An Open Internet Is Important... ... to thrive and to innovate

The Internet started out as an open system for sharing information. There are three significant concepts here. i) the creation of a network that can easily be joined ii) clearly defined technical standards iii) the system is open to content If a government department or commercial organisation ruled the Internet it would be unlikely to have so many uses. The Internet would have developed at a snails pace, with new applications incurring extra fees to access certain features. The closest comparison we have is with satellite television. With Sky the standard package is little different from Freesat, to watch more interesting programmes you have to subscribe to extra packages eg Sky Sports. There have been several unsuccessful attempts in America to introduce extra fees for having connections that can sustain streaming TV, film and music, to effectively create a two-tier Internet. Some UK ISPs have also moaned about iPlayer and YouTube hogging the network and mooted similar ideas but these have been firmly quashed. Without the free structure of the Internet, it would have developed into a glorified teletext with email. Imagine this, without an open Internet no: iPods, MP3 players, iPlayer, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, online radio, Amazon, eBay, Spotify or blogs. A Shore Escape for Feet

My feet that is…

I used to be a Reflexologist. You would think that I would pay more attention to my feet. Well I don’t, there I have admitted it. I was asked by Carly of local company Shore Escape, to come and have a treatment, I asked her to surprise me, so when she said I was going to have a pedicure I winced. I have a bad back so about all I do to my feet is trim the toe nails, apply a bit of cream once or twice a week and hope for the best.

During the treatment Carly and I chatted happily about life (this is optional as she will respect the wishes of the client). I felt relaxed and happy in her little beach hut salon at the bottom of her garden. It is totally secluded and free from the hustle and bustle of life but compact and warm with just the right amount of natural light. It was a very blustery day, you could hear the wind outside but this just added to the experience.

First my feet were soaked in a lovely bubbly foot spa, then they were treated to a mask while my nails were cut and properly shaped and work began on my cuticles (which I don’t think have ever been touched). Eventually hot towels were applied to remove the scrub. My feet were then exfoliated and hard skin expertly removed and my feet were massaged. I could not believe how good they felt. Really light and the heaviness in my feet and ankles had gone. It was funny to think that the tension in my body could be relieved and that my body would detox through a pedicure, but that was what happened. I chose a lovely dark red polish that was applied to my toe nails and Carly added the finishing touches with a little flower decoration to my big toe nails.

I would never had chosen this treatment for myself but I think I will be going back as it was not only aesthetically pleasing but really did have a benefit to my body and well-being. Before I met Carly I would never had gone to a Salon for beauty treatments. With the down-to-earth but caring way Carly treats you she made me a convert and I will be booking again in a few weeks for my next escape. AFTER A rollercoaster of a season, it all came down to the last game. At the start of the match The Magpies were sitting fourth from bottom and in the final relegation spot. If Peacehaven & Telscombe could just grind out a victory and one of the four teams above them lost, Peacehaven would be safe and stay in the Ryman Premier League. At half-time Peacehaven were leading 2-0 against Hampton & Richmond - who themselves were assured of Ryman Premier League football next season - and looked to be in charge of the game.

(Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgefordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips Tennis Elbow A common musculoskeletal condition, known as lateral epicondylitis, causing pain on the outside of the elbow, near the joint. Although it is usually self-limiting, meaning it gets better without treatment, symptoms may last 6-24 months. Pain on the inside of the elbow, medial epicondylitis is less common and known as golfer's elbow. Anatomy: The elbow joint is surrounded by muscles that move the elbow, wrist and fingers. The tendons in the elbow join the bones and muscles together, and control the muscles of your forearm. Symptoms: Pain ranges from mild discomfort while using the elbow to severe pain even when the elbow is still. It can be felt on the outside of upper forearm, below the elbow bend and can travel down to the wrist, forearm and back of hand. Pain can be experienced when lifting, bending or extending the arm, twisting the forearm to open a jar or door handle or gripping small objects, like a pen or screwdriver. Causes: Strenuous overuse of the muscles and tendons, particularly those of the forearm which are used to straighten the wrist. Strain can cause tiny tears and inflammation where these attach near the bony lump at the outside of the elbow, called the lateral epicondyle. This can result from repetitive activities that twist the wrist such as racquet sports, throwing javelin or discus, decorating with a paintbrush or roller, using a screwdriver, garden shears or scissors, typing or playing the violin, etc. Diagnosis: If rest does not ease the pain, the doctor will check for swelling and tenderness and ask you to extend your fingers and flex your wrist with elbow extended; ultrasound or MRI scans are only used if nerve damage is a suspected cause of pain. Treatment: No single intervention proven the most efficient, some combination treatments give better results; more studies are needed.

