel those stressed areas located and calmed. I am going back next week to try Shellac, the 2 week manicure. This is a gel that is painted onto your nails. Some will do anything for a free drink! Local Historian and Author Stanley Bernard has published a new book “News from Victorian Newhaven”. Here is a sample of one of the articles that did not make the final cut… In February 1884, there was yet another shipping disaster along our coast, the Simla had been in a collision with another ship near the Isle of White. It appears that she made her way further along the coast to be a complete wreck near Brighton. The cargo was washed ashore along Sussex coast between Black Rock, Brighton and Seaford. She had been carrying numerous “36 gallon casks of Wine” as well as Brandy other spirits and Burton Ale, which the coastguard and police did their best to recover. The local residents of Rottingdean, and Newhaven on the Friday morning found the wreckage and also went to the beach to recover the liquor – for themselves. The London Standard reported the “disgraceful scenes” of drunkenness and the fact that stomach pumps had to be used on some patients at the hospital. Other newspapers of the day reported that rather than take the casks home the locals drank straight from them. By 5pm of the Friday afternoon at least 20 men and boys were “helplessly drunk”, many were removed to the coastguard stations to recover. Other reporters claimed that between 2 and 300 “roughs” from Brighton to join in the free drink. There were no police or coastguards at Portabello where 300 casks were washed ashore. As there was coastguard station here it must be assumed that they had gone to Rottingdean and Ovingdean Gap where the disgraceful people from Brighton were using there hat to drink from not wishing to spill a drop! Some were so drunk that it was thought that some had drowned on the beach.

This left those at Saltdean, Telscombe and Newhaven to keep the brushes (later sold at 6d each) boots, scent bottles, jeweller and furniture as well as the odd bottle of alcohol. Barrels may have gone back home but many again were opened where they landed. The Illustrated Police News 16�� February 1884 gave a graphic description of the death of John Mockford a labourer of Telscombe, aged 44, who died early on the Sunday morning in hospital. PC Dibley the policeman at Rottingdean saw John on the beach at Saltdean and went to fetch Henry Mockford his brother to take him home. John still drunk at 7am, indicated he just wanted to lie where he was. Three hours later Henry returned his brother was still drunk on the cliff top where he had been left. At noon some warm tea was brought but this made him sick. Luckily a doctor was found who thought John should be taken to hospital. John Mockford and George Patching a work colleague had both gone to the beach together to drink the free sherry. George left earlier while his friend was drinking as much as he could with his hands. It may not have been his usual way of drinking but his brother said John was often intoxicated and left to sleep it of on the cliffs. At the inquest into his death the verdict of the hospital medical officer was that it was caused by pneumonia, although alcohol may have helped bring about the pneumonia.

Local History: Peacehaven Companies In recent articles you may have read about the entrepreneur Charles Neville and his ambitious plans to develop the land between Newhaven and Rottingdean by selling plots to potential home owners. His South Coast Land & Resort Company spawned many other companies… By Mike Laslett

Peacehaven Building & Supply Company Ltd. built homes on the purchasers’ plots with 2 bedroom bungalows built in 1923 for as little as £500. It was often recommended that two of the 100ft. x 25ft. plots be purchased in order that there would be sufficient access to both sides of the home. Space- saving suggestions were made, such as including a serving hatch between the kitchen and the sitting room and that the bath should be fitted with a lid to provide a low table or seat. The company also published a book of designs for two storey houses and shops for 2/6d (12.5p!) As well as carrying out general building works the company staff erected utility poles and planted trees as may be seen in the photos. The alteration and repair department of Peacehaven Building and Supply Company Ltd. built garages, greenhouses, garden sheds, hen houses and fences. Their stores sold all the necessary building materials; from sand and bricks to baths and water tanks, for those building their own homes. Even second hand material was available. The Peacehaven Electric Light & Power Company Ltd. was yet another arm of the estate company. The Company also supplied coal for those not enjoying the electric heating of The Peacehaven Electric Light & Power Company Ltd. Yet another company was the Peacehaven Water Company Ltd; who provided a piped domestic water supply for £4 a year.

