Welcome

3

Welcome to the June Edition… And a “warm” welcome to the sun, which has made its return, hopefully intending to stay around long enough to ensure the success of the Jubilee festivities. I well remember the parties we had back in 1977 for the Silver Jubilee, so it is nice to see that the community spirit we had back then is still alive and well today. This is another feature packed edition, with a Cinema exclusive, tips for the perfect wedding, and a very welcome return to Mike Laslett and his popular local history article. I always find it fascinating to learn about the history of this area, why things look like they do today, and who put them there in the first place. In addition we have news of a very exciting event from Rottingdean Preservation Society - see page 55 - all this and more, appears in this this edition, so if the weather does take a turn for the worse at least you will have some decent reading to do! Keith - Editor

Artist of the month

7

Catrin Edwards-Jones Catrin Edwards-Jones studied Portraiture at Brighton College of Art and later furthered her training there in Textile Art. Before opening her Cornish Studio in St Ives, she founded the ‘Sussex Quilters’ based in Brighton; a television programme was to follow, explaining the quilting and appliqué methods used by the members. Catrin having moved to Cornwall, taught Textile Art at Truro College and the St Ives School of Painting, where she set up another smaller quilting group, the St Ives Quilters - prior to returning to Brighton in the 90’s to be near her family. Since returning to Brighton, Catrin’s art work has become very diverse - with her sculptured portraits of the family, grand children and friends in terracotta, and various interpretations of Brighton Marina and the Sussex Coastline - worked in oils, watercolours, stained glass and ‘textile’ art. Coastal scenes have also been hand painted in watercolours on lampshades. Catrin has always been inspired by the Impressionists and the use of light in their Art. Over the last two years, Catrin’s time has been occupied writing a Social History book, under the title ‘New Quay (Wales) Remembered’ - recalling life in a small fishing village situated on the coast of Cardigan

Bay - from 1932 to1948, as remembered by a four year old growing into womanhood. This is at present in a Brighton Publisher’s hands. Catrin’s work has been seen and commissioned at the Chelsea Craft Fair, Liberty & Co., Harvey Nichols, Heals & Co., with exhibitions at London’s Foyles and in the U.S.A. Having returned to Brighton from Cornwall in 1996, Catrin has participated in the Brighton Festival and has opened her studio to the general public, including her adjoining ‘ Lutyens’ Sunken Garden’ (now restored to how it was in the 1920’s.) Her ‘Open Days’ have been a great success with the participation of her artistic friends and her son Huw Edwards-Jones, a designer/cabinet maker, featured last month in Deans magazine. Huw can be contacted on 07835 094508 www.huwedwardsjones-bespoke.co.uk Catrin’s work can be located on www.Catrinstudio.co.uk and she can be contacted on cedwardsjones@tiscali

JAJU BEANS & LEAVES Discover the pleasures of gourmet coffee and tea – it’s a luxury we can ALL afford Coffee and tea are the world’s two most popular beverages and possibly the most widely consumed aside from water. Neither is just a beverage however, affording comforting moments of pleasure and ritual delivered through flavour and aroma whilst providing an energising lift, invariably associated with caffeine. But coffee and tea are so much more than a caffeine fix. They are complex and characterful and as deserving of the respect bestowed on wine - rarely do we purchase a bottle of red without first reading the label or buying it because it is the cheapest on offer. At our shop in Rottingdean we want our customers to discover the pleasures of gourmet coffee and tea and to enjoy them at home. Our aim is to provide some of the best. With the expertise of an artisan roaster we offer a wide range of speciality coffee, ethically sourced from specific farms, estates and co-operatives from around the world, along with an excellent selection of fine leaf teas, sourced through member organisations of the Ethical

Tea Partnership. In addition we stock a variety of coffee and tea making homeware and accessories for brewing the perfect cup. Lido Nights - April Live music at Saltdean Community Centre Good weather and live music evenings at Saltdean Community Centre never seem to go in hand in hand this year and April’s gig proved to be no exception! With a shocking storm taking grip and an official Met office weather warning to boot, I wondered how this would affect the turnout for the Big Wheels Motown Review Show. I needn’t have been concerned as the place was absolutely heaving. I really think that if a Tsunami hit the South Coast on Lido night, the good people of Saltdean would turnout in snorkels and flippers so not to miss out! Certainly the Big Wheels show is not something you want to miss. As usual this very professional band 9 piece were absolutely spot on musically and visually. On this occasion I noticed the bands regular drummer and bass player were absent. Full credit to their deputees as didn’t miss a beat or a note all night ; I don’t know how old the bass player is but he looks like he should have been at home revising for his GCSE’s !

