Welcome

Welcome to the September Edition If you just had a quick glance at our cover picture before you started reading this month’s magazine it is likely you missed the windmill like pattern formed in the sky above Rottingdean windmill. This nicely timed shot was captured for us by our regular photographer Colette Langton. On page 11 of this month’s edition is an excellent article on Windows 10 by Dolphin Computer Upgrades, I will add my own Windows 10 experience to their advice in recommending you take a back up of your entire system before you try and install it, just occasionally the upgrade doesn’t work and you can be left with a completely unusable system, if you don’t know how to do this then please speak to one of our local computer experts. On page 27 this month we have our usual Local History feature by Mike Laslett, if you are anything like me you will be astonished at the number of flint walls and houses you notice next time you are travelling through Rottingdean - one of those thing I never really looked for before! Society of Sussex Painters Sculptors and Engravers Forthcoming exhibition of work by artists from the SSPSE at the Grange Art Gallery Rottingdean September 10 - 22nd The Society consists of mainly professionally trained artists who are selling their work. We wish to encourage relevant work, which reflects the world we live in, and is innovative and original. We use our exhibitions as a show case for the exchange of ideas and we aim to facilitate the development of new work which can be traditional or contemporary. We welcome new members to apply for selection. All work must be of a high professional standard and integrity. To that end, since the start of the Society in 1924, it has always believed that drawing with competence and understanding should be evident in at least two pieces of finished work out of the six pieces which are brought to the selection meeting by prospective members. Former members of the Society have included such distinguished artists as Glynn Philpott, George Hooper, Charles Morris, Charles Knights, Dorothy Coke, Luther Roberts, Joseph di Guiseppe and Sam Fenton. Membership of the Society now stands at about thirty and we hold one or two exhibitions in different parts of Sussex each year. Our 90th anniversary exhibition at Worthing was a great success, appreciated by the many visitors, and especially by the Mayor of Worthing, Councillor Vic Walker. Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 72
Windows 10 “Bill Gates teaches us how to count to ten: 1, 2, 3, 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP, VISTA, 7, 8, 10” Yes, we have a new Windows operating system for our computers – but is it any good? Should we bother to update, and if we do, will it cause us any further issues, and is it really necessary? Here at Dolphin we always try out new operating systems, software and hardware before we recommend it (or advise against it) to our clients. We have mentioned before in this column the importance of keeping your computers updated to help keep your systems safe. But is upgrading to Windows 10 in the same category? So far we would conclude that it is better than Windows 8 and that the upgrade process has been straight forward for some people, but for others it has caused issues. There are still some reports of problems, at the time of this going to press Microsoft had issued
their third set of updates so it may be worth you holding off just a little while longer if you are unsure. Some of the issues that we have seen first-hand include computers rebooting, email ceasing to work and computer drivers not working. These glitches are not universal, they have only affected some people when they have upgraded. Ultimately we can report that Windows 10 is better than Windows 8 and it will be worth your while upgrading – as with the older Operating Systems, the more “out of date” they are the less secure they are, and ultimately they will cease to be supported by the producing companies. If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 but are still hesitant, remember that we are but a phone call away if you do get into difficulties.

Ovingdean gardening Club Ovingdean Gardening Club has been flourishing in the village for over 30 years. We now have over 75 members from all over the Deans catchment area. We are affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society which means, among other things, a free visit to Wisley every year. We meet on the first Thursday evening of every month and there are a variety of activities arranged including speakers on a wide range of topics, a plant auction, quiz night, festive meal and a bring a plate supper. The highlight of the year is the Annual Village Show. This year it will be held on Saturday 9 August. The Village hall is transformed by the huge variety of flowers, fruit and vegetables, hanging baskets, patio plants, flower arrangements, cookery and photography. Members of the public are very welcome from 2pm. There will be teas, coffee and home made cakes to enjoy, hopefully on the sun drenched patio. Members of the gardening club are encouraged to enter as many of the categories as they wish. It is a really fun event, competitive but friendly. The club also runs outings throughout the year. We have already been to Rushfields Plant Centre for a special evening presentation and Penshurst Place in
Kent this year. We had our annual trip to Wisley in July and in September will be going to Prairie Gardens near Henfield. If you are interested in joining or would like some more information, please visit our website at www.ovingdeangardening.webs.com or telephone Richard or Angie on 01273 303183. We look forward to hearing from you or seeing you at the show.