Physical Therapy/Osteopathy massage and manipulation to relieve pain, encourage blood flow, improve movement. Resistance exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles, reduce pain, improve grip strength. Strapping, taping, support bandage or splint to reduce pain, improve grip strength. Cyriax deep friction techniques and supervised exercise program both beneficial; conflicting studies regarding treatment of choice between these two and steroid injections. Acupuncture with needles and laser beneficial short term. Platelet rich injections using an extract of the person's own blood; not proven effective. Bone marrow injections using plasma rich in growth factors and mesenchymal stem cells; significant short to medium term improvement, further development needed. Corticosteroid injections into the joint may help reduce pain; long term effectiveness not proven. Medicinal leech therapy used where pain is major symptom. Leeches inject saliva with anti-inflammatory, thrombolytic, anti-coagulant and blood and lymph circulation enhancing properties into the tissues during blood withdrawal; specific analgesic substance in leech saliva not yet identified. Leech therapy pain relief is often rapid, effective and long lasting. Drugs painkillers like paracetamol and anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, also available as topical cream or gel. Shock wave therapy through the skin may reduce pain, can cause minor bruising and skin reddening; more research needed. Non-surgical treatments not better in longer term. Surgery Arthroscopy may be recommended as a last resort, to remove the damaged part of the tendon. Prevention: Avoid straining elbow tendons and using the wrist and elbow more than the rest of the arm, include larger upper arm and shoulder muscles. Improve technique and strength for sports and activities than can cause tennis elbow; warm up and stretch beforehand. Use tools/rackets of appropriate weight for your strength and keep grip size bigger to avoid strain. GIVING A VOICE TO YOUR INNER EXPERIENCE A day of peace, relaxation & exploration on July 28�� 2015 On the brow of Seaford Head, Sussex, sits Florence House; rock solid in the sea air and surrounding wild landscape. In many ways its situation is a metaphor for its life’s purpose - a haven for the spirit however the wind blows. It lovingly embraces divine inspiration, the sacredness and potential of each individual and the healing power of the landscape in which it sits We start the day with some gentle yoga, stretching the body, exploring the breath, withdrawing from thought into "just being". Yoga is defined as 'union', and includes postures, meditation and mantra. In this session we experience the union of mind, body and inner self. We each work within our own capabilities so the practice is suitable for everyone. Relaxed and energised, we move out into the garden for a walking meditation, returning to a oneness with nature feeling the grass underfoot, hearing the sounds of the birds and the trees, inhaling the scents of summer. Then it’s a break for lunch. Florence House is renowned for delicious and creative home cooking produced by their own chefs. Produce is locally sourced where possible or from their own kitchen garden.

Then we will move into short, easy, guided meditations culminating in a longer visualization. Following this, we will use a range of art materials to create personal (and maybe private) works of art. This is not art for public consumption but art as self-expression. Through the use of colour, lines, shapes, images or even squiggles, you are invited to use a language other than words to say something about what you have experienced during the yoga, the meditations and the visualizations. The aim is simply to encourage you into a closer connection with your own innerself. Peacehaven & Telscombe Flower Club 1 year on It is now a year since Peacehaven and Telscombe Flower Club was formed. It has proved to be a great success and we are now celebrating our First Anniversary, with a cake made by one of our members. At club meetings we have had demonstrators showing us beautiful floral designs, speakers on flower related topics and workshops. We have also been involved in the community by holding coffee mornings and having a table at the Summer and Christmas fetes. Over the year the club has raised £250 for the Hearing Dogs charity, to sponsor the training of a puppy called Rose. This year our chosen charity is the ABC fund for disadvantaged children. It has been inspiring to find so many people coming to our meetings, not only for the flowers but for the friendly and social atmosphere. ‘Southern Stomp’ Celebrating 20 years! Local Line Dance Club “Southern Stomp” hosted an afternoon of dancing for Club members with guest artist Alan Gregory at Telscombe Hall last week end.

The varied social programme means that non dancing partners can enjoy the monthly activities as well as the dancers.

Alan performed three sets of old favourites and new country songs to the appreciative audience who enjoyed an afternoon of line dancing and a welcome tea break!

Hard of Hearing Club If you're thinking of taking a dip in the sea this summer, Seaford could be the safest place to swim! That is according to Peter Gwilliam of Seaford Lifeguards whose aim is to "keep Seaford Bay free from danger and to prevent loss of life". Peter came to the Hard of Hearing Club on Friday 1 May to talk to us on the training and work carried out by the lifeguard volunteers. We were all captivated by his stories and delighted that, as he said, " you don't need a mike to hear me" True! The Hard of Hearing Club meets on the first Friday of each month at St James Club House in Blatchington Road. Currently the meetings start at 2pm. Hope to see you at our next meeting on the 5th of June 2015 when we will be having a Games Afternoon. Look forward to meeting you.

LIP READING CLASSES We'd love to invite you to our fun, friendly and fantastic Lip Reading Classes. The classes are on a Tuesday morning at 10am at the Baptist Church in Belgrave Road, Seaford. Newcomers are always welcome in fact as a taster you are invited to attend two sessions without charge. After that the charge will be £21 per six sessions, which includes membership of the Hard of Hearing Club. The lessons are lighthearted covering such subjects as Harrods, The London Overground or even Fairies! Our teacher Gill, being profoundly deaf herself gives you all the help she can. Gill is patient and always willing to repeat a word or a sentence. Lip reading is about the shapes our lips make. We learn that our lips make different shapes and some letters can look the same for example the letters P, B and M. Say it yourself, Peat, Beat, Meat and feel your lips move. Your eye and mind soon learn to work out what Gill is saying. If you come along and join us, we'll make sure you have nice cuppa tea too!
