The dog ate the article ....and other true tales

As I walked the seven minute walk across the factory floor, men were tapping their watches at me.

After spending three days researching and drafting an essay on 5G mobiles, I went out, my partner fell asleep and the Puppy turned the essay into 1 cm pieces. After trying to rebuild it all I realised the missing bits were in the dog...

As I crashed through into the main office the Works Director came out of his office to challenge me. I apologised for being late but said I’d had a problem with pancakes. The previous night was Shrove Tuesday and my friends had put two lemon pancakes on my windscreen. A small flurry of snow had buried them from view. When I tried to shift the snow with the wipers it had mixed with the washer liquid to create a greasy mixture than then froze. My landlady and I had to pour bowls of hot washing up liquid to dissolve the opaque film. The Office fell silent, after a pregnant pause I was told not to let it happen again....

As I have not time to research it all again, here is an column about true excuses I have used for being late. I was pulled up for arriving at 9:07am on a Monday morning. I had to stop to let three families of ducks with their young offspring across the road. A month later I managed to accidentally be the 27�� vehicle in a 67 vehicle convoy. I was in the middle of a travelling funfair. With many lorries towing a similar sized trailer AND a Romany caravan, I was there for 15 miles... The most serious incident happened in March 2015 when I was on a 12 month Industrial experience in a factory straight out of an Ealing Comedy, I was late, In factories everyone has to be on time.

Spotlight on Shore Escape Mobile Today I had the pleasure of having a manicure from Carly Whitaker of Shore Escape Mobile, whose ethos is “Beauty Therapy & Well-being.” I love having Carly come to my house to do treatments. I don’t have to worry about travel, being late and parking. My treatment this time was an Indulge Manicure. Carly worked hard cleansing, filing and shaping my nails and working on my cuticles. It is best to have your cuticles worked on by a professional because if you don’t know what you are doing they can get damaged and this affects the growth and strength of the nails. Carly then applied a beautiful hand scrub which contained gentle oils that when rinsed off, stayed on the skin leaving them silky soft. (A few days later when I applied a moisturising cream a lot of dead skin came off and the hands still felt lovely). My hands were treated to a proper beauty hand massage when finally a polish of my choice was applied to the nails. Carly has lots of colours to choose from, something to match any outfit or occasion or just a colour for an everyday look; this is always applied with a good quality base coat to protect the nails and top coat to protect the polish and keep it long lasting. All the products Carly uses are very high quality and natural, but if you do have skin issues all treatments can be adapted. Just speak with Carly, she is very knowledgeable. My treatment took just over an hour and cost £22.00. If I apply my own polish it never lasts more than a day or two and never looks anything like Carly can achieve. So with that done and a feeling of total relaxation and well-being Carly left quickly, with no mess left behind leaving me to carry on my day. Right from the off, the visitors showed they meant business when Alieu Secka in the home goal was forced into an excellent save. Glebe had clearly decided they wanted to make a quick start and with eight minutes played were 1-0 up. But just four minutes later Haven were level when Cam Wiltshire scored with a lob. On 16 minutes Jake Le Grange met a Marshall corner with a thumping header which was cleared off the line. And two minutes later Marshall went close. But then on 22 minutes against the run of play Glebe retook the lead.

Haven laid siege on the Glebe goal but it wasn’t to be. In the 93�� minute former AFC Wimbledon player Stacey Long took advantage of Peacehaven’s pressing to make it 5-3 for Glebe and game over. Peacehaven Horticultural Society Peacehaven Horticultural Society are one of the longest running charities in Peacehaven…

We are a friendly bunch who meet every third Monday of the month in the Anzac Room, Meridian Centre, Peacehaven at 7:00 pm for 7:30 pm. We have a variety of talks during the year 2020 including vegetable growing, container gardening, seasonal planting & plant sales along with a quiz, and fish & chip night. Why not pop along and see us, you will receive your first meeting free! If you are already a member why not bring a friend who will get their first meeting free. Membership is £6 per person and £10 a couple. Entrance to the Monday meeting is £2 which includes refreshments.

Seaford Choral Society The next Seaford Choral Society concert we will be opening with the exciting Magnificat by John Rutter.

