Has the Future finally arrived? Recent innovations have brought the future closer.... When I was a child I avidly watched Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlett and Star Trek with their tantalising glimpses of the future. The world seemed a whole lot better after 1999. The dawning S of 2000 was a bit of a letdown. Still no wafer-thin TVs, electric paper, wristphones or lights without bulbs. Fast forward to 2013 and the future of my childhood is becoming a whole lot closer to reality. We now have Kindles and Tablets (electric paper). The latest LED televisions now measure their depth in millimetres rather than inches. My office is lit with self-adhesive strips of LED lights that change their colour and brightness by remote. My phone is mobile, has a big colour screen and doubles up as an emergency computer. This Christmas the wristphone finally arrives! Samsung has brought out the Galaxy Gear which will link to a handful of Samsung mobile phones. This device at ÂŁ300 has limited functions but it does mean you can at last be like one of the Thunderbirds crew and talk into your watch. Sony, Pebble and others have more devices that will link to a wider range of phones. The fear in the industry was Apple would be first and kill the market for everyone else. Still no sign of the nuclear powered flying cars Maybe 2014....

Fundraising Success for Locals through Macmillan Coffee Morning When there is a call to fundraising arms, it would seem that Peacehaven and Telscombe businesses and residents really get going. There were many fundraising events for the annual Macmillan Coffee morning, here are some of the successes… The Telscombe Civic Centre held a coffee morning that I attended. You could chat over coffee and delicious cakes and sandwiches plus there were a few stalls of interest. I was given a lesson on how to put on a Saree by Caruna Valeny a Woodingdean resident who fundraises all year round for Breast cancer. Two of our very own businesses were there; Carole from Central Beauty who was performing lovely hand massages and Nail shapes. Sheila from the Flower Shed was also there with handmade items for sale. There was also a lovely array of vintage items and crafts on offer from Jemima’s Baskets who are local mums who sell through a facebook page. £286.07 was raised. Peacehaven Town Council were also busy with their Bring a bag - Buy a bag sale and raised £250.00. The residents raised £225.00 selling coffee etc. Lawson Lewis Blakers solicitors raised £275.80 for Macmillan on their coffee morning on 27�� September 2013. Mary Irving, Practice manager said, “ We are so grateful to the people who attended, they were amazingly generous. It is sometimes intimidating for people to visit a solicitors office, particularly as we are not directly on the High Street. Our staff showed their hidden talents with their wonderful cakes and even the senior partner, Jeremy Sogno made some, which were very popular. John Palmer at Big Mouths burger was also very helpful by displaying the remainder of our cakes in his Burger bar, it was a fantastic feeling of team and community spirit for a very worthy cause.”

PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate, entering the blood. It is not a direct test for cancer, a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Swedish researchers say PSA testing every man aged 45 – 49 would predict nearly half of all prostate cancer deaths.

Vets Abroad Andrea Rhodes works for Meridian Veterinary Practice in Peacehaven and Vetcall out of hour’s emergency hospital in Brighton and has been volunteering abroad for the charity Naturewatch where she is involved in a small animal neutering scheme. In 2012 Andrea volunteered to go to Samos (one of the Greek islands) for the Worldwide Veterinary Service with her daughter Harriet, who at the time was a first year Vet student. More recently she went to the Ukraine for the Naturewatch neutering scheme. Naturewatch promotes responsible pet ownership and neutering of cats and dogs abroad. The projected started after the press reports about stray animal numbers being reduced by shooting and poisoning before the European football matches held in Ukraine and Poland in 2012. Andrea flew to Kharkov in Eastern Ukraine, about 16 miles from the Russian border to spend a week neutering cats and dogs. She worked with three experienced Ukrainian vets and two vet students. Although the vets were experienced, the procedure isn’t routine for them unlike Andrea who has been neutering animals almost daily for 34 years. Cats belonging to members of the public were brought in and neutered while the owners waited in the waiting room until they were recovered and were ready to go home, whereas the dogs were often strays from the shelters. Andrea, alone, neutered about 10 animals a day in Ukraine working for 10 hours every day. Andrea also appeared on Ukrainian television to promote the benefits of having dogs and cats neutered.
Between 3 and 4 million adoptable animals are euthanized in animal shelters each year simply because they do not have homes. These high numbers are the result of unplanned litters that could have been prevented. Neutering dramatically reduces the number of stray animals on the streets and can help reduce the incidence of some of the most common types of cancers so your animal is likely to live a longer and healthier life. Andrea says volunteering is something that I have wanted to do for years, but didn’t have the time until my children had grown up. You could say I’m filling the gap they left when they went to University. I felt that I wanted to use my veterinary knowledge for a good cause. I worked for the PDSA for 23 years so I’m probably a charity vet at heart. I have spent years making cakes, helping out with PTA events, at scouts and brownie camps and fundraising for various local causes and I felt that it was time to use my professional abilities to help others. Volunteering gets me out of my daily routine and fires my enthusiasm for the job: it reminds me of why I became a vet.

