Welcome Page Welcome to the September 2018 edition of the Peacehaven Directory
Contents
Our front cover has been provided by Colette Langton of ‘Colette Langton Photography’ who has taken a lovely photo of her dog entitled ' A birthday walk for Hugo, 1 today!'. She tells me he is quite naughty but gets away with everything as he makes her heart melt! I can relate, having two thoroughly naughty dogs of my own.

ean Views The return of the radio Dinosaurs? ... or the end of an era When I first moved into the area there were two lively commercial local radio stations: Southern FM and Juice FM. Southern FM was taken over and re-branded as Heart Sussex in June 2009. Juice FM finally died on 14 August 2018. On 3 September 2018 it was launched as Capital Brighton. To complete the ignominy the Juice studios in Brighton town centre have closed with everything relocated to Portslade to the former home of arch competitor Southern FM (now Heart Sussex). These so-called local radio stations only transmit two shows a day: the breakfast show and the drive-time show, with the odd weekend programme. The rest of the shows for both Heart and Capital come from Global in Leicester Square.

To disguise their London origin the local stations transmit local news, weather, jingles and adverts. Even the local shows have to follow templates and playlists produced in London. It all a bit of a con really.... Meanwhile, in August, on a small local DAB multiplex in Portsmouth a different type of radio began: United DJs. As the name suggests it is a co-operative of former Radio 1, Radio Luxemburg DJs from the 60s and 70s. Their leader Mike Read is fed up with the onslaught of factory produced radio. (e.g. Global with Heart, Capital, X, Smooth etc). Now DJs like Mike Read, DLT, David Hamilton, Tony Prince, Emperor Rosco and Kid Jensen get to play what they are passionate about. In this area you can listen via an Android or iPhone App or online at www.uniteddj.com I hope the old boys succeed....

Win cash prizes with The 200 Club PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE FC’S new lottery, The 200 Club is now up and running, but you can still get involved…
By Pitchside View
You don’t have to be anything to do with the football club to participate, just someone who wants to support a local cause knowing that all the lottery’s profit will be ploughed back into the club’s ongoing maintenance programme.
Here you can set up a regular monthly direct debit payment. You have to be 16 or over to take part. For full details and terms and conditions, go to: http://www.peacehavenfc.co.uk/news/win-brilliantcash-prizes-with-the-200-club-2326325.html
Each month a draw will be made and three prizes of up to £100, £75 and £45 will be awarded. And at Christmas there will be a special bumper draw which will feature prizes of up to £500, £200 and £100.
Don’t hesitate in joining as once the 200 numbers have been allocated…that’s it!
For just £5 a month you have the chance to win one of the three monthly cash prizes. It’s very simple to take part and as well as having the chance to win cash prizes you will also be helping your local football club to fund its ongoing maintenance programme. All the money raised will stay in the two towns.

New groups for people with dementia and their carers Unpaid carers who care for people with dementia are invited alongside the person they care for to attend new support and activity groups, taking place in Bexhill, Hailsham and Seaford. The monthly Making Memories groups started in August, and are facilitated by a Carer Support Worker from Care for the Carers, a charity that supports unpaid carers across East Sussex. “We know that for many carers looking after someone living with dementia, they are unable to attend our other carers groups because they cannot leave the person they care for alone. We hope that these groups will overcome that barrier by providing a social opportunity that both the carers and the people they care for can enjoy,” says Jo Egan, Director of Services at Care for the Carers.
“We’ve created these particular dementia-friendly sessions for carers to help fill a gap in provision for carers in the areas in which the sessions will take place,” says Jo. Making Memories groups information: Seaford Date: 2nd Thursday of each month, 2pm-4pm. Starting 9 August. Venue: St James Trust Community Centre, 11 Blatchington Road, Seaford, BN25 2AB. Bexhill Date: 3rd Wednesday of each month, 2pm-4pm. Starting 15 August. Venue: St Michaels and All Angels Community Hall, Glassenbury Drive, Bexhill on Sea, TN40 2NY.
Each group will offer a chance for carers to meet other carers of people with dementia, and have a chat and a coffee. Activities Hailsham Date: 4th Wednesday of the month, 2pm-4pm. in each group will be led by the carers attending, but are likely Starting 26 September. Venue: Day Centre, Bentley Grange, to include things like quizzes, music, and reminiscence sessions. Binder Lane, (off Reef Way), Hailsham, East Sussex, BN27 1FA. “The idea is for carers and people living with dementia to have Carers please note: an inclusive and safe space to come together, relax, and The groups are for carers of people with dementia to attend alongsocialise in friendly company,” continues Jo. side the person they care for.
About dementia in East Sussex Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford clinical commissioning group (EHS CCG) area is home to the highest number of people with dementia in the county, and also the highest estimated proportion of people with dementia, reflecting its larger elderly population than other parts of East Sussex. The expected number of people living with dementia in East Sussex will have risen to 15,900 by 2030, slightly more than the current population of Uckfield. (Data from East Sussex Dementia Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, Nov 2016).
NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY while you wait service Tuesday - Saturday see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or
We ask for the carer to be responsible for the person they care for and any toileting needs they may have. Carers will need to stay for the session and not leave the person they care for during the session. We also ask that the cared for person be settled and able to engage. If the person being cared for is at a more advanced stage of dementia and is likely to become agitated or is restless, then the group will not be suitable for them.

