Is the iPhone invincible? ....or can the new kid on the block challenge Apple? Throughout the first half of the 2000's Nokia dominated with a range of original innovative mobile phones. In late 2007 the first iPhone was released, the decline began. The iPhone was initially seen as a niche product for poseurs, but with successive updates it became a greater threat until Nokia was rescued from extinction by Microsoft in September 2013. Both brands suffered at the rise of the Android Smartphones, most notably from HTC, Samsung and Sony. In recent years HTC has fallen to the wayside. The Samsung Galaxy S series has chewed away at iPhone market share. The Sony Xperia Z series has been the latest pretender. The Amazon Fire Phone maybe the phone that topples the iPhone. The specification of the Fire and the iPhone are fairly similar. Amazon understands that a modern phone spends only a small part of its time making telephone calls. The emphasis with the Fire is movies, TV and books. Virtually every CD and MP3 you have ever purchased from Amazon is available to stream online. Any kindle books are downloaded. A raft of movies and TV series can viewed. To unlock these media features Amazon Prime is needed but a year's membership is currently bundled with the phone. Maybe the iPhone has met a true rival at last......

New Beauty Salon Business Venture I was invited along to a new home business venture in Peacehaven this month. An amazing facial later and I was one happy lady… I feel it is always a pleasure and a privilege to be invited to sample the delights of any kind of therapy, be it healing or beauty. When I found out it was Carly Whitaker, (formerly of ‘The Beauty Bar’ in Denton) I was very pleased as I know from previous dealings with her that she is a beauty therapist with a difference. Her Salon is in a Beach Hut in her garden. It is small but private, beautifully decorated with a nautical theme and warm. Carly has over 12 years experience of beauty therapy and is fully qualified, insured and trained in a number of high profile products. I chose the Deluxe facial that is part of the ‘Push the boat out package.’ Carly uses the gentlest treatments with no nasty chemicals, they also don’t have a heavy scent so you can be sure that they are au naturale. My skin was deep cleansed, toned, exfoliated and a mask was applied that was not tight or uncomfortable. She removed the mask with warm mits so there was no residue. I was also given a face and scalp massage, this was very gentle but effective and moisturiser was applied to finish. I don’t think I have ever really felt such a benefit from a facial as I did that day. My body really detoxed and after I felt tired but it did not last long and my skin felt so soft and glowed for many days after.

THE Magpies have battled their way through the first two hectic months of the season and sit just below half way in the Ryman Premier League. Manager Shaun Saunders says: “There are no easy games in this league. We’re working hard and playing at this level is new to all of us. Stand up for Leisha Campaign

STAND UP FOR LEISHA

Leisha is a 13 year old child with Cerebral Palsy who lives in Telscombe Cliffs, she needs a new wheelchair to help her become more independent at school and home, the Etac 800 power chair will give Leisha a new lease of life, and she will be able to interact more with her school friends. She has now grown out of her present junior chair and needs the new one now!!! As The Mayor of Telscombe I’ve chosen ‘STAND UP FOR LEISHA’ as my charity and I’m holding a series of fundraising events throughout his mayoral year to raise the needed funds for this cause. All the monies raised will go towards the purchase of the new £21k Etac 800 series power chair any money donated over the purchase price will be placed into a trust account, to cover servicing and repairs of the power chair in the future. I started off the fundraising with a Gala dinner held at the civic centre and cooked a 2 course meal for 60 people raising the first £1,000. Followed by a Crowd Funding page with a month of campaigning brought the total to £8,600 Leisha is an outgoing child held back by a disability, she has an ambition to become a teacher in the future. The power chair will allow her to interact with other people at their level as the chair can be used in a standing position; Leisha will be more independent being able to carry out those tasks we take for granted (hanging up her coat on her peg, picking the dropped pen from the floor). Leisha deserves the chance to enjoy life to the full and this chair will help that.