Shauna Parker as one of the singers. Shauna performed her excellent tribute to Patsy Cline here recently so hats off to her for a seamless change of direction. The songs, the band ,the girls were all fabulous , the weather was…. well, unfabulous ; but who the hell cares – it was dry inside and it was Lido Night! LIDO NIGHTS IS RUN BY THE SALTDEAN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION.

The three girl singers are certainly the main feature of Big Wheels. Their harmonies are great and all shared lead vocals, although ‘local gal’ Juliet Golding takes on the bulk of the lead work. Juliet’s versatile vocal chords means she can sing the phone book and make it sound interesting and the observant in the audience will have noticed If you have a local article to publish email editorial@deansmagazine.co.uk

WHAT ARE COOKIES? Cookies (not the scrumptious ones) have been around in IT for a while, but have recently been top of the news again. At the end of May a new data protection law came into force which requires all websites to obtain users' opt-in consent before they install cookies. And all non-compliant websites may be subject to a fine. What does this have to do with you? You may have noticed that you’ve been asked to give your permission for a website or a company to use cookies – but what are we talking about here? What are cookies? A cookie will “record” what you’re looking at and will take note of various things that you do whilst on that web page. The site then knows that you have been there before, and in some cases will select what you first see on the screen. Cookies aren’t “saved” on each website that you visit – should you visit (without adding log in details) the same website but from a different machine it won’t know who you are or where you’ve looked. Cookies are downloaded onto your PC. When you return to the same site, your computer or laptop will check

to see if it has a cookie that is relevant and it then relays information back to the site. Are cookies bad for you then? Not always. There have always been ways of opting out; the law has just been changed so that you have to opt in. Without cookies, shopping online would be a lot more difficult – they are used, for example, for storing the information when you add items to your “shopping cart”; and rather than you having to trawl through larger sites looking at irrelevant things, they will guide you to where you want to be. If you would like any further clarification on this, then please do get in touch. In the meantime we wish you, as always, continued happy and safe computing.

Saltdean Cinema

Saltdean Cinema Exclusive Big screen scoop! Cinema Saltdean , the community cinema, has an exclusive on 3oth June by being the first cinema in the region to screen the new Sean Bean film ‘Cleanskin’. There is more! There will be an opportunity to chat with the Director, writer and Producer of the film, Hadi Hajaig; and Jenny Ray, the Art Director, at the screening. “This is a perfect opportunity to bring an exciting new film to our local audience. ‘Cleanskin’ wasn’t shown in the big cinemas around Brighton. The Brighton cinemas really missed out on this one: I travelled to Crawley to see it. It’s a great film and we are thrilled to have it for our local cinema,” said one of the Cinema Saltdean organisers. “Having the Director and Art Director present at the screening is a real exclusive and will give anyone who is interested in the making of a feature film the opportunity to get some real industry stories from the professionals,” he added. There is local interest too, in that the Art Director is a Saltdean born and bred film professional. After studying film at Kingston University, Jenny Ray went on to work with Ridley Scott and Madonna, so she has plenty of real experience to talk about. Set in London ‘Cleanskin’ is a terrorist thriller, written, produced and directed by Hadi Hajaig. Sean Bean is on top form, the film is exciting and has many twists and turns to the plot. See the trailer at: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1598873/

Cinema Saltdean is based at St Nicholas Church Hall, Saltdean Vale: established over a year ago, it shows up-to-date films each month. “The cinema has really caught on and provides a much-needed venue for entertainment here in Saltdean,” said one of the organisers. “It is firmly established as a good local night out with friends and has a good community atmosphere, as well as giving filmgoers an opportunity to catch up with newly released films at prices below those of the multiplexes”. One of the regular customers said “The cinema is great asset for the community here and £5.50 is a reasonable price to pay for a good night out with friends and without having to catch a bus in to Brighton – it has such a nice atmosphere and you can get a glass of wine, a cup of tea or an ice cream in the intermission”. Tickets for this one-off event will be in demand; there are three local box offices in and around Saltdean; or you can buy tickets online at www.cinemacinema.com Tickets will go on sale at £5.50 on 15 May - but hurry! The venue is a limited to 140 seats.

