Welcome to the September edition of the Peacehaven Directory. On our front cover this month are Amy and Emily, local twins who are looking forward to starting PCS in September. We wish them luck.

Things are starting to return to normal after a very nice summer. I hope you all managed to get away or have some lovely days out. The kids are heading back to school, I always have mixed feelings about this as I quite enjoy having them at home. It has also dawned on me that it is our son’s last year at secondary school, I don’t know where the time has gone. I was invited to receive some wonderful healing from the lovely Marianna of Anti Ageing Therapy. (See pg 13). There is also a lot of news about events that have taken place this summer, and Janice from Harlequin Studios has new classes starting (see page 23). Also the Wrestling is coming back to town and we have more exciting news about this, so make sure you read on… Have a great month.

Cheaper Ultra HD TV is in the shops ....but is it worth having? Ultra HD with four times the detail of normal HD televisions we are told its the latest technology to own. In-store demonstrations look good but there is a major problem. For the foreseeable future there will be no Ultra HD programmes to watch. At the Commonwealth Games BBC Research and Development trialled a number of technologies. The big obstacle is how to transmit the huge amount of data an Ultra HD television picture requires. The current bandwidth available to Freeview is bursting at the seams. Unless the Treasury releases a chunk of the radio spectrum to the television industry for a reasonable rate then terrestrial Ultra HD will not be an option. Creating a new terrestrial Freeview Ultra HD network would be a very long term project which may not be viable under the BBCs tight current financial constraints. In the short term Sky will probably push for the Satellite option while the BBC is looking at using high speed broadband (Infinity / Cable / Fibre broadband) for its tests. Unless you have high speed broadband or Sky and deep pockets Ultra HD is looking like a waste of money. At the moment a premium HD television is looking a better idea. Ultra HD could be a white elephant like 3D TV......

If you have had an accident then call us first. We can help make your insurance claim completely stress free by our Specialist Customer Care Team completely free of charge. After an accident you have the legal right to repair your car anywhere you wish it’s your choice. When you call your insurance company they may try to get the repairs done at the lowest possible price, without necessarily caring about the quality of the repair. You do not need to use your insurance company’s favoured establishment, and if your vehicle does not go to it's own manufacturers approved repair centre then you are at risk of invalidating any warranty that you have on the vehicle. Anti Ageing Inside and Out

ANTI AGEING THERAPY - HEALING OUTSIDE AND NOW INSIDE… Marianna of Anti Ageing Therapy asked me to try a new healing technique that she had tried and had great benefit with. It is Bio Energy healing that targets specific body problems. Marianna has had great success with it this year and wanted to learn it and to pass it onto her clients. She has always been an anti ageing skin therapist but has realised that in order to look good, sometimes you also have to pay attention to what is going on inside. She asked me to come for 4 consecutive days for around 30 minutes each day at roughly the same time and to see if I get any benefit from pains in my ankles and feet caused by a twisted pelvic and hip bone. Here is my diary of my treatment with Marianna… Day 1: My first treatment. Marianna and I decided to work on the whole of both legs as we were not sure of the cause of the pain in my feet and ankles. Marianna started the healing, we were both standing as she concentrated on my hip area and working down my leg. The pain intensified in both ankles and then went. On my right side I could feel I was able to stand completely flat to the floor and I felt straighter and taller. I had a few good realisations whilst I was being worked on and felt a little grief. Marianna finished on my feet. My right foot was completely cold and my left foot became very hot and was pulsating. I felt much lighter after the treatment and was looking forward to the next day. Day 2: Felt much better and was walking a lot better. The skin around the ankle was much improved and I felt very upright in my body. The healing today was a little different as I had progressed so fast. Day 3: The swelling in my feet had disappeared and I was able to wear a pair of shoes that I had not dared to even look at for a while. The healing session was short but the pain in my feet was much less during the session. I stood up for a long time that day and although my ankles got a little achy towards the evening my feet did not swell too much. Day 4: Last session and I became so relaxed. I could feel a tightness from the top of my knee down to my foot as Marianna worked hard on this particular leg in that area. It felt the best yet and once she had finished the pain in my foot had totally disappeared. Marianna suggested that I leave it a week and then let her know how I feel and we would decide if I felt the need to keep up the treatments or not. Time will tell whether or not the benefits are permanent, but even if not I think it will help me to work with my Osteopath and to help the treatment take and not slip out. Spiritually I feel very calm and able to cope with anything that comes my way.