Future events: - Boxathon, A Onesie Day and cake sale at PCS School, Quiz night at the Good Companions, The Telscombe Mayoress evening Dolly Parton and Dusty Springfield tribute band. We hope to have completed the full amount by Christmas at the latest, with partnerships and kind hearted people the goal should be met sooner. We will keep you up to date with the running total through the Facebook page ‘Stand up for Leisha’ and all the local fundraising events that will be taking place, once the full amount has been achieved you can attend the delivery of the chair if you so wish, PLEASE Donate to help this child, Cheques can be made out to the Mayor of Telscombe and taken to the Telscombe Civic Centre, Cash can be places in various collection boxes over Telscombe and Peace haven Thank you once again for the continued support, as a community we will reach the goal, reach the wish of Leisha, to stand at the level of her friends and become independent!!! On the 6�� of September around 100 people attended a sponsored charity walk, from Seaford to Telscombe Tye, raising approximately £2,500 as we are still waiting for sponsorships to be handed in. A fantastic day was had by all and the pain from our sore feet was soon forgotten as we all watched a Free Firework Display put on by Telscombe Town Council to end the evening. Charity buckets on the gate took a few more donations and now we estimate our total to be around £14,000 Our fantastic community are now working together putting on fundraising events and local businesses have placed charity buckets to help reach the goal, a huge thank you to everyone who has helped raise the money so far, the list is endless and grows daily.

LOCAL CHARITY TARGETED BY THIEVES On Tuesday 8�� September the Community Transport charity CTLA Lewes branch was targeted by thieves who stole an exhaust System and a catalytic converter putting two vehicles out of action and leaving staff and volunteers devastated… Since this unfortunate incident the CTLA has received support from groups and individuals. Donations were received from individuals through the localgiving online site of just over £100 with another £100 donation received from the Director of Northstar Technology Ltd, Christian Fleming, who said : “While meeting at Peacehaven Chamber of Commerce this week, we heard the awful news about the break in that CTLA suffered and the loss they incurred. We hope our donation will help close the unexpected funding hole in the CTLA finances, and keep this vital community service running.” Administration Assistant Marilyn Nolan, held a cake sale at SCDA Nursery on Denton Island raising £25 and the ladies from the Hillcrest Centre 'Knit and Natter' group held a collection at their weekly meeting and donated £13. Roys Liquor Store, South Coast Road, Peacehaven have a collection tin on the counter for customers to make a donation and the Body Shop Foundation in Littlehampton have sent a box of products to help raise funds through a raffle. Community Manager Paula Woolven thanked everyone for their kindness saying : "Some of our faith in human nature has been restored thanks to the wonderful people who have contacted us with messages of support and donations." Problems with the Prostate and the PSA test 1 in every 2 men will have a health problem with their prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an infection, enlargement or cancer. 1 in every 8 men will develop prostate cancer and those of African-Caribbean origin and those with a family history of the disease are 2 to 3 times more at risk. PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, it is a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate, entering the blood. It is not a direct test for cancer, a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. Some leading clinicians believe all men over 50 should know their PSA and have regular yearly tests. Swedish researchers say PSA testing every man aged 45 – 49 would predict nearly half of all prostate cancer deaths. Without screening, around 42,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. It is now the leading cancer found in men. Almost 11,000 men die of this disease annually, one every 48 minutes. Caught in the early stages, cure rates are dramatically improved with over 80% success. General symptoms of problems with the prostate are frequent need to urinate especially at night; bursting to urinate, slow flow, difficult, painful; stop/start and dribbling, or blood in the urine.

FREE PSA testing is happening in Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex, the three counties covered by the charity PCaSO (Prostate Cancer Support Organisation). We believe overwhelmingly in giving men the right to decision making about their own health choices. We are continuing with our commitment to a PSA testing programme and have tested over 1000 men across our region so far this year. ARTWAVE 2014 What an incredible 3 weeks of the recent Artwave Open House Festival which finished on 7th Sept… Geoff Stonebanks & Mark Glassman would like to say thank you so much to all the 965 visitors who came to see the stunning 16 artists work set against the beautiful canvas of Geoff's award winning garden in Bishopstone! Whilst their numbers are a little down on the 1042 people seen in 2013, their spending power was significantly increased. Over the period of the festival they sold an incredible £10,042 worth of art, ranging in price from just £5 up to their top selling piece at £1200. This was an average of £10 per visitor. Geoff commented that; "this is staggering when you compare to previous years sales and is virtually double what we did in 2013. Interestingly, just under half those sales were made by credit card. The majority of the sales however were for items priced between just £10 and £50 and it was the volume that allowed us to hit our incredible record!"

