As the summer starts to wind down and autumn is nearly upon us cycling fans might be interested to know that one of the last big races of the year - The Tour of Britain - is coming to Sussex this month and finishes in Brighton on the 13, the race bypasses the Deans area as the riders are directed inland at Newhaven but I think Ditchling Beacon will be a great spot to go and watch if you are interested in seeing more than the briefest glimpse of the riders.

For those who feel energetic there is still time to enter a team for the Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions Swim Marathon in October - see page 49. Or for something less demanding there is the Hanover Band playing Mozart at St Margaret’s later this month see page 39. Keith - Editor

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 60
“Microsoft calling We can't know for sure exactly when the first scam call was made claiming to be Microsoft on the phone, but it has certainly been around for the past 5 years. And this scam is still doing the rounds and still catches people out. "Good afternoon Mr Smith, I am calling from Microsoft because your computer has been infected with a virus. Are you next to your computer?" Now the scammers may take various routes after this, "showing" you the viruses by getting you to click on areas you wouldn't normally visit, asking you to let them remote connect to your machine or getting you to visit a webpage and download some software. Whatever route they take it all seems plausible which is why so many people are still caught out. So what should you do if this has happened to you and you've fallen foul to the scam? Firstly, don't feel bad about it, as you are far from alone. Secondly, do not ignore it and hope for it to go away - if "Microsoft" or any other "technical" company has called you and you have granted them access to your
computer, either remotely or through downloading something, they will be able to gain access to all of your personal data. Changing your passwords is your first step, along with informing your bank. If you have an anti virus installed and are aware how to, run a thorough scan. Should the worst have happened, tell the police as well as you may require an incident number for insurance purposes. If you are in any doubt as to whether you have let someone access your machine when you shouldn't have then please feel free to get in touch with us for a chat - and if you know that you would never fall victim to a scam like this, please ensure that you tell others who may be more vulnerable so we can try and stop it happening to anyone else.

Fertility Massage This is also known as abdominal sacral massage and is a natural aid to women’s health issues and digestive complaints. This deep, yet gentle massage works by reducing tightness of muscles, ligaments and fascia of the abdomen, releasing pressure on the organs and allowing them to be in an optimum position. This in turn will improve the blood, nerve and lymph flow which nurtures the area to restore health and function. The massage focuses on breaking down scar tissue and clearing congestion, leaving you and your abdomen feeling relaxed and nurtured. What conditions can benefit from fertility massage? Reproductive Complaints ● Infertility/ miscarriage ● Endometriosis/ fibroids ● PCOS ● Painful/ heavy periods ● Irregular cycles ● Clotting ● Cysts ● Poor egg health/ weak ovulation
Digestive Complaints ● IBS ● Constipation/ diarrhoea ● Crohn’s disease ● Celiac ● Bloating ● Indigestion/ heart burn ● Stress ● Emotional trauma ● Poor nutrient absorption article by Launa Blackham osteopath who has recently joined the pain solutions team.