Peacehaven Charity Superhero Fun Run On a dark Tuesday in September, somewhere in the aftermath of an evening’s circuit training a handful of particularly exhausted young ladies asked me... “Do you think we’d be able to take part in a sponsored fun run next year?”… Delighted with the enthusiasm and determination for exercise that was growing exponentially week on week, I suggested instead of taking part in someone else’s event, why not do our own? I tasked the group with nominating a charity of their choice and coming up with a theme and one week later my company, Phoenix Fit Solutions Ltd, launched the Peacehaven 5km Superhero Fun Run in aid of The Rockinghorse Children’s Charity.

We were even lucky enough to have Ellie Hoad of Aniseed Photography capture the event on film and Heart FM were gracious enough to let me brag about our incredible event on the radio!

The following 6 months saw these incredible individuals hit the streets to start their training routines. Their regular updates on social media sites of routes and run times kept everyone motivated and eager for ‘Race Day’ to arrive. Soon, photographs were appearing of fancy dress costumes fit for any budding superhero, all to pay tribute to those real-life superhero’s who nurse East Sussex’s sick children back to health every day.

It was days like those that reminded me why I trained to do what I do. Phoenix Fit Solutions Ltd was born out of a passion for living and from a very raw understanding of how life changing activity can be both physically and mentally. When we are active and motivated, we ooze positivity, and a network of positive people in our communities can only be a wonderful thing. Every week I see new faces at my exercises classes across Peacehaven and Seaford. The classes are full of people just starting out, or progressing on their journeys to a more positive way of living, and there is nothing more rewarding than being able to be a part of their journey.

On the 29�� March this year 27 determined participants of all ages (and even one lovely dog!) pounded the streets of Peacehaven with one sole aim, to make the lives of sick children in East Sussex better. The atmosphere on that sunny Saturday morning was overwhelming, the support from local Councillors, residents and shops was incredible.

The group raised over £500 for their charity and had the best time doing it! These individuals are proof of how powerful one small group can be to their community, and that one person really can make a difference. Thank you to all of you.

ABC Fund News The abcfund is a very local charity run by local residents here in the heart of Peacehaven. Set up twenty two years ago, it is designed to provide trips and treats for local underprivileged children and their families. Over the years the abcfund has provided Christmas food hampers, pantomime tickets, theatre tickets, holiday breaks and days out for the benefit of many Peacehaven families. Our plans for this year are already under way. We have 20 Young Carers going to London for a day out by train, a group of children visiting the woods for a bushcraft day and some special needs children visiting a play centre in the school holidays. We have already booked our pantomime in Eastbourne, sorted out our Christmas food hamper finance and are just about to book the Santa Express, Bluebell Railway. The abcfund now needs support from Peacehaven. Everything we do is completely voluntary and all funds go directly to supporting our families. We need to be able to offer some of this to our children right here in our town. We also need local businesses to sponsor what we do. So please, if you want to raise funds for us or are aware of needy children, we need to know. The Senior Golfers of Peacehaven hit the headlines… By: Brian Chatfield Congratulations to PTFC on their second successive championship. The senior golfers of Peacehaven have also hit the headlines this week. Senior members of Peacehaven Golf Club residing in Peacehaven & Telscombe challenged those members living in Newhaven & Seaford in a match following the lines of the Ryder Cup. Round ! was played as a 4 ball match with P&T edging ahead by 4 - 2. The second and final round played, in atrocious conditions, was 12 x singles match play with P&T winning the inaugural competition by 3 clear points.

A great time was had by all and one senses that next years run will be very competitive. P&T have a trophy to keep hold of with N&S wanting to retaliate.

PEACEHAVEN YOUTH By Tasha Kendall Our under 12 team were invited to a tournament in March in Seaford. The boys won this which meant they had to travel to Basingstoke to compete in the regional finals. Again they won the tournament which meant they were now invited to compete in the National Finals in Manchester. So last weekend we travelled to Manchester where the boys played seven games and won 6. The only team to beat them in the group stages met them again in the final and I am so pleased to report they won 1-0 and were crowned National Champions. It was fantastic. As parents and as a club we are so proud of them. The players were James Kendall, Owen Walsh, Charlie Rocks, Beau Langhan, Callum Edwards, Gilles Cheeta & Tom Radley Martin. The manager is Jason Edwards.