Local History
Local Historian Mike Laslett who has provided local history information for the Deans Magazine for a few years has taken time to give us some insight into two of Peacehaven’s best known sights The pylon or monolith which was once one of four, a pair at each entrance to Peacehaven from the East and from the West. This one sadly has lost its twin, while the eastern pair near the speed camera fortunately still exists. They were erected in 1916 by the South Coast Land & Resort Company of Charles Neville to promote the Town. Each depicts the cliffs on which the town stands The Meridian Monument was erected to mark Peacehaven’s position astride The Greenwich Prime Meridian line which marks east from west. It was erected by public subscription at a cost of £300 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935. It was designed as an obelisk and drinking fountain by Richard Jones, architect of Saltdean Lido and the Ocean Hotel. It was unveiled on 30�� May 1936 by Charles Neville, the developer of Peacehaven. Today it still straddles the Prime Meridian so that you can stand with one foot in the Western Hemisphere and the other foot in the Eastern Hemisphere. However it has been moved inland twice as the cliff top crumbled away by erosion.

“I used to be so self-conscious in front of my clients and felt such a hypocrite telling other women how to look their best when I was overweight myself. Update from Saltdean Lido CIC We were delighted when, in September, Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company was announced as the provisional preferred bidder for the lease of the Lido complex. We are now in negotiation with Brighton and Hove City Council – freeholder of the site - over the details of the proposed lease and hope to have this completed in time for the report to go before the Council’s Policy & Resources Committee in December for approval. If this is done, the 'provisional' will be dropped. Sadly, it appears from the latest surveys that the building is in a much worse condition than first thought and there is no 'quick fix'. From the outside the building might look ok but surveys have revealed some serious problems with the concrete structure. A structural survey of the swimming pool has yet to be completed but it is likely that the entire plant equipment will need to be replaced. In the meantime the community centre will remain open for use – it is run by the Saltdean Community Association – and the CIC will be beavering away in the background dealing with planning permissions, listed building consents and of course, the small matter of raising five million pounds. When the CIC achieves preferred bidder status and secures the required funding we will take ownership of the site and it will close immediately for an extensive building programme which is likely to last for at least 18 months. We are now looking for a new director of the CIC (this is a voluntary position) to help us with our cashflow planning and financial forecasts. Most likely this will be an accountant or financial director who will have a few hours a week available for the next year. Please do get in touch if you are interested. We are also looking for people to join our fundraising team. We have a number of projects on the go – but of course if you don’t want to commit to this then please do feel free to organise your own fundraiser! Our team will of course be working on the now annual fun day. It was quite a surprise to again win the Argus Achievement Award for Best Community Event in 2013! We are so grateful to all our sponsors and volunteers who helped to put on such a wonderful day. The provisional date for the Fun Day 2014 is the weekend of Friday 6 and Saturday 7 June 2014 so please put it in your diary. WHEN TAX EVASION MEANT THE GALLOWS Tax dodging was such a problem for revenue collectors in the Georgian era that it incurred increasingly severe penalties, enough to make any modern accountant blanche if not faint clean away. In those days, 'armed smuggling' or 'shooting at a revenue officer' were hangable offences. Unlike today, organised gangs furtively collected their duty free goods at night on secluded beaches. Fiercely protective of their interests, it was not unknown for these renegades to resort to murder if anyone threatened their lucrative livelihood. Coastguards, excise men and suspected informants were all at risk. There was too much at stake and a coarse rope around your neck (execution was by strangulation) or transportation to the colonies, was hardly an appealing retirement plan.
The self-funded group, which boasts 300 extrovert members, is now going a step further by offering authentic 'period contraband' in a smuggler themed hunt around their atmospheric streets. Hunters pay for a scroll of hints, if they can piece together a random series of clues, it will reveal the location of tokens, each representing a typical smuggled cargo 'hoard'. Prizes include eight pieces of silver (get it?), brandy and pirate rum.
This perilous but highly profitable trade, is celebrated annually by coastal heritage group Rottingdean Smugglers. Each December, roads are closed and for one fiery night, organised mayhem descends on their village. Torchlit processions, pirate drummers, fireworks and elaborate costumes, attract thousands of spectators.
