HMV, the last major music chain, has gone into administration. S

In 1970s and 1980s every town had at least one decent record shop and a few half-hearted ones. I wasted many a Saturday afternoon poring the racks looking for hidden treasure. My favourite shop as a university student was Bridport Record Centre, it was part of the panel of shops that made up the official charts so it was well looked after by every record company. It seemed a perfect eco-system where everybody benefited. Then the record companies did something incredibly stupid, they turned their back on the army of small shops. The record companies signed up to supply supermarkets the top 40 albums at super low prices. The record companies thought they were very clever because rather than shipping small quantities of each release to thousands of shops they could just bulk deliver to a handful of supermarkets. The Top 40 releases were being sold to the public at below trade wholesale price. Customers felt ripped off by the record shops, many deserted - never to return. Record shops needed these chart sales to cross-subsidise the slower moving specialist music. In time this one decision would have killed the record shops but the digital downloads speeded up the process. For once, technology was not too blame, it was the greed of a few executives who had no understanding of how their business functioned - they destroyed their whole industry.

Local Resident’s Inspiring Story

Getting back on his feet to help others Local resident and restaurant owner who lost his leg after an attack on his business is taking his first steps on the road to recovery to raise money for the centre that is helping him. Paul Brayshaw was locking up late on August 18 when something was thrown at the front of his pizza shop, smashing the glass frontage and slashing his arm.

Up until now he has taken only a few tentative steps but he is aiming to walk 400 steps with just a stick to help the centre that has been looking after him.

As he ran for help he fell on the kerb, causing a lifechanging injury. His left leg was so badly damaged that after two operations surgeons told him they would have to amputate it below the knee to save him.

Paul said: “The pain is indescribable really. When they amputated my leg they tried to save as many of the nerves as possible, but that means I get a lot of phantom pains. Sometimes it feels as if my foot is on fire or my toes are crunched up. It can be agony.

The father of two young boys spent more than five weeks in hospital and was initially taking nearly 50 tablets a day but, a year to the day since first opening Paul’s Pizza, in Lustrells Vale, Saltdean, (Brighton) he was back in the kitchen.

“When I came back to work I just tried to prep as much as possible. I’d only opened the previous November and things were going really well but when you have your own business you don’t earn anything when you are not working. All the bills were still coming in all the time I was in hospital.

Although his whole life has been turned on its head he brought home his artificial leg on December 19 and he aims to take his first 400 steps on it on New Year’s Day “It is going really well since I’ve re-opened, even though to raise money for the Sussex Rehabilitation Centre at it has been so difficult. On crutches, and still in pain, he was determined to re-open his artisan pizza restaurant, serving customers for the first time on November 15, the first anniversary of his business opening. He started rehabilitation in November and hopes, with a lot of hard work, to be walking properly on his artificial limb within a year.

PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE BOWLS CLUB THE SPORTS CENTRE, PIDDINGHOE AVENUE, PEACEHAVEN, EAST SUSSEX, BN10 8RJ

Peacehaven and Telscombe Bowls Club was formed in 1981 at a time when interest in the sport and the size of the local population were growing fast. There were then three “local” bowling clubs, the newly formed Saltdean, and the two long established clubs at Rottingdean (1934) and Newhaven (1901). Over the intervening years “P&TBC” has grown and matured such that we now have over eighty members with an excellent pavilion and a superb bowling green, the latter being one of the best in the County. Located at Peacehaven’s Piddinghoe Sports Park near to our good friends at Peacehaven and Telscombe Football Club, we share a spacious car park and are looking to enjoy even better access and neighbourhood facilities when the Big Parks Project commences development in September 2013. Bowls is one of the few sports that can be played by almost anyone, young or old, male or female, fit or not-so-fit. It combines the pleasure of competition with the fun of socialising. It can be taken seriously or just for light-hearted entertainment or for any combination of the two. So why aren’t we turning away an overabundance of prospective members? To those of us fortunate enough to have found our way into the sport it is a mystery. Is it easier to stay at home and watch telly or sit in the garden watching the flowers grow? There is nothing to compare with the pleasure of being on the green with a group of new friends participating in gentle competition under the warmth of an English summer sun. Be you callow youth or frail with age, bowls is a great leveller. If you can swing your arm with the right speed and direction you will succeed. If you don’t try it you could be missing out on an international sports career. You will certainly be missing many truly enjoyable moments. Not to mention the after-match get together in the pavilion for tea, beer, wine or whatever.