Insoles A hidden weapon in the shoes to fight pain Patients often ask us at the Pain Solutions Clinic if they have flat feet. Although very few people have completely fallen arches a large proportion of the population have a reduced arch height, particularly when they are standing up and walking. Left untreated fallen arches or over-pronation can cause stress to the bones and joints of the feet and ankle leading to a host of painful conditions. Overpronation causes the ankle to roll inwards on weight bearing. It also affects the gait causing a rotation of the leg bones when walking which can lead to ankle, knee, hip and back pain. During an initial examination, osteopaths regularly find that patients have one leg slightly longer than the other. This can be caused by a pelvic imbalance or a difference in length of either the tibia or femur bones in the leg. A common problem that arises from this is plantar fasciitis – inflammation of the connective tissue of the soles of the feet resulting in heel or arch pain. Many people find their feet get more sensitive as they get older. Often this is due to a reduction in the thickness of the shock absorbing fat pads we all have on the soles of our feet, located between the skin and metatarsal bones.

Insoles, or orthotics, can be a powerful treatment tool in helping to alleviate or manage these troublesome conditions. They work by stabilising the heel and arch during walking so preventing excessive ankle rolling. During fitting, height adjusters can be added to the insoles to resolve any leg length differences. There are a large range of insoles to choose from and it is best to get professional advice before buying. Off the peg orthotics are ideal for the majority of people as they combine comfort, support and flexibility without breaking the bank. They can usually be worn with normal footwear as they are thin and light. Bespoke orthotics may be necessary for a small number of people. Peter Alexander - Pain Solutions

First & Foremost Entertainment

Saltdean based Entertainment Agency First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd lift the lid once again on the “backstage” aspects of arranging entertainment, and with this year’s Wedding Season about to get into full swing, offer advice for those brides and grooms who still need quality entertainment options for their Big Day. Aside from the venue, the dress and the cake, the one thing that guests will always remember and comment upon is the quality and range of entertainment provided at your wedding. Therefore, to guarantee that everything is top notch, always book professional acts and artists. In the past, “wedding entertainment” simply meant having a DJ at the reception. Now, in addition, couples are choosing harpists, opera singers, bagpipers, magicians, caricaturists, bands, wedding singers, children’s entertainers to keep the little ones occupied and even spectacular firework displays to end their day in style. Others, who like things a little less traditional, opt for speciality and circus acts, or even themed entertainments. Ask family and friends for recommendations or alternatively, use the services of a reputable entertainment agency or consultancy, who can arrange everything for you. These companies, such as First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd, have a wealth of knowledge built up over many years, supply quality assured performers and offer free, no obligation advice. In essence they are a “one stop shop” and a welcome safety net, ensuring that costly mistakes are not made. Remain realistic in terms of budget. A professional entertainer has as much right to a reasonable fee as does your photographer, florist or cake maker. Remember that you are paying for the years of experience, training and dedication that the act or artist has invested in bringing you the best in their particular field.