He went on to say: "our busiest days by far were Saturday 23rd August and Saturday 6th September, which is most unusual as in previous years Sundays have tended to be the busy days! 63% of our sales were on these 2 days!" They sold an amazing £1000 worth of home made tea and cakes served in the garden on trays in vintage china. Proceeds from these went to Macmillan Cancer Support who Geoff is a registered fundraiser for. He has been raising money for them all summer. Visitors were very generous and donated £540 during Artwave and spent £870 on raffle tickets. A further 300 tickets were sold during the summer, at the National Gardens Scheme openings too. 9 artists had generously donated pieces of their work and the top 3 prizes were a ceramic vessel priced at £130, given by Chiara Vagnarelli, a carved soapstone cat by Paul Haughney (£50) and framed print by Mark Glassman (£35). The draw was made by Rob Moon, Regional Fundraising Manager for the charity, at 4pm in the garden on Sunday 7th. Winners were notified by telephone, 2 ( Lauren and Colin) were lucky enough to be in the garden when the draw was made! Throughout the summer Driftwood has been raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and Geoff Stonebanks, garden owner, and Chairman of the Driftwood Fundraising Group (which raises money for the charity through the Macmillan Garden Trail and other events in his garden, was able to present Rob Moon with a cheque for £10,000 which will go towards the building of the new cancer centre in Brighton. Geoff said “I want to thank most sincerely, not only the visitors who came to the garden and helped us reach this target, but the artists who donated prizes for the raffle, the 31 garden owners who opened up their gardens back in July for the trail and the many volunteers who selflessly helped out at all the evens both at Driftwood and elsewhere! Without them the achievement of the £10,000 would not have been possible!”

��, apart from being made famous due to the adverts of a certain company, are squirrel sized mongooses from the Southern African plains. They work together to survive predators and hunt for food. They survive by burrowing underground. These burrows can be quite extensive and they move from one to the other. The tunnels are cool and away from the African sun. Mothers, Fathers and siblings help to raise the meerkat young. Meerkats will eat insects, lizards, birds, and fruit. When hunting small game, they work together and communicate with purring sounds. Meerkats are good hunters and are sometimes tamed for use as rodent-catchers.

Preparations for Christmas begin early at St Margaret’s St Margaret’s Church, Rottingdean is preparing for its first ever Christmas Tree Festival on the weekend of Friday to Sunday 5, 6 & 7th December 2014. St Margaret’s Church, Rottingdean is preparing for its first ever Christmas Tree Festival on the weekend of Friday to Sunday 5, 6 & 7th December 2014. Friday 11am to 8pm, Saturday 10am to 9pm, Sunday 12 noon to 5.30pm. Refreshments will be available during the festival. Admission £3 including brochure. Children free if accompanied by an adult. Father Martin, Vicar of St Margaret’s said “We have always celebrated Christmas at St Margaret’s and decorated the Church. This year we wanted to support the Martlets Hospice, a worthy local cause.’ In the Church, there will be around 40 decorated trees; which will be enchanting and magical. Some trees will be traditional, others more modern – some glitzy, some will make you smile, some colourful, and unusual. Each will be amazing in their own way, to make this an entertaining family event in the run up to Christmas. Christmas Tree Festivals have become very popular in many villages, towns and cities in recent years. This festival is being organised by parishioner Duncan Ward who said “We are involving local school children, individuals, groups, organisations, and businesses. Entries for decorated trees are being accepted, please see our website www.stmargaret.org.uk for details.” The Festival will be open to the public from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 December 2014, at the Church on the Green, Rottingdean. There will be an entry fee with all proceeds going to The Martlets Hospice. Refreshments will be available during the Festival in St Margaret’s Cottage. The Festival will round off with a ‘Christmas Singalong’ amongst the trees on Sunday 7 December at 6pm.
