Q.What I would do as the new Prime Minister? Something radical to benefit many people for little cost When BT was privatised a serious error was made. One part should have been retained in public hands: the infrastructure division (currently branded as BT Openreach). Openreach has two contradictory roles: i) to make profits for BT ii) to expand and update the network for all In theory their target is to speed up the internet infrastructure, the reality is different. Improvements are only made if they generate profit for BT. This sounds perfectly reasonable but actually creates terrible inequality. Locally, I cannot have Fibre because we are on a sub-cabinet. Some homes have aluminium phone lines which means internet speeds are less than 2Mb - so catch up TV, YouTube etc are virtually unwatchable. These are all easily fixable but will not be resolved as there is no profit in it. BT have pushed those on aluminium lines to upgrade to Fibre to get 6Mbs (ÂŁ10 to ÂŁ15 extra) rather than replace the cable. I know of many holes in the network locally but BT will not sort them until they can get someone else to fund them. If BT Openreach was re-nationalised, like Railtrack, then there would be a single priority - provide everyone with a fast quality infrastructure; not just if it is profitable.

Unless something changes, the problem will get worse......

(Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips Sciatica - Low Back Pain with Many Causes Sciatica is a common type of pain caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Anatomy: The spine typically has 24 vertebrae; 7 neck, 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar. The vertebrae turn on facet joints, arched wing-like structures that stick out either side of the rear part of the vertebrae. They stop the vertebrae from bending and twisting too far and protect the spinal cord, the vital network of nerves running through the centre of each vertebra. Nerves exit the spine from the either side of spaces between two vertebral bodies, separated by an intervertebral disc. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, going from the pelvis, through the buttocks, down the legs to the feet. Intervertebral discs, complex fibro-cartilaginous structures that act as shock absorbers for daily activities separate the vertebrae. They are about 2.5cm in diameter and 5mm thick with a tough, fibrous outer membrane called the annulus fibrous, an elastic core inside called the nucleus pulposus and a cartilaginous endplate. The cells of these structures change as we age; starting as gel, fluid filled sacs in children and hardening to become less elastic and more prone to injury and degeneration with ageing producing pathological symptoms such as back pain and sciatica. Symptoms: Patients with chronic low back pain and sciatica, experience pain, burning, tingling or numbness radiating down their leg or foot due to compression or irritation of the lumbar nerve root. Pain is often worse when sitting and shooting pain can make it difficult to stand up; there can be pain in the buttock and weakness in the leg or foot. The reasons for this compression can be many and varied and the pain can be debilitating. Urgent medical attention is needed where there is loss of bladder or bowel control or progressive weakness in the lower limb.

Rare causes can be cysts, epidural veins and tumours, but often there is no obvious cause. Less serious causes can relate to myofascial imbalances, muscle spasms, nerve root irritation, inflammation and postural / biomechanical changes, such as those in pregnancy. Diagnosis: Thorough neurological and orthopaedic evaluation is needed; X-rays, MRI and CT scans as well as nerve conduction tests can confirm diagnosis. Medical history is taken, reflexes are tested and examination of back, hips, legs for strength and flexibility. Treatment: Medical interventions include anti-inflammatory pain medication, epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks and surgery. Studies are conflicting about which type of disc surgery is preferred, best timing of surgery and long term outcomes; your doctor will advise you based on a full diagnosis. Management: Studies are conflicting regarding preferred management. Manipulative therapy showed useful for back pain though not always for sciatica. Targeted exercise and stretching can be helpful; bed rest is not helpful and staying active and strong is important in the long term; though debilitating pain of acute sciatica can make it difficult to exercise. Acupuncture dry needling to specific muscles helped as did targeted deep soft tissue massage. Risk factors: Modifiable risk factors included smoking, obesity, occupational factors and health status. In March the team looked safe from the drop, but now with one game left to play, Peacehaven & Telscombe sit fourth from bottom in the league and are in danger of being relegated to Ryman South. Everything rests on the final game of the season which takes place after the deadline for this edition of Peacehaven Directory – a game that Peacehaven need to win to have a chance of staying in the Ryman Premier League. Work to upgrade the ground so it reaches the necessary standard for Ryman Premier League football has now been completed.

An additional 100 seats have been installed plus a stand to accommodate 100 standing spectators. Also the turnstiles have been moved and an additional one installed and more fencing has been erected. With the work completed the club subsequently passed its ground grading inspection. The club’s Stand or Fall campaign to raise funds for the work has so far achieved more than £10,000.