If you are arranging performers yourself, always ask for act timings, discuss the age range and number of your guests with the performer and ensure that all quotations are fully inclusive. Finally, make certain that all your entertainers carry Public Liability Insurance and are CRB checked if applicable. Following these simple rules will ensure that both you and your guests can sit back, relax and have a truly magical time celebrating your Special Day by enjoying top quality entertainment. Cheeky Monkeys with Marco Fortis

Collectables A brief history of playground collectables, including the latest - Moshi Monsters. Since I have expanded my pocket lines in Cheeky Monkeys I have seen a new kind of customer. This is the child who knows exactly what they want. They can come into the shop and make their own purchase with their own money. They feel of a few bags and hand over a couple of coins. They leave in a fit of excitement as the mystery of what character they have just added to their collection plays on their mind. Collectables amongst children is nothing new. From the tobacco cards of the 1860’s to the countless blind bags on offer today, children have always wanted a series to complete. Over the course of the Twentieth Century more companies included trading cards with their products. And it worked. I remember nagging my mum to get a certain brand of tea because I needed to get all of the cards about a family of chimpanzees. Towards the end of the century toy companies tapped into this psyche.

To this day I am proud of my Pog collection and its high number of ‘Shinies’. Over the last twenty years more weird and wonderful series have come and gone only to be replaced with the next big thing. Ask any school child and they will tell you that Moshi Monsters are the current playground favourites, and they are showing no sign of slowing down. Even their album is in the charts. I can’t help but wonder what the pocket money collectable world will give us next. Keep an eye on Cheeky Monkeys, we are on the lookout.

At school I remember the crazes of the playground as new toys came into fashion. Groups would form at break time and the day’s trading would start as we all tried to complete the collection and get those ‘rare’ characters.

Sesame is one of the oldest oilseed crops, which was domesticated well over 5000 years ago. It is a survivor crop and very drought tolerant. They will all be there at the Saltdean Community Centre on Saturday 23 June from 11am to 3pm. On Saturday June 23rd in the Saltdean Community Centre, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. the Saltdean, Rottingdean and Ovingdean Neighbourhood Watch are holding a special event entitled 'Security and Safety in the Community'. This event is in support of the National NHW Week running over the period 16th to 24th June. Please come along and you will have the opportunity to speak to experts on a wide range of security items to make your home more secure, as well as safety aspects from the professionals like East Sussex Fire and Rescue. Have you been thinking of installing an alarm system? Purchasing a safe to keep those valuable papers etc in? Putting locks on the shed door? Installing smoke alarms? Property marking your valuables? Installing a security light in the garden? Or perhaps you would like to talk about the security and safety measures you already take and check all is well? Come along and visit and meet representatives from many local companies advising on burglar alarms, locks, security lighting, safes, peep holes, CCTV cameras, door chains and much more.

There will also be advice from Crimestoppers, Smart Water, Trading Standards, East Sussex Fire and Rescue, and Sussex Police who will be bringing marking equipment for bikes, scooters and small tools. If you are not yet a member of Neighbourhood Watch and want to join we can always help and give you advice on our own scheme or others in the area. This is an opportunity to check and improve your security and to find out ways of keeping your property and your family safe. Local History with Mike Laslett

Local History - Part 4 Roedean Mike Laslett

Roedean is famous the world over for the Girls’ School standing on the cliffs between Black Rock and Rottingdean. The school was started in Sussex Square in 1885 by three of the eight Lawrence sisters. After moving to various locations in Kemp Town the school was opened on the present site in 1899. A tunnel leads to the beach. The school was evacuated to Keswick in the Lake District during the war. This was because the site was requisitioned for military purposes including a naval Torpedo and Mine Training School through which over 30,000 officers passed. As a result of this, Roedean is perhaps the only girls’ school in the country to have an Old Boys’ Association! Today the school incorporates a 320-seat theatre, a heated indoor swimming pool, a chapel and many other facilities. Current school fees exceed £10,000 per term. Sir John Howard, an engineer and philanthropist, was responsible for the opening of the Palace Pier in 1899. At the western end of Roedean Road lies John Howard House, provided by him as a convalescent home for gentlewomen. It is now in use as a Steiner School. In 1922 Sir John added 24 cottages on land east of the main house for the use of retired nurses. St Mark’s school stood on the opposite side of Roedean Road. Its distinctive feature was the school’s bell tower

which has been preserved and lends its name to Bell Tower industrial estate The gasholders on the adjoining site no longer rise and fall but do provide roost for starlings. Gas works were normally situated on the eastern boundary of a town since if they were situated on the western side the prevailing south-westerly winds would waft the smells across the town. N B: Thank you to all those who spotted the April edition error. The barn in the photo was Saltdean Barn, not Looes Barn.