Community Voice… I have recently been delving into my ancestors using the recognised sites and I have come to the conclusion it is like looking at a tortoise; all I see is the shell but not what is inside and the inside is the interesting bit. For instance, I lived with my grandmother and thought I knew her, but did I? What did I really know about her? Did I know where she lived as a child, town or village, What type of house, how many rooms, did they own it or was it rented, did it have a garden, what did the family eat, what was her favourite meal, did she have a pet, what was it called, did she have many boyfriends, where did she meet her husband, what was his family like, and how many siblings did he have… I could go on, but that’s what I mean about the tortoise, I only know the shell. So I say to all the children, sit your grandparents down and grill them, pump them dry. If you don’t do it now you will regret it later like me. Grandparents you could do the same. Hide the kids mobile phones, switch off their computers and talk… By: John Armstrong
Deans Praise Group - come and join us! The Deans Praise Group started life in 2016. It grew out of local churches working and making music together for what is now an annual ecumenical service in January or February we enjoyed the music making together part so much that we decided to continue to meet once a month. We take our inspiration from the Bible exhortation – ‘sing to the Lord a new song’. So we make music and sing for the joy of it - learning new songs (what may be a very familiar song to some may be totally unknown to others), working together across church boundaries and encouraging each other in our faith journeys. Sometimes we practise and learn songs for a special service in one of our local churches; but the focus is on singing pieces we enjoy and find inspirational, and sharing them with others. We always have refreshments and time for fellowship as part of the evening. Musicians and singers of all capabilities are very welcome – you really don’t have to have any special gifts or training. Several local churches are already represented in the group but we’d love to draw in more: whether you worship regularly in a particular local church or whether you go further afield or even perhaps don’t go to church at all, if you love singing or making music, do think about coming along. In short, if you believe we’re ‘better together’ and want to join us or would like more information, then do get in touch with Phil Parsons (philparsonsofbrighton@gmail.com ) or me (contact details below). It’s an informal and friendly group and all really are very welcome. We generally meet at 8 pm on the first Friday of the month at one of the local churches or, occasionally, in a home. Our next meetings are: Friday 7 September at St Martins United Reformed Church (Saltdean); and Friday 5 October at Holy Cross Church (Woodingdean). Phil and I look forward to hearing from you. Knight Support Knight Support are a community project which aims to bring communities together and spread kindness and hope to rough sleepers in Brighton and Hove! We as a group provide support by coordinating donations through local donation centres which we have teamed up with throughout Sussex. We are always looking to here from new people who wish to volunteer as “Clothing Managers” (day hours) or “Night Shift Managers” (evenings between 6.30-8.30pm) who also share the same passion for helping those less fortunate and in need. We have teamed up with team from the “The Good Companions” public house, Peacehaven who have very kindly offered their support to our project throughout last winter and the recent hot summer months. We know how communities come together through all the seasons, now that winter is looming we would like some help! We collect donations and distribute to other charities, rough sleepers directly on the streets and also visit the nightly soup kitchens in Hove and Kemptown.
Knight Support community project started with a single mother Lynne Knight, 41 to four daughters Hani, 16 Domini, 14 Tiggy, 13 and Suri,8 who were moving house and had a few spare duvets and drove around Brighton and Hove handing them out to the rough sleepers. However, it eventually became evident that duvets were not what the rough sleepers needed as they had various health and mobility issues; a more desired donation was sleeping bags. Everyone at Knight support would like to say a huge thank you to the Peacehaven and surrounding areas for their amazing support, to Casandra Copping our Clothing Manager in Peacehaven and to the the team at The Good Companions! For further information or to apply for a volunteer position please either email lynne@knightsupport.co.uk or view www.facebook.com/KnightSupport Picture left: Lynne Knight and her 4 daughters
Many items are needed during the summer months like wet wipes, deodorant, bottled water, suntan lotion, socks and new underwear as well as summer clothes and shoes for men and women. Some people just need someone to show some care during a hard time in their life and by making donations we could all be working towards a happier future.
NatWest - Working in the Community NatWest has introduced a new role in response to the changing ways our customers bank with us...
Community Bankers will work in local communities recently affected by branch closures. As part of their role, they will provide customers with personal assistance in accessing the right banking options for their needs across a range of channels.
As part of their role, Community Bankers will:
Jacky Gill has been appointed as NatWest Community Bankers for the East Sussex region. Through a partnership with Peacehaven Town Council Jacky will be based in The Town Council offices in the Meridian centre on a weekly basis on Tuesdays from 10.00am to 12 noon.
Conduct financial health checks with customers, to identify opportunities to help them with new products or services appropriate to their goals, needs and priorities. These events will also be held in local community venues.
Commenting on her new role, Jacky said: “I’m excited to have the opportunity to develop a strong relationship with our customers in Peacehaven & surrounding area, helping to ensure that NatWest remains an important part of its many thriving communities. The impact of technological changes on the way people bank with us has been dramatic but we’re also aware that not everyone is comfortable with these changes.
Utilise social media to increase their presence in the community, through the sharing of useful and relevant financial and digital information and tips
“In my role as Community Banker, I’m looking forward to hosting regular events at local venues to help educate customers on being financially fit, training them on the different ways to bank in a digital world and how they can protect themselves from fraudsters.”