First performed in 1990, this exuberant and joyous work, inspired by Bach and others is a more modern take on the traditional sacred music dedicated to Mary, Mother of Jesus. The choir are thoroughly enjoying working on this new addition to our repertoire under the able guidance of musical director Colin Hughes and looking forward to the solo performance by newcomer mezzo soprano Bethany Geoghegan. The second half of the concert will feature a range of favourite pieces by Fauré, César Frank, Mozart, Bruckner, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Lassus and our very own Seaford composer Chris Whitelaw. Peacehaven WI - Afternoon The WI was started in 1923 and there are some members who have been coming for over 46 years. We would love to invite new members, you are assured a very warm welcome. The president then told us how much she enjoyed the East Sussex Federation’s Century garden party in Hastings that she had attended in on our behalf. Martlets Earthworks Bereavement Allotment Group for Men First 12 week Open Access Course starting the week of 4�� November 2019 Earthworks is a space for bereaved men to meet and get together to grow, harvest, tend and maintain Martlets new allotment. Throughout the year Martlets will be offering sessions on mornings, afternoons, evenings and on a Saturday.

Sharing experiences of loss while working with the natural cycle of life through the seasons can be a positive and healing experience.

Previous gardening experience is not required and attendees are free to take on whatever jobs interest them, be it lighter work pricking out seedlings or getting stuck into digging and clearing. The Earthworks course will run for 12 weeks and is ‘Open Access’ meaning that any bereaved man in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas is welcome to attend, you do not have to have a previous connection with Martlets The Earthworks counsellor will provide a welcoming and supportive environment in which to work and the session starts with a cuppa in the allotment shed around the wood burner.

(Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgefordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Best Bites: MUSICIAN'S ISSUES - FACING THE MUSIC Playing music is usually a much beloved hobby or profession. It takes many years of study to become proficient or begin to master an instrument, often requiring long hours of dedicated practice. Unless you are playing as a requirement of your parents or school system, you are unlikely to choose to invest the time and effort that is required unless it is a labour of love. Physical problems can arise from playing musical instruments, depending on the instrument, your body posture while playing and the amount of time spent playing. Many of the physical problems encountered by musicians relate to lifting and carrying large and heavy equipment, often in awkward spaces and also when cold and/or tired. Other common problems relate to repetitive strain, overplaying, poor posture, poor technique and some instruments simply require an awkward position. Neck and Upper Back: Awkward positions in the neck are required in playing the flute and violin. Holding a heavy guitar on a strap for a long time while playing can create problems in the neck, where the nerves can be squeezed and radiate pain down the arm and wrist. Classical guitarists use a foot stand and hold the guitar in a particular way for a reason! Hanging a saxophone or other instrument off the neck can also create problems, there are more supportive back straps that can help alleviate this problem. I can only imagine how a French horn feels. Long hours of piano and keyboard playing can also stress the upper back and neck unless postural correction is applied. Intense drumming or leaning in towards a cello, harp, double bass or hand drum, etc. can also stress this area. Lower Back: This is mostly affected by lifting, though can also be affected by holding an instrument, particularly if it is for a long time or if your posture is less optimal, also if you are in an awkward position! Legs, Hips, Knees, Ankles, Feet: Affected by long hours of standing, dancing, pedalling of harp, organ and base drum, etc. Arms, Shoulders, Elbows, Wrists, Hands: Playing all forms of instruments that use sticks or bows, as well as strumming and plucking strings can affect the wrists and hands if the position is awkward or forced, the grip is too tight and also if there is repetitive strain. The hand position can be affected by the arm position, neck and upper back and vice versa. Wrist and hand strain can occur from incorrect technique at the keyboards.