Flying start

By Pitchside View

PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE FC got their season off to a flying start after winning their first silverware of the new campaign. They beat East Preston, last season’s winners of the Sussex County League Division 1 in the Sussex Community Shield Final. Haven dominated the game but couldn’t turn their superior possession into goals. The game finished 0-0 and the Magpies won the subsequent penalty shoot - out 3-1 to claim the new trophy. The club’s new giant official flag funded by the club’s supporters was unfurled for the first time at the Magpies’ first home game of the season when they beat a strong Tonbridge Angels team 4-1. It will be seen at all home and away games. If you fancy popping down to the Sports Park to watch your local team, the next home games are: September 6 v Bury Town; 13 FA Cup opponents TBC; 20 VCD Athletic; 24 Kingstonian; October 4 Harrow Borough. Admission prices are: £10 Adults, £5 Over 65 and free for U18s. FA Cup and FA Trophy prices may vary. If you really want to get behind your local team, it’s worth investing in a season ticket. Season tickets provide around a 50%

discount for Ryman league fixtures and cost just £10 per month for adults or £5 per month over 65s payable on monthly direct debit. And if you would like to get involved with the club on a commercial basis, they would love to hear from you as running and maintaining a club like Peacehaven & Telscombe FC is a costly business and needs all the support it can generate. To hire the social club or to find out more about commercial opportunities at the club call Andrew Melbourne on 01273 582471 or 07818 062071 or go to www.peacehavenfc.co.uk where you’ll also find full fixture details. Family Events

SPACE AT THE TABLE (SATT) is a community lunch club project running for the benefit of the local Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs community and supported by the local community. The project is just one of several run by THE ANNE BICKMORE CHILDREN’S FUND (abcfund) based in Peacehaven. The Church of the Ascension, Bramber Avenue, volunteers cooked lunch and provided entertainment for low income families during the school holidays. The event was held in the church hall and supported by The Mayor of Peacehaven, Cllr. Robbie Robertson, the mayor of Telscombe Cliffs, Cllr. Wayne Botting, the local police and Telscombe Community Church, all of whom provided funding for this project. One of the Mums said it was so nice having something that involved the whole family as very often there were events for children only but this time parents could relax and enjoy a meal, whilst the children were entertained before and after lunch. Anne Bickmore, BEM, Chair of the abcfund thanked the families for coming, the hardworking church volunteers and all the funders for enabling this project to continue to run. There is another lunch running again on Tuesday 26 August. Plans are also in hand for more in the Autumn halfterm and the Christmas school holidays. If you are able to fund a place (only £2.50) or would like to be included, please go to www.abcfund.org or email satt.project@gmail.com

WRESTLING’S most notorious double act are set to invade Peacehaven. “Dangerous” Danny Garnell and his manager, the self-styled “Twisted Genius” Dean Ayass, have been lined up to top the bill when big-time grappling returns to the Meridian Centre on October 11. Londoner Garnell has bludgeoned his way to the top of the heavyweight rankings since teaming up with Ayass, who always appears in his corner when he goes into battle in the ring … and invariably has some illegal tricks up his sleeve! But love them or loathe them, and the dynamic duo don’t have many friends, even their critics have to admit they get the job done. Garnell is now unbeaten in solo combat in Premier Wrestling Federation rings in four years and can boast victories over some big names, including Joel Redman, Flash Barker and Zack Sabre, on his CV. Among the other stars in action on the big Saturday night spectacular presented by top UK matchmakers Premier Promotions, will be “Dazzling” Darrell Allen, the multi-talented Young Wrestler of the Year, who was an instant hit with the Peacehaven fans when he won the American Rumble on the first Meridian show last year. Tickets for the show are available from the Information Office at the Meridian Centre, priced £10 for adults and £9 for concessions. A family ticket for two adults and two children costs £36. Telephone enquiries 01273 575125 OR 01273 585493. Our thanks to the show sponsor, Barwells Quality Solicitors. PICTURE: "Dangerous" Danny Garnell (right) and Dean Ayass.

Telscombe Agricultural training centre. Today there is a great deal of talk about the Great War, this being the hundredth anniversary of the start of the 1914 – 1918 conflict. However little has been mentioned so far of the after effects on the lives of those who lived during this period. In particular those returning soldiers who had suffered trauma in the trenches. Little at the time was known of depression, so hundreds were diagnosed with shell shock. Once they had recovered thought was finally given to their rehabilitation. Many of the young men who had volunteered for the war were possibly the first to benefit from the 1909 unemployment bill. This was an act of Parliament that for the first time gave helped to those who were out of work. Although the country was desperately poor by 1918 after four years of bloody fighting it was still part of the ethos of the period that the returning heroes should not lose out. The Lloyd George Government told the de-mobbed servicemen that they were coming back to “a land fit for heroes”. With this in mind a number of training centres were set up for disabled servicemen. Apparently one of the best was at Telscombe, an agricultural training centre which had been opened during 1920 it was designed for up to 100 men. Looking at the records this short lived training centre went from requisitions for equipment drawn up by civil servants in December 1919 to running carpentry courses and poultry training in July 1920 to final discussions which began in December 1920 regarding its closure the following year. It finally closed at the end of 1921 following very positive reviews in newspapers from around the country. Very little has been recorded about this post World War One facility, not even the actual location, let alone lists of the disabled ex-service men who were transferred there. All we know is that it was most probably sited on the old Telscombe Aerodrome, which covered some 140 Square meters of land centred roughly at the junction of Phyllis Avenue and Balcombe Road.