Article (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips CERVICOGENIC HEADACHES (FROM THE NECK) Anatomy: The neck typically has 7 vertebrae, which turn on facet joints, arched wing-like structures that stick out either side of the rear part of the vertebrae. They stop the vertebrae from bending and twisting too far and protect the spinal cord, the vital network of nerves running through the centre of each vertebra. Nerves exit the spine from the either side of spaces between two vertebral bodies, separated by an intervertebral disc. Intervertebral discs, complex fibro-cartilaginous structures that act as shock absorbers for daily activities separate the vertebrae. They are about 2.5cm in diameter and 5mm thick with a tough, fibrous outer membrane called the annulus fibrous, an elastic core inside called the nucleus pulposus and a cartilaginous endplate. The cells of these structures change as we age; starting as gel, fluid filled sacs in children and hardening to become less elastic and more prone to injury and degeneration with ageing producing pathological symptoms such as pain. Symptoms: There may be pain from sudden movement of the neck or from holding the neck in the same position for a long time. There is often restricted range of motion in the neck (stiffness), pain in the head, eye, neck, shoulder or arm on one side. There may be random arm pain that may also feel like nerve pain. CGH is a steady pain that can feel worse when you cough, sneeze or take a deep breath. Some of the symptoms can be similar to a migraine, including pain in your arm or shoulder, blurry vision and feeling sick or uncomfortable with bright lights and loud noise. Confusingly, some people can get CGH and migraine at the same time. Causes: There can be many causes of CGH. Problems in the neck vertebrae, particularly from job related long term postural issues, e.g. hairdressers, dentists, truck drivers and people who carry their heads in front of their bodies, putting extra weight on the neck and upper back, e.g. Texter’s neck. Falls, sports injuries, whiplash and arthritis that may cause compression in the neck vertebrae affecting the nerves even years later. More serious causes of CGH can be a tumour or fracture.
Diagnosis: Because there are so many types and causes of headaches your doctor will ask you about your headaches, what you are doing when you get the pain and where it hurts; whether you have hit your head, have a rash or if it gets worse over time. You may need emergency care if your headache comes on very suddenly, is extremely painful or you start to feel dizzy. Thorough neurological and orthopaedic evaluation may be needed to determine the cause and X-rays, MRI and CT scans as well as nerve conduction and blood tests can rule out more serious issues. Medical history is taken, as well as reflexes and other neurological and orthopaedic tests; examination for strength and flexibility by moving the neck and pressing on certain areas to see if it causes a headache. If a nerve block takes the pain away, the headache is probably caused by a problem in the nerves in the neck. Treatment: Medical interventions include anti-inflammatory and other pain relief medication, muscle relaxers, nerve blocks and rarely, surgery to release nerves. Physical therapy including massage, manipulation, stretching exercises, acupuncture, yoga, deep breathing and relaxation techniques. Prevention: Develop good postural habits and consider ergonomics, particularly how you sit at your desk, driving, on the couch when watching television or when using your phone or laptop. Yoga, deep breathing and relaxation techniques. Seek professional help after injury. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine the spine, neck and all areas leading to the site of pain; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength and functionality and assess motor nerve pathways. Consider the effect of the condition on the whole body. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests. Treat to reduce any swelling, muscle tension and pain and improve joint alignment. Advice regarding specific strengthening and stretching exercises as well as postural/ lifestyle advice. Treatment may include manipulation, deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, fascial techniques, dry needling, etc.

