Welcome Page Welcome to the October 2018 edition of the Peacehaven Directory Our front cover has been provided by Colette Langton of ‘Colette Langton Photography’ Colette got inspired one evening watching the clouds perform, she thought they were so dramatic and mesmerising. Halloween is upon us at the end of this month, there is an organised event put on by the Telscombe Civic Centre for families to enjoy, you can see this on page 40. Although our children are now grown up we always followed the rules when ‘Trick or treating’ of only going to those houses that displayed pumpkins or other stuff that let you know they were happy for you to come calling. It just allows the older or more vulnerable residents to be left alone if they so wish. Peacehaven is slowly warming up for the Christmas period and event information is already starting to appear. I always get a little excited feeling when I see this. If you are groaning at the thought, then feel free to just look at the information for October. Take care and we will be back next month… Anne Briffett - Editor November edition deadline is: 15 October 2018 Call: 01273 586527 E:info@peacehavendirectory.co.uk www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk

ean Views The touchy subject of touchscreen PCs? ... a tale of disappointment
LOCAL BUSINESS
By Bruce Cameron-Stuart
I bought a basic Windows 8 laptop to familiarise myself with the OS. It had a painfully slow touchscreen, allied with the budget processor making the machine almost unusable. It has passed round our household as each person kindly gifts it to someone else (the dog is next in line).
Around 15 years ago a colleague with dyslexia brought his state of the art Windows XP Tablet to work. The touchscreen could only function with a special stylus. The concept was alluring but the reality was rather dire. I I was recently asked to provide a touchscreen Windows was not impressed. 10 based system. After my previous experience I was With Microsoft fearing for its existence it introduced the reluctant to link a touchscreen to anything less than an woeful Windows 8 operating system. While some of the i3 NUC with 8GB of RAM and a SSD. After twinning with a mid-range Iiyama we ended up with a system that is specialist press adored it, the rest of us were unimpressed. The developers made a huge assumption: quick, fun and intuitive. After 15 years of waiting, I finally want one! customers would upgrade to touchscreen monitors to get the benefits from the new version of Windows. They did not. Touchscreen PC systems were pretty rare, the only place you might have seen one was on the All-in-one systems (usually mated to chronically underpowered CPUs to make them affordable). The other option was a laptop with a touchscreen.

27 depression, anger management, loss, dementia and autism. I have been a counsellor both at a college working with young people and a charity supporting unpaid Carers. Before counselling, I had a background in business and management and I believe that helps in understanding some of the pressures clients face in their busy lives. I provide a gentle, empathic and non-judgemental space for you to explore and make the changes you want to. I’m happy to support both adults and young people for short and longer term therapy.
Welcome to Seahaven Counselling and Hypnotherapy. With our practice getting bigger I’d like to introduce you to the rest of the team. Between us we are now able to provide appointments from Monday to Friday, day and evening. Lyn Hayward (Dip. Counselling), MBACP (Accred), MNCS (Snr. Accred), UKATA) I am a qualified Counsellor and a trained Bereavement Volunteer operating my own private practice in Berwick as well as at Seahaven Counselling in Newhaven with Fleur. I’ve worked in a busy medical practice for some years and have found that many issues brought to counselling involve loss of some kind, which usually involves the client feeling anxious. This can come in many forms, it can involve losing a friendship, a family pet, bereavement, a job, good health, a relationship, control of eating/drinking, self esteem and confidence. I believe that in building a strong and trusting relationship with my clients it enables them to feel safe and supported whilst discussing and exploring the issues they have chosen to bring to the counselling room. I look forward to working with you. Audrey Hodgkins (Dip. Counselling, UKATA, NCS) BA (hons) European Studies I am a fully qualified counsellor and have worked with a wide range of clients seeking support with anxiety,