Early in 1920 huts were built for accommodation and teaching the men new skills, although it was hoped that their gardening, farming and carpentry skills were better than their football ones, losing 4 – 1 to Firle & Glynde in October 1920. So far it has been impossible to find any lists of those who were sent there. A report was sent to many local papers on late 1920 stating that some of the men came from nearby Brighton yet the only ones recorded are 5 who came from Bedfordshire. Possibly one of the last to leave in November 1921 was Frederick W Brooking aged 37 who was recovering from shell shock, a former plumber was learning market gardening. Harry ERRINGTON, aged 48 also was sent to Telscombe to learn market gardening but perhaps he could not get work afterwards as he was imprisoned for debt and summons to pay maintenance to his wife. It would be interesting to learn more about the ex-servicemen who having suffered during world war one spent time here on the south coast learning to breed rabbits, poultry, chickens and pigs as well as new skills of gardening and fruit tree cultivation. Should any reader of this have any family knowledge of a WWI veteran who stayed at the Telscombe training Centre please let me know. SALTDEAN AND DISTRICT CHOIR Originally established by the Saltdean Afternoon W.I. sometime in the late 1970's or early 1980's, the choir is now run by a small committee. They are a very friendly group and would welcome new members to share their enthusiasm for the joy of singing and giving pleasure to their audiences… There have been many changes of Conductors, pianists and musical Directors over the years, all have contributed greatly. Gordon Bull joined in 2010 as Musical Director and Jonathan Leigh is the accompanist. This has proved to be a very successful arrangement as Gordon is an experienced musician with a vast knowledge of teaching and conducting choirs. The number of Choir members has fluctuated over the years varying from eighteen to twenty-four. There are Altos and Sopranos but no-one is required to have an audition. They enjoy singing a variety of songs in unison or parts and hope to pass on their enjoyment to their audiences. They hold a concert at Christmas and another in the Spring or Summer. Rehearsals are held in the main hall at Saltdean Community Centre on Tuesdays at 9.45 to 12.00 from September to May. Small groups have entertained in Rest homes and other venues. It is said that singing is good for the soul and they believe this to be true. Please come along to meet them and see whether you would be interested in joining. Rehearsals will recommence on September 9th in preparation for a concert on December 16th. For further information contact the Secretary, Pamela Reynolds 01273-583701 or the Chairman, Audrey Pickles 01273-303596.

NEWHAVEN, PEACEHAVEN AND SEAFORD LIONS CLUB July is the first month of the Lion’s year and it is always a very busy one on our fund raising calendar with the Peacehaven Donkey Derby. The first two weeks were spent walking around Peacehaven knocking on doors and selling our programme. This culminated in the actual Donkey Derby opened by the mayor of Peacehaven and the mayor of Telscombe. It was a great day with plenty of sunshine and a large crowd. Thanks to all the people of Peacehaven and the surrounding area for all their support in helping us to raise about £6500. We did have one rider fall of her donkey and hurt herself, but thanks to the rapid response from St John and her trip to hospital she was pronounced fit after a few days rest, and she wants to ride again at Seaford. Having raised the money for use in the community we have already given out almost £1000: £300 is going to a Scout for a working trip. £360 is bring given to Seaford House social fund for their residents to become totally absorbed in Shakespeare on their trip to Stratford upon Avon by going to see a play in his home town. Another £300 has gone to Newhaven Cricket Club towards the purchase of a bowling machine for the youngsters. Newhaven has already produced two England cricketers to my knowledge, perhaps this machine will help to others on to cricketing glory!. COMING EVENT - FREE DIABETES TESTING 10.00 until 12.00 On Saturday 20 September 2014 we are holding another session of testing for Diabetes. Diabetes is a common health condition. About 1.4 million people in the UK are known to have diabetes — that’s about three in every 100 people. There are also an estimated one million people in the UK who have diabetes but don't know it and this could lead to serious problems if it is not treated, hence our free testing in the Peacehaven Meridian Centre. Last year our nurses tested nearly 100 people and of these 22 were considered high risk and 13 were referred to their doctors. None of these people suspected their condition. Free diabetes testing If you are interested in the Lions and the work we do give us a call on 0845 833 5981 or look at our website www.npslions.co.uk

Diligence and care saves life A Community Transport for the Lewes Area (CTLA) member of staff became so concerned when speaking to a vulnerable service user last week that she called emergency services and stopped a potentially serious situation. Julie, who has worked for CTLA for four years as an Administration Assistant, telephoned the older Seaford resident, who is a member of the travel club, to organise some trip details. Twice the line went dead as she struggled to hear what the gentleman was saying as he was short of breath and could hardly respond. Aware that the current heat has exacerbated some health conditions for members, Julie called the emergency services out to his address and informed his next of kin - his daughter-in-law. After spending a night in Brighton hospital and receiving treatment, the gentleman rang Julie to express his thanks and to tell her he had no recollection of answering the phone to her the day before due to his poor health until his family told him of her calls. He was extremely grateful for her actions and told her that unless she had called that day, his situation might not have been discovered for some time.

The CTLA Travel Club is free to join and more details can be found at www.ctla.org.uk or by calling 01273 517332.