With the right support Sussex could become the leading County in the sport of Bowls. And we would love to make Peacehaven a centre of County excellence. You could become a part of this. The hoped-for extension to our pavilion would also enable us to open the Club in the winter months for playing the increasingly popular Short Mat Bowls, a pastime enjoyed in a warm and relaxing environment by many retirees. In this way we will be able to offer year round activity and enjoyment to all our members. Is it expensive? To become a full playing member costs a £20.00 joining fee and an annual subscription of £80.00. For under 21s its considerably less. For this you get as many games as you wish to play, from late April to the end of September plus any games you might play at most of our neighbour’s greens. For the beginners we run a Monday afternoon teaching session where you can learn the rudiments of how to play the game and the rules which govern it. Nothing serious and all pretty obvious. I can assure all who would like to investigate further a warm welcome at our club. And a promise that you won’t ever regret it. Our aim at Peacehaven is to develop the Club and its facilities to the point where we can host County matches. We’re not quite there yet because our pavilion is just a little too small. However as mentioned earlier we are hoping to see considerable improvements under the auspices of the Big Parks Project which will include an extension of our pavilion by a further 6 metres. This will enable us to host the largest visiting teams and their supporters. So watch out for some interesting and entertaining fixtures to come at the Piddinghoe Avenue Sports Park in the next few years.

International Women’s Day Event

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY Peacehaven Celebrations 2013

International Women’s Day has been celebrated since the 1900’s and is still celebrated to this day. This year in Peacehaven the women of our town are in for a very special treat, organised by local resident Ayesha Choudhury The Peacehaven International Woman’s Day celebration will be on the 6th March from 5pm - 8pm at Community House in the Meridian Centre. I am local resident Ayesha Choudhury. I am organising the event and would like to invite you all to attend. International Woman’s Day is celebrated all over the world, mostly in Asian countries, as in those countries women are often domestically abused and misused and are often considered not more than dirt under their husbands feet. They started celebrating International Woman’s Day to make people aware of the problems that women face. They have been organising this celebration to give all women that are better off, a fun day out and to use that money to help those women in need. I am doing this for the community, to promote local businesses and to give all women regardless of age, nationality or religion a fun day out. There will be great raffle prizes like vouchers for beauty treatments, fitness activities and much more. There will be Indian food as well as tea, coffee, other beverages and snacks to purchase. There will also be entertainment like a local dance group and Alexandria Burfield will be giving a Zumba class for all who attend. There will be stalls with beauty treatments, haberdasheries, jewellery, arts and crafts and much more. Please contact me if you are interested in setting up a stall at the event on 07796 446683. ‘Christmas Day Lunch This year’s lunch was held at the Church of the Ascension hall and was attended by some 40 folk who would otherwise have been alone on Christmas day. The hall had been decorated to look like a cosy cottage with wintry scenes from the windows and even Rudolph was in attendance, resting from the nights travels..

Thanks go to everyone who helped, to the Mayor’s Fund and the House Project for their financial contributions and encouragement and to the Sussex Express and Peacehaven Directory for advertising the event.

Between 11.30 and 3.30 guests were treated to : Refreshments ( most opted for a glass of sherry) White Christmas (the film that is) - Games of Bingo - Silly Quizzes - A present from Santa (thanks to the staff at Telscombe Cliffs school) - Listening to the Queen and oh yes eating a three course Christmas Dinner. All those who attended and the 9 people who had meals delivered to their homes also received, a small Christmas cake, a Christmas cup cake and a calendar (from the Sunday School children). Everyone who came and helped seemed to enjoy themselves and they looked resplendent in their Ho Ho Ho aprons (supplied by the ladies of Peacocks Customer Service department).