Enid Bagnold Talk – A Writer’s Life With Hugo Vickers and Michael Thornton Two bestselling authors who knew the great novelist and playwright Enid Bagnold CBE well, are to appear on stage at Rottingdean Village Hall at 3.30pm on Saturday, July 21. MICHAEL THORNTON, one of Britain’s leading national newspaper journalists, who went to school in Rottingdean, wrote an article in the Daily Telegraph on April 28 about Miss Bagnold’s strong influence on his childhood and early career during a friendship lasting 33 years. With her encouragement, he went on to become London’s youngest national film and theatre critic at the age of 23, and the author of bestselling biographies of the actress Jessie Matthews, and of the Queen Mother and the Duchess of Windsor. Mr. Thornton will introduce the acclaimed broadcaster, historian and biographer HUGO VICKERS, author of the official life of Sir Cecil Beaton, and of biographies of Vivien Leigh, the Queen Mother, and many other successful books. Mr. Vickers, who is also the Queen’s Deputy Lieutenant for Berkshire, knew and visited Enid Bagnold at her Rottingdean home, North End House, in the closing years of her life. He will discuss her vivid personality, her life, and the lasting importance of her work as the author of novels like National Velvet and plays like The Chalk Garden. For more information on Hugo Vickers visit www.hugovickers.co.uk This much anticipated talk on Enid Bagnold’s incredible life is being presented in conjunction with the newly installed Enid Bagnold Exhibition at Rottingdean Museum which runs until August 4 2012. Steve & Jill Emery Painting & decorating, property maintenance and acting! Long time Deans advertiser - Steve Emery tells us about his family’s love of acting, what they have done so far and their upcoming shows. When it comes to treading the boards there’s nothing more that Steve likes to do best, whether its balancing on the scaffold boards or on the stage in the theatre. Theatre and music have always played a big part in this local tradesman’s life and in his families. Steve and Jill have lived in Saltdean since they married and set up home here 14 years ago. Steve is a local lad being brought up in Woodingdean and attending Woodingdean Primary and then Longhill School. This is where he first encountered the taste for acting through his drama teacher, the late Peter Lloyd, whose name now adorns the refurbished drama studios at the school. Peter nurtured and encouraged him to join the Lewes Little theatre and so the path was set. Steve and Jill met when she took take part in a variety show that the Woodingdean Lions Club were putting on and of which Steve was a member, and later president. She then joined Steve and became a member of the Brighton and Hove Operatic Society performing in the sell out production of 42ⁿ Street at the Theatre Royal. Since then they have performed in many productions for the society together. The theatre company has had a long history being formed back in 1886 performing yearly, even through the toughest of times with small groups of performers playing to the troops and lightening the times of the two World Wars! They have gone through many changes and been on the brink of closure on numerous occasions, but with backing and love of the performers, directors, musicians, choreographers, supporters and friends have managed to continue on into the future. Moving forward it was decided to give the company a facelift in 2008 changing its trading name to ‘City Theatre Company’ giving it a new fresh look. Since then there have been many changes and Steve and Jill have been proud to be a part of both the committee and performing company.

They not only have a hugely talented adult company but an amazing youth section who have been privileged to perform some great shows such as Les Miserable and West Side Story, and were also chosen to take part in the West End on a joint venture with the Billy Elliot production. Steve and Jill’s eldest son Alexander is following in their footsteps having just done ‘Oliver’ at The Old Market theatre back in April with the City Theatre youth section and has also taken part in the Rottingdean pantomime with his dance school, Saltdean Academy of Dance. This local family certainly know how to keep busy with their next show Sweet Charity (straight from the West End revival) running from the 12 – 16 June, at The Old Market theatre, and then straight into rehearsals for the brilliant ’Producers’ in November. Between, during and after Steve will be busy decorating our houses and treading the boards of the scaffold once more. If you would like to tread the boards with us in one of our many shows in years to come or want to come along see our shows please visit the theatre company’s website @ Citytheatreco.co.uk