Osteopathy tips
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Sciatica - Low back pain Sciatica is a common type of pain caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve... Anatomy: The spine typically has 24 vertebrae; 7 neck, 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar. The vertebrae turn on facet joints, arched wing-like structures that stick out either side of the rear part of the vertebrae. They stop the vertebrae from bending and twisting too far and protect the spinal cord, the vital network of nerves running through the centre of each vertebra. Nerves exit the spine from the either side of spaces between two vertebral bodies, separated by an intervertebral disc. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, going from the pelvis, through the buttocks, down the legs to the feet. Intervertebral discs, complex fibro-cartilaginous structures that act as shock absorbers for daily activities separate the vertebrae. They are about 2.5cm in diameter and 5mm thick with a tough, fibrous outer membrane called the annulus fibrous, an elastic core inside called the nucleus pulposus and a cartilaginous endplate. The cells of these structures change as we age; starting as gel, fluid filled sacs in children and hardening to become less elastic and more prone to injury and degeneration with ageing producing pathological symptoms such as back pain and sciatica. Symptoms: Patients with chronic low back pain and sciatica, experience pain, burning, tingling or numbness radiating down their leg or foot due to compression or irritation of the lumbar nerve root. Pain is often worse when sitting and shooting pain can make it difficult to stand up; there can be pain in the buttock and weakness in the leg or foot. The reasons for this compression can be many and varied and the pain can be debilitating. Urgent medical attention is needed where there is loss of bladder or bowel control or progressive weakness in the lower limb. Causes: Spinal disc problems such as degeneration, herniation (the disc swells and bulges pressing on nerves) , prolapse (herniation of the nucleus pulposus) can be extremely painful and often need medical treatment. Stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal from osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis, a condition where one vertebra slips forward over another and corda equina all need medical attention. Rare causes can be cysts, epidural veins and tumours, but often there is no obvious cause. Less serious causes can relate to myofascial imbalances, muscle spasms, nerve root irritation, inflammation and postural / biomechanical changes, such as those in pregnancy. Diagnosis: Thorough neurological and orthopaedic evaluation is needed; X-rays, MRI and CT scans as well as nerve conduction tests can confirm diagnosis. Medical history is taken, reflexes are tested and examination of back, hips, legs for strength and flexibility. Treatment: Medical interventions include anti-inflammatory pain medication, epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks and surgery.
Studies are conflicting about which type of disc surgery is preferred, best timing of surgery and long term outcomes; your doctor will advise you based on a full diagnosis. Management: Studies are conflicting regarding preferred management. Manipulative therapy showed useful for back pain though not always for sciatica. Targeted exercise and stretching can be helpful; bed rest is not helpful and staying active and strong is important in the long term; though debilitating pain of acute sciatica can make it difficult to exercise. Acupuncture dry needling to specific muscles helped as did targeted deep soft tissue massage. Risk factors: Modifiable risk factors included smoking, obesity, occupational factors and health status. Non-modifiable factors included age, gender and social class. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute spinal check, without obligation. Local History - Part 40
Flints Mike Laslett
In the Deans you will notice that there is no local building stone present. Therefore timber houses were succeeded by homes built or faced with brick or flint. This was not the first time that man had used flint in this area, prehistoric man having long used flint for sharp tools such as axe heads, arrows and knives. The two main kinds of flint used for building are field flints and beach pebbles. As the names suggest, field flints are flints gathered from the surfaces of ploughed fields. They are irregular in size and shape and tend to have either a white or tan exterior, with a shiny black interior.
Carefully selected cobbles of similar size make a fine building, as seen here at Rose Cottage in Rottingdean High Street, while they are also used to good effect in the wall opposite.
Beach pebbles are flints that are collected from the beach. Generally known as cobbles, they started life as rugged field flints but became smooth and rounded in shape following erosion by the sea. Unprocessed field flints tended to be used for humbler construction, while smooth flint cobbles have been used from the 18th century for grander buildings. The first picture shows a collection of rough flints set in some attractive brickwork, while the second shows some more carefully selected flints of similar sizes.
