Welcome

Welcome to the July Edition… Hello again and welcome to my favourite month of the year. Why you may be asking? Simply because it is Tour De France month, of course we have the Olympics as well, but The Tour is an annual tradition in our house, and as such we watch the whole thing, still hoping for that elusive overall British victory. This said there is a whole lot more to look forward to in the summer - holidays, events and for our younger readers - no school for 6 weeks! The Deans magazine website is once again live, a much more humble effort than last year’s very ambitious design, it still has the online version of the magazine for the current month, as well as earlier editions. Find us at www.deansmagazine.co.uk Enjoy the summer and remember if you see the sun get out and enjoy it, who knows how long it will be shining! There is no shortage of things to do and see in The Deans. Keith - Editor

Annabel Glauser Heart of the Rose
Art has always been my first love, and, although I studied French at university after leaving school, and worked for several years in television in London, I returned to the world of art in my late twenties. I studied part-time, first at Chelsea College of Art & Design (BTEC/Fine Art Portfolio Development) and then at Central Saint Martin’s (Certificate of Higher Education in Fine Art). Whilst studying at CSM, I also worked four days a week in a central London gallery, so in a sense I was learning about the art world from two different perspectives. I initially specialised in Sculpture, but became very interested in photography, through the process of photographing my works. When I returned to live on the South Coast a few years later, I made it my goal to learn the technical skills behind photography. In 2008, I acquired a second-hand digital SLR camera and joined the Brighton & Hove Camera Club, which I attended for a couple of years. In 2010, I completed an NCFE Certificate in Photography at City College, taking part in the end of year show at the Connaught Centre in Hove. That Summer, I also exhibited a selection of my photographs at the Open Art Gallery Café in Rottingdean. I’ve recently been experimenting with macro photography, which has opened up new creative possibilities. I enjoy photographing nature, creating simple and, I hope, beautiful images. Of course, the

idea of ‘beauty’ is subjective, but I know what I am instinctively drawn to, and I prefer to make images which are, for me, uplifting rather than confrontational. I’m inspired by the landscape, by flowers and plants, interesting light patterns and the effect of light on water. The majority of my images are in colour, as colour is very important to me in the way that it creates mood and feeling in my work, but I have recently started experimenting with monochrome. I like desaturating images, while at the same time retaining colour in selected areas. It’s very effective and using Photoshop as a creative tool can be great fun. A selection of my images are currently available as photo-cards at Arty phArty Studios & Art Shop, 8 Nevill Road, Rottingdean.

Small business Security Being small means you're off the radar as far as hackers are concerned - doesn't it? After all, why would they bother with you? You don't need to bother with all sorts of fancy security measures now do you? Pick this theory up and turn it on its head, then you're looking at the truth. Whilst there may be glory hunting hackers out there who are after a real challenge, this is like assuming that all thieves are only after the crown jewels and wouldn't bother breaking into your little house. Hackers are much more likely to target small businesses as they know they will be far easier to access. The larger the company, the larger the IT budget, the better the security measures. So what have you got to lose? No, seriously, what have you got to lose? It's worth you sitting back and thinking about the consequences of your systems being breached - what would a hacker have access to?
Your emails? Your client’s details? Your files? Your bank accounts - whoa, hang on here....whilst all of this is dire, let’s stop at bank accounts for a moment. Did you know that business bank accounts don't have the same kind of liability protection as do consumers? That's right, if a hacker gets into you business bank account they can clear it out and leave you with nobody to blame but yourself. Just because you are a small business doesn't mean that it will be difficult for hackers to find you - they use automated tools to seek out security holes so there is a stronger chance that they will find you than that they won't. We are more than happy to discuss your IT security with you and will be able to provide you with all the solutions that you need. In the meantime we wish you, as always, continued happy and safe computing.