Louise Tull (Bsc. Hons Human Nutrition and Dietetics, UKATA NCS MBACP, HCP) I’m a trainee counsellor and have concluded four years of training to become a qualified Psychotherapist and Counsellor in Transactional Analysis with the aim of completing my qualification in 2018/2019. During this time I have been providing counselling to clients across Brighton, Hove and Eastbourne with a wide range of issues, including relationship challenges, loss, loneliness, loss of independence and ability, depression and anxiety. I have also seen clients with food related issues. I’m also a registered Dietitian and have worked in various NHS Trusts since 2007. In this role, I have found that food is often used as a way of suppressing or controlling emotions, which can lead to unhealthy eating patterns, addiction and ways of dealing with painful life events, such as bereavement, abuse and low self-esteem to name a few. Building and maintaining a kind, caring and empathic therapeutic relationship is of utmost importance to me. Ensuring clients have the space to be able to discuss what challenges they are facing and consider what changes they can make means that I work in a way that maintains confidentiality is empathetic, non-judgemental and supportive. If you like to find out more please take a look at our web site: www.seahaventherapy.co.uk, email seahaventherapy@hotmail.com or make contact by phone 07708 897308. We look forward to welcoming you. Tireless hospice volunteer wins charity lottery A Martlets volunteer who has been tirelessly working for the charity for more than twenty years has won the hospice’s Lottery jackpot of £1,500. Val Persaud has worked in several of the hospice’s charity shops and has, for the last sixteen years, been helping out behind the scenes in its warehouse with the important task of sorting up clothes that have been donated. She said, “I love volunteering, it’s something I’ve always done because it keeps me busy and active. I’m here three times a week and it takes me an hour to get here, on two different buses, so I must really enjoy it! “I’ve been playing the hospice’s Lottery for a very long time, so I really got a shock when they rang and told me that I’d won. I thought someone was having a joke to start with, it took me a while to come to terms with it. It was only when I received the cheque that it became real. “I hadn’t been doing the Lottery with the intention of winning, I played it because Martlets is such a good cause; I really didn’t expect to get anything back. “I’m planning on using the money to get some new windows, because my old ones are leaking and letting in the damp.
NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY while you wait service Tuesday - Saturday see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or
Then I’m going to take ten of my friends from Martlets out for a lovely meal at Donatello's.” You can play the Martlets’ Lottery for as little as £2 a week with a chance of winning the top prize of £1,500. The winners’ numbers are drawn by computer each Friday and are published the following Monday in the Argus and on the Martlets’ website. Sign up online at www.themartlets.org.uk/join-our-lottery or contact Sheila Green on 01273 747455 for more details. Please note: to play the Martlets’ Lottery you MUST be at least 16 years of age and resident in England, Scotland or Wales. www.themartlets.org.uk

50 Local Information & Events Dick Whittington lived! Sir Richard Whittington, unlike other pantomime stalwarts, really did exist. However it’s unlikely that anyone actually called him Dick once he became Lord Mayor of London. He did come up to town from Gloucester, where he was born in 1354, to seek his fortune. As the third son to a wealthy family he had no prospect of an inheritance. When his father died young Dick needed to find a job. It is unlikely he had to walk all the way with his belongings in sack over his shoulder. An apprenticeship to the merchant Ivo Fitzwarren was arranged. He proved to be a successful merchant, a “mercer”, importing luxury fabrics and exporting English woollen cloth. He made a lot of money and then increased his wealth further by loaning vast sums to three Kings, Richard II and Henrys IV and V as well as other nobles. They needed lots of money and he knew how to set the rate of interest in his favour. He did marry Alice Fitzwarren who was the daughter of his former boss but it was hardly a whirlwind romance. He was 48 when they married in 1402. She was 24. Unfortunately she died only 9 years later and they did not have any children. He was buried next to her when he also passed away. He died in 1423 at the age of 69 in his beloved London having been Mayor 4 times. The King first appointed him in June 1397 when the incumbent died but was subsequently elected by the citizens of London on three occasions. During his life he was a public benefactor. He paid for the installation of sewers in some poor districts of the capital and had a hospital ward set up for unmarried mothers. He also financed the building of public drinking fountains across the city. As he had no heirs he left his fortune to charity and the Sir Richard Whittington Trust continues to do good work to this day. The story we know today first appeared some two hundred years later at the time of Elizabeth I. This is the first mention of any cat. One piece of good news is that London was not so overrun by rats that a supercat was needed to rescue it. The bad news is that there is no record of Sir Dick ever owning any sort of cat. Dick Whittington is this year’s panto from the Peacehaven Players. Details can be found on their Facebook page or website www.peacehavenplayers.co.uk.

Local Information & Events Community Voice… Seagulls have being getting a lot of bad press recently mostly from people who, I suspect, do not live alongside these birds. Opinions I totally reject.
I have even seen them floating stationary in the wind, then backwards again never once using their wings, just floating; true suspended animation.
Yes I appreciate Seagulls can sometimes be a nuisance and cause problems, but then so can humans, who drops more litter?, not Seagulls. If we can put a man on the moon surely it is not beyond us to design a gull proof waste bin. But the pleasure I get watching them outweighs their indiscretions.
Most evening, depending on the weather, I see them flock up from the
Seagulls are magnificent creatures, especially when seen close up. They are devoted parents and highly intelligent: Look how they have trained humans to provide their food, how they know where the best restaurants are e.g. McDonalds. No supermarket check out queues for them, as well as being able to perform the most intricate aerobatic manoeuvres.
beach where they have spent time resting and feeding and then begins their " happy hour" flying display. Showing off, performing all their flying skills all at high speed but never once colliding with each other, thoroughly having fun and enjoying themselves. It is akin to the " Starlings Murmur " which people rave about, but ten times better. By: John Armstrong
Perhaps I am fortunate that I live on the cliff top and can watch these birds perform in their true environment, the Coast. Here they can be Seagulls. Here they can glide, wings extended, like miniature airliners. Then they will swoop, soar, dive, twist and turn, they even "play tag" all without once flapping their wings, just using the wind and the thermals.