Health & nutrition advice
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Oats Oats (Avena sativa) are a cereal grain grown in temperate regions for its seed. Oats contain gluten so are not suitable for celiac, though gluten free oats are available. They can be rolled or crushed into oatmeal, ground into fine flour, used in a variety of baked goods, such as oatcakes, oatmeal cookies and oat bread, eaten as porridge, muesli and granola; oatmilk is a popular alternative to cow's milk. Nutrition: Rich source of B-complex vitamins, protein, fats, minerals and dietary fibre, beta-glucan. Beta-glucans belong to a group of polysaccharides in the cell wall of bacteria, fungi including mushrooms, barley and oats. They also contain avenanthramides, flavonoids, flavonolignans, triterpenoid saponins, sterols, and tocols. Immunomodulatory and health beneficial effects including anti-cancer, anti-cholesterol, anti-coagulant properties; also anti-cytotoxic, anti-mutagenic, anti-tumour. Avenanthramides, polyphenols found exclusively in oats may play a role in their anti-atherogenic, anti-oxidant, anti-genotoxic activity; also anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, anti-itching, which may provide additional protection against coronary heart disease, colon cancer, and skin irritation. Anti-Inflammatory / Anti-Oxidant: due to avenanthramides and beta-glucans. Oats decreased systemic and exerciseinduced inflammation and increased antioxidant defence in postmenopausal women. Cancer: Oats may reduce colon cancer risk due to high fibre content and avenanthramides. Beta-glucans stimulate the immune system, modulating cellular immunity, beneficial in fighting infections (bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic). Bound phytochemicals could survive stomach and intestinal digestion to reach the colon, partly explaining grain consumption in prevention of colon, other digestive, breast and prostate cancers. Cardiovascular and Cholesterol: Whole oats decrease serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and blood pressure and can reduce the need for antihypertensive medication. Cystic Fibrosis: Oats may be a source of acid stable lipase useful in treating patients with pancreatic insufficiency, especially those who have cystic fibrosis. Diabetes: Whole oats improve glucose and insulin responses, beta-glucan increases insulin sensitivity index. Oat bran in snacks extends glycaemic response, possibly prolonging glucose release and affecting satiety responses.
Digestion: Oat-bran helps improve constipation management and B12 bioavailability in elderly. Oat wholemeal or beta-glucan increases intestinal energy charge, particularly in the small intestine (ileum) and elevates amounts of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus in the colon, benefitting intestinal health and increasing insulin sensitivity. Exercise Stress: Oat beta-glucan may offset the increased risk of upper respiratory tract infection associated with exercise stress. Oats eaten before exercise can alter metabolism by influencing glucose homeostasis during early exercise and plasma branched-chain amino acid concentrations over a substantial range of metabolic demands. Obesity: Oat bran-rich foods have beneficial effect on the metabolic profile of overweight premenopausal women. Oat beta-glucan decreased insulin secretion over 2 hours. Satiety was increased with 2.2 g beta-glucan and subsequent meal intake decreased by greater than 400 kJ with 5g beta-glucan. Skin: Avenanthramides have an anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine activity that helps relieve skin itch and irritation. Adding Oats to your Diet ● Whole oats porridge, oatcakes, oatmeal, oatmilk, oat muesli and granola ● Add to a meal or snack to lower the glycaemic index ● My favourite snack is oatcakes with manuka honey and cinnamon We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Local history
Local History - Part 28
Saltdean’s earliest buildings part 1 Mike Laslett
One of the first things remarked upon by visitors to Saltdean is the great variety of house styles, a Mock Tudor mansion next door to an art deco house, or a modern cubist home next to a green roofed Spanish-style house. In the 1930’s a great variety of architectural styles were liberally scattered over Saltdean, often in isolated positions. Two very contrasting house styles illustrated here are only yards apart in Arundel Drive West, facing The Oval Park.
The flats shown are Marine View. They were designed in the art deco style by Richard Jones, who was also responsible for Saltdean Lido and the Ocean Hotel.
The first is in the Mock-Tudor style of the local estate company. The second, No. 33, is a house by Duke & Simpson in the Art Deco style. It was from here that mountains of garments were sent during the Second World War to the services, the Merchant Navy and to blitzed civilians by members of the Saltdean Fellowship. The Fellowship was founded to help the homeless and destitute, train in first aid, hold working parties to provide items required by the services and to promote a sense of community spirit. At that time no.33 was known as at 'Bedford' rather than 'Bethany.'
In Arundel Drive West we found Mock Tudor and art deco homes virtually side by side. Strangely enough in Chichester Drive East we find art deco houses actually opposite some Mock Tudor ones, as the final picture shows. It would seem that, after the horrors of World War 1, the General Strike and the recession, people either wanted their home to reflect a bold new future or find comfort in the cosy and familiar Tudor style!
There are more striking examples of both styles but I chose these two, not only since they are in the same road, but also because both strive to wrap windows around the corners of the building in order to bring plenty of seaside light into the home. The art deco does this by angular windows, the Mock Tudor by a two storey bay window. In Regency Brighton the same result was achieved using bow windows.