Saltdean Lido news update
11 43
Saltdean Lido - latest news The last week of May was certainly one on which the residents of Saltdean will look back with delight. Once again, the sun shone on the Campaign's second Fun Day and whilst we had promised "bigger and better" the general view appears to be that it exceeded all expectations. In fact, it seemed, looking at the thousands of people taking part in the various activities or enjoying the entertainment, that the entire population of the Deans had descended upon the park to have fun. Much of the credit has to go to our army of wonderful volunteers and to the local businesses and organisations who so generously supported the event. There is a slideshow of wonderful photographs from both the day and evening events on our website www.saltdeanlidocampaign.org Only days later came the historic moment for which we'd been waiting so impatiently, when Council's Policy & Resources Committee approved the agreement to recover the lease of the Lido. The site is now back in the hands of Brighton & Hove City Council and they expect to have
come to a decision about its future management by the end of this year. We have always believed that the best way of ensuring the long-term safety of the site is for the Lido to be run by the community and to that end, we are recruiting Directors for the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company - a social enterprise which would see profits reinvested in the site. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who feels they would like to get involved as a Director (unpaid voluntary positions, similar to the Trustees of a charity). Whilst we are particularly looking for people with relevant skills or experience, we would still like to hear from you if you share our passion for this wonderful building and our commitment to providing modern, vibrant community facilities. For further information and job descriptions please email saltdeanlidocampaign@googlemail.com or call Rebecca on 01273 307010 for an informal chat.
Lido Nights - May Live music at Saltdean Community Centre May 19 saw the recently formed 80s tribute band “Epic 80s” at the Lido playing one of their first ever live gigs Ahh the 80’s. I remember them well. If like me this period covered your youthful “pubbing and night clubbing years” you will have fond memories of sporting some shockingly dodgy clothes, wearing equally ridiculous haircuts, owning a mobile phone the size of a housebrick (with no reception) and not being able to get a drink anywhere after 11pm except in a nightclub! And God forbid you should try and get into that nightclub wearing jeans or a shirt without a collar! The music however was great. A real diversity of bands and sounds as new music technology properly kicked in. What a treat then to have the terrific 80s tribute band “Epic 80’s” grace the stage of the lido in May. This is the first time I have seen a band replicate so competently the sound and feel of those 80’s songs. “Epic 80’s” want to get people dancing, so much of their material is a mixture of soul, funk, dance grooves and club anthems from

that era. Think Luther Vandross, Shalamar, Fatback Band, The Jacksons and you will get the musical picture. Two top quality vocalists front the band, Jason Laroche and Lauren Rodbard. For male vocalists 80’s songs are in notoriously high keys (they didn’t used to wear those tight trousers for nothing!) but Jason hit those notes effortlessly and in the lovely Lauren I think we have a bit of a star. She has a natural stage presence that you can’t buy or teach and a great voice to back it up. The harmonies and blend of voices were also spot on. Add to this a bass and drums rhythm section that was as tight as a pair of those 80’s trousers, a very cool looking guitarist plus some quite brilliant keyboard work by Darren Soffe and you have a band that will very soon be commanding top dollar on the corporate circuit. Just remember you saw them first at Lido Nights!

A Room Full of Bones Saltdean library book Launch for local author - Thursday 10th May 2012. A little while ago I came across Domenica de Rosa walking along the sea front at Saltdean, with a friend. We waved and briefly smiled at each other; comparing notes at her latest book launch at Saltdean library, Domenica told me she had been returning from the beach that had helped to inspire an important location in her book House at Sea’s End written under the pseudonym of Elly Griffiths. Following on from this book Elly Griffiths has just had published, her fourth book in the series depicting the investigations of Doctor Ruth Galloway the intrepid forensic archaeologist, often shortened to Doctor Ruth by US readers. A Room Full of Bones begins with the mysterious death of a museum’s curator. Threatening demands for the return of a collection of indigenous Australian bones housed at the museum are followed by the death of its aristocratic owner; this proves to be just the beginning of the sinister and surreal turns ahead. Saltdean Scribblers, a local creative writing group, hosted the launch of this book at the Saltdean library to celebrate the success of a local author as one of their own. Elly Griffiths has lived in Saltdean since the age of five, except for a break when she was at university in London, and often joins the Scribblers for writing exercises and general chats on the writing process. The strong connection and affection between the local writers was manifest that evening.
Robert Upward from the Scribblers welcomed Elly Griffiths as she went on to introduce her new book and read an extract. We learnt that the Booth museum in Hove provided inspiration for the book along with her archaeologist husband. Absorbing the packed library with Doctor Ruth’s first encounter with the ill fated museum of the plot it was clear our hero was going into new territory and the listeners wanted more. After the reading early paperback copies of her book were available with donations going to Project Antifreeze a charity that offers spiritual, practical and emotional support to anyone in need on the streets of Brighton and Hove. It was a special evening for Elly Griffiths: her husband, children and sister were there making it a truly family affair along with her extended family, Saltdean. Saltdean Scribbler, Roger Bluff.