Opposite St Margaret’s Church is the flint garden wall of the Elms, once home of Rudyard Kipling. Amongst the flints is a strange stone with a curious carved face, known locally as the wishing stone. Tradition says that if you touch its nose, make a wish and turn around three times, your wish will be granted. Unless your wish is to end your days under the wheels of a No. 2 bus, some care should be taken in this exercise!
Both kinds of flint can be split to expose more of the shiny black interior. The result is known as knapped flint and is generally found on higher status properties. It was particularly popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. On some of the grandest houses, the flint was knapped to form closely fitting 'squares' of flint, such as you may see at Court House and Down House. These flints have to be knapped so that the face is flat and exactly the right height to run the courses. The actual knapping is very labour intensive, making this the most costly style of flint work to produce.

Rottingdean Camera Club’s 40th Year We hold internal competitions, have 'battles' with other clubs, welcome visitors who present their own view of photography, and hold workshops. In addition we organise photoshoots. This year they were to Amberley Chalk Pits and Harvey's Brewery. Pictures are projected onto our large screen, and can thus look amazing. All designed to help members improve what they do photographically. From that stems much greater enjoyment of a wonderful hobby.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to all local photographers and would-be photographers to join the Rottingdean Camera Club. This year is a special year for us, it's our 40th anniversary, so perhaps this is just the right time for you to join us. Rottingdean Camera Club meets the first and third Mondays of the month, beginning on Oct 5th. at the Whiteway Centre, at 7.30pm. The aim of the Club is to enhance skills and improve the quality of the pictures we take, whilst enjoying a friendly and entertaining atmosphere. Those interested in joining are welcome to attend a couple of no-obligation meetings before you decide if it's where you want to be.

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a
hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions
Lion’s events The latest news from Rottingdean & saltdean Lions Our fund raising activities so far this year have been extremely successful. For example, the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Gala held on Saturday 18 July in the Saltdean Oval was one of the most successful in recent years. Over £4,100 was raised for local charities and community projects. The Gala was opened by actor Paul Moriarty and the prizes were awarded by the Brighton & Hove Mayor. A fun day was had by all. The events were well supported; in particular we had a record number of dogs enter the dog show. Unfortunately, my border collie Susie was in season and was unable to take part – next year perhaps. Service Donations Through our successful fundraising activities we now have funds to donate where needed to various groups in the local community. As well as local charities and community projects, we aim to support individual residents where appropriate. Therefore, we are trying to target individuals with particular needs. Please make contact if you, or anyone you know, may need the kind of support which the Lions might be able to offer. Please see our contact details below.
Community projects, of which the principal beneficiary again this year will be Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Teams swim for one hour with the aim of swimming as many lengths as possible. In the past we have had teams from local pubs, schools, scouts and girl guide/brownie groups and even solo swimmers - all are most welcome. Every team is a winner in this marvelous fundraising event. Please make contact soon if you would like to enter a team. The Lions Writing Competition Building on the success of the sales of Pagan Justice, a crime thriller novel written by Jags Arthurson, with all proceeds going to Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions, we will be launching a new creative writing competition shortly – please watch this space. If you would like more information on any of the above activities, to book a team for the Sponsored Swim or to make contact with regard to donations to individuals in need in our local community please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk.