We are beginning to get more active now that spring is approaching. It is about time the weather got a bit warmer and this would encourage us a bit more. So what have we been doing? We started the month with a fun event for people with a disability. This took the form of It’s a Knockout at Longhill School, and was a Zone event. We had eight teams who took part in various games and generally enjoyed themselves with a lunchtime disco. Each participant got a medal at the end of the day, presented by the mayor of Brighton. Our main money raisers this month have been our Easter Egg raffle in the pubs. If you have visited the Plough and Harrow, Smugglers, Bell’s Club or been to Sainsbury’s you have probably seen us. I hope you bought a ticket. Thank you to the pubs for their support. The raffle this time is in aid of Coastwatch. These are the volunteers who sit up in the old coastguard tower on the cliffs at Newhaven watching out for problems along the coast. They need the money to buy equipment for this surveillance. We also had another Book Sale at Paradise Park. Thank you Paradise Park. £500 has been presented to Kempton House in Peacehaven to help with the running of the Old

Peoples Club there (see photo), £250 to Seaford in Harmony and the remaining £250 to the Peacehaven Guides for their adventure day. We have also had two social events - firstly a Scalextric evening with the rest of the Zone and our dinner meeting, this month at the Flying Fish, Denton. We had a very nice meal there, thank you. Our next big fund raising event will be our Half Marathon on the 7 June 2015. Visit our website www.npslions.co.uk and get your entry in. A Royal Visit for Peacehaven Peacehaven Town Council was delighted to receive His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester to officially open Centenary Park at Piddinghoe Avenue. On a glorious sunny day The Duke spent time meeting the park’s project team; the skate park designers, architects, landscape architects, playground builders and designers. A number of school children from Meridian School, Peacehaven Heights and PCS lined the route and also had the opportunity to see the Duke and wave their handmade flags. Peacehaven Council’s groundstaff (who will be maintaining the park) were presented to his Royal Highness. The Town Manager, Alan Sargent and Deborah Donovan the Town’s Civic officer (and event organiser) were also presented to the Duke. Guests, including The Chairman of Lewes District Council, all PTC staff and representatives from the following Peacehaven organisations; Bowls Club, Horticultural Society, Peacehaven & Telscombe FC and Residents Association gathered in the park’s café, ‘Molly’s, where The Mayor of Peacehaven welcomed His Royal Highness and asked him to unveil a commemorative plaque and sign the visitor’s book.

As the Duke took his leave he turned to guests and said ‘don’t get too sun burnt in this beautiful weather!’ The Town Manager said ‘it was a delightful morning and the town was privileged to receive such a distinguished guest.’ The facility is a tremendous asset to Peacehaven and will be used frequently by all ages.’ The plaque for the moment is on display at Community House, Meridian Centre along with the visitor’s book for locals and visitors to the area to view.

Paddle Round The Pier beach festival

Summers Coming - The worlds’ biggest charity beach festival takes place on July 4�� & 5�� 2015.

“Paddle” is an annual free event which sees visitor numbers of over 50,000 converge on the city of Brighton & Hove each year to celebrate all things Paddle sport & beach lifestyle related. This award winning Paddle Round The Pier has been run by volunteers since 1996 and raises thousands of pounds for charity each year. The “Paddle Village” consists of 80,000m² of exhibition, retail and free entertainment space. There are three music stages: the Main Music Stage featuring up and coming acts, The Ukulele Stage introducing some of the best 4-string-strumming from across the UK and an extremely popular Kids entertainment stage. Within the Paddle village is the Paddle Lecture Theatre, featuring 30 minute micro-lectures on oceanography, boatbuilding, surfboard design, big wave riding, Wind power through Kitesurfing among many other subjects. There are restaurants, bars, and lots of have-a-go sessions on land and sea for all to try. . On the prom will be the first ever Foffa bike skid contest, (how far can you skid a Foffa bicycle?) Skateboard ramps, land paddle racing, and the UK Slalom skate championships. On the Jeep Sand Arena will be the SLSGB Surf Lifesaving competitions, Beach Volleyball and beach Tennis. On the water will be 48 hours of the very best competitions the UK offers in SUP, Swim, Prone Paddleboard, Giant SUPs, Lifeguard, Ocean Skis & Inshore rescue boat racing.

The title event; Paddle Round The Pier itself takes place on the Sunday. This event creates a water-borne-blanket of entrants taking whatever they can get to float, surfboards, kayaks, dinghies etc and paddling round the wreckage of the old West Pier. The biggest crowd pleaser has to be the “Paddle Something Unusual” - the perfect opportunity for those less stable in the community to exercise their creativity and join in the Paddle. It’s the team part of the event aimed at businesses, groups of friends, pubs or sports clubs etc. In previous years we’ve had everything from aeroplanes to cranes, from a bed to a shed – the only guidelines are to make it as ridiculous (but safe) as possible, raise plenty of money – and have a spectacularly good laugh doing it! The charities chosen as the 2015 beneficiaries are; The RNLI, Rockinghorse (Local Children’s’ hospital) & Brighton kids Surf Life Saving Club.