More than education

Turtle Alternative Learning Local primary school teachers, Anita Garai and Karen Russell are on a mission. With 33 years of teaching experience between them, they have decided to do something about the way our children are being educated. '' We've both seen what our current education system is doing to some of our children. It's just not set up to give them all what they need. Sitting at desks and working towards tests is genuinely okay for some. But for many, it's just not who they are and it doesn't suit them. Some manage to adapt themselves in order to conform and stay out of trouble, but they can lose the essence of who they really are in the process. Others, however can't and they can be seen as failures and troublemakers. It's heartbreaking to stand by and watch,'' says Anita. The two teachers met by chance, as Anita was collecting a friend's daughter from her tutoring session. The tutor turned out to be Karen, another teacher passionate about children being able to love learning and feel good about themselves in the process. ''We started chatting,'' says Anita ''and quickly realised that we shared a very similar vision - to create an alternative learning community for children who can't thrive in our current system.'' A few months later, having found a perfect location for their learning community, on the edge of the South Downs in North Peacehaven - with a beautiful indoor space set in a glorious outdoor environment, Karen and Anita will welcome their prospective families in September. ''We have called ourselves Turtle Alternative Learning, says Karen, as in many traditions, turtles represent a steadily unfolding journey through life.
see the on-line magazine at www.peacehavendirectory.co.uk or
“It aligns perfectly with our philosophy, that children should be allowed to learn and grow at their natural pace.'' The curriculum at Turtle, will be personalised to the children that attend. It will be designed around their interests and curiosities, as well as inspired by the environment and spontaneous happenings. Great value will be given each day to creativity and emotional development. ''The current state of young people's mental health concerns us,'' says Anita who is also a children's creative therapist. ''We will be giving the children in our care a clear message that emotions are welcome, and help them to recognise and express their feelings in a healthy way. We will be giving a space and opportunity to do this every day, together as a community.'' If you are interested in this alternative place of learning then see the website www.turtlealtlearning.co.uk or you can also email Anita and Karen at info@turtlealtlearning.co.uk

68 Local Cycle Club Information
Cycle Seahaven - Bike rides for all abilities and ages Cycle Seahaven’s popularity continues to grow. It now has 330 members, an increase of about 10% so far this year. We organise rides for both on-road and off-road cyclists, the rides being varied in terms of distance and terrain; also, we cater for a wide range of cycling abilities. The majority of members choose to cycle on our off-road rides but the on-road rides are becoming more popular, especially the ‘touring’ rides of which there are three each week: Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Our Tuesday touring rides incorporate sections of shorter, flatter routes aimed at those wanting to get back into cycling. We call this ‘Easy Touring’ and the typical route distance is 11 miles.
● Secondly, it can help to get you out of a tight spot, giving great acceleration just when you need it, like getting away from a junction across a road. ● Thirdly, it is great in mud! Often, I can keep going through a deep sticky patch when others bog down. ● Fourthly, it is FUN! It puts the “wow” back into cycling for me and it flattens Sussex.
Some cyclists have been joining our rides on e-bikes which is great to see. These are normal bikes with gears and pedals which have been built with an electric motor and battery. These need charging after each ride (no, the battery doesn’t recharge going downhill) but this only takes about three hours at the most. You still have to pedal these bikes! Their correct name is pedelec (pedal electric cycle) and they are covered by legislation which limits their power assistance to a maximum of 15.5 mph. You can go faster than this but only by pedaling without power assistance.
Tony says that one of the most frequent questions he is asked is How far does the battery last?
One of our cyclists, Tony Rowswell, has been using a pedelec for over four years now both on-road and offroad and he says that there are four main benefits of these.
So, whether or not you have a pedelec, why not try out some of our rides. You don’t have to be a member. You can cycle on a maximum of three rides before joining our club. Take a look at our Rides Calendar at www.cycleseahaven.org.uk/calendar and you’ll see all the rides listed.
● Firstly and most obviously, they give you additional power to go up hills. As an octogenarian, I still have sufficient strength but limited lung capacity. I could get up hills under my own power but would be gasping at the top. With my pedelec adding double my power, I can ride up local hills such as Bopeep and Itford Hill without too much trouble. Using an e-bike will still help you to get fit as you can choose the power output level and use lower power as you improve.
“There is no easy answer. Normally, you have 3 or 4 levels of power delivery so obviously the lower the level the longer it will last. A lot will depend on the terrain – hills will use power more quickly. On the level it depends on your speed – if you can reach 16 or 17 mph, again the motor cuts out and you use no power. I have never exhausted a full battery, even having done up to 50 miles over the Downs”.