Presentation to Autism Sussex, 22ⁿ July The Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions recently had the pleasure of presenting a cheque to the value of £500 to Autism Sussex the main beneficiary of our recent Deans Charity Challenge Walk/Run fundraising event. Afterwards the Lion President Alistair Lang and colleagues had a brief tour of their facilities in Kemptown. They are currently constructing new sensory facilities and they hope to use our donation to realise this welcome resource earlier than they had originally expected. The Lions Sponsored Swim, Roedean School, 11 October Invitations have recently been sent out for our popular Swimathon. On 11 October our popular Sponsored Swim at Roedean School Pool will be held. The swim is held annually to raise money for local charities. Groups, through entered teams, raise funds by obtaining sponsorship with the proceeds being split between their own group or charity and Lions’

Local News & Views
A writer’s room with a view Brighton Five Deans U3A Local Author Jane Owen kindly shares with us her views across Saltdean. It was the views that drew me to Saltdean but finding the house with the perfect view took ten months. It was worth it. The view from my desk, looking south across the sea from the top of one the highest hills is an everchanging masterpiece. Whether I’m watching storm clouds racing across a sea so dark it’s almost black or the triangular white sails of little boats bobbing around on sparkling blue summer waters, I’m always watching something. On a clear day, I can see the supertankers sliding along the horizon on their way to and from all four corners of the world. On not so clear days, I can watch the fog rolling in like an eerie, slow motion tidal wave, covering Saltdean street by street until I can’t even see the house over the road. Spring is marked by the sudden appearance of blobs of bright yellow forsythia bursting into bloom in every back garden; summer brings a full moon over the sea and a path of silvery light heading across the Channel which for some reason puts me in mind of pirates and smugglers, ghostly galleons and caves full of contraband. Autumn gales whip up the waves before hurtling onto land to strip the trees of their leaves and reveal houses that have been hidden since May. Christmas brings the sudden and festive addition of all manner of twinkling coloured lights and a sudden blanket of white snow can turn Saltdean into a painting by Lowry with tiny matchstick men, women and children all rushing to the park with their toboggans. Right now, the sea is a silver mirror reflecting the palest of grey skies but that may all change by tea time and therein lies the problem: how’s a writer supposed to get any work done at all when there’s a view like this to be stared at? Jane Owen's new novel, Caballo, is available now from Amazon.
Thursday September 10th our enrolment day for the Brighton Five Deans U3A. Come and join us at St Nicholas Church Hall, Saltdean Vale. 2.15 for 2.30. We guarantee a warm welcome, and a chance to join in our wide ranging activities. We offer a weekly keep fit class, carefully tailored to our age group. Tai Chi as well, the walking group offers regular organised walks that aren't too challenging. Our luncheon club meets regularly to enjoy lunch and a chance to make new friends. We have a wealth of groups for playing games. Scrabble, Cribbage, Bridge, and Mah Jong. Ten Pin Bowling too. Our gardening group might be just what you need to inspire you to put those gardening gloves on. We have groups for poetry, a book group and an art discussion group, Sussex History and science are covered too. Do you enjoy a glass of wine but wish you knew more about it? Then perhaps you might like our wine appreciation group. We have a range of occasional days out which are very popular, and our travel group can inspire you to visit new places. Do come and join us. Most of all, we offer friendship and company, a chance to keep active for longer and to learn a bit more about that subject you always wanted to know about. If the group you would like to join isn't yet listed, then we'll help you start it. For more information phone Eileen on 01273 300274, visit our website at www.fivedeansu3a.org.uk or just turn up to one of our meetings.
From Elf to Elfin Thinking of her ‘elf’ Lis loses 4 stone 4 pounds over 12 months! Lis felt sluggish, very tired and would often nap. She couldn’t find clothes that were comfortable and felt miserable at the lack of choice in shops. Late December 2013 there was a leaflet arrived advertising the new Slimming World group that was starting on the 31. “I had enough present money to start 12 weeks of giving it a go and thought that New Years Eve would be a great time to start”. When Lis walked through the door she got such a warm welcome, it took her aback because she thought that it would be all about the scales. It wasn’t! It was a place of laughter, sharing and learning, and also that lots of great food could be eaten and still lose weight! “The idea that I could eat lots and lose lots of weight was like a dream come true, I don’t like to feel like I am depriving myself!” Lis decided to see if she could lose a stone, she discovered that she could lose more and by December 2014 had shrunk down by 4 stones and 4 pounds! Lis used to treat herself to a sausage roll, washed down with a half litre of Coke but now she loves to reheat one of her favourite Slimming World recipes Vegetable Tagine, washed down with sparkling mineral water. She has much more energy and those naps are gone. She says that people don’t recognise her, after many years of being size 18/20 and now being a size 10!
Losing the weight has really helped Lis to be much more confident. She loves going into clothes shops and being able to buy clothes that she feels, and looks good in. Lis has now trained to be a Slimming World consultant and will be starting her own group: every Wednesday from September 9 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church Hall, Steyning Avenue, Rottingdean at 7.30 pm. “I really want to help others to achieve what I have, by being supported and never going hungry!” For more details: 07866469402