Of course there can also be the emotional issues of being apart from loved ones, particularly if you have a young family. Being young, free and single can have its benefits when touring! Dealing with fans can be great, though also has its stresses. TIPS: Be fit for your instrument! Don't wait until you have a problem. Back, Neck and Shoulders: It is important to learn correct lifting technique to keep the back strong and also how to use your upper back muscles around the shoulder blade to have better strength and control in your arm and prevent the tension going to the low back, the neck or the arm from holding a heavy instrument. Good core strength is crucial for a healthy low back and in fact for the whole body biomechanics. Learn to stretch well. Elbows, Forearms, Wrists and Hands: There are some good stretching exercises for forearms, wrists and hands to release tension and also build strength. Avoid gripping your instrument, bow or stick too tightly, learn techniques that encourage relaxed interaction with the instrument while playing. Hips, Knees, Ankles and Feet: Strength and flexibility are important for keeping your body in good shape to play. Learn to stretch hip flexors, hamstrings, butt muscles, calves, feet and ankles. Keep the thighs strong and avoid twisting the knee suddenly or repeatedly when lifting. Voice: Affected by over strain, incorrect training, from not warming up correctly or the bugs that you meet on planes, trains and automobiles! Ears: Are often affected long term by over exposure to noise. Gigging, fun though it is can mean heavy lifting, late nights, perhaps over indulgence and dehydration and even some stress. Dehydration affects the muscles (we are at least 70% water!) and particularly the lower back as the kidneys sit on a large core muscle called the Psoas (so-as), which can also be strained by incorrect lifting. It's all connected when it comes to the body. Touring has its own issues such as sleeping in different and perhaps uncomfortable beds, jet lag if you are touring long haul, dehydration and eating unsuitable food. The Green Centre Community Interest Company The Green Centre is a Peacehaven based environmental community interest company, which has been running now for 13 years and are actively looking for helpers… The centre started with a pasting table set up out of the back of a car in George Street Hove, and other B&H locations. We expounded simple messages to passers-by about how they could make their own contribution to improving the environment for us all. We were well received and established a good reputation for giving easy to understand answers to many of the obvious questions about re-use and recycling. We had no real home and our materials and literature were kept in front rooms and on shelves in various locations around the City. We grew slowly and acquired more chattels and whilst looking around for a more contained space from which to operate, we found our first stable base at Manor Hill, Brighton. The Centre thrived in its new location and was able to implement workshops both at the centre and around the City, covering a broad spectrum of environmental issues. We set up our website and added some of the key advisory features that have helped to grow our reputation as the go-to source for 1000’s of topical environmental questions. The Green Centre has always been supported by pure volunteers and that band of helpers has grown over the years to include people with learning difficulties and other mental health issues, some with disabilities, many able-bodied students, retired people and everything in between.

In 2017 we established a regular attendance at Brighton Open Market where we continue to offer our information and advice on what has now become “The One-Planet” curriculum. We have a roster of regular volunteers who set up at the Market every Thursday morning from 8 am and take it all down again at 5 pm. Our ambition was always to take our projects properly mobile and in March 2017 we acquired a double decker bus. This gave us the additional requirement of finding somewhere to park it so that we could set about converting it into a usable educational space. Later in 2017, B&H Buses donated a Transit van so that we could now support the bus and the market with a sensible vehicle, rather than using our private cars. The van was fully racked out and contains modules to support the market and workshops that we operate around the City from time to time. We continue the conversion of our bus to an educational space, using reclaimed or donated materials. More recently, we have moved into a small cabin and two containers at the Farrington Storage Depot in Hoyle Road, Peacehaven. We are completely volunteer based and are actively looking for helpers in Peacehaven on Tuesdays and some Thursdays, and at the Brighton Open Market on Thursdays. A Traditional Christmas Celebration At Telscombe Village Sunday December 22ⁿ� 2019 Every year Telscombe Village welcomes the Christmas season with a traditional carol concert in our beautiful & atmospheric candle-lit 12�� century church of St Laurence. Along with well known carols accompanied by our Victorian organ, we have an impromptu Nativity play in which members from the congregation of all ages are invited to join in. No acting experience is needed just bags of enthusiasm. Costumes, props and animal masks are all provided. Sometimes we follow the plot if the narrator remembers her glasses; sometimes it gets a bit creative especially when the stage manager gets her prompt cards muddled up and the vicar suddenly decides he doesn't want to be the cow any more and starts barking in all the wrong places! Parts for Mary & Joseph, angels, shepherds, donkeys, pigs, sheep and a cat called Sybbie are all available. The Vicar of Dibley has nothing on us. Come along and channel your inner thespian!

Enjoy Christmas as we all remember it as children in a lovely rural setting. Loads of parking in the farmyard opposite the church. Bring a torch! Telscombe Village Carol Concert starts at 3:00 pm and the Family party starts at 4:00 pm.

Then afterwards, we all head to the nearby Village Club to enjoy a Family Christmas party where Father Christmas and a sackful of presents always makes an appearance. Enjoy a roaring log fire, home baked cakes, mulled wine, tea, coffee & soft drinks along with a seasonal raffle.