Local Lions group in action
Rottingdean and Saltdean Sunday 19th Lions Swim Marathon October 2014 I have often seen quoted that Johnny Weissmuller, one of the first screen Tarzans, opened the Saltdean Lido back in the 1930s. Presumably he had the first swim in the pool; reason enough to save this marvellous local amenity, I would think.
Whether true or not, people in the Deans area love their swimming with groups dotted around that attempt to swim in the sea all year round – waves, wind, snow and ice permitting. With this proud tradition a ‘swim marathon’ is a worthy challenge for our local population. Hence, the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions are this October providing, once more, just that with an endurance swimming challenge with proceeds going to charity. Every year, for the past twenty years or so, Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions have held a sponsored swim. It is always open to pubs and clubs, businesses, schools, youth groups, families and other charities. This year it is taking place on Sunday 19 October from 10:00 at Roedean School pool. The Lions supply forms so that teams of any size can arrange their own sponsors who can pledge a fixed sum or a donation per lap completed during the one-hour swim. Team members collect their sponsorship money and can donate all the money collected to the Lions, or donate one half to the Lions and retain the other half for their own charity. At least 75% of the Lions’ share of the money is donated to the Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice. For last year's swim this amounted to £750. Every penny of the balance goes to other local charities. The Lions’ Challenge Shield is presented to the team raising most money and held by them for a year. In 2013 the 23 Brighton Beavers were the proud winners. Also, last year there were two teams from Lewes Swimming Club who were raising money for Coasting Together the user support group for amputees and wheelchair users based at the Sussex Rehabilitation Centre at Brighton General Hospital. One of the swimmers was a young amputee himself with a below knee amputation of one leg. With them were the Sackville Swans, the Whiteway Wonders and teams from Brighton Swimming Club; Deans Youth Project
and Longhill School. The charities really appreciated the immense effort these great teams put in but more teams would be most welcome for this year. For more information or to be added to the distribution list for entry packs, please contact the organiser Lion Ian Christie. (Email: ian_christie@yahoo.co.uk, Tel: 01273 960437 or Mob: 07917 155048). The closing date for entries is Friday 10 October. Incidentally, I shall be a member of the graceful Sackville Swans for this year’s event. Lion - Roger Bluff.

Rottingdean Clubs
Rottingdean Camera Club Last year was another good year for Rottingdean Camera Club. We welcomed several new members bringing fresh ideas and inspiration for the rest of us. We had our usual round of competitions, presentations and workshops. We visited Lewis Camera Club who had challenged us to a competition which sadly we lost by 1 point! But a fun evening nevertheless. Our photoshoot this year was a day out photographing steam engines courtesy of the Bluebell Railway. We had a fun competition on the theme of "bizarre". Yes, we got some very weird entries! Our new season starts on Monday Oct 6th, 7.30pm at the Whiteway Centre. We promise newcomers a warm welcome and a chance to share our skills and ideas. We aim to have fun on the way too. If you have wondered about joining a Camera Club, then maybe this is your moment. Braving a competition for the first time can be daunting but entries are anonymous (unless you win!) and the professional judge's comments on your own, and everyone else's pictures, help us learn how to do it better next time. We run workshops to turn snappers into photographers, and when you see you own photographs projected for the first time in high quality on our huge screen, that really is a wow moment! So why not join the Rottingdean Camera Club!. You can just turn up on the first night, or contact Brian Knight on 302605 for more information. http://www.rottcc.co.uk/

Celebrity opening for new nets at Rottingdean Cricket Club Rottingdean Cricket Club opened its new nets and artificial pitch with a ribbon cutting ceremony performed by actor and Club President Michael Jayston. In front of over 160 adult and junior members, supporters and sponsors Mr Jayston and the Club's Chair Sarah Hunt officially opened the fantastic new facility by thanking those who made it all possible, in particular a large grant provided by the SITA Trust, and key donations and sponsorship from Dotsquares, South Coast Taxis, Johny's Wares and numerous generous individual donations. Sarah Hunt commented that the Club was absolutely delighted with the ÂŁ50K equipment and pitch development and added that 'The new nets and pitch are a wonderful addition for the Club at a time when it is growing rapidly with large numbers of new adult and junior members joining up'. Sarah also conveyed her thanks to all the volunteers that run the Club . Rottingdean Cricket Club runs three Saturdays league teams, two Sunday elevens and a mid week team as well as junior Raiders teams for boys and girls up to the age of 16.