Roedean Cafe review
By Matt Ebeling Readers of the Deans Magazine with good memories will remember when we did a review of the Roedean Cafe a few years ago, are they still providing good service? Deans resident - Matt Ebeling - shares his experience. I was working a late shift the other Friday, and my wife suggested that we went out for a late breakfast. “But it’s lunch time,” I pointed out, thinking that everywhere locally stops serving breakfast at 11am. Not so, the Roedean Café. With its own traffic lights and an enormous free car park for customers (café and golf), the Roedean Café sits overlooking the sea and Brighton Marina. We decided it was too breezy to sit outside and opted for a booth by the window. The sunshine afforded us a great view of the Marina. An outside table would have allowed us to look at the golfers and Roedean School, where the pupils walk the corridors of girl power. My wife ordered the set breakfast and I plumped for the Roedean Special. With a price tag of over £7, the Special is not a cheap option. On the other hand, for your money, you get two fried eggs, two sausages, two rashers of bacon, two slices of toast, two hash browns, two tomato halves, baked beans and a cup
of tea, made fresh in a pot. The set breakfast is half of the Special (no tea included) and costs under £5. We sat for only a few minutes before the breakfasts arrived. We swapped some of my baked beans for my wife’s tomato half and then we settled down to eating. The quality of the Roedean Specials easily matches its quantity and filled me up for most of the remainder of the day. Our fellow customers, a golfer, a couple of young families, two men talking business and a number of retired folk seemed to be enjoying their meals as much as we did. They could read the newspapers available to customers or look at the photographs of celebrities who have availed themselves of the Roedean experience. Would we go again? Would I have the Roedean Special again? Absolutely ‘yes’, on both counts. Matt Ebeling

Successful Letting
Successful Renting 15 with Denise Whittington of Lets Go
Weathering the Storm The sales and lettings markets seem to be especially changeable at the moment, a bit like the weather: sunshine one minute, floods and gale force winds the next. The general trend in our area in the past few months has been that there have been fewer properties on the market to rent, whilst the number of properties for sale has increased. Many sellers seem to be ‘testing the market’. For some this has not resulted in the sale they had hoped for, and they are now looking at the rental market for a solution. Continuing financial uncertainty has meant that people have had to be more imaginative and flexible, and responsive to market trends. The sales process does not always go smoothly and with the best will in the world you cannot control what will happen especially if you are in a chain of buyers and sellers. Sales can, and do fall through. This can leave you in a difficult situation if you have completed on a purchase but the buyer for your property has pulled out.
short to medium term solution whilst long term decisions are being made. At Lets Go we understand how difficult it can be to make decisions, especially if you have found yourself in unexpected circumstances, and need advice……….. If you need help and advice to make a decision about renting out your property and would like to have a chat with Denise visit Lets Go at 59 High Street, Rottingdean, Brighton, ‘phone 01273 236547 or email to: denise@letsgoproperty.co.uk. Denise Whittington (B.A) is Director of Lets Go Lettings & Property management specialists, established in 1997. She has lived and worked in the local area for many years. See Denise’s profile on LinkedIn. Copyright: Lets Go June 2012
One option is to rent out the property you have bought, to provide an income whilst you look for another buyer for the property you want to sell. Short lets of 6 months or less are becoming more popular as a flexible alternative to long term renting. Alternatively you can move in to the property you have bought as planned, and rent out the one you have been trying to sell. And your tenant may be willing to agree to the property still being marketed for sale, especially if they have been in a similar situation themselves. Letting out your property to provide an income continues to be an option in the short to medium term for those whose life circumstances have changed but who do not want to sell at the moment, and can provide a ‘breathing space’ before longer term decisions are made. For example, when a remaining parent becomes ill and can no longer live in their own home, rental income can contribute to care fees. Decisions on the future of the property can be made one step at a time, and when all concerned are feeling stronger emotionally. Sometimes we have to just ‘wait and see’ what happens over time. Relationship breakdown is another life changing circumstance where letting out the marital home can provide a

Local History with Mike Laslett
Local History - Part 5 .
Sir Edward Burne – Jones’ seaside retreat
Mike Laslett
Burne – Jones, William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti were leading members of the Pre – Raphaelite movement, so called because they considered anything painted since Raphael to be lacking. Their models were usually beautiful working class girls, whom they courted or even married. Most famous for his stained glass and for his intricate paintings of mediaeval subjects, Burne –Jones was the humble son of a Birmingham picture framer who became so successful that he was the first artist to have a memorial service in Westminster Abbey. Though his 1898 memorial service took place at Westminster Abbey, his ashes are buried in Rottingdean churchyard, a fact commemorated by a memorial to the south of the church door. Sir Edward and his wife Georgiana lived in Fulham and in 1880 they chose a seaside retreat on The Green at Rottingdean, purchasing Prospect Cottage and Aubrey Cottage. A blue plaque is on the former. These two properties became known as North End House. His much loved daughter Margaret was married in St Margaret’s Church in 1888, for which occasion he
designed and donated seven stained glass windows to the church, including one of St. Margaret. He was often visited by his granddaughter, Angela Thirkell, who wrote many books including National Velvet and The Chalk Garden. A subsequent purchaser of the property, Sir Roderick Jones, also acquired the Gothic House to the north but the three houses are once again separate cottages, the northern one alone now bearing the name North End House. Note its black mathematical tiles which were often used to make an old timber building appear like an expensive, new, brick built one. Sir Roderick’s wife was the author Enid Bagnold, who wrote “National Velvet.”