Cycle Seahaven It's been an amazing Summer for Cycle Seahaven this year. The fantastic weather we have had has seen us have a record number of rides - over 250 since the beginning of April, including both on and off road rides, Family rides and Ladies only rides. We have also seen people getting back on their bikes or starting to ride with our Public Health Rides. These are available to non members and are a great way of starting out. More information can be found on our website and our calendar. Eighteen of our ladies, from beginners to tri-athletes, recently enjoyed a gentle ride to Follers Manor and enjoyed visiting the gardens and having tea and cake before cycling back home. The kids also celebrated the last day of the holidays with a ride along the Seafront and onto the Bird Hide on the Ouse Estuary Trail before heading back for a picnic in the park. Some other highlights we have had this Summer include assisting with the Launch of the Cycle Hub in Peacehaven, a 3 day and a 2 day ride over the South Downs Way - 100 miles of stunning scenery. Supporting Newhaven SCDA with their Open Day as well as the introduction of our Health Rides in conjunction with South Downs National Park. Our Dr Bike sessions at Seaford and Peacehaven have also been a great success, with 138 bikes fixed to date and £426 raised for our nominated charity, Cycling Without Age and their purchase of a Tri-Shaw to get local residents out and about in the fresh air. Our Dr Bike sessions run from April to October in Seaford (on the first Saturday of the month) and Peacehaven (third Saturday of the month) but don't put your bike away for the winter - come and join us on some rides as we will continue to ride throughout the year. Still to come this year - our Tourers are switching their road bikes for mountain bikes and going off road! Can't wait to hear about it!! We also have a Family Treasure Hunt and our annual Halloween Fancy Dress Ride as well as a 2 day intensive Outdoor First Aid course which is discounted for members and great fun. New members joining in October, November and December will benefit from free membership until renewal on 1st January, so what's stopping you? You can come along for 3 rides before needing to join, or come along to any of our Public Health rides (just register beforehand). There are benefits to joining, including discounts at Mr Cycles and other local businesses and more details can be found on our website. Haven't got a bike? No problem, we have a few that are available to borrow, including e-bikes. Membership starts at £7 per year for single membership or £14 for household membership. Article (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips - Gardening Injuries
At this time of year the gardeners amongst you are probably busy preparing your gardens for the autumn and winter months. If you are doing this frantically and under time pressure you may be a risk of injuring or straining your body. Each task in the garden can risk affecting various parts of your body if you are not mindful of how you use it; and you may not notice until the next day when the strain makes itself known. If the injury is obvious like cutting yourself badly, then you need to call 999! LOW BACK Digging: Good posture is crucial with all tasks, and especially with digging; many of you are digging your vegetable patches currently. Digging with a poor posture, too hunched over, for too long or with loads that are too heavy can put strain on the low back. This area is particularly at risk if you are digging up a heavy load, then twisting to place it elsewhere, especially when doing this repeatedly for an extended time. Weeding and Pulling: Wrestling with those thick roots and having added determination to get them out and particularly in a time frame, e.g. before dark, can place undue strain on your low back; it is usually the one that you don’t want to get away that puts the strain in your back.

Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail Results The 7th annual Macmillan Coastal garden Trail took place over the weekend of the 28th and 29th July. After the amazing heatwave in recent weeks it all fell apart, weather-wise, on the Saturday morning and all day Sunday with rain and high winds doing a lot of damage to the beautifully tended gardens on the trail! However, the sun shone from opening time at 11am on the Saturday for the rest of the day and then the rain set in again for Sunday. TV Celebrity, Jim Buttress, was on hand to cut the ribbon at trail organsier, Geoff Stonebanks's garden, Driftwood in Bishopstone. To assist there was Joelle Leader, Director of Volunteering at Macmillan Cancer Support, Cllr Linda Wallraven, Mayor of Seaford with her Consort, Liz Holland and local MP Maria Caulfield. The opening event was well attended with over 50 visitors in the garden at the time. Jim Buttress signed many copies of his book Gill Weaver at 5 Old Coastguard Cottages had created many pieces of upcycled furniture to sell in her garden, all the proceeds from which, over £200, went to Macmillan. Cllr. Dee Simpson, Mayor of Brighton & Hove, got into the party spirit and visited many of the Brighton gardens on the Saturday, including 70 Dale View, where ex Gogglebox star, Chris Ashby Steed and husband Tony were on hand to greet her with their dachshunds. Meanwhile on Sunday, Nigel and Sue Napier braved the dreadful weather and completed their challenge of having seen all 24 gardens over the weekend. After following the activities of Geoff's garden on social media, they had travelled from Suffolk in 2017 and enjoyed the event so came back again this year to see all the gardens. Nigel said "it was all worth while, despite the rain and Sue and I have picked up many ideas for our own plot!" Many visitors enjoyed tea and cake on the Saturday in the sun but not so many in the rain on the Sunday. Despite the bad weather over £7000 has been raised for the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton. Incredible. Anyone who missed the trail because of the weather can still donate via Geoff's Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail "Just Giving" page. Next years event will take place on 27 and 28 July. Contact Geoff on 01323 899296 if you would like to open your garden.
